*-*-* The Official TMDSAS Questions Thread 2011 *-*-*

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
None of them took more than half a page to write for me. If anyone needs help answering these questions, like I said before, I already did them and I don't mind sending you what I wrote... I wish someone had done this for me... 😉

hey noshie. do you mind letting me see what your answers to the secondaries for TCOM and texas tech look like? I have most of them done, but it's hard for me to submit because i don't know if my answers are that good.

Sure, I will PM those two schools to you now...

And welcome to SDN! 🙂

How long does it take to get verified on TMDSAS? I submitted on the 4th and it still says it is processing.

Will the people at TMDSAS update Planned Activities? This should be one of the categories where applicants can update info themselves. I can't say for sure what I'm going to be doing 3-4 months from now. 🙄

Agreed!! I have no idea what I'm doing next year and I'm afraid to leave that portion blank.
Anyone have any input?

OK, I emailed them and they said that once you submit, they WILL NOT update that portion of the application. I suppose I could email the deans of the medical schools and tell them. What do you guys think?

Cardiac, I lack some shadowing hours, so I'm planning on doing that. Assuming you have enough ECs/volunteering/shadowing hours, well, I guess you could put down vacation plans?

LOLLL, yaa I wish. It'd be nice if I could let them know about my future plans to travel to the new Hogwarts theme park. Or not.

I'll probably email the deans as well. Seems most practical bc there is no poing in adding something on the apps that isn't concrete. Everything is game for interviews, so just make sure that if you put down shadowing for your app, you make it happen. It'd suck if you didn't get the opportunity and they ask you about it.

Hey, you never know, maybe your interviewer really likes Harry Potter. It'd be a nice icebreaker...

"Oh, I see here you've been to the Harry Potter theme park! What was your favorite ride?!" 😀

what i would do about planned activities:

fill in what you know for sure now
if you get an interview from a school, send them an update letter at the end of summer with information about new activities

does anyone know if i should call schools to see if my file is complete or should i just trust that everything is ok? tmdsas transmitted my stuff on 6/9

I know it has been discussed, but i haven't really gathered enough information to make a decision...

I took the June 17th MCAT. I have completed my Personal Statement and received all my LORs. I had previously taken the MCAT back in April and scored poorly on it. Should people in my situation submit the TMDSAS application before our second MCAT scores are in?

Is it possible to verify transcripts by applying to a school we aren't interested in and adding the other schools once the MCAT scores are released? I know this is how the AMCAS works, but i wasn't sure if this applied to the TMDSAS too.

Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

I believe you can, and should submit before taking your mcat. At least that's what my pre-med adviser said. Especially since you can't input a score anyways. Just make sure you release the scores to TMDSAS after they come out.
Good luck!

I was thinking this also. Mine were sent 6/1/10 and I have heard nothing. You can check your status for some of the schools online, just look for their secondary application pages. None of my statuses say anything about receiving my primary, and I have already submitted the secondary for all of the schools that had one. I think I’m going to call TCOM right now and ask. I’ll let you know.

Ok, I think I have figured out what is going on here....

TCOM said that they have not even downloaded primary applications from TMDSAS yet. So although TMDSAS says that it has sent your primary to the schools, the schools decide when they want to pull the applications, and they will not be doing this for a few weeks. I'm thinking that all of the schools are the same way...

Admissions told me that everyone will get an email when the primary comes in. You can still do the secondary now and they will match it with your primary when they download it. You can also send any other materials (LORs or anything else) now and they will keep it and then match it with your primary. The online status will not say they have anything from you until they match your primary with your secondary.

I would say that everyone should just be patient and not call about their statuses, the received emails will go out in a few weeks when they download the primary.

...it's not even July yet. Remain calm.

Says the guy that's going to get into every school he applies to... Hehe. 😉 I would be way calm if I was in your position right now too! Can't wait to see how this year turns out for you!

Psh, please - that ain't happenin. I'm just as nervous as everyone else. But harassing people about your application when it's July seems like a bad idea to me.

haha i'm not really stressing, i was just wondering what would be a good time frame. i know everything is going reallyyyyyy slowly

I doubt this will soothe your anxieties, but to offer a timeframe from the app cycle last year - I didn't hear anything at all from the schools until the end of the 3rd week in July, at which point I received my interview invites for the end of July / beginning of August. After that, I never heard a peep from any of the schools until Nov. 13.

I submitted my primary app during the first week of June and completed the secondaries a few days afterward. Most of the schools never acknowledged receipt of my completed app.

Take a deep breath and try to distract your mind with other activities. The interviews and acceptances will come. . . eventually.

Yes, it typically takes 4 to 6 weeks for TMDSAS to process your information and have it ready. If you can imagine TMDSAS verifying every transcript that comes to them, and confirming that every grade on every transcript is accurate, and that it reflects what everyone manually typed into their application. Just the transcript verification process alone can take weeks.

If you turned in your application in it's entirety on June 1st, then it most likely wouldn't be finalized until around the middle of July...so this waiting period is completely normal. Imagine this process pushed back for an applicant that submits their application in late August or September...not good.

Out of curiosity, when TMDSAS issues the apps to the schools, does it break up the GPA by year (like AMCAS)? Not sure if this had been asked yet...

They used to a few years ago when they had a different system for the application. Back then you could see exactly how they calculated your GPA and they gave all the details, similar to how AMCAS does it now. Pretty sure they still do this, but now they don't let you see it...

Figured they did something like this. Thanks.

So on my transcript section it says "Received/Approved" and on the schools section it says "TMDSAS processing"

Am I verified, or no?

I know interviews starts in August but do you guys know when the schools will start sending out invites in July?

UT schools all send out on the same day, starting mid July. A&M sends out shortly after. Last year the first I'd heard of were July 10th from UT schools

When entering terms attended do they want us to put the same year throughout(i.e. freshman year: 2007 fall, 2007 winter, 2007 Spring) or is it (freshman year: 2007 fall, 2008 winter, 2008 spring)

Thanks.

On the last question for Techs secondary are yall just listing stuff, and not making it a cohesive paragraph?

I listed for the first 2 questions, the rest I wrote in paragraph/s

If you have already taken the MCAT and have sent scores to TMDSAS but are taking it again to try and improve, is it possible to get an interview before your new scores come back?

Yes, but it depends on how low your first score is and how good the rest of your application is. If they want to wait to see improvement because they think it will make you a better candidate, they will wait to offer an interview before the new scores.

Well, I feel like my score is good enough for some schools but not for others. I was wondering if the schools than I am already competitive for could offer me an interview even though I said I was taking it again.

It’s hard to know, the score alone will not get you interviews... It’s all about the rest of your application paired with your score. That’s what will decide if they extend an interview.

To be more specific, saying that you are going to take the MCAT again will not automatically exclude you from being asked to come for an interview. So if you think you are competitive otherwise you should be fine. But you can call these schools and ask what their policy is on people retaking the MCAT as it pertains to being reviewed by the adcom. Ask if they put your app on hold automatically just because you are planning on retaking…

has anyone got their application processed yet? does it usually take 2 weeks for TMDSAS to process the application?

Why is TMDSAS so slow 🙁

I actually wouldn't mind paying a bit more so that they could hire more people to process them faster!

Forgive me if this has been asked already, but did you guys use roughly all 2500 characters on the optional essays (primary)? If you didn't, how long were they?

Thanks 🙂

Mine was 2496...... I dont think you have to get exactly 2500 but it should be around 2000

If I see 'TMDSAS processing' on my screen one more time, I might have to do something drastic, like this...+pissed+

1. Where in the world is the printable transcript request form?

2. When it asks which non-Texas schools you're applying to for 2011 entry, do you really have to enter all of them? I feel like I'm not understanding the question properly because I know AMCAS doesn't release your school choices to each other, why would TMDSAS?

maybe some one could help us because I was interested in Texas schools, but I don't know where to start.

Someone has asked this question already but there was no answer.

If your grades are reported in credits or units, you will need to convert them to semester or quarter hours.

I am on a quarter system, grades are given in terms of quarter units. Aren't units the same as quarter hours?

I emailed TMDSAS and all they said was to "look on the back of the transcript". My school is unfamiliar with TMDSAS and there is no conversion on the back of the transcript.

Thanks!!

I just Google'd "TMDSAS transcripts" and found it from there. Don't worry, it's not in a place that would actually make sense.

Not sure, but I included all of the AMCAS schools I'm applying to.
