Touro COM - New York (TouroCOM-NY) Discussion Thread 2013 - 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Accepted to Harlem Campus!!!! 3.2, 31. Interviewed 2/5.

Congratulations to everyone else who got accepted!!

For those who are interviewing in the coming weeks/months, hope this reflection on my interview helps. The interviewers were nice and very laid back. It was more along the line of a half hour "conversation" that revolved around the questions" why medicine, why DO and why Harlem". Halfway through my interview, I was randomly asked to describe one instance in life that "told you medicine was for you." Also, my panel did not ask me a single thing about my research, publications or grades, although that was not the same case for everyone else who interviewed with me. Be prepared for some hardball ethical questions such as "what would you do if you saw someone cheating?". There are no "right" answers - just be honest and genuine about what you say. Although a very laid back interview, I felt that they were avoiding my strong suits and were more interested in seeing how I reacted to "sensitive" situations and questions.

You guys will do GREAT!! PM me if any of you have any specific questions. I won't wish you luck cause you got this!
Congratulations to you.

Wait-listed and not very happy about it

Interviewed end of January

Did you apply to both campuses?

Did anyone with an MCAT less than 28 get an interview invite? All the invites I've seen are more MCAT heavy with most people in the 30's.

accepted to Harlem!

3.2 c/3.0 s/ 30

interviewed 2/3 and heard the good news the following Thursday also =)

Could you guys tell me a little difference between Harlem/ Middletown campus

Could you guys tell me a little difference between Harlem/ Middletown campus

I was accepted to the Harlem campus, and I don't know a ton about Middletown... That being said, the main major difference is Harlem is very urban where Middletown is quite rural. Both campuses focus on providing medical care to underserved populations, just different populations. Harlem campus is dedicated to providing medical care to the underserved communities of Harlem, where Middletown seems more rural medicine oriented.

As for rotation sites, Harlem campus has rotations in NJ, Staten Island, and some in Pennsylvania if I remember correctly. I also hear Harlem campus is fighting to get some rotations set up in Manhattan itself. Middletown campus has a hospital in Orange county (Orange regional medical center) that students do most of their rotations at, I believe there are other sites, but again I didn't apply to Middletown I was focused on Harlem; I want to practice urban medicine.

I don't know if the basic medical curriculum is different between the two campuses, and honestly I am a bit unsure of how the curriculum at the Harlem campus is set up (Systems based or traditional curriculum). I do know there is iTunes U that has all the lectures so you can watch them online it is my impression that these iTunes lectures are the only true lectures, then there are pseudo-PBL clicker sessions with faculty which seem awesome. Aside from the clicker sessions and iTunes there are OMM labs and Anatomy labs. (If anyone knows the curriculum better than I do please let me know I am curious myself I know @DrEnderW is a current student at the Harlem campus, hopefully he/she can comment more?).

Hey all,

I'm in a bit of a predicament and was hoping someone could help, especially since some of you may have done relevant research already.

I was accepted to Touro Harlem about a month and a half ago, but was recently accepted to NYCOM as well. I am trying to debate between which of the two I would like to attend, and was wondering if anyone has any opinions? I have to pay NYCOM $1500 by this Friday to reserve my spot.

So far I've come up with the following list of pros for each:

NYCOM - Traditional lectures, nice campus (con: curriculum is not finalized)
TOURO - Better location (I live in NYC about 15 min away now), slightly cheaper, more selective?

I really am having trouble with this. I would especially appreciate any info regarding clinical rotations in 3rd and 4th year. I know that a lot of Touro's are in NJ, Staten Island, etc., but don't know much more.

Thanks a lot, and best of luck to those waiting to hear back or interviewing soon. My interview wasn't too bad. Just have good reasons for why you want to go to that school, why DO, and why Harlem, and you'll be fine.

I interviewed there last week and from the tour guide and information session: Touro is looking for students who want to do research. They are a newer school and also are in competition for residencies in the area with a lot of MD programs, so they are trying to establish themselves with publications.

Met the head of research and he basically said if you have a good idea, you will not have a problem with money at the school.

Anyone else trying to decide between RowanSOM and Tour-NY (Harlem)?

I read through the other forum posting comparing the two schools. Just thought I would ask people who are interested in this school specifically, not just those looking at numbers.

Hey, during the interview we were told that the school is "flushed with cash" and strongly encourages students to conduct research. They are really focused on establishing themselves as a top medical school and believe that research is one of those factors that will really set them apart from the rest. So yes, BIG on research.

Has anyone here sent an update letter pre-interview hold? If so, does it just go to Sean?

I sent all my update letters to [email protected]. But they do not respond back with confirmation that they received it. I think Mr. Ruiz said if you email them anything, it goes to your folder.

Is anyone interviewing on the 26 want to split a hotel? Or is any current student willing to host? I have broke my bank and need to try to save every dollar! Thanks in advance!

I was recently able to get a DO letter of recommendation. Do you think I can send it in to add into my file?

I have the option to fly into Newark, JFK or lga any recommendations on which one is easier!?

Yes, and I would encourage it. I was told by the director of admissions that anything you send in will be added your file.

I got accepted to the Middletown campus (I put both down but with Harlem as my first choice, just to be safe) but I really want to go to the Harlem campus. Is there any possibility that they'd let me switch to Harlem?

Ellekay324-- I think I interviewed with you-- 1/27? Congrats on the acceptance!

I spoke to Sean about this at the interview day. He basically told me that if you weren't accepted to your top choice, they would offer you an acceptance at the other campus instead of waitlisting/denying you. Also, that there was a slim possibility of switching campuses, but you had to go through an appeals process or something.

How does one go through this appeals process?

I'm not too sure on the details. I would check with Sean to find out more info. He made it sound like it was a rare occurrence, but still a chance of it happening...

Wanted to get your guys' opinion on this: I received the Touro secondary in the beginning of November, but under some financial circumstances I haven't been able to submit it since it's a $200 secondary. I now able to submit it, but it's 3 months after receiving the secondary. Do you guys think admissions will see this as a negative thing and think I'm not interested? Reason I ask is because I would really prefer not to spend the $200 if I don't have the slightest chance of getting an interview. Thanks for your input!

For what its worth, a secondary at this school appears to correlate highly for an interview. But half way through Feb? Not so sure..

To those who interviewed, which hotel did you stay in? Reviews? Thanks.

I stayed at Holiday Inn LaGuardia, but I wouldn't recommend it. There was a roach in the wastebasket in the bathroom, and it literally freaked me out in the morning and made me terrified to shower. There was no breakfast in the morning. It has a free shuttle to and from the airport though.

For what it's worth to those of you who have been asking what Middletown is like---I live an hour north of the M-town campus and will be part of the inaugural class, commuter. I'm not super familiar with M-town, but I recently spent a day there and here are my gross generalizations/first impressions regarding the lay of the land:

The city is quite spread out. The part of town that seems busiest is near hwy 17 & 87, comprised of large/new shopping malls, home depot, sam's club, and all the other corporate franchises. This is where all the rural people to the North and West come to do their shopping. Numerous smaller strip malls line rt. 211/Wickham Ave as you head toward "old town"/what I'd call "downtown". Many (30%?) of the stores/diners along that road are out of business. This whole area definitely has a suburban sprawl feel to it, ie you want a car to get around. Any public transport would consist of buses/taxis (and I don't know anything about that). The downtown area struck me as economically depressed as compared to nearby downtowns that are closer to the Hudson, but it I'd say it's thriving compared to the more rural towns to the North and West. About half the storefronts were vacant (of course it depends upon which street you're on), and many ethnic restaurants (including lots of Mexican and Chinese) and NYC style "corner delis" set it apart from less diverse areas to the north. There are some seemingly nice cafe's, pubs, restaurants. Also some that seem not-so-nice. I've only driven through this area once, so I have no idea what the local economic development trend is, but nearby cities like Kingston/Poughkeepsie/Beacon have downtowns that are definitely on the upswing over the last decade, and Newburgh too seems to be following this trend. It's very possible that Middletown is on the upswing as well--Can anyone chime in on this?

I heard in Touro's promotional video that M-town has an award-winning trails/parks system but I saw no evidence of that. 30 min to the north, however, begins the Shawangunk Ridge, an amazingly unique and well-preserved/protected ecosystem with tons of hiking/biking/rock climbing. To the northwest/west are lots of lakes but I think most of them have limited public access (lots of NYC folks with vacation homes). As you leave M-town it gets very rural very quickly (at least as you go North/West, my stomping grounds). All in all, M-town could be a great place for medical students, especially if you are truly interested in rural medicine. I'd say this is as rural as it gets while still having enough population & healthcare infrastructure needed for our training. All the culture of NYC is only ~1.5 hrs away, but do not expect M-town to be anything like NYC.

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I'm looking for an apartment-mate for the upcoming academic year. I'm 21 and female, from California - will be completely new to NYC. Please private-message me if you're interested.

How does one go through this appeals process?

Yeah, 1/27! I talked to Sean and he said he'd send me a form to fill out and they'd review it and either accept or reject my appeal. Did you get accepted/did you decide to go here?

Question for anyone accepted: I know that the return date for medical forms is February 28, but does anyone else think that is not possible? To get all of the titers finished in 2 weeks and have them sent?

Yeah... that was my thought too I asked for an extension because I am about 600 miles from my PCP and I am way too busy to get back there in February. I had my PCP's office fax me my immunization records then went to an urgent care facility and had a doctor there fill everything out. I just put my forms in the mail so hopefully when they get them they are satisfied with it, because I asked for an extension which they replied is only until March 6th and a one week extension does not help at all...

I just sent them a copy of my immunization record and my PPD form from October. Hopefully that is good enough, I guess I'll find out in a few days when they get my forms.

I've been accepted to my top choice, so I'll be matriculating there. It would have been fun living in NYC though! What about you?

Is that the return date for everyone? I never even got anything about medical forms from them... or do they send more information once they get your $2000 deposit?

Congrats!! I really liked tourocom so I'm pretty sure I'm going to go there... I just hope they let me switch to the Harlem campus!

If I have the 730--130 time would a flight out of lga at 3:30 be ok?
