Touro COM - New York (TouroCOM-NY) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

MsBerry, I'm trying to do what you are doing with delta for both outbound and inbound.
Do you know if you cancel it and immediately buy it again, you will get the same price?

If you cancel it and immediately buy again, you have to purchase the ticket at its current price. For Southwest, it's better not to cancel the flight but rather to reschedule the flight by choosing a different date or time. Actually, it doesn't even have to be a different flight. In the past, I saw that the price went down, so I clicked "reschedule" and bought the ticket at a lower price. I didn't get a refund, but the difference of the 2 tickets was credited to my account for future use. There is no 24 hour cancellation policy with Southwest. If you missed your flight or cancel it, the amount you paid for the ticket will be credited to your account for 1 year. I forgot whether it's 1 year from when you bought it or from when the flight is, but I think it's the latter.

I just don't have Southwest where I am flying from... 🙁
So Delta is only the one I have, I'm just gonna hope that it doesn't get too expensive by the time they come back from their holidays and confirm my interview...

okay now Im pissed, according to the school calendar the school is only closed on October 1st and 2nd, so why didn't he respond to our frickin emails today!? The ticket prices jumped again today.

He was at the recruiting event yesterday. Settle down.

Hey everyone hoping for some answers.. I have yet to hear or receive an email from this school. I have a MCAT score coming in tuesday but had a previous one that I thought would at least get a secondary. I have a good gpa and solid ECs any reason for no word yet?

For those with IIs, would you mind sharing the date you got your complete email and stats? I was complete 9/11. Thanks so much!

Was complete 9/14

30S, 3.3S, 3.5C, 2500+ hours clinical volunteer work, 2 years research, 1 patent, master's degree

Good luck, hopefully you'll get an ii soon.

What's his excuse today?

@allicat99999:

I was complete 9/18 and was invited 9/27
I have a 3.4 gpa and 29 mcat

Why are you so antsy? I was complete 9/5 and didn't get an II yet. I have a 3.5 gpa and 31MCAT. Be patient.

Don't get me wrong, I am very grateful for the ii. However, I am upset because, as I mentioned a few posts ago, I need to buy my tickets to NYC and with less than two weeks until my potential interview date, most of the airline seats are gone and the prices are creeping higher everyday. I just think it was inconsiderate of him to send me (and a few other) and ii on a Thursday before taking a couple days off, then not even responding to our emails or returning our calls on Friday or when he got back today. Hopefully he responds to us later today, he is in the office because I called the office today and was told he is out to lunch. BTW Good luck to you, with your stats Im sure youll be getting an ii during the next round of invites!

Isn't it possible to just schedule a later interview date if you're worried about ticket costs? I know hes swamped because IIs went out prior to the long weekend for the holidays and his email-box probably got swamped the day he came back. Not to mention he was due for a recruitment event the day he got back (and subsequently probably got a ton of requests from that as well).

Thanks for the encouragement. You're already a step ahead of many others because you have an II. They're interviewing you this early because they're obviously interested in you. Just stay positive. I'm told that once we do enroll in medical school, we'll be paying out of our asses for random fees left and right. My current med school friends just look back and laugh about how they fussed over having to pay a couple hundred bucks extra during the interview process and how in the grand scheme of things, it was just pennies. Good luck with your interview.

just got the interview confirmation, but now i am not too sure if i wanna attend... i would hate to live in nyc and sleep in a space where i can't stand up straight... 🙁

why would their website say JFK airport is closer when LGA airport is closer....grrrrr

Hang in there everyone, I was complete 9/5 and still waiting for an ii -- Hoping for the next round of E-mails, as my MCAT was not the highest, but my GPA and experience are significant. Good luck, try not to lose too much sleep...

Thanks for the positive words! Now that I finally have everything confirmed I can calm down 🙂 I cannot interview on any of the later days this month (they only provided 3 options) so I could only interview on the 15th. Anyways, you bring up a great point about the cost being virtually nothing compared to what we will pay in the end! Anyways, I will be sure to report what I think of the school after the interview, in case my previous posts painted a bad image of the school! 'til next time, good luck! This time next year we will be in the grind of our first year of med school!

So I got my confirmation for the interview and it looks like it's going to be a panel interview.
Does anyone know if it's also going to be a group interview like Touro CA?

When do you guys think the next round of invites will go out?
I would assume after the Jewish holidays wrap up, so probably next week (this would be nice) but not sure, I'm just going off of the post that listed the dates last year, which seemed like weekly invites for 4 weeks and then another one a month later...anyone else have any other guesses?

What's a panel interview?

Trust me, where the school is you will find a decent apartment. Even if you head a little north of the school you will find cheaper places. But anywhere below, forget it.

Then don't take away the spots for those of us who would love to live in NYC!!!!!

The interview consists of yourself and 2 interviewers in a room. Depending on the pairing it can be "good cop-bad cop" or they'll work well together. Over the years it has gone back and forth between open file and closed file. In my case (2 years ago) one of my interviewers had read my file, while the other one hadn't. The rest of the days activities include financial aid counseling, a student-run tour of the school (we are all volunteers, and have no impact on if you get in or not, so tour time is time to chill out!), lunch, and then a presentation from Dr. Conrad Fischer (sometimes depending on his hospital schedule- he teaches physio) and our pre-clinical dean about the academics of Touro and how they test/score/rank us (heads up- we have tests only on mondays; no test=no class, we are graded based on the class 2 ahead of you so you're not directly competing with your classmates, and we're on a z-score system for test grading).

All in all, it runs from 8am~2pm or so. If you have any specific questions, PM me. Good luck!

Touro cashed my secondary check last night. This happen to anyone else?

Thanks for the info!! How do you like the school so far? Sorry if you've answered this somewhere else already.

Does anyone who is interviewing or who is familiar with the area have advice on a place to stay for the interview?

Yeah I need to know this too

Cheaper and decent like how? You mean bronx? Can you live in fort lee? I would love to be in nyc too but the thought of space makes me shutter

You can always stay at the hotels by La Guardia if you are flying in there and just take a taxi (~$25-30) or the bus. The only bad thing about taking a taxi or the bus is that travel time relies on traffic and I personally wouldn't take the risk of being late on an interview day. You could also stay anywhere in the city since the subway takes you right next to the school. Then again, hotels in the city are super pricey whereas staying by the airport would be cheaper.

the laguardia airport hotel is like 125 a night, and you can get the bus (m60) takes about 45 mins and costs 2.50 in change.

I live in Washington Heights which is a nice area and the rent is good compared to other places in the city. I met a couple current Touro students and most of them don't live in Harlem-they either live by me in Washington Heights, UWS, or even UES.

But whats the living condition like?

What do you mean by living condition? I guess it depends on how much you are willing to pay. The more you pay, the nicer/safer the area...

I mean don't get me wrong, Harlem isn't that bad of an area as people make it out to be. I've been there plenty of times and I have always felt safe. I have friends who live in Harlem and they have never complained. There are many places in NYC that are unsafe, including some areas of Harlem, and you just have to be smart about when/where you go...

Agreed. I live in Harem in a privately owned brownstone. I have a 2br, roughly 1200sq. ft. and we pay total 2350/mo. I have never felt unsafe here. There are about 25 students live in "Harlem", it's a huge area. You use the same street smarts here as you would anywhere else- i.e. don't walk down the creepy alleyway at 3am, and don't talk to weirdos.

I don/1 care about safety but the condition of those apartment

Washington heights a nice area? I mean it is A LOT safer then it used to be..but I wouldn't go so far as to call it nice.

OVERALL, NYC is a very safe city. The safest big city in America I believe. Harlem is NOT bad. But like with any city, if you walk around by yourself late at night..it isn't a good idea. I've lived here most of my life and have been in some bad parts at all hours of the night and never had a problem. Of course anything can happen at anytime. Yes, if you are used to living in a huge spacious place, you are def not going to have that. I have some friends with pretty small apartments but it is completely manageable and they still can have friends over and it's a comfortable fit. Living in a small place is 10000% worth it because you get to live here! Best place to live by a long shot..just sayin.
