Purdue c/o 2015 Applicants!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Nothing in the mail today - how lucky - I get to contemplate my rejection letter all weekend....

Mine is on the 21st. If you need any suggestions or help navigating Purdue, just let me know and I can try my best to help you!

I'm on the 21st as well - part of the "early morning" registration group.

Anyone know if that means we interview earlier in the day? Is there an actual assigned time?

Talking with past interviewee's, you won't find out what time you actually interview until the day you arrive. I had friends in the early group last year and she had to be there at 7am, then sit around and wait.

Hey all you Purdue applicants who haven't heard anything yet.... Have you received anything? Cypress, you're close to Purdue right? I'm in Indy and still haven't gotten anything. 🙁

Yeah I'm in Indy too - but it doesn't look like any mail has come yet today - it should be here soon - i'm torn because I half want the letter to be there and half don't - I am logically sure I will be getting a rejection letter but a very tiny part of me still has hope and that is a dangerous thing because it will only make the letter that much more difficult to recieve - so I am ready for this just to be over so I can figure out exactly what I will be doing this year to beef up my application further.

I'm in West Lafayette and have not received anything yet.

Another day and no news.....

Anyone know anything?

Hey guys. I was wondering if anyone living in Indiana can tell me how the weather is during January. I know regardless I will freeze but I just wanted to make sure. Also does it snow in janurary? I've never seen snow 🙂

Bring LOTS of layers, and a jacket/gloves/hat if you have them. I don't think you would be outside a whole lot, but if you have boots, I would bring them with. January weather here is unforgiving at times, but I do like it when it snows! I think in Jan, most days are pretty windy and then add that with the temperature and it can easily feel like 0 degrees or below. As long as you are bundled up, it makes things more bearable....and I drink a lot of coffee and tea! What helps me is wearing multiple layers, warm socks, and having a good pair of gloves. I think the weather sits somewhere around 10-35 degrees on a normal day, but it's hard to say because it is Indiana weather we are talking about here. I just know when I had a flight from Chicago to Orlando back in last Feb, I still had my ski jacket and boots on and people thought I looked crazy!

Yeah I'm thinking no news is not good news - which was expected - none the less - fingers crossed to some sort of closure on this waiting game tomorrow.

On the weather in Indiana - I agree - layers layers layers - and if there is snow you want to make sure you have waterproof shoes - nothing is worse than wet socks on a cold day - and from what I've heard about the interviews they last all day

I got an interview!! (But others don't be dishearted, I got rejected last year, stick with it) I'll be there on the 21st in the early morning as well. Does anyone know how the format of their interviews are?

Search SDN for interview information on Purdue - I know I've read threads before from people after their interviews that will give you info on what the interview will be like.

Congrats!!

SJB, check out the Interview Feedback link at the top of the forums. You can select your field and the specific school, and that'll tell you all about it!

Received my rejection in the mail today, not really surprised.

Yeah.... I have had my mail forwarded to where I'm living now.... I figure mine is in the mail and there's only a matter of time till the USPS gives me the news...

And that's all she wrote....

Snail mail rejection letter recieved today.

No profile yet - they will be sending them in January to let us know where we fell in the applicant pool.

Good luck to those of you still in mix!

I'm jumping on the rejection letter boat too. 🙁

Thanks Purdue for ruining my Christmas. I really wish I would have applied elsewhere this cycle. Ah well... on to next year.

I don't know if you guys have discussed this before or not, but does anyone else find it maddening that Purdue is the only school that blatantly favors OOS vs. IS (taxpaying IS!!! whether you or your parents pay doesn't matter, still tax dollars). So not only are IN residents screwed by their IS school, we don't have a contract with anyone else or WICHE or anything. Add to this the fact that the "extra" seats that were added on to the incoming class are also for OOSers. Kind of a giant slap in the face, IMHO.

Are there more spots available for OOSers than ISers? I didn't know any school did this... :O

I'm an IS student and I got a rejection letter today as well. I realize things change a lot from year to year but I really thought I would get one considering I was on the wait-list to be in last year's class. 🙁

And I know exactly what you're talking about Marsala, though I didn't want to believe it at first. But I learned the hard way last year just how Purdue feels about IS students. 🙄

You realize that numerically, yes, Purdue offers more seats to OOSers, but you're totally ignoring the fact that there are far fewer IS applicants than OOS applicants? And the total composition of the class has more ISers than OOSers?

Look:

111 total IS applicants, 70 interview - 63% interview rate
548 OOS applicants, 211 interview - 38.5% interview rate.

So no, Purdue does not favor OOS applicants at all.

And:
47 out of those 70 ISers interviewed offered admission - 67%
85 out of the 211 OOSers offered admission - 40%

And the composition of the class:
43 residents, 27 OOSers.

That doesn't sound like OOS favoritism to me at all, I don't see where you're coming up with those statements. It certainly doesn't seem any different from other schools. Again, they don't interview as many ISers as OOSers because there are about 1/5 fewer IS applicants than OOS applicants...🙄

Oops, didn't see the post above me before I posted... Nevermind.

If they make more offers for OOSers, they don't know upfront that only a certain number will accept. And of the interviews granted, more could be given to IS students.

http://www.vetmed.auburn.edu/home/education/admissions/summary-and-stats

Using Auburn as an example, 85% (including contract, which is essentially IS) of their class is IS.

http://www.vetmed.ufl.edu/education...ts/UFCVM-AdmissionsInformationClassof2014.pdf

For Florida, 89% is IS. I still am going with the idea that if more OOSers accepted the offer, there would be more OOSers in the class.

Another example: Washington. 94 out of 99 seats are allocated for IS/WICHE/contract. The OOSers get 5 seats. Even though there was an application pool for OOS of 556. Fewer IS/contract/WICHE applied, but the percentages favor them.

Hi everyone!!! it's good to see many people are making the interview! I'm scheduled for 21st. I can't wait to see everyone!!!!!! 😀

Very interesting. I'm due to apply first-time to Purdue this coming fall, but those stats make me think about MOVING. However, Purdue is still the cheapest IS tuition I know of thus far, so it might be worth trying to stay in-state. ?

Be happy you at least have an IS status! I will forever be OOS cause NJ is going down the tubes with education. And I will tell you, it is soo much harder for OOS because we barely get offers. Money is the only reason we have been increasing in seats, and its not just Purdue, most vet schools I know are upping their OOS seats because of the added income. I can't blame them in this economy. I hope :xf: that i will get accepted, but i will also pay twice as much as IS. 🙁

For those who got bad news, I've been there, last year was a waterfall of rejections and it made me so depressed. But keep focused!! Ask for their evaluation of your app, re-take (I know you don't want to) the GREs, take extra classes, and keep up your experience. If you are close, maybe ask to come in and talk one-on-one with an admissions person so they know you and see you are determined. Reapplying demonstrates that you are determined to be a vet and they notice that. Good luck with your other schools! All it takes is one 😉 to say yes.

So, I have an interview on the 21st and have a question to ask of those of you interviewing the same date...

Would any of you be willing to share a room at a hotel with me? and possibly a rental car? I'm flying in from California, so I plan on getting a room Thursday and (possibly) Friday nights. But, as a broke student, I would looove to share a room with another interviewee (separate beds of course!! 😛).

A little about me: I'm a 21 year old female, really friendly and smell good 😀. Feel free to PM me!!

Recommendation!

Check out Lafayette Limo, $50 round trip from airport to West lafayette area. If you can get a hotel at the University Plaza on Cumberland Ave, West Lafayette, the Limo will drop you off at the door! I live in the apartment complex right next to there (The Lodge). My interview is on the 21st at 7AM if you need a ride!! Or if you get a hotel anywhere near a Starbucks I could go out of my way that morning for ya as well =)

Hello! Just wondering, my parents are unable to attend the banquet the night of my interview. Is it unprofessional to bring my boyfriend? Is anyone else bringing a significant other?

Thanks!

I will be going with my boyfriend. My parents cannot come with me to see the school.

Is anyone getting a little a bit nervous about the interview. I am still in shock about it but pray and hope I do good in the interview :/

I'm so excited about going to this interview!! Its going to be my first interview and I am soo nervous. But I have faith in all of us here that we will rock it!! :soexcited: I am spending the rest of this week reviewing the questions and info about purdue and my application.

Ditto! I'm stoked. I've been working on answers to all the questions for the past few weeks. Today: buying a suit, in spite of all the damn snow.
SJB, it looks like I'll be seeing you at Purdue AND at Tufts, since we're on the same days for both!

I wouldn't worry about bringing a boyfriend! When I was in Missouri, a few folks had brought their sig other and the school was super welcoming and happy to have them there.

Also there were a few non-trads, so it didn't really make sense for them to have their parents with them. 😉 I think the school understands that you're an adult and boyfriends come with that territory.

I am interviewing on the 28th and will be in W. Lafayette on he 27th, so if others have places they would recommend to eat or do on the 27th I am all ears. Also if others are around on the 27th and just would like to get together to eat or what not, that would be cool too!

Interview buddies!! We shall conquer the west and the northeast! lol, Just checked the weather too, Blazing high of 13 degrees on the 21st with a low of 2. :scared: I was planning on wearing a skirt suit, now I'm leaning towards long underwear under pants and a sweater!

Yes please on the conquering. 😉 We shall have to rock it. And band together for moral support.

RE: weather, OMFG I know. Every day before and after is like, fine. Friday? Absurd. One report I saw said a high of NINE. And windy. Sounds like a great day for a campus tour! :scared: I'm trying to plan so I don't roast indoors but also don't get frostbite. Fortunately I'm driving so I will just pack everything I own.

Also, anyone know how "fancy" the dinner is going to be? I'm guessing I don't need to wear my full suit, but perhaps nice pants and a dressy top? Any other ideas?

I saw the weather too and it is freezing. Mind you I coming from a place that the is 60 degrees and the highs are upper 70. Crazy!!! I can't imagine how could 9 degrees is. :/ Does anyone know good places to go in West lafayette and good places to eat?

I'm not interviewing but am a current student here, so I have food suggestions (though there's really not a lot here, IMHO).

Within walking distance of campus:
Boiler Market has really, really good pizza. And other stuff, too.
Khana Khazana has a good Indian buffet.
If you want to try a Purdue tradition, go eat at the Triple X. Love their biscuits and gravy. (open 24 hours!)

A little drive (you could walk but it's gonna be COLD):
El Rodeo-good Mexican and I think they have an 80 oz margarita
Nine Irish Brothers-Irish food (a little different) and live music

A slightly longer drive:
LaBamba's (by the mall) has burritos as big as your head. There used to be one right off campus that was huge with the late-night bar crowd, but INS came in and cleaned house.
If you head out State St/State Road 26 East from campus, you get chain restaurants: Olive Garden, Chili's, Bob Evans, Cracker Barrel, Denny's, Steak & Shake (open 24 hours!), etc.

From others that I know that interviewed here in the past, dinner is at the Union, so look nice, but I don't think the suit is necessary.

Hope that helps! Good luck to everyone!

Anyone have hotel recommendations close to campus, and not tooooo expensive?

I didn't think about changing, but then again, I wasn't planning on wearing a full suit.
btw, do you have a morning or afternoon interview? I have to be there at 7am (8am eastern thank god). Maybe we can grab lunch afterward as well?

Marsala, Thanks for the restaurant recommendations, that Triple X sounds mouthwatering and the 80 oz margarita would hit the spot after an interview 😉

I kind of figure I don't WANT to hang out in my interview clothes all day, since I'll probably want to put on sweatpants and drink afterwards! 🙄 I'm also in the morning group (have to be there at 7am omfg I HATE Indiana's messed up time zones and lack of DST). I would LOVE to grab lunch afterwards! Theoretically I am meeting up with a local friend at some point, but since I have like 10 people to see while I'm in the state and my ability to coordinate is minimal, let's plan on lunch. 😀 I love it!

Congratulations on getting an interview! I just booked my flight that will get my into Chicago O'Hare on January 27th around 1p CST and my return is around 3:30p CST on January 29th.

Rather than dealing with connecting flights, I'm renting a car and will drive down to Lafayette. Anyone that needs a ride is welcome to join, just PM me.

Good luck all!!!
