Non-categorical internships posted here are one-year long programs that you begin after finishing dental school. Many choose this route if they do not match, or want to build experience in OS.

Thank you!

Happy new years everyone!

I'm writing on behalf of MetroHealth Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department regarding two non-categorical internship spots for the 2019-2020 academic year. This program is in affiliation with Case Western OMS program, and the Case residents rotate at this site during the year. I am one of the rising chief residents and will be working personally with the interns on a day to day basis. Having completed this internship myself 4 years ago, I can speak to the quality of this opportunity.

Expectations:
- Roughly q3 call, shared with co-intern and Case residents. Metro is a level 1 trauma center, and we cover every third week of face call. Besides trauma, we cover infections in coordination with the dental residency. While trauma call can be busy, the overall call work load is reasonable and an excellent experience at this level. Interns will be backed up directly by Case residents during the year.

-We run a primarily dentoalveolar clinic 5 days a week in which interns can expect a considerable hands on experience in basic surgery as well as wisdom teeth. Three days per week we also have sedations run by the Case residents.

-1-2 days per week we have outpatient surgery center block time for dentoalveolar and smaller scale maxillofacial surgeries. The interns are often directly involved in these cases as the Case residents cover the main campus operating room schedule.

-Our inpatient service is typically light, and interns can expect to learn patient management without being overwhelmed by patient volume.

-Opportunity for didactics within our department as well as conferences with the Case program. We also understand that many applicants are working on the CBSE and our goal as a department is to place our interns in an excellent position to match into an official program after their year at Metro.

Interns will work directly with staff Dr's. Martinez, Troconis, and Clemow, as well as the Case residents. This will be the fifth year for the attendings working with interns and now the third year with Case residents rotating on the service as well.

Interested applicants should e-mail department chair Dr. Martinez at [email protected]. Interviews will likely be conducted over the phone/Skype. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Dr. Martinez or myself (Paul Shivers [email protected]). I personally have had a great experience training with our interns over the past two years and look forward to the next group of 2019-2020!

I am writing on behalf of the UMKC School of Dentistry which offers two non-categorical internship positions within the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery beginning July 2019.

Department of Oral Surgery and Hospital Dentistry
Job Description

The University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Dentistry is seeking to fill two (2) Fellow positions in the Department of Oral Surgery and Hospital Dentistry. The positions are 100% benefit eligible, full time, non-tenure track position at the rank of Fellow. The Fellows will provide pre-doctoral dental student clinical instruction at the dental school and take calls at the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery department at Truman Medical Center.
Minimum Qualifications

Full Time/Part Time
Full Time
Application Instructions
Contact Dr. Liz Kaz ([email protected]) or by phone: 816.235.2010 for further information.

As a current UMKC School of Dentistry Fellow, I would like to take some time to discuss my experience with the program. The position is primarily for dentists who are interested in learning more about oral surgery in hopes of matching to residency. I can truthfully say that I have been exposed to the full scope of oral surgery during my time at UMKC. The primary role the fellow position serves is to instruct and assist dental students. Working with and assisting dental students with difficult extractions has allowed develop my dentoalveolar skillset. I have performed simple tooth extractions, surgical tooth extractions, including full and partial bony impacted third molars, full mouth extractions, alveoplasty, tori removal, and maxillary and mandibular frenectomies to name a few procedures.

As a fellow, you have the opportunity to take in-house call at Truman Medical Center and Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City. Both hospitals are level 1 trauma centers. I have gained experience in the examination and management of all forms of facial trauma including motor vehicle collisions, dog bite laceration repair, and gunshot wounds. Aside from these, procedures you will become experienced in the management of dental infections, jaw fractures, and other types of facial fractures. There are maximum learning opportunities at these hospitals because trauma call is not shared with ENT or plastics. As a part of the responsibilities, you will participate with daily inpatient rounds and have the same roles as responsibility as a categorical first year resident. There are also opportunities to work directly with residents and attendings of the residency program during school of dentistry breaks. Overall, I have had an extremely positive experience at the UMKC School of Dentistry.

To apply for the position please forward your resume to the email above. A 3.0 or higher GPA and a hard working can-do attitude is required. If you have specific questions about the program do not hesitate to reach out to the contact above.

Tbh...oral surgery considers itself the top of the dental field. It’s also the slowest to adapt. Representation of women and minorities is decades behind anywhere else in the field. I think it’s ego and fear that causes all these problems. They won’t accept change. But that’s just me.

It looks like they won’t accept you either

The John Stroger Cook County Hospital in Chicago is looking to fill 2 non-categorical intern positions for the 2020-2021 academic year, starting July 1st. Our program is a full scope program with a very good variety of cases, covering all fields of the OMS field. We have 3 full time faculties (all dual degrees) and 2 part time faculties. We are adding another full time faculty, he should be starting in July and subspecialized in craniofacial.

Non-categorical interns are treated like categorical intern. We have 4 interns; 2 categorical and 2 non-categorical. As an intern your main responsibility is the outpatient clinic. In clinic our current interns are very comfortable extracting all sorts of impacted teeth (mostly impacted thirds), and managing medically complex patients, and are provided with the opportunity to place bone grafts and single teeth implants.

Interns will also spend 3months as a “pathology resident”, working closely with the Program Director on a daily basis. While on this rotation you will be heavily involved in the treatment planning and management of OR cases, as well as scrubbing into to the operating room frequently as 2nd assist, and even 1st assist on some cases. Our current interns have already begun cutting cases as first surgical assist (just the intern + attending) in our sister hospital OR (Provident hospital), for minor surgical cases such as deep bone biopsies, E&C of cysts, and nasal bone fracture. They have also been heavily involved in larger OR cases including having the opportunity to help cut Orthognathic cases, and even plating some mandibles, and reducing fractures. (the intern cut the orthognathic because he was good resident; hard work is rewarded in County). This rotation is the perfect opportunity to show if you have what it takes to get accepted.

Academics:

We have weekly lectures on Tuesday and Friday morning. We go over every topic covered for the in-training exam. We have an oral pathologist to review histology under the microscope + lecture once a month. We have Cadaver lab annually – we will go over all the popular surgical approaches. We have mock boards for the chief, however, lower levels are only spectator.

Call:

Expect to take primary call (6-8 calls per month, 3-4 of which are trauma call, and usually 2 weekends); the call is home call meaning you don’t have to sleep at the hospital. Cook County has an amazing emergency room & trauma team, meaning they can handle all the small non urgent stuff. You will only be called in for infection that are an airway emergency, traumas and Complex Laceration that are deemed cosmetic. The regular lacerations are closed by medical students under the supervision of the trauma doctors. Most other programs you will be up all night repairing small laceration so this is a huge bonus. We have a plastic surgery rotation in 2nd year, so we are very comfortable closing lacerations.

Lifestyle in Chicago:
Salary 55k
Easy to drive and easy to find parking in Chicago; good public transportation to hospital as well.
Rent ~1.4 to 1.8k for 1 Bedroom in the heart of the city
Chicago has tons are restaurant, bars and other entertainments
Cold winter, however, does not snow much.

This internship position is a great opportunity for serious applicant who want to beef up their resume and improve their chances of being accepted the following year, particularly given how closely you will be working with all the attendings including the program director, allowing them to truly evaluate you and provide strong letters of recommendation for worthy residents. We have a history of offering a position to hardworking resident. (hardworking means doing all your work, team player, knowing your patients & reading at home to become knowledgeable)

For those interested please provide your CV, Class rank, CBSE if available (heavily preferred), and any other information to the program coordinator Maire Leahy ([email protected]).

-other miscellaneous events during year such a plating workshops, grand rounds, and cadaver lab

Is anyone aware of any non-categorical positions that are still available for July 2020?

hello everyone
I was curious, do you require CBSE for internship and if not, What happens if you get accepted through your internship into the program, would they then require cbse to get accepted

Very few internships I believe don’t require a CBSE. It looks good for them if you match somewhere and you would need a CBSE to do that. It is very difficult to study for that exam while in an internship. I’m sure that there are some internship programs that don’t require CBSE but it’s not the norm, sometimes they just need a warm body.

If I had to guess, I don’t think there are any programs that don’t require the CBSE to matriculate. There are programs where you don’t need to do well to become a categorical, so you would need to take it just to say you did.

Thank you so much. I am working dentist for past three years and have now decided to apply after working with many surgeons side by side in private practice. it gave me an insight of their lifestyle and scope, so as I started looking into my options, I came across internship and residency for 4-6 years in OMS. I am an international student who finished advanced standing DDS program. I have been talking to many specialist and they all have different opinion about how are my chances. I have not taken cbse exam yet. It happens in august after the application has already started. I wasn't sure what should be my best course of action for me.
