Philadelphia COM - Philadelphia (PCOM) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Does anyone know the percent of in state applicants who get interviews/accepted compared to out of state applicants who get interviews/accepted?

No clue what the percentages are for this one. I just want them to GET ON WITH IT. D:

Seriously, what is the hold up this year? We are like a month behind last year's cycle!

Maybe the class has already been filled. Hush!..

At least I'm not the only one waiting (impatiently)! I don't know what I'd do without SDN, worrying myself to death alone. 🙂

Seriously. This website has been one of the greatest supports through this process in terms of advice and helping me brace myself mentally with all the other addicts here!

FWIW, interviews are starting next Wednesday. Hang in there, folks. 👍

I know a classmate who works with admissions and they will be starting interviewing folks this coming Wednesday.

I'm not so sure about that, surely one SDNer on either the PA or GA threads would have posted about an II, and I don't see any.

He's probably not lying. It's probably someone from their post-bac program. If I'm not mistaken they have a guaranteed interview for a certain academic performance in the program and certain MCAT score.

It was my impression they interviewed late in the cycle with the students in PCOM's 3+4 and 4+4 programs.

I can guarantee you it's not the biomed students (i was a student in the program) their interviews happen later in the cycle. I think he means invites start Wednesday?

You guys do realize that there is less than 30 of you posting here while PCOM receives thousands of applications to select applicants for interviews from...? Just because n = 30 didn't get an interview invite doesn't mean that the school hasn't sent them out.

Anyway, I'm not at school this month but one of my fellow PCOMers can confirm this next week if they take a stroll by the fishbowl.

What? Are they not even giving a weeks notice? That's kind of crazy..

Agreed. That is absolutely crazy, but it's exciting knowing that invites are finally going out!

Congrats to those that have already received them!

I mean, it's fine for me since I live half and hour away. Maybe they are only inviting the instate/locals this quickly?

Are you instate, casperi009?

It must be this because there's no way a school would invite individuals from a distance long enough to require a flight on such a short notice.

At the open house in the Spring of last year I took down notes and wrote down that 67% of their class is from PA (which would maybe include Delaware because of their interest in that area/etc).

well bro i hav got sum bad nooz....

haha ya... no one is gonna be there...

I call BS

+1, someone would have posted something here

That's ok guys, you don't need to apologize for being rude to a PCOM 4th year who came on here to help you guys settle the debate of if PCOM will be interviewing towards end of September or not.

I just hope you aren't this impatient and condescending and rude to the admissions people when you call them or visit them....👍

Since I'm being called out for my "condescending and rude" behavior, let me explain my comment and cascade of thought....

I'm a researcher, so I form my conclusions from data. In this case, PCOM-PA and GA threads; using two threads therefore increased my sample size. This should have made my guesstimations more representative. From the data I had at hand, I formed the hypothesis that II's hadn't been sent out yet. I also know full well to take every thing I read on SDN with a grain of salt.

Were you correct in saying that interviews start on Wednesday, even with just a rumor from a friend? Yep! Were we all correct in saying that no II's had been sent yet, at least among our small pool of self-selected applicants? Yep! My conclusion is now that II's have indeed gone out and are starting Wednesday and Thursday of next week, given the data I now have on-hand from, again, a small pool of applicants.

I hope to never be a powertripping MS-IV who trolls SDN for praise from premeds.

I hope when we go through medical school we won't demand some sort of empty respect from others just because of our educational/career status. Something to keep in mind on the road to success.

To stay on topic, yay for invites finally going out!

how do you know?

Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using SDN Mobile

Pretty sure Rollo wasn't demanding "empty" respect. We don't waste our time trying to come on here to place ourselves on pedestals. We are already in medical school and we have a lot of important things to be focusing on. Rollo's point was clearly that they had honest knowledge about something being questioned and a poster had the nerve to act like it was made up because no one on sdn had received an invite. I was about to share the same info until I saw they had already shared.

Applicants may not realize, but some Pcom students are invited to interview on the panel. I'm sure some of them lurk on here, so in hindsight, yes, it pays to be respectful. Even if you may find it empty. Or make sure you are not easily identifiable.

If anyone wants some honest info, I'd be happy to answer any questions you have! I'm not close w the application committee but would be happy to find out answers for you the best I can.

A lot of strong applicants don't post. They just read threads. "I am pointed at YOU." lol.
I heard mix things, II invite end of Sep or interviews end of sept. Doesn't really matter because the process starts late anyways for all of us.

Hello SDN community!
Well I think I received some bad advice from my premed advisor. He told me to wait until I received my 2nd attempt MCAT scores before I applied. I didnt submit my AACOMAS app until August 24th. Just worried that my app is too late and I will be interviewing for a waitlist spot. This school is by far my number 1 choice!!!!! Hope I didnt shoot myself in the foot
let me know your opinion.
Stats:
3.69 sgpa
3.7 cummulative gpa
27M MCAT
Good EC's
5 yrs of research with 1 Publication
letter from MD not DO

I dont have much experience with stats etc. but dude 3.7 gpa with an avg mcat should be apply apply apply. I hate these bs pre med advisors who sit there thinking they know everything.

Agreed. Pre-med advisor at my university told my roommate that he would not get in, and that he should reconsider applying. He's just started his second year at an MD school.

I have a question:

Does PCOM send interview invites to candidates who do not meet all the prerequisites at the time of application? i.e. english or biochemistry
What about other DO schools?

Thanks!

99% of schools just require that you meet the requirements by matriculation. Some people will wait to find out if they're accepted before fulfilling a class that they lacked during the summer before matriculation. You're fine.

I think it's Touro-Nevada which pre-filters applicants and doesn't even send the secondaries to those who have deficiencies in their pre-requisite courses. Many didn't get secondaries due to that. Those who contacted to school were sent, but then, the school seems like put them on-hold for an interview invite... 👎 Check their school specific thread this year. Some of the applicants hadn't taken one or two of the "behavioral science" courses, but have already completed all the rest.
