Night 0: Don't Let the Bed Bugs Bite
Welcome back from the weekend!
As usual, the school is already bustling long before the doors open. The football players are in the gym working out. The track team is out on a run. The band is getting in some extra practice. A couple of overachievers have already been here for an hour putting the finishing touches on their science project, and that one kid is here for their teacher’s office hours as usual—gotta keep a perfect score in the class. Even the cheerleaders get here early to work on their routines during the middle of the season.
Out in the school courtyard, the student body begins trickling in and dividing off into their cliques. The theater club is practicing their lines, and the gamers have commandeered a long line of tables to play Magic and Pokemon—and as happens a least once or twice a week, some jerk reaches over and knocks a bunch of cards off the table, making a huge mess. A couple of kids in dark clothes are off in the corner jamming out to death metal. The whole area is permeated with whispers of rumors of who did what with who over the weekend, who had too much to drink at the parties, and which kids are way out of date with their fashion. If you paid close attention, there’s a faint but instantly-recognizable scent, and no one is quite sure where it’s coming from.
Finally, the bell rings and everyone starts gathering their stuff and filing in. As usual, as the doors start closing a bunch of kids rush up at the last minute, barely avoiding being late; one kid zooms in on their skateboard at the literal last second, scuffing the paint on the door yet again.
After dropping things off at their lockers, students make their way to their homeroom. As is not an uncommon occurrence given how huge the school is, a new transfer student is introduced. Attendance is taken, and while the same kids who notoriously cut school are out, it does seems like a few more kids than usual are missing. Maybe that kid who claimed they were “no longer contagious” after staying out only one day for COVID was full of it…
Everyone waits for the principal’s announcements, but for some reason they’re running super late. Maybe he’s running late this Monday because he was up late (what the heck this “queebing” is that’s he’s muttered about doing that keeps him up at night, nobody can say…)? Regardless, eventually the kids just stop waiting and start having their own side conversations.
Suddenly, a blood-curdling scream rings out from the office. Someone finally knocked on the principal’s door, and opened to a horrific sight. Principal @GoSpursGo ‘s body lies slumped across his desk… and is covered from head to toe in the school mascot:

A large crowd gathers in shock. One kid tries to defuse the situation with a joke about the smell. Another, somehow, has decided that this just HAS to get posted immediately on Instagram and has whipped their phone out to get multiple shots. Never waste a good opportunity to get noticed, I guess.
While there is a truly prodigious number of lice and they seem to be gnawing at his corpse mercilessly, one can’t help but notice there is an awful lot of blood in the room. And that gash on the front of his body, could lice really DO something like that…? Eventually, the Assistant Principals @WildZoo and @kaydubs usher the kids away from the ghastly scene and back to class.
@WildZoo comes on the overhead speaker with a shaky voice to break the news to the entire school of GoSpursGo’s untimely demise. She promises that there will be a full investigation into the matter, and urges the students to come forward with any information or suspicions that could be of use. She then proceeds to halfheartedly read the rest of the planned announcements for the week.
Finally, after almost forgetting, she adds, “After tabulating the results of the election:
the Class President for the day is @apoptosis09 .
Congratulations. apop, please see Assistant Principal @kaydubs after first period.” There is general murmurs of assent. While nobody at SDN high is universally liked, that is a reasonable choice for President. Seems like a strong leader, which the school needs today as it faces this crisis.
After first period, apop goes to KD's office as instructed. KD says, “Thanks for coming—we need your help. Things have been weird here for the last several months; Spurs’s death is just the latest in a long line of strange events. We’ve tried to keep it all under wraps until now to keep the students calm, but obviously this was too big to contain.”
“We need the help of the students to get to the bottom of what’s happening here at our school. If you, or any of your friends, have any idea who—or what—might be behind all of this, please bring any information you have to my attention. As Class President, I’m going to PARTICULARLY listen to anything you have to say about the matter.”
With that, apop left KD’s office, and spread the word. Something bad is happening at SDN High, and everyone needs to figure out what’s going on.
