Duties will include: clinic coverage, on call coverage, ER, OR and inpatient management of OMFS patients. Interns will also attend all didactic departmental conferences.

Our interns are an integral part of the OMFS team. The majority of our past interns were successful in matching with programs immediately following completion of the internship.

Successful candidates will be bright, self-motivated and eager to become part of a dynamic OMFS team. Additionally, they must have completed at least a PGY-1 GPR or AEGD before the start of the program. The OMFS internships are fully funded positions. Salaries start at the PGY-2 level.

OMFS Internship at UMKC

UMKC School of Dentistry in Kansas City, Missouri is looking to fill one non-categorial internship position, starting on October 1, 2022. Non-categorical interns have the same responsibilities and function as categorical interns. Duties will include:
  • Work in the dental school oral surgery clinic (dentoalveolar clinic)
  • In-house call (5-7/month on average) at Truman Medical Center and Children's Mercy Hospital
  • Handle scheduling for OR
  • Manage inpatients at Truman Medical Center and Children's Mercy Hospital
  • Weekly didactics and monthly journal club
The program has a lot of dentoalveolar and trauma. ENT and plastics don’t cover facial trauma calls here. In addition, the residents and attendings are helpful and friendly. Most importantly, the resident lounge offers free and unlimited coffee, soda, and snacks.

Personal experience: I was a non-categorical intern at the dental school. After one year of internship at UMKC, I felt comfortable doing complex facial lacerations, beside I&D of dental infection, MMF (maxillomandibular fixation) placement, excisional/incisional biopsy, impacted third molar extractions, and socket augmentation independently as well as reading CT head/face. Doing an internship at UMKC definitively boosted my resume. I received over 10 interviews and was matched to a fairly competitive program. Highly recommend doing an internship at UMKC.

Please send your CV, LOR, dental school transcript, and CBSE score if you ready took it to [email protected]. Feel free to DM me for any questions.

For further information and responsibilities, please see below:

Non-categorical intern responsibilities are identical to the responsibilities of the categorical interns aside from any responsibilities to the medical school. Non-categorical and categorical interns are treated exactly the same:

· Coverage of our two main clinics at UB School of Dental Medicine and the Erie County Medical Center, as well as our Craniofacial clinic at Oishei Children’s Hospital

· Rounding on inpatients and managing their care

· Taking primary call

We currently operate at Erie County Medical Center, Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center, and Oishei Children’s Hospital and there will almost always be an intern involved in each case.

Call:

Call is taken primarily at Erie County Medical Center which is the only level I trauma center in Western New York. Interns will split primary call each month which translates to q4-5 day call with a senior resident as backup. OMFS covers odontogenic/deep neck space infection call 24/7/365 with the GPR residents covering dental trauma and minor infections. Facial trauma call is split evenly with our ENT colleagues. We take facial trauma call every other day.

Didactics:

Didactics are an important part of the program. Conferences are usually held in the morning prior to any clinical responsibilities and include weekly case conferences, weekly literature reviews, monthly OMFS-Orthodontics multidisciplinary conferences, and weekly Grand Round conferences. All residents are required to create presentations for these conferences and present throughout the year.

Please contact our program coordinator Haley Groves at [email protected] to apply/interview for the position.

The following documentation is required for consideration:

OMFS (Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery) internships offer hands-on experience and training in the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery. These internships provide opportunities for dental students, medical students, and residents to gain a comprehensive understanding of OMFS and its practices.

OMFS internships typically include:

Clinical observation and assisting in surgical procedures
Exposure to various OMFS subspecialties such as dental implants, orthognathic surgery, facial trauma, and jaw reconstruction
Didactic sessions and lectures with OMFS specialists
Participation in research projects and case presentations
OMFS internships are available at various institutions, including academic medical centers, private practices, and government facilities. Some internships are paid, while others are unpaid. Some may require a minimum commitment, such as a one-month or one-year program.

OMFS internships are competitive and selective, and applicants are usually required to have a strong academic record and good interpersonal skills. Some programs may also require applicants to have prior experience in the dental field and a basic understanding of OMFS procedures.

OMFS internships provide valuable experience for those interested in pursuing a career in OMFS and can help to build a competitive resume and network within the field.
Is this a position posting? If so where can one apply?

The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Temple University Kornberg School of Dentistry currently has one non-categorical internship position open for the 2023-2024 academic year.

All applicants must have an active PA dental license.
Non-categorical interns have the same responsibilities as categorical interns in the program.

Responsibilities:
I. Covering the graduate oral surgery clinic, with exposure to complex dentoalveolar procedures, benign pathology, implant placement, bone and soft tissue augmentation, and managing medically complex patients.
II. Covering the outpatient sedation center, completing more complicated procedures under moderate/deep intravenous sedation, and assisting with the sedation itself.
III. Taking dental and facial trauma call at Temple University Hospital in North Philadelphia (Level I Trauma Center). The call is busy, but is split with Plastics, ENT, and a separate 4 Year OMS program, so is not as frequent.
IV. Managing inpatient care and prerounding/rounding
V. Participation in all didactic activities, including weekly case presentations/case review/lectures, grand rounds, and scholarly activity
VI. Second and First-Assisting on OR cases at the hospital. Given the nature of the program with one resident per year and incomplete coverage at times; there will be opportunities for the interns to first-assist with the attending on larger cases, offering a unique experience that is not as common for an intern.

Salary/Benefits: Non-categorical interns are paid through the Dental School. Terms to be discussed.

Please contact Dr. Pooja Gangwani at [email protected] if you are interested or have any questions.

The Augusta University Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Program has a 1 year non-categorical internship spot open for the 2023-2024 academic year.

We are a full scope oral and maxillofacial surgery program located in Augusta, Georgia and cover the level 1 trauma center at Augusta University Medical Center and the level 2 pediatric trauma center at the Children’s Hospital of Georgia attached to AUMC.

There is an emphasis on mentorship and preparing non-categorical interns for the next match and beyond. We have had historically high match rates amongst our interns.

Facilities and responsibilities for interns/residents:
  • Dental College of Georgia: This is a busy out-patient clinic serving patients from both the dental school and the Veterans Association. You will be able to perform dentoalveolar procedures and see consults and followups in all aspects of oral and maxillofacial surgery including but not limited to extractions/implants, orthognathics, benign and malignant pathology, and temporomandibular joint disorders. Interns have been able to place implants in past years.
  • AUMC: Interns along with categorical residents are responsible for rounding and managing inpatients throughout the week. Call will be split approximately q5-7 at AUMC with 2 weeks out of each month being in-house trauma call. OMFS covers infection call daily, but there are no dental extractions in the ED. The pediatric ED is attached to the adult ED. OMFS has its own dedicated call room and shower requiring access key to enter along with a lounge on the same floor with free food/drink/coffee.
  • ASMP: You will be rotating a few days each month at the Augusta State Medical Prison where you will have a robust experience in extractions of teeth (including plenty of 3rds) under local anesthesia and seeing trauma exams and followups.

  • Journal clubs are held once a month.
  • Implant conference take place each Monday afternoon.
  • OMFS has multidisciplinary conferences with the orthodontics department and pathology lectures as well.
  • Interns can take part in research of their choosing during the year and are encouraged to do so both to strengthen their application and to gain knowledge on research and the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery.
Pay is approximately $50,000 for the year with plenty of places to live that are reasonably priced and close to the medical center.

Documents required:
  • CV
  • CBSE
  • NBDE Scores
