*****Official PASS 2025 Endodontic Residency Interviews/Information***

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Sorry, what happened this cycle that leads you to conclude that? Lots of D4s getting accepted this year?
Yes. And 1-year GPRs. And LOTS of experienced (3-9years) dentists getting stiffed. Of course, there's programs that specifically ONLY interview people with that kind of experience but far too many didn't.

There are definitely schools that prefer younger residents. Me, personally, I was wary of those because they're either big research schools (I'm not a research person nor interested in academia) or they didn't have enough patients so a new grad taking 4-8 hours per tooth matched their patient flow.

I applied to many programs and I had couple interviews this year. during my interviews: PD asked me if I use microscope and if I did apical surgery!! one of the interviewer told me I do not want high grades! I am looking for passionate applicant!.
one of the program picked their applicant with more than 20 years of experience (doing high end procedures).
but most of the programs picked their residents with one year practice experience and high grade! I heard the PDs care about residents passing the board exam, cares about school reputation. it is not hard to find couple good cases out of 150 cases for the board exam presentation!
looks like experience does not matter like before in previous endo applications.
BUT how you are going to like endo with only doing 10-20 root canals !! I really want to do endo after many root canals procedures, perforations and broken instruments !!
Which program just wants passion and not so much grades? Asking for… a friend.

It would be nice to have statistics on it to see how much of a trend it really is.

I would wager there are many more experienced dentists with 3-9 years experience applying the past few cycles and they just don’t stand out as much. Good experience with mediocre grades just won’t cut it, the applicant pool is too strong.

Also more gunners coming out of school going for endo that previously would go for ortho, OS, etc perhaps now that endo average income is trending upward?

Endo is seeing alot of OMFS type of applicants (top 1/3 in class, research, leadership, 1 year gpr/aegd) that dont want to do 4-6 years of omfs residency. Even highly clinical programs are accepting more of these candidates. The more experienced candidates alot of times have a military background or public health, not private practice. This has been my observation being a first endo resident

Is public health experience better than private practice? I don’t think it matters!

Anyone applied to case western university? When they will start sending invites?

In last year's cycle, they sent interview invites in November, so I wouldn't expect any earlier than late October.

Anybody hear anything from Penn? Interviews were completed a couple of weeks ago.

It helps weed out the people doing it just for the money
& I think it just a better reflection of the population type you would be seeing at the majority if not all the endo residency programs.

I noticed that. and acceptance in jan or feb per some replies on SDN BUT not 100% sure if that is correct!
will 4 months be enough time to move and give notice to the current job !!! just curious why CWRU is doing that.

Lol if I didnt get in all cycle and got a last minute acceptance even 1 day before the residency started id buy a one way plane ticket and go. 4 months is no problem

That’s my attitude towards it too, not much else is worth spending a whole other year waiting to apply to residency again, time is money

because they do at least two rounds of interviews - one in november and then one in december. and then they take about a month to make their decision lol

Hey, I was not accepted this year for endo, so I decided to apply for GPR/AEGD this cycle. Do I need new letters of recs?

I would recommend checking with programs individually to explain your situation. You can offer to have your recommenders send them updated letters directly since I don't think PASS will let you change letters.

Got waitlisted at NYU a month ago :cryi:. How low are the chances of getting in at this point? I can't imagine anyone dropping out. I have colleagues urging me to keep calling and bugging the program but I don't see how that would help my chances either.

They accept quite a few so your chances are slim but not 0. I definitely wouldnt bug them. Thats a great way to not get an invite next year. Just followup with the intent that you would love a chance to interview again next yr

How important is a good ADAT score if your GPA is around 3.0. I applied to 19 schools this year with that GPA and 7 years of exp and go no interviews. Thinking about taking the ADaT.

As far as I know and felt: Some of the schools take a look at ADAT. Most of schools they don’t care. You might need to check with the school program coordinator if possible. At least their websites.

This was my first cycle applying, getting no interviews. I graduated in 2015, class rank of 25 out of 86. My question is whether retaking the ADAT would improve my chances. My scores were overall 560 (82nd percentile), biomed section 490 (47th percentile), clinical science 650 (98th percentile), data research etc section 510 (63rd percentile). I mostly took it to show that I could still study effectively, having been out of school so long, but didn't do so well on the biomed section. Thoughts? Should I concentrate on other things, like research?

Studying is barely part of residency. Pathology and pharmacology are the only classes you need to actually study for and it pales in comparison to actual dental school. Like you may study for a couple weeks total if you combine all the courses. You read a ton, but anyone can do that. I would say it’s more a reflection of your overall app. Like experiences, recs, personality, etc. Your numbers sound fine. Could be higher but not a deterrent. What have you done besides practice for 10 years that shows you are committed to endo?

How many programs did you apply to? I'm surprised you didn't get any interviews

Your ADAT is good enough. Most schools don't even care for it. I agree with AAdentist - GPA is a big one.
Regardless, don't let one unsuccessful cycle dishearten you. I've said this before - it's a crap process. I know someone who applied to 22 schools in their second cycle, got ONE interview and got in. It just takes one.
I'm sorry you have to go through this again. Hopefully it will be the last time you ever have to do it. Good luck!

My GPA as 3.41. The past two years I have been a member of the aae. I went to fall 2023 Insights meeting, and the annual meeting this spring. I did a table presentation at the aae meeting.
I do wonder that that means, or maybe what they are looking for…to show “you are committed to endo.” What more could be done? Volunteering on a mission trip exclusively doing root canals?

You scored higher than me, I wouldn't retake it.
I think you need to get connected with some academic endodontists. Are you near a program? Do you know any endodontists that teach at a program?

No, sounds like you are doing everything you need to be doing. You’ve basing practicing for a while. Doing more root canals is not what they’re interested in. It’s honestly just really hard right now. So many experience GP’s and qualified dental students are trying to specialize. It’s little things that can separate you. Like Redchesus said, have you met any directors or visited any programs? I’d try to get my name out there. Get someone to vouch for you. You’d be surprised how many programs will pass up good candidates on paper for a name that someone (current/ or old residents) just vouch for.

Too many strong applicants. Too little time to truly evaluate everyone. If youre not in the top 10 of your class itll boil down to who you know, who wrote your letters of rec, whats the PDs experience accepting a similar personality in the past. Some want military folk. Some programs shy away from females (maternity leave). Its just the way it is now with 300 applicants applying for 3-4 spots

is there any chance the waitlist will move this late into the cycle?

Side question, is there a cheap malpractice plan for endo residents moonlighting? Mine wants a pretty heft amount and it seems cheaper to buy a tail and get something that supports residents.. possibly Medpro?

Anything is possible in my opinion!! people might drop off last minute, visa issues and accepted at another programs (still waiting on case), and maybe Canadian applicants.
