Pacific Northwest University (PNWU-COM) Discussion Thread 2013 - 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I saw an old listing for the Vue Forty Two apartments that listed a 2 bd apt for $850-875. I'm pretty sure that's the apt complex on Nola loop.

If you are interested in Vue 42, I would recommend calling the apt manager and getting a feel for when would be best put your name down for the wait list if there is one. Last year there was a super long wait list. I think I put my name on it in January and never got a call back. (now I'm not sure if it was because I was never actually put on it, or just because I never called back to check my status) But moral of story is to make sure you are proactive. Places like Nola Loop, and the Vue are popular places to live since they are close to school. Another tip I would suggest is to join the 2018 FB group if you are accepted and planning to attend. As it gets closer to Spring and Summer 2nd years will start posting housing info, as they leave for rotations.

Thanks for the heads up! Are you on the 2018 class page yet? Roberie are you? I know I would appreciate any advice or tips you may have.

No. I'm just a fourth year with too much time on my hands.

Can you give your opinion on the Systems Based Learning at PNWU? I've done some research on SBL vs. PBL but it sounds like SBL has a lot more variables than PBL as far as how/where/with whom it is taught. Thanks 🙂

got an II a little bit ago, but will likely turn it down I don't know yet =/

Received an email for an ii on March 8th, but it appears (from the previous threads) that these interviews would for waitlist positions? I hope that isn't the case this year!

I also received an interview invite for March 8th! I am worried though because I'm flying from the east coast and it is not worth the money if its just for a waitlist position.. Does anyone know if this is definitely the case?

Things were different this year so it might not be the case. I do know that I interviewed last year at the same time and was told they were for wait list spots prior to interview day. I was offered a deferred acceptance plus a spot on the wait list. I was pulled off the list in May but chose to defer. From my experience I would say don't discount the interview as a waste even if it is just for a wait list spot.

I was also offered an II for March 8th. However, I was told that I could request to be put on the wait list for an interview on January 11th in case any spots open up, so the March interview date may still be for regular acceptance and not just for the wait list.

I can't really speak to PBL vs. SBL since I only know the systems based side of things. For us we were basically married to our Cecil's book for the entirety of second year. Much of it was self study with minimal lecture time. Each system was around four weeks. I have no complaints. I doubt one is appreciably better than the other. In the end I guess the gauge is how well the curriculum prepares you for boards. Our school has been pretty successful in that regard.

Sorry I basically said a whole lot of nothing.

Hello all! Stalked this thread for a while now and was wondering... for those that got an interview, how long did it take to hear back about an interview after you got your self service account?

Thanks!

I just sent in my rejection letter to PNWU. I hope someone here gets the spot! Best of luck!

Do our deposits have to be post-marked by the 14th or reach their office by the 14? Waiting to hear back from one more school before accepting.

Do you guys know how heave this school is on MCAT scores?.. Mine is pretty low and was wondering the chances of getting an ii from PNWU-COM

It depends on where you're from and how low that score is. If you're from the Pacific Northwest, then you have a much better chance (they have regional bias). I believe their MCAT average was around 26ish last year, so if you're out of region, I'd try to stay above that. However, it never hurts to try!

Im not from anywhere near the Pacific Northwest.. Im down in TX... i just sent in my secondary last week.

This school has a strong regional bias. When I interviewed, there were only about 4 of us out of 30ish who weren't residents of the NW, but all of us had some sort of ties to the NW. I was in the first batch of interviewees so the number of OOR applicants was probably lower than normal. Best of luck to ya though.

Thank You.. I appreciate the good wish. The email stated that they would take 3-4 weeks to get back to me on a decision... the days are slowly dragging by..

Withdrew my acceptance on Friday. Great school and I know several current students, however I believe another school was ultimately a better fit for me. Best of luck everyone!

Does anyone know the acceptance rate after you interview?

hey all, this isnt specifically pnwu question (although I've applied here) but rather a DO question in general. I am an MD and a DO applicant, and I've interviewed at two MD schools but have not heard back yet. The thing is, I genuinely like the experience I've had with DO's over the past few months and, to my fault, was not as learned about osteopathic practices until the physician i was shadowing discussed it with me and recommended some literature. I find I would be better suited for primary care and came to love the holistic approach and OMM greatly, and think I'd be happier at an osteopathic school.

The thing is, I assumed that most DO schools required a DO letter so I put off my applications until I could get one. Being really busy and not doing thorough enough research, I now see that not all require DO letters. So I ended up applying pretty late in the cycle completed 7 applications by the 7th of Dec. How much will being this late affect the likelihood of admission? I know no one knows for sure, but I've noticed a lot of SDN'ers have a lot of knowledge about what adcoms think/how they operate.

BTW, my stats are:

top 20 UG school
cGPA 3.51
sGPA 3.49
will have a master's in physiology by June, GPA:4.0
MCAT 32 (13PS, 10BS, 9VR )

decent but not stellar ec's and experience

lol. sounds like you're worried about not getting accepted by an MD school so you just started applying DO. Based on your numbers, most of the osteopathic schools you apply to will probably offer you an interview. Get a letter of recommendation from one of the DO's you shadow to show adcoms you're committed to the osteopathic profession. With a DO letter you can also apply more broadly (which you should do, considering you're pretty late). PNWU only has 2 interview dates in 2014 (January 11 & March 8). I believe January is filled up already and March is very close to being full as well.
Good luck!

Anyone gotten an interview recently? Applied a bit late and have not heard anything yet

I just checked my status again today and now I am listed as "Committee / 12/23/2013", so I should be hearing something any day now.
mine said that since 12/12 and I have not heard anything from them yet. The email said it takes 3-4weeks or more for them to review our materials... so it will probably be a while before they contact us with a decision

Good to know, thanks. I'm trying to plan my road trips a bit in advance, and know they have interviews Jan 11th. I already have one the week of the 13th.

Hey there. I submitted around the tenth or so and got my interview invite 7-10 days later.

For those who have interviewed here. How did the 5 minute file review with faculty go? It seems it would be difficult to adequately review your applicant file in that amount of time. I certainly have some take home messages, but will their questions be broad enough to convey them?

btw interviewing on 1/11 and super stoked.

The 5 min interview for me ended up being the guy asking me a couple of questions about some weak spots on my application, as well as asking me some open ended questions about how I felt about some of my experiences. It was super easy, don't sweat it. He didn't seem like he was trying to point out my flaws or trick me, he seemed really interested to know my side of the story.

I was asked why DO and about my B in Anatomy. After that we just talked about football. Since I had strong ties to Eastern WA, they didn't ask me why PNWU, but I know they asked other out of region applicants that question.

There was no 5 minute file interview on the day that I interviewed; there were just too many applicants.

Hey everyone, I just got a last min II on the 11 of Jan. I live in the Vancouver/Portland area and was wondering if anyone wants to carpool?

Same! I had an interview scheduled for March 8, but called Hope during the break to inquire about any last minute openings for Jan 11 and was able to reschedule earlier. Whoo hoo! I love this school and Hope's been fantastic! If any of you are interviewing in March and can make it to the Jan 11 interview, you should call to see if there are any openings left. Good luck to everyone!

I just checked and mine says that too! I didn't get an email though. Does this mean we should be expecting an interview email??
Hello rkmoto121,

We should be getting an email invite. If you look on the Checklist it shows that they have a deadline to contact us of 1/8. I think we will get an email next week.

I really hope I can get in on the interviews on the 11th!! I have interviews stacking up in March, and would like to just get into PNWU and withdrawal from the others. Would save a ton of money!!

I would want the 11th too but if they notify me next week I may not be able to get to it because I have to fly in from CA. January would be the best month ever if I got an 11th interview though. I would have three interviews and a birthday this month

How long does it take to hear back after interview? I still haven't heard a peep.
