Anyway, here was the thought process behind the overall design and balance of the game.
We knew that we wanted this game to follow the show canon as closely as possible, which made for some profound design and balancing challenges and I'm so glad that we had 3 brains trying to tease through them.
The game started out with as the following:
- 7 villagers, who were various bad place demons because there aren't enough characters otherwise.
- Good Janet as a neutral 3p - as Zenge was a sandbag, we did not have a wincon for him. Before he got yeeted, his vote did count and some night actions would give him a result, mainly for the lulz.
- Trevor, Bad Janet, and Shawn as a Bad Place Demons faction with the wincon of hunting down the humans
- Michael was a 3P whose wincon was to create an item to help each faction, so he was the only one who started the game with knowledge that it was a factional game.
- Eleanor was a lost wolf who knew she was a lost wolf, but did not know her wincon was to hunt the Bad Place Demons, as she didn't know that at the beginning of the show. Jason also knew he was a lost wolf because he knows right away that something is wrong, but he did not have a wincon specified either. Tahani and Chidi were separated from the group as well, but were not told they were wolves and were just floating without wincons. Each night, we added one of them to wolf chat - that was the plan, but the game did the whole "this is the bad place" thing earlier than we were planning to do it as a Big Reveal, so we adjusted the timeline based on that so that we could add Tahani and Chidi in, give the wolves their wincon of hunting down the demons, and add Michael to demon chat.
The villagers were given individual wincons and would have won as a group if 4/7 had completed their wincons by end of game and any were still alive. They were at 3 at the time the game ended. They were basically inclusive 3Ps, but we couldn't think of a better way to balance around the story.
