Have you ever visited or observed the program, or entirely no contact before?

Know someone that MUSC called yesterday for July 10 interview

Have you ever visited or observed the program, or entirely no contact before?
I visited only one program from which I did not get an interview because of my visa status (I know this cos the PD reached out to me about it). For the 4 that I interviewed at, I had no prior contact whatsoever.

If you don’t mind can you tell us ur stats and experience level?
International dentist. Practicing in the US since 2013 (so 5 years experience at the time of applying). DDS from a P/NP school (no GPA other than the one from the dental school abroad). Average ADAT score. No prominent research/publications. I did have some interesting presentations in my home country. I was told by my interviewers that I had really, really good letters of recommendation and I felt like I had a pretty good personal statement. Not a permanent resident/citizen (on a visa).

Does anyone here about San Antonio

Only that they would be in contact “after June 16, 2023”. I’m taking that to mean they will send out invites next week. Monday being a holiday, figure Tues earliest.

Do these programs send out all interview emails on one day? I felt my application is pretty strong but I have not heard anything back from 2 programs that already send out their interview emails this week. That’s depressing.

Also for UConn, the program coordinator specially emailed me that we won’t hear anything back until the June23 (the program deadline) for online interviews that will be held in July. But now someone got interview invite this week. That’s weird~~~

It's a little frustrating that there are many misleading variables in the application process. When schools say they will respond after 6/23, but secretly send out invites before, and then create arbitrary deadlines that don't mean anything, it's discouraging. This is my 2nd time applying and haven't heard anything. I don't want to give up, but I wish there was a realistic path to take to pursue this specialty.

Have you gone to AAE?

I am in the same boat. 2nd time applying as well. Feel that I have somewhat competitive application, but I suppose we all feel that way.

It’s a very competitive specialty. Since it’s non-match we don’t know the numbers exactly like other specialties, but it’s on par with os and ortho. 200-300 applicants for every program and they just accept a few people. Don't let this discourage you but that's the reality

2020-2021 cycle there were 5737 applicants and there were around ~210 spots.

When I applied I was invited to interview early before the actual interview date. Just because the chair liked me on paper. He had never met me, nor did I have any connections. You are dealing with 1 or 2 people in charge who are looking to fill a class if 2-4 people. It’s an EXTREMELY selective and competitive process. They can choose you or not for whatever reason they want. It’s also a competitive speciality even in the real world. Everyone wants to be the best. So chairs and directors want the best to reflect on their program. Plenty of good applicants get passed up on every year.

Thanks for sharing this story. Curious to know if you ended up getting into that program?
I did. And I said yes because even though I had plenty of other interviews lined up at reputable programs, a bird in the hand is worth 2 in the bush. It’s just a crappy process. They need to go to match.

Yes they do. I feel my stats are good: 3.8, top 10%, 90+% boards, OKU, plenty of awards, lots of missionary work out of country, plenty private practice experience. Excellent LOR; No interviews. But it sounds like we all have those or better. Bottom line, extremely competitive to the point that the decisions can only fill 2-5 slots from a large group of highly intelligent and more than capable candidates. At some point, the decision has to go beyond stats, we all have them and some of y’all are crazy amazing I’m sure. What that decision comes down to per program is unknown to me. Maybe one program wants a particular type of person, maybe they like your military experience, maybe another program likes your Ph.D., maybe another likes that you are an author. Seriously who knows, but the PDs themselves.
Again, I’m sure and would bet money that you ALL are seriously qualified, there are just only so many slots. Sucks, bad yes. Just keep trying and find your way. Good luck to you all and in your future practice.

It is a very fast and brutal application process and even the strongest applicants need a bit of luck to get in. There is no perfect candidate for all programs, every program has things they look for (experienced vs moldable new grads, same institution vs outside institutions, military or not, etc). You’ll never find these nuances on a program website, you have to know the residents or faculty or go to the interview day. You’ll learn so much in the first hour of interview day.

Each program is getting about 50 applications per SEAT, and then interviewing at least 4 per seat. It’s very draining going to an interview day where they are interviewing about 8 people per seat and trying to stand out.

In our interview pools, we filtered out lots of average applicants that didn’t have enough experience or had grades too low, and still had maybe 10 good candidates per seat. Some of those showed up to the interview, some didn’t. By interview day, you’re picking based on personality, likability, and balancing that with the other residents, not grades. By that point it’s more like dating.

Anecdotally, about half the people I interviewed with when I applied, or interviewed at our program, got in somewhere. The other half are still GPs.

Endo is competitive like ortho and OS now and getting harder, and there are many more ortho and OS programs. The good thing is, even if you don’t get in you can still do lots of root canals and make a good living.

In my experience, PDs tend to know more or less who they want before interview day and want to ensure that person fits well with the program, staff, faculty, and residents. It isn't all grades and stats. Sometimes it seems so random.

Storytime: A few years before me, a resident got an interview because he admitted to having a felony/misdemeanor on his record (it was some stupid hunting thing like accidentally trespassing). Well my old PD LOVES hunting, they clicked, and he was accepted on the spot. Last year we had another dropout and the same PD (he's retired now so don't ask my school) told me to look at 2 applications. I just picked one, they were called in for an interview. With this PD that basically meant you would get an offer.

I remember being so nervous about interviews. When I interviewed at my current program, he kicked up his feet on the desk, threw in some Copenhagen, farted loudly, and then proceeded to talk to me for 30 mins. None of which was about endo. It was nice. My program is not the sexiest by any means, but I clicked and loved my time there.

Most residents that I know are not top 10% gpa. It is definitely more about personality and work ethic imo.

Does anyone have experience uploading ADAT scores to an ADEA PASS application that has already been submitted? Or how long this can take?

Hahha that's awesome. What program did you go to?

It's so incredibly pointless to determine personality and work ethic from one personal statement (which I know for a fact that many applicants are getting professionally written/edited). All applicants have incredible profiles and phenomenal letters of rec. I have come to realize that it is futile to even speculate why, when 2 people have almost identical profiles, one will get a dozen interviews and one won't get even a single one!
I knew of one PD that read every personal statement, ranked applicants on basis of a rubric, and would call recommenders to verify letters of rec after shortlisting candidates before sending invites for interviews. At least that gives it SOME form of merit. I don't think programs are taking that kind of effort any more.
That being said, I feel a military background is a HUGE plus on the profile!
I agree 100% that PDs know who they want even before the interview. At that point, the interview is just to make sure the person they like is "sane".

Does anyone have experience uploading ADAT scores to an ADEA PASS application that has already been submitted? Or how long this can take?
I had to call them to have them uploaded, but it was before submission, I’m not sure if they would allow you to add the score after you submitted the application. But try to send it directly to the schools you applied to if is not possible to submit it to PASS

First of all, I am not a part of any residency committee, and it's my personal opinion regarding preceptorships.

I am reading the UCLA preceptorship program and Loma Linda extern/internship program, and it seems like the UCLA one allows "clinical training with direct patient contact under faculty supervision" where as Loma Linda one "do not treat patients."

I am sure both programs provide good education since you're attending the same didactic classes as endo residents do. I guess if you do really well during your preceptorship, the PD of that program would be impressed - which SHOULD help with your future application at that program.
I agree with " if you do really well during your preceptorship...."

That worked for me, I am an international trained dentist, and I did a preceptorship last year, I applied last year to residency programs and I am starting next week orientation for my endo residency, so for me IT WORKED!

What were considered grades too low?

What were considered grades too low?
Either bottom 25% or bottom 50% (I forget which) basically wouldn’t get read. Program director would go through all the apps initially and tally up points for different criteria (grades, experience, this or that achievement, etc) and make a cutoff score. Then they would go through the better apps in more detail.

There’s just too many qualified applicants to read all 100-200 apps cover to cover in addition to their normal director duties and they can afford to be selective. It’s going to be different at different programs. 50% class rank might be auto-filtered out at one program and another one might overlook that if you have strong experience, military, letters of rec, etc. If you were an average or below average dental student, it’s hard to get in even with experience unless there’s something else exceptional (family connections, significant research, amazing hand skills, ridiculously good looking?, etc)

Like the other poster said most residents I know aren’t top 10%, but some are, and most I know are top third (or unranked fancy school). I’d estimate average candidate who gets in is probably top 30% and 4 years of experience.

Are tufts and BU going to send more interview invites or will they fill their spots with whoever already got invited to interview?

Has anyone heard from UTSA on invites? I know they said after the 16th, but their interview date is in two weeks. If you got an invite from them please post. Thanks

I assume people have started turning down interviews. I just received an invite from Houston. I updated the thread to reflect UMKC invite but I didn't add anything to Houston since the invites have already been sent out. Good luck to everyone!

Nice! Was it email or phone call for Houston?

What was the method of invite for UMKC?

To those who were invited for interviews at BU, have you heard back from them after you gave the date preferences for interviews?

Yes, immediately after. But it may have been because I had replied to them immediately. They provided me a confirmed date.
