Thanks! How long until schools usually receive the application? Also, I believe the TAMU secondary website has not been updated as I cannot select a 2021 application. Has anyone else had this issue?
Remember TMDSAS is just starting transmission to schools this week then the school admissions staff needs to upload your app to their system.
Go to the A&M school-specific page on SDN for 2020-2021, I have posted up the secondary prompt there.
It’s the only one I have so far, will share the others as I get them on the specific pages.

How do you know if TMDSAS successfully received your MCAT score? On aamc's "scores sent to institutions," it says sent to TMDSAS on 5/18, so its been over 36 hours

Can we use the optional essay for secondaries? My essay for the optional topic fits perfectly with one of the A&M secondary questions.

You shouldn't copy it & paste it, because remember Texas A&M admissions people have already read that optional essay in your primary TMDSAS application. If you want to further discuss the same topic or bring out different aspects of it, you could do that.

Secondary essays serve two purposes:
1. Allows the school to hear things from you related to their particular mission
2. Allows you to say something about yourself that you haven't said so far

If TMDSAS is asking for transcripts all the way in August, wouldn't this be pretty late for verification? In since it may take some time to actually send the transcript once it has been requested, would it be ok to send in the transcripts right now since they'll just have it on file?

They verify your app without the transcript. They give you 30 days to get it to them when they email to ask you for it. Trust the process ! 🙂

A common misconception is that processing and verification are the same thing.

Processing = required for interviews - check to see if your courses are classified correctly (BCPM, non-sci, etc)

Verification = not required for interviews - check to see if your entered grades match your transcript. Not a good look if your entered grades don't correspond with your transcript

What exactly do they even verify, since they don't have the transcripts?
Has your application been filled out completely?
Are you to be considered as a Texas resident or out-of-state? They closely evaluate your evidence of residency and make a judgment.
Have you classified your courses correctly into categories? If not, they fix that for you.
They calculate your GPA in many different ways for presentation to the med schools. (overall GPA, BCPM GPA, Science GPA, non-science GPA)

They trust you to be truthful on your grades. You can be trusted, can't you? I sure hope so!
Later in the summer when most of the processing of primaries is over, they can take on the labor-intensive task of comparing your app to your transcripts, line by line.

Hello! I have some questions re: prereqs.
I have realized that I graduated one "qualified" English class short for all schools except Dell. Can you clarify if this is an "at matriculation" deadline meaning I could take it at a community college this coming Fall? If I can, how do I go about indicating this on my app? I don't know which CC it would be at yet or which class since I am just realizing this now and also unsure where I will be living at that time. Do I even need to include it in my app? Or is it something I could send in later or prove prior to matriculation?

Sorry I'm sure this info is hidden somewhere but I can't quite figure it out!

You just need to complete it before matriculation. The school that accepts you will be the one to check all your completed courses against their pre-requisites.
The easiest way to let the schools know is to send your new transcript to TMDSAS after you have finished new courses. TMDSAS likes to get a transcript update after Fall term if you are still a student.

Thanks for getting back to me! So no need to place it as a projected course at this time? Or should I do my best to put a placeholder? For me it's complicated by the issue of not knowing which school I would take it at.

Quick question...when I view my PCR link on my submitted application, it's missing one of my physics labs. I checked my application on file and the physics lab is definitely on the app. So on PCR- Physics shows 7 credits instead of 8.

If you find a discrepancy on the PCR, contact TMDSAS right away to have them check it.
Everyone, you have 7 days to do this.

Uggg, figured out I must have fat fingered "other science" instead of "phys lab"
Went over this 1000 times and missed the mistake 🙁

Hello. I added my scribing position to employment section. After looking at the manual again, I realized for TMDSAS, you can add scribing to healthcare activities as well. I already submitted my primary application last week. Though I understand it's a long shot, should I contact TMDSAS regarding this!? I am sure they have more urgent matters to attend to. I have other healthcare activities, but scribing for a few years accumulated a good number of hours. Thank you for your time.

I don’t think this is worth worrying over. You “may “ put an activity in both employment and healthcare but you don’t “have to”, especially when you have other entries in the healthcare activities category. Good luck this year!

Thank you for the prompt response and providing me reassurance. I appreciate it! Have a great day

I don’t see the Sam Houston State College of Medicine in the list of schools on the TMDSAS application. Does anyone know why?

A lot of my volunteer experiences include teaching. How should I decide what to separate and count as leadership experience? I'm trying to decide about ESL tutoring, TAing, and teaching piano lessons. Thanks

Is there a thread for verification/processing of TMDSAS applications? I have been looking for it, but nothing recent comes up.

This year TMDSAS is posting a running update of what they're working on, it will say something like "TMDSAS is currently processing applications submitted on May 26"

to see it, go to TMDSAS Home page and click the "Apply Now" >>>then "Access Your Application"

Does applying to a "throwaway school" work for TMDAS for those who have not yet taken the MCAT? I'm scheduled to test in June, but I decided to only apply to one school to get verified early and add more schools when my score comes out. Does TMDAS work the same as AMCAS or would it be better to just add more schools before I get verified?

You could do that if you prefer, but I don't see this strategy used as much in TX. Probably because the fee is the same to apply to one or all schools.

Another thing to note is that even though TMDSAS will transmit your app to schools while you're waiting on an MCAT score, the school might see your app as incomplete and hold off on fully evaluating you.

Hey! I'm new to sdn, but I was wondering if my July 23rd MCAT will hold me back. I have already submitted my application without it, but I am wondering if I will even receive secondaries without an MCAT score? Would having secondaries ready to be submitted as soon as I receive them in August help?

Thank you!

I don’t think there’s one answer for all TX schools. I know you can create a Texas A&M account and get their secondary as soon as you submit. You will get an email from UTSW as soon as they upload your app. Others may do some screening before sending one to you or may wait until they see your score. Just check your email and spam folder daily and work on them one by one.
You will definitely not get any interview invites later on until your app is complete including scores, secondaries, and letters.

How long after transmission does UH and Dell typically send secondaries? My app was transmitted last Tuesday and I still haven heard back from either. I know they screen, but was just wondering if I havent heard back by now I didn't make it through the screen.

It will be on the order of weeks not days if they screen by reading your whole app.

How's it going, Texas applicants?

Keep on working steadily on your TMDSAS primary application.

PROOFREAD that dang thing many times because there is very little you can change after you hit submit.
See the checklist on page 12 of the application manual.

Remember you have 3 essays available to you; you can spread your experiences and insights among them.
1. Personal Statement (why medicine?)
2. Personal Characteristics (why me?)
3. Optional essay - your chance to mention something interesting about you that wasn't asked or covered on other parts of the app.

ENTER your classes exactly as they appear on your transcript or transcripts. You did get a copy of your official transcript for your own use so you can get it exactly right, right? Do it now if you didn't.

NO fancy formatting on your essays. No indenting for paragraphs. Use "Line Break" on your computer to go to a new line for your next paragraph (it only uses one character).

PRINT/PREVIEW your entire app before submitting. You can sometimes catch errors there you wouldn't catch on the screen. Don't freak out if your activity descriptions look cut-off. The schools will see the whole thing when they open up your application to read it.

Try to submit it when you are happy with it. TMDSAS will message you when they have verified it to give you one last chance to check your PCR. You will have one week to get back to them to address any discrepancies. What is the PCR? Categorization of your pre-reqs into proper categories:

Prescribed Coursework Review (PCR):
Process by which TMDSAS reviews the coursework as coded by the applicant and compares with the approved Course Listing for each institution. TMDSAS may make changes to the course coding entered by the applicant during processing to ensure courses are coded in accordance with the approved Course Listing.

A PDF of the PCR is available for applicants to review upon application transmission. Note: the PCR lists only the courses coded as prerequisites. All other courses can be viewed in the [College Coursework] section of the application. (See Policy Appealing Course Coding Decisions Made in Processing for more information.)

Now what?
Check your email and spam folder daily. Don't bug the schools to ask "are you going to send me a secondary?"
It's a long cycle, y'all, get used to being patient.

Work on secondary application essays with care, as they come to you from schools. Some schools send them to you right away and others will wait until they have read your complete app (complete meaning with MCAT and letters).

Go do that CASPer test. Most TX schools want it this year. Results are sent to schools from CASPer, not through TMDSAS.

That's all I got for now, keep on working.

P.S. Find and "watch" all the school-specific 2020-2021 pages for the Texas schools on SDN.
You can see what the secondaries are when people post them up and share them.
So far at this point, you can see the prompts from UTSW, Texas A&M, McGovern, Texas Tech El Paso and Texas Tech Lubbock.

(Notice that the Lubbock prompt contains some checkboxes and short answers, so you'll have to wait to get a link from Lubbock to actually do this one.)
Seeing the prompts you can start writing while you have time, then submit them when a school invites you.

I have a question about the extra letter for the TMDSAS application (I have a committee letter). Is it recommended to send the extra letter through Interfolio directly to TMDSAS or should I wait until my app has been transmitted and send to individual schools? My letter is from a DO, so I was thinking of only sending it to TCOM and SHSU-COM. My app was submitted May 23rd and it's in processing right now.

Your letter can go to both MD and DO schools, so easiest to send it to TMDSAS now so your application can be seen as complete by everyone.

I have a question about the UTSW secondary (I posted it in the main forum but realized this is the more appropriate thread). I have taught the past 2 years in a Title 1 inner-city school (99.7% qualify for free lunch) and am continuing to teach in this school this coming year. My students have won awards for the school for their achievements/ test scores and I have 350+ additional hours of service with my students and their parents as a volunteer coach, tutor, and ESL adult language teacher. I don't know how much adcoms may or may not know about the school system but should I mention that it is a TFA school (there are TFA teachers at the school because it is considered a "failing" campus). I didn't go through the TFA program (I did a different one), but does this still count as the same kind of "public service"? Is it ok if I frame this experience from more of a service standpoint instead of an employment one? What do you think @wysdoc ?

I'm mainly asking in the context of the following prompt, but also in general. Would my experience merit a response to this essay:
  • Have you engaged in any public service activities for a duration of one year or greater in length (examples: Military, Peace Corps, Teach for America, etc.). Yes or No? If so, please describe the experience and impact on your personal and professional development. (Optional) (2,500 characters)
I think it fits the teach for America type service. However, there is nothing wrong with putting it in the employment category and then explaining more in the “most significant activity” space.
Another option would be to categorize your day teaching as employment and the extra things you do with the kids and the parents after hours as your community service.

Is the TMDSAS system like AAMC where I can submit to one school for verification purposes then submit to the rest once I receive my mcat score? I’m taking my test the 20th but I want to know my score without sending it to schools blindly

Yes you can do that, but to add more schools you will need to message TMDSAS via your portal and tell them which schools to add. It can't be added on your own like AMCAS.

Already submitted your application and wondering when it will be transmitted to your schools?

Instead of using Twitter this year to update you on their general progress, TMDSAS this year is using their web page to announce what day of submitted apps they are processing.

Don't call them and ask if it's ready yet 😉😵😉😵, check for yourself on the Apply page here:

Very soon after transmittal, you will start getting emails from schools with a link to their secondary essay questions. CHECK YOUR SPAM FOLDERS TOO!

Hot Tips:
1. You can't send a school a secondary before you submit your primary. BUT if you watch the school-specific pages to see what the prompts are, you can start working on your essays.
2. I will share secondary essay prompts on the individual school pages as soon as I get a reliable report on each 2021 prompt.
3. "Watch" all the SDN pages of your schools!

For Texas A&M you don't need to wait for an invitation. Go to their web page, create an A&M account, & get the essay.

For UTSW you don't need to wait for an invitation either, BUT you do need to wait until your app has been transmitted to them. Check your email and spam folders a few days after you hear from TMDSAS that your app has been transmitted.

All other schools: Wait for them to email you.

is there even benefit for that loophole verification trick?? I know for AMCAS, the purpose is so that if you get a bad MCAT score, you will only be a re-applicant towards that school only. However, isn't TMDSAS considering all failed applicants , re-applicants? So why not just submit to all schools?

I usually recommend that Texans submit to all schools, yes. Especially since TX schools really like earlier app submission.
For AMCAS schools the cycle is shifted a bit later, by 4-6 weeks

Hi I was trying to find something on this but I have not seen anyone bring this up. So all of my letters of evaluation have been submitted before I have submitted my primary application. I have decided to not send my primary app until I receive my MCAT score but the letters should have my TMDSAS ID as I requested the letter writers to include it. My question is what happens to the letters until then? Will they be processed before my application or will they wait until my primary application is in to process both?

@poblanopepper If you have completed your primary TMDSAS app up to the point where you list the names and contact info of your recommenders, TMDSAS portal sees that info and has already sent an email to your recommenders to upload. So yes it's all secure and is matched up with your application ID already.

Your application is in the system, but will not be verified until you hit "Submit." It will not be sent to the schools until verified.
When is your MCAT score due in?

@wysdoc Oh that's good news thank you! It had been a couple of weeks since my writers had informed me they uploaded their letters. I was not sure if they would approve/verify them without my primary submitted but the first letter was actually approved this morning! I should have waited a day to ask on here lol.

As of right now I am registered for June 27th so I will receive my scores on July 14th but I will decide by tomorrow if to postpone until July 7th and receive my scores July 21st since it is only a week difference in score release I don't think it should be too much of a difference considering I will not be early regardless. I have a high GPA and I am URM but my practice scores have been pretty low so I'm kind of nervous about that. Thank you for your response!

Hi so I realized my school submits a committee letter so I will probably need to submit that. The issue is I have already got 4 letters submitted to tmdsas, how can I get rid of one of those and submit my committee letter instead?

also, does anybody know the requirements for letters? like A&M has on their website that they prefer professor letters (at least that's how I was interpreting it) and only want letters from research mentors/ advisors if I can't get professor letters. I couldn't find any clear guidance for the other schools.

The only way to find this out is to look at each school's web page, or the MSAR if you are subscribed to that.
Yes, attention to detail will be part of your job from now on!
You will need to check your emails as well as your med school portals regularly for the next year.
(emails daily and school portals 1-2 times a week).

Refer to pages 44 to 46 in the TMDSAS handbook. If this still doesn't answer your question, message TMDSAS within the portal.
If you have not already hit submit on your app, the TMDSAS staff might be able to help you substitute your committee letter for one of the others.
If you already submitted, you can't retract a letter!
