Touro COM - New York (TouroCOM-NY) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Their secondary is asking everything that was already included in my personal statement (except why harlem) Did you guys essentially copy and paste from the AACOMAS PS or start from scratch? The reason I ask is because I spent tons of hours on my PS and had many physicians, researchers, and mentors look at it.

I had the same problem for pretty much all of my secondaries, including this one. I made a whole new essay, I doubt they want to read my ps twice. I know it sucks, but maybe focus on why Harlem more, and other aspects you didn't cover in your ps.

I wrote a whole new secondary, too, using various paragraphs from other secondaries. I did this for the topics that were applicable anyway. Why Harlem required a little more effort. I spent weeks revising my PS but considerably less time on TouroCOM's PS, so the latter is less clearly structured. It primarily covers the questions they told us to consider. From what I gather, the PS just needs to be coherent because secondary = interview so long as you turn it in early enough.

Speaking of which, I read last year's posts and those students seemed a lot more convinced than we do that secondary = interview, at least more convinced than I am. One student even said: "i just called the admissions office and the lady did say that secondary = interview." This year, all we have to go on is that this is "half truth."

All students who have yet to complete the pre-requites for the program will be admitted on a provisional basis and are expected to earn a grade a B or better on those courses.

wait does this also mean that people who have already completed pre reqs cant have any Cs in them?

They probably ask you to retake that course.

NYCMag disagrees: http://nymag.com/daily/intel/2012/09/manhattan-still-the-most-expensive-place-to-live.html

If your interested in safety, just google Harlem police blotter.

Manhattan is not all of NYC. San Francisco has a higher cost of living and is more expensive then NYC (the city, not just the borough of Manhattan). I agree, there is crime in Harlem, but it is not the most dangerous place in NYC.

I think you're reading into this wording too much. In my eyes they are absolutely referring to incomplete pre-requisites. So, if you're still in school and have not completed a required course you need to make sure you get a B or better.

"Yet to complete" is the key phrase here for "those courses". It's like another MCAT verbal passage!

I think you are right! 🙂

How come you applied at touro-ny? Don't you already have an acceptance at Lecom-E?

I would love to be in NYC vs. Erie for a few personal reasons. Touro-NY, for a newer school had a very impressive first class match list in terms of specializing IN the northeast. Board pass rate was 97% this past year too which is impressive.

The way I see it is it's an opportunity to see the program if I am granted an interview, just like college-searching. I like having options. I also think going to school and aiding in a mission to improve access to healthcare in a community like Harlem would be awesome.

But yes, I'm accepted to LECOM-E and am still in the cycle. I applied to 21 schools after all! I can definitely eliminate a handful after my acceptance.

Submitted my secondary! If its a guaranteed interview... I will def. try. Plus, I would love to go to med school in NYC, great opportunities there!

Keep in mind that any med student who works hard enough can pass boards. Your score is almost completely based on your own ability and not on the school you attend.

Exactly, which leads back to my point about preferring to be in NYC, especially if it will regionally help me be where I want for residency due to clinical connections. Seeing a school's curriculum in an interview setting, while having a conversation with real students (and not SDN), is therefore of the utmost importance to see to help you understand if you as a student could excel in that environment.

Additionally, it's also a testament to their selection process in being successful at choosing students who can succeed in their program, in such a way that will help them pass their board exams.

Hey how are you all doing? 😀
I see the thread had been little busy after that secondary invites on 30th.
I'm posting to see what people think about my situation here.
I also did get the secondary invite on 30th, but I already got an interview invite from Touro CA.
I'm actually a NY resident, and just because I lived in NY already, I want to try out the West Coast (at least that's my feeling when it comes to location only)
I realize that interview invites aren't guarantee for an acceptance but Touro CA might actually work out...
So I'm debating if $200 is worth it....

So I guess I'm asking what you guys/gals think about Touro CA and Touro NY in comparison to each other?

Oh, and congrats for those of you who got the invites 😀

For those of you who are always curious what people's stats are..
I'm a grad student so I don't know if my stats will be something that will be helpful.
If you are really curious, you can PM me, I'm more than happy to provide you with the information 🙂

Coughed a last $200 for ToruroCOM-NY and sent my secondary application today. I like NYC and probably will do just as great there (provided that I was admitted.) Let's see how time will show me. Waiting. 😎

I'm not as much worried about the $200 supplemental as much as the $2,000 deposit that they require within 2 weeks of your acceptance. I don't know if I can scrape that much together that fast... But hey I'm thinking a bit too far ahead huh.

I know, right. But, all schools request about this much (or half of it.).. I'm practically applying to schools that I'd like to attend, not to those that I'll turn down in a heart-beat if I'll have an acceptance given. As TouroCOM-NY, along with some other schools in the West from where I've already received interviews, are making my top school list.

I hope I'll receive all admissions around the same time period this year so as to be able to decide on one and close this app cycle early.

Does anyone know approximately how many interviews are given out and how many people get accepted in total?

Does anyone know if there is a place to check our application status? How long does it take them to process the secondaries?

On the first page of the application, it tells you to wait for 3 weeks and then you may contact Mr. Issa Snow.

Just received an email stating they have my secondary and check. Good luck everyone!

School sent an email that they received my secondary and application fee. Waiting for an interview from TouroCOM-NY.😎

Hi ,

this is probably a stupid question, but is the secondary submission electronic or by mail?also do they accept interfolio

Thank you and good luck
I did mine by mail, the Touro - Nevada one was by mail as well...check too, I got a receipt that they got my payment and application but the check has not cleared yet.

Does anyone know if they give out interviews on rolling basis or on a fixed date? I know almost all secondary invitations are given out on Aug 30th. Just wondering LOL.😕

I would imagine it would have to be on a rolling basis. There are people who have not submitted their primary still, much less everyone's secondary, so sending all invites out on one date would not make sense.

From my secondary-received email for your reference:

"Thank you for submitting your Supplemental Application and fee.

The Admissions Department will review your file in the order in which it has been received.

The Admissions Committee will make a collective decision to select candidates for interviews based upon the applicant with the strongest credentials."

May current TouroCOM-NY students give us the URL showing the list of current professors at the medical school?

Thanks for the info. LOL. I heard secondary = interview...dunno why they are still selecting candidates... I hope to hear back from them soon...My $200!!! $200!!!!!!!🙁🙁🙁

From what I gather from a few previous years' threads is that they used to have that wording (secondary = interview) and I'm sure some people wrote terrible essays, got denied, and complained. Or, in other situations, they sent emails asking "where is my $200 interview!?".

The way I'm looking at it is $200 isn't even one textbook next year and a worthy investment if I've come this far in the process. I also don't live more than 50 minutes outside NYC so that's also an added benefit when accounting for this potential interview cost. Would be disappointing to not get an interview after a $200 secondary though, so I hear ya!

EDIT: Also, if they are changing from the guaranteed interview system to the "lets get a bunch of $200 secondary payments to fund our admissions department" model that most schools have (albeit cheaper everywhere else) it will be quite the highway-robbery disappointment.

Yea, I heard they gave out about 800 secondaries, and only took about 130 ppl...I smell something fishy about this stats...LOL...Nevertheless, as a Canadian applicant, there are only a few schools to apply. I guess even if it's robbery, I would pay for it...*sad face*...dunno how long it's gonna take before they start sending out interviews...Good luck to us both!

ouch..honestly, with the vague answers they were given applicants calling about
secondary = interview, I had a feeling that there is no way they are going to give out interviews to every received secondary.
best of luck to you.:xf:

I don't believe there is a list out there of our professors, but the two most well-known that we have are Dr. Conrad Fisher (of Kaplan Physiology), and Dr. Jeffrey Gardere Clinical Psychologist (seen on various Maurry, and VH1-Daddy Camp- specials). Otherwise, the only public info is on www.touro.edu/med

TOURO-NY is my first choice. I have always wanted to live in the city, and I find it is the perfect opportunity.

My stats:
MCAT 27Q
cGPA 3.4
sGPA 3.25
Worked as a clinical research coordinator, and now consultant for investigators at MUSC (so, I'm a SC resident). Lots of patient experience and shadowing. Leadership opportunities in college (Editor-in-Chief) and volunteer experience at a free medical clinic.

I need feedback - what are my chances? I just submitted last week and waiting to be verified. Thanks!

For the essay, did everyone double space or no? I have one page single spaced, two double. This is the last thing im waiting to fix before mailing out my secondary, what do you guys think?

I have a little less than 2 pages single-spaced. They didn't specify, did they?

They did not specify; it is always safe to assume single-spaced (this is the norm in big-kid post-college world). I do not think you will be penalized for double-spaced; however, I don't know why you wouldn't want to capitalize on the ambiguity in their directions 😉

sounds good. did you just submit the primary or the secondary? if you mean the primary you might be tiny bit late in the season since DO schools do everything early.

i did 1.5 spaced full 2 pages

Can someone please tell me the prompt for the secondary?

Just submitted my secondary today! My stats are 26Q MCAT, 3.61 cGPA and 3.44sGPA, good LOR, work experience in lab, volunteer work, volunteer research, speak Russian(not really relevant but still haha). This is my #1 choice. Am I still in the running?

I guess if you are not in the game, you wouldn't get a secondary invitation! So you are better than you think. Now all we need to do is to pray this interview invite comes early and we don't actually wet our pants during the session.
