Oregon State c/o 2024

Can I ask how you feel about the quarter system? Any pros/cons 🙂
Also any other “weird child” facts you’d care to share would be very appreciated!
I switched from a semester system in undergrad so with that in mind, I prefer the quarter system.
Pros: quarters are only 10 weeks so if you don't like a class, it will be done before you know it. We finish winter quarter right before spring break so you don't have any studying to do during the break.
Cons: if you like a class, it's done in 10 weeks, exams come up super quickly.
Weird stuff - Oregon is just a wacko state. If you've ever been to Portland, you'll know what I mean. Every year, a bunch of people dress up as witches and paddleboard down the river in Portland. It's very hipster which isn't necessarily good or bad, just a different culture from the rest of the US. Just a lot of stuff that makes you wonder how many drugs someone had to do to come up with an idea. It's a nice place, just kind of weird if that makes sense.

So I was planning on leaving straight from the school to go to the airport for my flight home, the only problem is I would have a backpack with me. Does anyone know if there would be a place to leave my backpack during the interview?

Being from Southern Oregon and having gone to OSU for my undergrad, I wouldn't agree that all of the state is weird. Portland is a very different area from the rest of Oregon. Portland is incredibly eclectic and has a rather unique niche for most things you wouldn't see other places. Definitely weird at times and, unfortunately dealing with a big homeless population problem currently. But, that being said, the rest of the state is MUCH different. Corvallis, being an hour and a half away, has more of a small town feel. The school makes up a good amount of their population size, and outside of campus is pretty quiet. There's still some really good restaurants and some shopping downtown. A big plus is its proximity to everything. You're an hour to Eugene (another hippyish city, but still a lot of fun), and hour and a half to Portland, 3 hours to Bend (Oregon's gem, central OR itself is beautiful), an hour from the coast. Southern Oregon is beautiful and has Crater Lake and is close to the Lava Beds, but a tad more rural and conservative. To the East is similar in that it's more rural and conservative, but is more mountainous desert than Southern OR and has a lot of beautiful geography like the painted hills and various hot springs.

The major draw for OR is being outside. The hiking, mountains, and scenery are pretty spectacular. Corvallis itself is a great college town, I think, especially if you're looking for a slower paced vibe. There are also breweries/wineries ALL over and the food scene is growing pretty fast.

Just my two cents! 🙂

Yeah as someone from Portland I also kind of take offense to the notion that Portland is too weird for existence lol.

There's many great things about the city as well as draw backs of course. It's going through a lot of growing pains currently.

Oregon itself has some of the most progressive legislation in the country (death with dignity, mail in voting, protections for LGBT+, accessible abortion, etc) but that's probably a discussion for another time (or thread lol). While area wise, the state may be majority conservative, voting wise it is liberal every year.

Just as a heads up for IS applicants, they interviewed 65 people this year for 40 slots.
hey !
I was wondering if there are study abroad options in Europe or Asia for fourth year rotations thank u! If I want mine approved with a neurologist I worked without do u think that’s an option?
Thanks so much !

Congrats and lmk if you have any questions about OSU or Corvallis/ Oregon in general!
Hey! I did have one quick question.

When does the rainy season start in Oregon. I sold my last motorcycle since I moved from CA to Colorado but thinking about buying another one to commute to OSU. I just hate riding in the rain so if I can only ride it for like three months of the year it might not be worth it to me

Would not recommend if you hate riding in the rain. The only months that are fairly guaranteed not to have rain are June-August. It doesn't rain everyday the rest of the 9 months, but is more likely to here and there from March-May and September-Oct and definitely will be more constant from Nov-Feb. Obviously, every year is different but dealing with a lot of rain in the Willamette Valley is a guarantee.

In my experience the rainy season starts around the end of October and goes through about April. We have had some dry seasons lately but a motorcycle might not be the best mode of transportation during the winter. Although from spring to fall riding is great and in Oregon we have some excellent rides if you ever decide to just get out and cruise.

In state applicants may or may not be hearing back this week. You didn't hear it from me.
My understanding is that they are meeting to discuss the interviews this week and make the final decisions. I'm not certain how long that takes but Tess said to expect an answer in early February. Good luck to you!

I pretty much agree with the above. In the willamette valley, we joke you can only really be guaranteed good weather after the Fourth of July (though this is changing a bit with global warming). You can't really expect no precipitation outside of about 3 months a year.

That said, the "rain" here isn't like rain in a lot of other places. I bike to class everyday, and there haven't been too many days where I arrive to class completely soaked. It's much more common for it to basically just continuously drizzle here. Heavy storms with loads of precipitation very quickly aren't super common. But if a light misting bothers you as much as legit rain, you would likely not be happy with the amount of time you could use a motorcycle without some precipitation.

The dean sent out an email this morning saying that in state admission offers "should" be sent out this week so I'd imagine they will get sent, though there's always the chance there's going to be a delay.

I haven't checked my email yet. I'm glad you mentioned that email. I am on pins and needles like most of us probably are. But now I'll be obsessively checking my email.

Thanks for the reply’s! I used to live in NC too and just remember days of downpours do that’s more along the lines of what I was thinking. I can deal with drizzle, especially if it means I get to get another bike ☺️

we are looking at living around 30 mins away from campus so I guess time in the car could serve as a podcast/lecture time too.

thanks again!

I wouldn’t really consider anything out here to be super affordable. You could try looking in philomath, which is about 10 minutes from Corvallis or Albany, which is 20-30 minutes. Those would likely be cheaper than Corvallis but I don’t really know what constitutes affordable in your mind lol

Anyone know how much movement there is for the waitlist for OOS?

I know a few who will be declining their OOS spots this year!
I also know some people that are likely declining their OOS spot (probably myself included!).
FYI this still might not mean people get off the waitlist. Virtually every school over admits OOS students (including OSU).

We had an open house the day before the interview.

Ok sounds good. I was unable to attend that due to work so maybe I'll be able to join the OOS people on the 20th.. I'll email Tess! Thanks!

Update: the 20th open house was full so I'll be joining on the 13th! See you there 🙂

I'll also be at open day on the 20th!

Does anyone know about OSU's health services? Especially if they have free counseling on campus? A limited number of sessions? Thanks!

Student health visits are included with your student fees, unlimited amount unless you get any labs done. There's a counselor who works for the vet school full time and that is free. Apparently he gets pretty booked during exam times though. There's also CAPS off campus with (I would imagine) free counseling but I'm not sure on that. I think most people just go through Alex (the vet school's counselor.)

I was also wondering about health services. At my current university I’m on student insurance but I can’t really seem to find a lot of info for OSU’s student health insurance/pricing? Is it just covered in the health fee? I have to get labs done every 2-3 months so that’s going to get expensive if it’s not covered.

I'm not on the school's health insurance, but here's the page with all the info: https://studenthealth.oregonstate.e.../lrg497_0719_osu_voluntary_highlightsheet.pdf
