Touro COM - New York (TouroCOM-NY) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
secondary received this morning...I've heard nothing but good things about Touro NY from alum and friends that are different schools/residencies in the area...it's a lot of money, but any chance I have I'm going to take it....

Checked my emails and learned that I got the secondary.. I thought it was an interview offer since I've already forgotten that I applied to TouroNY. I'm a NYC type of personality, but I have mixed feelings to submit this one. $200 is a lot of money after spending hundreds in this game so far.

Secondary received, finally, so does this really mean interview invite?

Just got my secondary. I have never seen so many SDNers so hesitant to submit a secondary. That is a very bad sign for this school! Makes me question the quality of this school if no one (including myself) even wants to submit the secondary. Im going to let it simmer for a few days then decide if I want to submit!

SDN is only a small population of applicants. I'm likely not going to submit mine. $200 is just too much at this point.

well its not that i think the school is bad by any means, its just 200 is a lot of money for me and im waiting to see what happens with lecom and alabama.

I also received the secondary this morning. I have a decent MCAT but a lackluster GPA. It would surprise me if they were really THAT selective sending their secondaries out considering I got one.

You bring up good points. Ya 200 dollars is very expensive. I am just unsure of the school myself so Im going to do some research on the school before submitting.

yep i just spoke with director of admissions and they are very hesitant when i ask them "does secondary = interview?"

he says "well, it's HALF truth, bc the faster u submit it, the faster u have a shot at getting an interview, but the window narrows as you wait"

idk if i will be submitting

I got the secondary as well today, I think I might wait a month or so to see how my interviews at other schools go before submitting here, $200 plus flying across the country is a little steep for me right now.

$200?

Wait until you get your tuition bill.

I got my secondary today but I applied over a month ago. Has anyone who has had their application in for over a month not received one? I find it hard to believe they only send out 800 or so supplemental applications and that it pretty much equals an interview.

I submitted my primary on 6/1. I just got it this morning as well.

Do we need to answer all questions listed in the personal statement section? I find it hard to answer "why Harlem"...Honestly, I don't actually care...And if I have to choose, Harlem is probably not the place I would like to be at for the next 4 years...>_<

Just curious, does anyone know the turn around time from interview to decision? And the decision window they give you, and with what deposit?

Thanks.

Haha I agree, I am going to skip the "why Harlem" question.

Then don't apply.

They actually asked me that question at my interview, so you have to have a thorough response.

I'll leave this application on the backburner for now... $200 is a lot and I really can't answer "why Harlem?"

I went on a tour a couple of months ago. We were told they get about 6K apps. They send out 800 secondaries TOTAL and interview pretty much all of them. If you are very persistent and show interest it seems like they will accept you . . . It also seems like they have a lot of movement off their wait list.

One thing I did not like - the tour guide mentioned that when they start pulling from the waitlist, they call those chosen. If you don't answer your phone they call they next person on the list and give them your spot. I hope he was kidding . . .

They are not kidding about the phone call thing. I was on the waitlist last year and was called by the admissions director and told exactly what you have stated...that if you dont answer the phone you may lose your spot.

The school is very nice actually. They have all new facilities including a top of the line anatomy lab. They are very high tech. All of the lectures are on Itunes U podcasts and all of the tests are taken from these lectures. If you get a question wrong on a test they actually tell you what lecture and at what time in the recorded lecture the answer can be found. They are on a mission to be an excellent school and are extremely progressive. I guarantee that you will leave this school with a positive impression if you take the time to interview.

OK. 1. Im a first year here at Touro and I love it so far.
2. For those of you who cant answer a simple, Why Harlem question. I STRONGLY encourage you not to apply. The school is smack in the middle of Harlem and you will be VERY familiar with the area if you go here, especially if you choose to live in the area.
3. You will not have enough time to get involved with the unsafe parts of Harlem, trust me.
4. For some people who are saying they don't want to pay $200, especially those saying their stats are lackluster, I encourage you to turn it in as soon as possible, unless you have interview offers raining on you, don't be the one who turns down an almost sure interview.
5. The itunes lectures work great, you chose when you want to watch your lectures and they are available for you at any time. Never need to ask yourself what you missed. You have to go to campus everyday, so don't worry if you are one of those who usually has to go to class to feel like good. Monday are test days, Tuesdays we have interactive sessions where you have questions and answers from the lectures you watch and you are also quizzed, Wednesdays are some live lectures and lab, Thursday and Friday are also lab days.

Glad to see you got in, man. I actually interviewed with you last year and remember you had a pretty rough interview. Best of luck!

This school sounds ridiculous especially considering it isn't very high up on the totem pole. Not submitting.

Good luck everyone.

True, not at the moment ranked very because of the age of the school, but I guess the admission committee is being more and more selective. nevertheless. Class of 2014 step 1 pass rate is currently at 97% with almost all the class reporting. class of 2016 is projected to be top 5 of all D.O programs in terms of GPA and MCAT averages. I guess people really want to go to school in NYC

How do you like going to school in NYC?

i also received my secondary today. I love NYC and would want to work at a hosp there someday but the $200 fee is even making me question submitting this app. are they oos friendly?

i was curious about the "strength and mobility"part of the tech. section. Im an EMT so im use to CPR but i do not in any way considered myself "strong" im 5' 2" and barely over 100lbs. How much "strength" are they talking here, im not the type of girl youd ask to lift anything heavy or move a big box. =|

The whole strength thing is only let you know that as a doctor, you will sometimes have to move patients and patient limbs whenever they are unable to, you might never have to do this based on the field you go into. We have only had a couple of OMM labs, but you might also need to be able to palpate limbs (which might involve holding them up unaided by your partner in order to give the best palpations, be able to lift a human head (about 16 lbs i think). You will also need to be able to move your cadaver around, but you can ask one of the guys to move it. I think if you can survive as a paramedic, you will be just fine :) To answer the previous question, life in NYC is great, not because I get to do things, nope, i have no time, lol. But simply because I have things here to do, if i can find the time. its more psychological

Oh, and i think about half our class are not from the state of NY. I from Texas, so they are oos friendly

Bear Wrestling was just added to the COMLEX this year...:corny:

But really, I think you need to be able to lift 40lbs. Isn't something similar part of EMT certification?

Before I even submitted my primary, I knew I would like to apply to this school as I had read that secondary=ii and at that time I didn't think I would have received the multiple interview invites that I have been fortunate enough to receive. Now that I FINALLY got this secondary, I am seriously having 2nd thoughts due to $200 fee. Add this fee to the $$ I would be spending to fly from CA to NY +hotel+taxi is making my head spin. I can easily spend this much $ to fly to multiple interviews. I think I would wait to see how my other interviews go and then decide if I should shell out the ridiculous $200.

Ughh...this bolded part is making me think that I might end up regretting not submitting this secondary ASAP. Sigh...Only if I had a money tree or a rich uncle (like that poster in pre-allo forum ))....:p

so let me get this straight

its the most expensive secondary app fee

its located in the most expensive city in the country

its located in a kinda dangerous part of the country although it is or has gotten gentrified

and two pages of personal essay?

and its not DMU or CCOM or PCOM....

HMMMMM:confused:

Both of those statements are factually false. SF is more expensive. NYC is surprisingly safe (except of the Bronx).

Submitted, it's a high fee, but I've already given away thousands of dollars on this application cycle and I'm definitely feeling the crunch. But being a native new yorker and growing up not too far away from harlem (relax, I was in the burbs), I cannot give up a chance to move back and get to go to medical school....good luck everyone who decides to submit!

How do you plan to get to school (if not already living in the walking distance)? I used to plan to live in Clifton-Hackensack-JerseyCity and commute using the buses and metro thinking of that I won't be given a parking spot at school (or, do they provide with it?). Commute to and from school is my major concern to TouroCOM-NY. I think I can handle with the city quite well.

Yes, if you get the secondary you get an interview. That was my understanding and I interviewed here last year. I think it's worth the $200 for the guaranteed interview.

I got my secondary today but I applied over a month ago. Has anyone who has had their application in for over a month not received one? I find it hard to believe they only send out 800 or so supplemental applications and that it pretty much equals an interview.

can somebody confirm these statements?

Yeah I am curious about this as well. If secondary = interview, I guess I might bite the bullet and pay the $200 fee

I suppose if a secondary = interview, then the two page essay is not so bad to write since a quick and dirty version will do. Also, it's a two page limit, so even one and a half pages I'm sure is perfectly fine.

hmm,, have you guys seen their match list?

i mean  in terms of getting to allo or specialty field granted this school's mission statement is to produce primary care physician....

can someone advice on whether to send in my 2nd or not? I lived in NYC 10 years ago, and I just hated living like a rat and I am afraid that is what I would probably get living near the school no?

Tons of schools (MD included) say they want to produce PCPs.

I would, or could, live at my patents' house, which is a 25-30min commute by train (metro north). That's one option, but you could always enlist other med students to get an apartment to keep costs down --my friend is at jefferson and that is how he manages. I also have a friend completing her residency in NYC to stay with as another option. It is all doable if you explore your options, Touro should supply more info and assistance should you be accepted, I think most schools do this...

Regarding where to live and things like that, usually if you are really interested in a school, you can ask current students where all the med students tend to congregate. I live in Pittsburgh right now, and the medical students and young doctors tend to live in a distinct neighborhood area, and the law students in another. Our friend is here from Miami doing a year of research and he had plenty of resources from U Pitt and others recommending where to stay, where to eat and things to do. I think as you get acceptances and things like that, schools will tend to flood you with information on getting established if you are not from the area. Hope that helped.

Pretty stupid question here. Does 'Why Harlem' include East Harlem?

Pretty stupid question here. Does 'Why Harlem' include East Harlem?

NYC'er here.

IMO yes. Harlem is all the Harlems: east, central, west, spanish, Hamilton heights, strivers row.

TouroCOM-NY is technically in 'central' Harlem. 'Central' Harlem is an area probably originating from real estate in order to shrink the boundaries of what can be considered 'east' Harlem, where people don't want to buy/rent property. If you know about the NYC area, this is probably a similar phenomenon to the expansion of 'east' Williamsburg (desirable), shrinking bushwick (less desirable).

TouroCOM-NY aims to train physicians for all of Harlem, and NYC.
