Looks like Sarah has already starting calling people. Someone in my genetics lab got an interview for Nov. 14. I wonder if there are any spots left because that is the last day of interviewing for the second round?

OK...so I know I have confidence issues, but I am fairly concerned about my application. I appreciate that my MCAT is pretty weak, but I think my GPA is OK. I have three very strong LOR from faculty and 2 strong LOR from DO's and lots of clinical experience.

I hate to be one of those "what are my chances" people, but would ya'll mind looking at my MD apps and telling me what you think...no holds barred.

Thanks in advance.....T

You have a lot of clinical experience and a great science gpa. Your MCAT is not weak...I know people that got in with lower MCAT scores. Are you applying to the Bridge program? I see that you are Native American and you said you're from a small town, you would have a good shot at that as well. Maybe OSU has not gotten to our applications yet. The girl that I know who got an interview has been complete longer than me. They are probably giving priority to people who turned their stuff in really early.

got my acceptance this morning bohica. I interviewed two weeks ago wednesday.

Wow, I haven't been on here for close to a year I think. First of all I love DR. MOM and the other residents, but have to dissagree with some things. First telling students to not attend OSU-COM is the absolute worst thing you could do to the school and the students currently attending. Sending highly qualified students elsewhere is not going to help anything. The school will not close. The worst possible thing that happens is the residencies are either lost or sent around the country, JUST LIKE KCUMB, etc... Anyone that attends will have 3-4 years to see how the funding works out and where they need to apply for residencies at... This is a truly scary time for the 4th years and residents, as many do not know what will happen for next year.

As for the applicants: Good luck! I was an OOS. I did have a ton of clinical experience, but had a 27o and a 3.6 CumGPA and a 3.78 SciGPA. As far as interviews go, I think its kind of random. Last year I was in the first interview group on Oct. 23rd and there were also 2 other OOSers. Get your apps in early and sit back/wait. I did see that all the students for the first 2 interview dates were from Ok universities what its worth. For my class (2012) there were 1780 applicants. Roughly 400 instate and the rest were OOS. The average MCAT was a 27, avg cumgpa was a 3.6 and a 3.65 scigpa.

I chose OSU because of the student body, the faculty, and location. You really need to come by, take a tour, and meet some people to get a true understanding of the nature of the students. Also, the faculty here do an outstanding job, as you can see by the schools records on the national boards. I love this school and haven't run across any that regret their attending OSU-COM. I will work on getting on here a little more frequently so feel free to send me a msg or post on here if you have any questions and I'll work on answering them for you.

Please, please beware. As I said before, I have been a huge OSU-COM proponent. As things stand now, I have to say that I cannot recommend attending OSU-COM. I strongly recommend that none of you continue any further with your applications to the school. Apply somewhere else that is more stable. Let me explain.

We residents had an emergency meeting today with the AOA. The AOA stated that they did not know about the goings on here until they were contacted by a resident from here a couple of weeks ago. This means that the school administration blatantly lied every time that they have said that they were working closely with the AOA on the movement of the residencies. The AOA met with the school this morning for the first time. They met with us afterwards. The school is planning on applying for residency approval based on the $20 million in the OSU Healthcare Authority fund and later trying to get funding from the state to support the residencies. The AOA said that none of the residency programs will be approved unless there is indefinite funding. They also stated that there is barely enough time to fast-track approve these new residency programs as it is. Basically, everything needs to be set now in order for that to happen. The legislature will not be in session for a few months, so it isn't like the funding will appear in the next few weeks. As things are now, there are no residencies at OSU as of July 1, 2009. I know that the administration disagrees with my assessment, but I'd love to know how they're coming up with indefinite funding for 130+ residents and fellows in the next few weeks when they've been unable to do so thus far despite working on this over the past few years.

They also are messing with the medical student rotations. The core MS3 rotations are going to be done in Joplin, MO for the rest of this academic year (and, I assume, longer if the St Francis thing doesn't miraculously come together in time). The AOA was very suprised to find out about this from residents this afternoon, as the school administration never mentioned this to them. Core rotations are a key part of medical education. The impression I got from the AOA folks is that the school can't just move those kind of rotations to another site (let alone another state) without approval.

I don't know what the administration at the school is trying to do, but what they're accomplishing is going to be the demise of the school.

Again, please listen to me on this. This is a huge deal.

What is the deal with this?! I am debating canceling my interview. This is a big deal from such a great school... ??????????

You guys looking at the school just need to realize that all of this is in flux. The status of the residencies does affect your MS3/4 rotations. I truly hope this all turns out okay, but I don't want people going into this situation without good information. Many will choose to still go to OSU and that's fine as long as they've heard both sides of the story rather than the school's candy-coated version. As things stand right now, the situation has been stabilized for a few months. I truly hope that will give time for the AOA to guide the school, for the legislature to get their act together, and for there to be a truly positive solution to the school-hospital situation.

Brandon, me telling prospective students that this may not be the time to apply to OSU is not the worst thing for the school. The administration is covering that arena very well by themselves. Hopefully, now that the AOA is finally involved, things will be remedied for the benefit of the school, students, and residents. Med school is a huge investment: I don't want to have prospective students blindsided by something that was predictable based on the current situation.

Dr. Mom, I am in complete aggreeance (sp?), they should be informed. But it is one thing to be informed and another altogether to flat out tell people to not come here. There will be very qualified students that may decide to not come here due to exclamations like that. With all of this going on we need to be the strongest school possible. Trust me, I'm mad at somethings too. I think our PR department is a joke. I'm tired of being told the information like its coming from a politician. I'm tired of OU being catered to by the media and legislature, BUT I still love being here. I don't know that everything will work out for the best, I've never claimed that, but I do hope it does.

Students: come, interview, ask questions, if you see one of us in the hall ask us about it. Don't take my word for it, but come and get a consensus from the student body and get a feeling for the school. If you really like the school then you should attend. I had multiple acceptances and came here because of the students and faculty, not the hospital. Just my .02.

none here.

Are the NOV. interviews the last until Jan?

There are more dates 2 next week, 3 the week after, and 3 in December according to sarah q. Not sure if they are all filled

Wow, intersting issues going on at OSU. On a different note, can anyone tell me if an OOS student will get in-state tuition after the 1st year like at various other schools?

The issues are interesting and should be noted. I do think the issues will be worked out by the time our class gets there. It doesn't effect me much as I will be choosing family medicine, and doing my residency in Durant if accepted.

No, you won't qualify for in state tuition. By Oklahoma law, the student has to work and not be a student for 12 months before matriculation to qualify for in state tuition. You can qualify if you marry an Oklahoma resident. You will not qualify if you are already married and your spouse works full time.

I hope they're not all filled 😱 At least things are moving a lot faster...👍

any news?

Are interviews prioritized by date of completion?

...

I am pretty sure they are prioritized by completion.

I don't think they are prioritized by completion because my friend got an interview for Nov. 19th and she was not complete as long as me.

Hey guys! It's been a while since I have posted on here as well!! I am COMPLETELY with brandon on this one. I am an MSI also and I absolutely love being here despite everything that is going on. This journey is VERY difficult and a constant uphill battle and the staff and my classmates have made it so much easier that it could have been without the support and care. We are a family here. I have heard both sides and consider myself to be very informed on this issue and still do not regret being here. It's the best decision I have ever made and truly believe I am getting the best medical education possible in this state. I highly respect the opinion of the residents that have commented on here but I was a little miffed to read them telling you prospective students to run away basically and not apply here. You need to hear both sides and be informed but you need to make the decision yourself and definitely do not need to be told to "not apply here". That's only worsening the situation. You need to still go on interviews, visit the school, hear everything for yourself, and make your own decision. I am very confident SOME resolution will come about that does not result in the demise of the school. Everyone may not be completely happy about it, but that's life. If I have to rotate somewhere else, I will make the best of it and deal with it. We are still going to be doctors and the best ones we can be.

Also, if any of you get interviews, please let me know! I want to come by and meet you guys because there are very few of us SDN followers! Shoot me a private message or email me ([email protected])! I'm rooting for all of you!!

Hey, I'm glad you guys are having a good MS1 experience, as did I. I'm much more concerned about your MS3-4 training, which is what is at stake.

Again, I have consistently been a huge advocate for OSU-COM. I want the school to continue to be a stronghold of quality Osteopathic medical training. While I absolutely want the school to do well, I also want the people applying there to have the best opportunities available, hence my previous caution. Notice, I didn't tell anyone outright not to attend, just that I personally couldn't recommend it at this time with this administration. I'm honestly sharing my opinion based on my over 6 years of being in the OSU-COM system, seeing the preclinical, clinical, and postgraduate aspects (which have been excellent up to this point).

OSU-COM has been a superior school for both preclinical and clinical training. The quality of the clinical training is potentially at serious risk. The risk is not because of a possible move to another training site. The risk is because this move has been so eggregiously mismanaged that it is not viable, yet the administration of the school refuses to consider other, actually viable options.

As an update, the MS3/4 and residency situation is not improved, but is looking up. At this point, it is no longer just the residents and attendings who are voicing concern about the administrations plans, now it also includes the Oklahoma Osteopathic Association, Tulsa Osteopathic Medical Society, and the mayor of Tulsa. (I have attached both the OOA position statement and a letter from the mayor to the resident who is serving as the liaison between the residents and the mayor.)

BTW: The administration of OSU-COM has now missed a deadline with the AOA regarding paperwork on the funding of the residencies, should they be moved.

I want to reassure you that I *am* on the side of the current students at OSU-COM. I was in your shoes not that long ago, and, along with my fellow residents and our attendings, am trying to preserve a quality clinical education for all of you and everyone who comes behind you. I truly hope that in the coming weeks I can return to recommending that people apply to OSU-COM this year.

There are several updates in the Tulsa World and Channel 6 news.. I believe you can find all the stories at the "Worlds" website and KOTV.com ( I believe) Last night Channel 6 finally made the statement I've been waiting to hear. How is it that OU's med ctr in OKC can get 40 Mill a year and we can't get 10 - 20. Especially if you take into consideration that the vast majority of our students stay in OK to practice and we are consistently beating OU in national rankings. Right now the Mayor and several City Commissioners have gotten behind a plan to place OSUMC under the control of a public trust. Letters have been sent to Gov. Henry and the student body are also sending letters to members of the legislature. I'll see if I can't link the stories I've had sent my way...

There are more, but you'll have to search. Hope this helps. As I said earlier, feel free to message any of us if you have more questions..

You guys, students and applicants, can definitely help out by individually calling, mailing, and emailing your legislators. They need to have as many people as possible reminding them that OSUMC is needed, not just by the students and residents, but also by the community of Tulsa and the surrounding areas. Reminding them of the huge discrepancy of funding between OU/OSU and OKC/Tulsa isn't a bad idea, either. There is no reason that Tulsa, NE Oklahoma, and OSU should be expected to shoulder the burden of indigent care without any compensation. (Keep in mind, also, that OUMC takes the $40 million in state funding and then applies for matching grants from the federal government. The discrepancy is much larger than the original $40 million.)

If you do not know who your area legislators are go to www.lsb.state.ok.us/ under Legislative Information System you will see a link called Find Your Legislators. Click on the link, type in your address and you will be provided with your legislators names and contact information.

I think they probably have given out all the interviews left for the fall semester. My friend told me she was offered with December when they called her for an interview last week. Guess we'll be doing some more waiting...

Thats def good to hear. OSU is my best shot, being an in state applicant. The articles posted earlier about the future of OSUMC were a bit uplifting. At least more people are knowledgable about the problem.

just wondering... Is it too late to apply, I know the deadline states February of next year... are spots already nearly filled?

I don't think all of the spots are taken, hope not. As long as you are before the deadline and meet all of the minimums, you technically have a shot. You never know until you try.

Best of luck

You're putting way too much faith in the administration. This has been an ongoing issue since before I started my 3rd year of medical school almost 4 years ago and it's not resolved, it's worsened.

I'd think that they're overly optimistic about getting this hashed out in 6 months, it too my program that long just to get re-approved in an existing program with no issues. As long as Goljan is still there, the first 2 years of training will continue to be excellent, but 3rd and 4th year rotations are really a learning curve, and after seeing all that I've seen, I personally would not go to a program like Fl-LECOM, LECOM, Kirksville, CCOM-AZ, or any program which farms out the clinical years all over the country due to inconsistant training. I see students from several of these schools which have no clue what's going on clinically due to inconsistant training at places which are not equiped to teach students. My biggest beef with much of the Osteopathic mentality is that there are many who hang on to the belief that we can hang onto the old school apprenticeship type of clinical training all while the scope of medical knowledge has grown exponentially, this is really just not the case IMHO.

I can't help but wonder if the state isn't intentionally dragging their feet to force the school to close so they can lavish all their monies on OU. I know, it's far fetched, but when you look at the massive disparities in funding, you can't help but wonder
xxxxx,

The Governor's response that there were other problems to solve in Tulsa first;

That's not what the governor said... he said "I applaud OSU President Burns Hargis and St. Francis Hospital for their leadership and collaboration in constructing a plan to save the residency program, but there are additional issues to address in Tulsa." My interpretation was that he was frustrated with how resolutions in the past had been mishandled... it's not that he thinks this isn't important.

For anyone who hasn't read it. Here is the governor's response. http://kotv.images.worldnow.com/images/incoming/pdf/0811/GovernorResponse.pdf

Sorry but reading this thread has gotten me really scared about applying to OSUCOM. I dont really understand what is going on or the problem. Can someone provide an unbiased simple explanation since everyone seems to have differing views or opinions.

Brief outline:

  • The hospital administration and med school administration do not get along.
  • The state has not provided funding for the indigent care provided at the hospital.
  • The school decided to move the residencies and student rotations to another hospital but didn't follow the procedures you need to in order to get it approved by the accrediting bodies. Because of this, the move of the residencies to another hospital in Tulsa is unlikely to be approved by the accrediting bodies.
  • Without residency programs, the quality of the school's clinical rotations are in jeopardy.
  • There are many people (legislature, mayor, etc) supporting keeping the residencies and student rotations at the current hospital with different leadership.
  • It will likely be a few months before we know what is going to happen.

Things are actually looking much more hopeful than they did even a few weeks ago, but still in limbo. The best option for the students, residents, patients, and community is to keep us in place at the current facility *with* state funding for the indigent care.

I got an interview invite today and I am OOS, but not sure if I will be going due to lacking funds and other acceptances. I called Sarah back but got her voicemail, so I am not sure what month they have interviews available. Good luck to everyone still waiting for an interview, I was complete september 9th, so there is definitely still time if you were complete more recently 👍

I was also contacted by Sarah today for an interview. She offered me December 3rd or 5th, which means there are still open spots for that first week of December.

Yeah I got called for an interview today as well. If you haven't gotten an invite yet hang in there! If you did get a call today then I'll see you in December!

Congrats to all those interviewing in December. But I have to admit, I'm a little bummed. I interviewed in March my first year, January last year, and I was hoping for December this year.

Oh well, keeping my fingers crossed... 😳

I am in the same boat as you Chi O just hoping for interview this year

Bump..

Little Update: Apparently December 6th is the new deadline for legislative action. There has been a huge uproar of public and media support for saving the hospital as of late, so that's encouraging. The student body and residents have been working diligently with contacts and informing as many people on the issues as possible. As soon as I hear anything new I'll post. We have a deans hour with administration friday morning and I'll also update then as well. Applications/interviews run extremely long and late into next year. I know of several MSII's and a couple MSI's that were accepted less than a week prior to white coat, so don't lose hope.

Well, these posts have definitely had an influence on me. I decided to apply to OSU-COM based on hearings about how great the school was. But after reading about all these posts and how terrible the school admin. seems to be, I decided to give up my interview.

Good luck to everyone and hopefully for the sake of OSU, Tulsa, and OK, these issues get resolved quickly.

New Rule, if you cancel your interview you must give it to Saylorsdad "that's me". If you don't give it to me, you must give it to someone else on SDN.

I talked to Sarah Q just a couple of minutes ago and Dec. 3, 4, and 5th are the last interview dates until about the 3rd week in January. But she said they are still trying to fill a few spots on those three days. So good luck to those of us still waiting!

I will second..sailor's motion......

It could be a long winter break...

I will also be calling Sarah to withdraw from my interview not because of the problems OSU is having but because of other accpetances and I am BROKE, hopefully it will go to one of you, saylors and noble!! hang in there and good luck!! 👍:luck::luck:

www.tulsaworld.com/osumc

St. Johns stepped up this morning to run the hospital.. New developments daily... This link should take you to all the articles posted the past few weeks..

Wow...people are cancelling their interviews. One of those needs to go straight to me
