hey everyone, i hope y'all have a great time here over the weekend...it'll be entertaining trying to figure out who is who next yr. E'01, what floor do you work on in the east building? i just started studying there yesterday, it was really nice(library was hot, its ok today)...also, in regard to housing, how much were you hoping to pay for rent etc? You might be able to find a place that's reasonable and not based on salary, many places let you have a guarantor, im spelling it wrong, (i.e. your parents will sign something that says if you flake out on the rent, they'll pay etc)...i dunno if these places would be more than what you are loking at though, but places in the 100s are reasonable compared to the rest of manhattan. it would be really difficult, however, to find something off-campus by yourself for the same price as sinai dorm housing(i.e. 500$-600$ish), you'll probably wind up paying more no matter what route you take(unless you find a roomate)... if you plan on living around/uptown from sinai, there often seem to be ads in the Voice for places in the E100s, also try Loot (i think its lootusa.com), nytimes has real estate online now too...also keep in mind living close, while nice at times, isnt always necessary,and living away has mental advantages as well(but not being in the dorm is a big part of it) many students live from 20min away to a significant distance away(i.e. other boros)etc...but i dont think many places would be as cheap as e100s. not even washington heights or inwood anymore.

Lionel you're awesome - you always give helpful advice. Thanks! I work on the 11th floor. As for housing - I haven't found anything less than $900 around this area and I certainly wouldn't take out loans to pay that much per month. So I have been thinking about those rent-controlled places but I don't think I fit the financial brackets. I've also been thinking about Astoria, Queens which is about a 25 minute subway ride away. I've been seeing apts go for $600 and up which I think is do-able and Astoria is a cool place to live. I guess I could drive from there to school but then I have to pay for parking at Sinai and I have no idea of how much that would be. First-year classes normally start at 8? Anyway, let me not get my hopes up too high - I was told by the financial aid office that my award letter is in the mail!

hey, i think i was on 13.

heh i know astoria very well. it _is_ an awesome place. however, the real estate agents there are very misleading, they post these ads for apts from 600-1000$ etc in papers but alot of times they only have the expensive ones, you really need to call alot of them and make a big effort... i know many people who live there and/or who have lived there, and i kinda doubt you could find a studio for 600$, or it would be difficult. 700-800$ maybe. but if you look hard enough i bet 600$ is doable. also depends on what pt. of astoria/how far from train etc. its a great place to live, ive spent alot of time there. if you do move there lemme know, i can tell you tons of great spots/places. it would be a pain to drive to school, triboro is right there but lots o' commuter traffic during rush hour. its easy enough(and alot cheaper) to take the N to 59th and lex and then transfer to the 6, train ride in total(not including walking etc) would be about 25min...

or, you could get in shape and bike to school, some people do that. bike right over the triboro(w/slight detour for a minute on ward island), or you can bike over queensboro...both have pedestrian paths, triboro is less maintained..
having a car in certain pts of astoria is _much_ easier than other pts. due to streetcleaning rules/frequency.

classes 1st semester started at 10(!) i beleive, some were 9 occasionally, in the spring most classes are 9. if you are thinking about queens you might want to also consider woodside, also near to city, quiet family 'hood etc right off the 7 w/easy transfer to the 4/5 at GC etc. jackson heights is really awesome too, but a very busy place...

if you are ok w/harlem though, i seem to have seen ads for thigns around 800$ for one bedrooms and such(you mentioned 900$), would think studios would be cheaper...you can get something in a more fancy(aka homogenous) pt. of UES for 1000$ pretty easily also..

Lionel thanks for your advice once more. I will check out those areas. I met another first year today who commutes from brooklyn which he says takes 1 hour. I'd prefer Queens though. Yep and the route you described from astoria to sinai is about 25 minutes - I've done it a couple of times. I don't mind Harlem, but I haven't been seeing cheap prices. So those advertised rents are too good to be true? It figures 🙁 Oh well - I'll keep looking. I guess I could always stay at home on Long Island, but my parents are very eager to see me move on out!

Yep you're right - first year classes begin at 10 then in the spring it's 9am. BUT anatomy will apparently keep you past 4pm in the fall. How was Embryology for you in the summer? Sorry, but what year are you again?

Hey Vinsanity I received a letter today - it just says that people can arrive from I think 4pm and onward. Saturday will include a brunch and meeting the deans. They will also go over financial aid with us. I'm in a funky mood - I just got my award letter from them - $34,000/year in loans!!!

hey e'01, im a 1st yr. you mustve bumped into Mark(brooklyn?) embryo was a great course, be sure to have some fun in august, things get more hectic when its over...indeed anatomy can keep you after 4 many days, especially if you goto the review sessions...staying on LI w/the folks might be bad for a variety of reasons...presuming you have free time now, i think if you spent a good couple of weeks calling realtors and looking at ads in those places i mentioned, you'll find a nice place in your range in neighborhood you want to live in...there are always cheap places, just not as many of them...

Heya Lionel - yep Mark was the dude! No, I certainly can't commute from L.I. - plus my folks are looking forward to getting rid of me. I'm hoping the least they can do is pay my food budget while I'm at school cuz they certainly aren't helping with the rest 🙁 I will start browsing through ads- I have already actually.

Does anyone know how long Sinai can hold out on us all before letting us know what their decision is? Can they really wait until like May 14th? That's what the office staff says over the phone. If so, I think that's totally unfair because we'll essentially have zero time to really think about our choice...

I would love to go to MSSM MSTP, i'm applying this year and I was just wondering what the stats were of those who have applied and if you were accepted, waitlisted, or rejected (and when). I know I can look up the average sats but I much prefer to hear people's individual cases and what you felt made you a good or bad applicant as far as MSSM goes. Well, it seems like I will end up declining MSSM MSTP offer after all. I'll think it over for the last time tonight, but there's a very good chance I'm mailing in the w/d letter tomorrow morning. Good luck to everyone who's accepted/waitlisted/waiting from MSSM.. it's a great school.

I also finally decided to withdraw from the MSSM MSTP a few days ago. I think it was a solid program but not according to my interests. Different strokes for different folks.

I'd like to add that after revisiting Sinai I am even more assure that Sinai is the place I want to be so if there are people holding acceptaces for Sinai and thinking of withdrawing please don't wait till the last second of withdrawing cause there are lots of people including myself waiting for an open spot.

guys! It was great to meet you (vinsanity and E'01). I don't think I have figured out who doppl is yet. It is funny before I went to Sinai I was leaning to Pitt, now I am leaning to Sinai. AAHH! This is getting stressful now! But I will be a Pitt next weekend so we'll see. Sinai is the bomb though! We had tons to fun!

Hey Choker - yep I will be taking Sinai. I asked one of the physicians outright (he had made the same choice between sinai and einstein and had been offered the scholarship) if he is able to pay back his loans and still live comfortably (he's a pediatrician and was one of the individuals who ran the re-visit weekend program) and he said yep. It doesn't make sense to choose a school solely based on finances - at least for me - especially since I never had a plesant experience at Einstein and could not see myself there for 4 years. Well maybe I could, but I would be happier at Sinai

hey E'01, i did my own revisit last week... i think the "official" revisit weekend is for URMs only... r u going? if you are, make sure you get someone to drive you around the area (beyond that one block)... check out Orchard beach/ City Island if you have time...
