You have committed SDN blasphemy. I think trash-talking Mayo is actually a TOS violation.

I agree with you though, but only in white text for fear of being banned.

This is true, I think it is against TOS. It's def a contrarian standpoint to not love Mayo. Nevertheless, it certainly isn't "THE" school for everyone (regardless of what SDN dogma dictates).

Don't get me wrong, some things are pretty cool...the history is warm and fuzzy, the gonda building is magnificent, a piano guy playing passionately in a lobby is a nice touch, the tunnel system is badass, the "mayo" name is nice to show off in medicine.

But, if you aren't a fan of the curriculum, the location, the class size, and the travel accessibility -- it's a hard sell.

Also "Scholarship farming"? At the end of the day, if it comes down to the money I hope and suspect a school would not be offended that I liked other schools too, and may choose them if the financial situation is better. 🙄 Money is important to people and schools I interviewed at seemed to understand this.

Hence why I didn't say one, I said four. You've already narrowed it down to three in this thread, so I don't really understand your feeling defensive about it.

these polls and forums aren't supposed to trash-talk schools. it's completely fine to discuss positives and negatives of a school (expensive, location not a good fit, program not a good fit), but saying a school "sucks" is unacceptable. please keep that off SDN forums. we're here to provide input to help tots with the decision-making process. try to eliminate that attitude and language!

This is pretty funny.

1) saying Rochester sucks (ie that "PLACE") isn't trash talking mayo. Reading comp 101.

2) until your a mod, wanger, don't dare try to lecture me on how to use sdn.

3) if the word "sucks" is extreme language to you, you're going to have a hard time in life once you leave your wanger-bubble where everything isn't heart smileys.

4) i saw when there was that uprising of sorts against you in the school-specific threads. You annoy a lot of people. If I annoy you by not loving mayo and saying rochester sucks, for the love of god, put me on your ignore list.

Feel free to apologize publicly in this thread for stepping outside you boundaries (and being wrong to begin with)

Yikes. Someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning..

I don't think it was wrong of her to tell you that saying somewhere "sucks" is completely unhelpful.

I wasn't in a bad mood. In fact, I was perfectly calm writing my thoughts earlier (and still am).

There seems to have a disconnect with what you think old wangers said and what she actually said.

She didn't say, "Blais, saying that Rochester 'sucks' is vague, be more specific."

Instead she basically said my usage of PG-rated language is too extreme for SDN and that the forums aren't for "trash talking schools".

So first she misread and then followed up by trying to play teacher by giving me a lecture on the "proper use of the forums". Thanks for helping a noobie understand SDN -- I was in the dark all these years! As I mentioned above, I said the location sucks. It does. No, really, it does.

Also, as I said earlier, if PG-rated language is too extreme for someone to read on the internet then lord have mercy when they hit the wards. I imagine deer-in-headlights scenario the first time an attending drops R-rated language (gasp) at her in the OR.

Lastly, I mention the fact that she is welcome to put me on her ignore list. That's what a bunch of people did to her in the thread-specific threads -- I'm referencing them simply so she can follow suit and ignore me if she can't handle "Rochester sucks".

Lastly, in response to you, saying a place sucks is only "completely unhelpful" if the person you are talking to has no frame of reference for what you mean. "Sucks? How so?" Looking at Tots' OP, gee, look at Mayo's con's:

Mayo
+Middle of the road costs (~200,000k/4 yrs)
+Impressive facilities, resources and name
+Curriculum with selectives
-Rochester(As a gay male, moving to middle of nowhere Minnesota scares me)
-Rochester
-Rochester
-42 students seems a little small
-Less resources for my interests

I don't need to waste characters telling Tots why Rochester sucks compared to Chicago, Philly, SanFran, Nashville, etc. He listed it as a con himself...three times in a row. If anything, I am offering a declaration that I agree with his analysis.

Rochester: that place sucks.

All that said, guess what? I'm still calm and not mad.

To add a dissenting opinion, there are many who would consider Rochester an excellent place to study medicine. There are fewer tempting distractions and it is an environment very conducive to get done what you are here to do. When we do want to party, we do it happily here or with an occasional, easy trip to the Twin Cities. It's not college anymore - grow up folks.

Dissenting opinions are valuable and I certainly agree with your ideal:

"If you are looking for a location with fewer tempting distractions (college sports/pro sports/musicals/shows/LGBT events/cultural events/culture dining/museums/close winter sports/hiking/etc) and an environment conducive to studying... there aren't many better locales than Rochester, MN." 🙂👍

As for your little jab at the end for people to "grow up"... well, I'm not so sure that sacrificing living in a desirable location for years so that one can reside in a place more conducive to studying as a tell-tale mark of maturity. 😕

The Twin Cities has all of these things. The point that I am making is that by not having ready access to these EVERY weekend can be, and is, very helpful. I hardly consider living here to be a sacrifice and I'm quite sure the majority of my classmates would agree. An adjustment, yes, but I don't in the least feel deprived.

👍 Agreed. To my understanding, Twin Cities (as a city) does offer a lot more than Roch.

I don't doubt you that the majority of your classmates are very happy and thoroughly enjoying their time. This only further exemplifies the issue I mentioned earlier in the thread:

Mayo has a lot of cool facets/amenities to offer it's students; however, it isn't "THE" school for everyone. (I'm not lecturing you -- not at all -- I'm sure you agree with me that different schools have different fits. I'm just echoing my original sentiment for all the lurkers.)

If you choose to attend the school in Rochester, most likely you are the type of student that fits their mold. Just as the student that chooses to attend Harvard fits their respective mold, UCSF to UCSF's mold, Vandy to Vandy's mold, etc., etc.

I don't doubt that you're thoroughly pleased with your choice -- you weighed your options and came up with a final decision. When it was all said and done, you fit the Mayo mold.

Gosh get out of here with the "grow up" stuff and telling people not to say a school sucks. We have freedom of speech and are allowed to say what we want. We are adults. And speaking of adults, Tots has to make a decision. As a gay male I can totally see how Rochester detracts from one's happiness. Don't get me wrong, Mayo is fantastic!!! But it comes with a price: four years of your life in your twenties. With the other great options on the table and the academic prowess im sure Tots has, I think he deserves to be in a vibrant gay friendly environment where he can let loose as much as possible without suffering career/schoolwise.

I see a lifetime donor ban coming. 😍

I have a friend in UChicago and he loves it, so I change my answer from Mayo to UChicago, actually. Also, Chicago's an amazing city.

You've earned those acceptances and the ability to hold onto them.

+1 hold onto the schools you are still considering! no rush 😀

Don't quote me for this, but Penn is usually very generous with scholarship money (especially to someone with your application/stats) and I would not be surprised at all if financial considerations will play a much smaller role in your decisions.

The second look weekends should also help considerably with your decision making process too.
