Touro COM - New York (TouroCOM-NY) Discussion Thread 2013 - 2014

My interview was unimpressed cop /super nice cop. I also got straight accepted.

Can some people who were accepted post their stats and how they thought their interview went?

3.16 undergradGPA, 3.88 gradGPA 34 MCAT. I left the interview convinced that the interviewer disliked me, the other interviewer didn't say much, but she seemed nice. Accepted to Harlem campus, so I stopped trying to speculate on how things will turn out after I leave my interview. Prepare the best you can know your application, interview then breathe and forget about it! You have done all you can at that point. An email will arrive in your inbox soon enough.

WOW. Guess they won't be maintaining their 31 mcat avg for next fall.

I feel like there are more polite ways to convey your point than this.

Edit: when I interviewed, they said the average was 30 last year. An average is just that: an average. My score was a 33, someone else got a 34, so those right there pull it back up to 30ish. Applicants with lower than the average can and do gain admission, they just might need to show strength in other areas instead.

I was at an interview this week. They said less than a 1/3 at each campus.

Less than 1/3?!? That's nuts. I'd imagine they would be at least 50%.

There are 100 seats open at Harlem so you're looking at not even 33 spots filled and we are in Feb....

Out of 135 seats in Middletown not even 45 seats filled?

Is this a normal trend?

Aren't there 135 seats at Harlem too?

I didn't know there were only 100 seats. In that case a little under half the class is full than at harlem.

Does anyone know how full the class is so far?
I had an interview on 1/27 and they said about 70 seats were filled of the 135 so far. I'm not sure if that includes the seats reserved for masters or not. They also said that last year they accepted 200 something.

accepted to Middletown. sgpa 2.9, cgpa 3.2, postbac gpa 3.5. mcat 30- 11,8,11.
Good Luck to all!
Congrats! When did you interview? Was middletown your first choice or did you check off both campuses, and they just gave you Middletown?

Thanks. I interviewed Dec 4. Thought my interview went okay. Got wait-listed Dec. 26. Acceptance letter Jan 17. I checked both campuses but put middletown as my #1 choice. Sent in my payment earlier this week 🙂

I received a secondary a few weeks ago and I wasn't sure about this school yet. If I sent it in now, would it be worth the try?

Has anyone who has been accepted receive their medical record packet form email yet? The email sent last Monday mentioned it would go out this week.

Ok, good to hear it isn't just me. I switched my contact email last week so I want to make sure it wasn't a communication issue.

I'll try to remember to post once I receive it! I wouldn't be surprised if the storms we keep getting slammed with aren't messing things up a bit. I work about a mile from Touro and a lot of our staff have not been able to make it to work with all the snow and ice.

It is worth a try. They interview until May. It depends on your competitiveness relative to the rest of the applicants left.

Hey guys I'm a Floridian and locals or students want to help me out? I interview end of Feburary! Thank you!

Make sure you know your application really well

Awesome, thank you! And trust me I know all about the storms... I live in Boston and we are just had a nice accumulation of snowfall today with a pending storm coming in the next week or so. Gotta love that northeast winter, I just need to escape to Vermont to get some snowboarding in.

Yikes! Yea you guys have been getting hit hard up there! Stay safe! And hopefully you can get a chance to play in the snow a bit too!

That doesn't look like fun at all!! Yuck! Stay safe guys!!
In all seriousness, you can do a quick search of this thread and find tons of useful tips on how to prepare for the interview/types of questions to expect/etc. Best of luck!

I didn't mean questions, I meant travel where to stay, how to get there

I would probably try and stay in a hotel as close to Touro as possibly so you dont have to worry about transportation the morning of. If you stay at a hotel on the upper west side (its a nice area) and you can take the 2 or 3 express train straight to Touro and it takes about 15 minutes. Here's a hotel right by the subway (about 90$) http://www.thehotelnewton.com. Where to stay really depends on your price range.

I stayed at Newton as well. If you fly to La Guardia, you can take the M60 bus (which travels right through Harlem) and get to Broadway street for $2.50.

Ohh yeah, the best part is the slush that accumulates between the sidewalk and street so you step into 5 inch deep puddles of snow/salt/water mixture. It's been boot weather for awhile now. I'm going to VT soon though, my brother lives in Burlington so I'm absolutely going to get some snowboarding in at Stowe and Sugarbush in a few weeks.

Accepted to Harlem Campus!!!! 3.2, 31. Interviewed 2/5.

Congratulations to everyone else who got accepted!!

For those who are interviewing in the coming weeks/months, hope this reflection on my interview helps. The interviewers were nice and very laid back. It was more along the line of a half hour "conversation" that revolved around the questions" why medicine, why DO and why Harlem". Halfway through my interview, I was randomly asked to describe one instance in life that "told you medicine was for you." Also, my panel did not ask me a single thing about my research, publications or grades, although that was not the same case for everyone else who interviewed with me. Be prepared for some hardball ethical questions such as "what would you do if you saw someone cheating?". There are no "right" answers - just be honest and genuine about what you say. Although a very laid back interview, I felt that they were avoiding my strong suits and were more interested in seeing how I reacted to "sensitive" situations and questions.

You guys will do GREAT!! PM me if any of you have any specific questions. I won't wish you luck cause you got this!

Was there any denials!? So I'm concerned with coming for my interview ! My Mcat is 28 GPS average but I thought if never get an II! But what are my chances of really getting in? I have awesome EC lots of research originally from NY!

I am curious, does anyone have the Interview to acceptance offers stats for this school. I know some schools let you know the number of interviews they give out on average and the number of students offered admission. Does anyone have this info for TOURO-NY? I can't find it.

If you got an II that means they like what they see on paper and THEY WANT TO ACCEPT YOU! I interviewed 2/3, was accepted Thursday eve to M-Town (was my first choice) with MCAT 29, 3.4 overall, 3.8 postbacc sci prereqs. I confirm what everyone else is saying, very friendly/conversational interview focused on Tell me about yourself, Why Osteo/Touro, asked about research/volunteering, then one stressor--was more of a statement than a question--I was told "You know, you will not have time for your family if we accept you. You better forget about them, because you don't realize what a committment medSchool is...etc". I held firm and let them respectfully know that I'm aware of the work ahead of me, and my family only bolsters me in all I do...(I somewhat expected this as I'm a non-trad with lots going on beside school, and I mentioned my fam in app package). If you got an II, all you have to do--and I'm not implying that this is easy when so much is on the line--is BE YOURSELF (assuming that you really have thought this out and becoming physician is the only option for you). Rehearse snippets of your answers until they sound natural. And when you're there, remember to smile and breathe! 'cuz they really do want you...
