Touro COM - New York (TouroCOM-NY) Discussion Thread 2013 - 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
got the app complete email and that my app is currently under review. crossing my fingers tightly. anyone know if tour ny screened hard like they did in previous years?

Did you send your LORs through Interfolio?

I'm actually not sure how they screen. I just read from multiple threads that they screen hard and that a secondary is indicative of an ii. Hopefully thats the same as this year? But its application procedure could totally change with the addition of the Middletown campus

Just called them.

If your secondary was sent in, you should have received an email.

He said he is now confirming the letters. He is starting with interfolio, then virtualevals.

His goal is to try to finish in the next couple weeks, but he said there are some jewish holidays so they have a few half days so it might take a bit longer.

Just a heads up/fyi

So these "complete" emails only indicate that the secondary application was received? That's odd. I haven't received one, but I know for a fact that my secondary was delivered last week. 😕

I guess it depends on how you sent them. I sent them via priority mail so I knew it arrived by Saturday. And they sent me an email today. Assuming they do not work on Saturday, it took the 1-2 days to verify I turned in my secondary application.

Just call, he was very nice and it took 5 seconds for him to look up my application status.

Got an email saying they are closed for the rest of the week and only open Mon/Tue of next week due to the holidays.

Wowzers. That's some legit time off this Sept. lucky staff members!! 👍

does it mean medical students will have no class during the jewish holiday?

Are you supposed to mail your transcripts attached to your secondary application (as in, inside the same envelope as your completed secondary), or should it be sent directly from the Registrar's Office (but in that case, it wouldn't be in the same envelope as your completed secondary)?

The reason why I'm asking is because most services requesting transcripts (like AACOMAS) disregard transcripts that "[are] not sent directly from the “Registrar’s Office” but mailed by you, including sealed transcripts". But if I were to send my transcript in the same envelope as my completed secondary (which makes some sense to me, since all my files would be packaged together nicely in a single delivery), then it obviously wouldn't be sent directly from the "Registrar's Office" - instead, it would be, as AACOMAS puts it, "mailed by me" (just like the rest of my secondary materials).

Any thoughts? What have other people been doing?

Thanks in advance!

I requested the Registrar's Office to send them in. The email didn't specify whether it should be sent with the supplemental application, so I think it would be safer to have the Registrar's Office send them.

Correct me if I'm wrong but Touro NY does not consider the verbal score? I recall reading that somewhere.
Here's the thing with the verbal scores.

You can definitely get an interview invite with a poor verbal score (as long as your bio is 10 and above). By poor, I'm referring to a verbal of 6~8.

Candidates with poor verbal score should take the interview seriously and get accepted in one shot (without getting waitlisted).

I'm saying this because once you are waitlisted, verbal scores suddenly become critical in getting pulled off that waitlist. Touro looks at the total MCAT score and automatically rejects anyone below 29. People with 30+ tends to get pulled off, and it'd be tough meeting that criteria without performing decently in the verbal section.

This is somewhat accurate if we were talking about the Touro from 2012 and before. This year, there is a new director with new staff who have changed things around, so they would be picking interviews/waitlist candidates somewhat differently.

I know this because 3 people who applied last year who were rejected post-interview/waitlist, didn't even get a secondary this time around.

I had a poor VS 6-8. But a stronger BS 10-12, got secondary invite. Basically what you are saying is that if I make ii I HAVE to nail it, otherwise is pretty much a rejection?

"Your item was forwarded to a different address at 11:00 am on September 17, 2013 in Brooklyn, NY."
Damn it. USPS lost my application. Anyone know what I can do? I went to the Post Office and called the -800 number. They were not helpful and just told me to wait.
Is it a good idea to mail the school another application form? Or should I just give USPS another couple days to track my letter?

i think they will correct the mistake fast since, obviously, they caught it. Otherwise you would not have received the email. Keep a close eye on it. Touro is closed on Friday btw

Dude I have a 6 in verbal and still got a secondary.. (12/12/6) if you're curious. Touro and most schools I imagine place more emphasis on the science scores

+1

I also got a secondary with a 6 on verbal.

I received a secondary as well with a 6VR. I'm not sure whether I have a decent shot though for this school. Stats c.gpa 3.47 s.gpa 3.72 but mcat 24 (6vr8ps10bs). Luckily I did fairly well on BS which i know Touro likes and my s.gpa is pretty good. Just feel like my mcat can turn me away, thoughts?

Did you guys send your transcripts directly to TCOM-NY from your school? or must this only be done if accepted?

Someone said that he/she called and Touro suggested that they send transcripts for your application, however, it wasn't necessary.

I did, since it was pretty easy for me to request and send to Touro

Interview invite today!!!! Scheduling it for end of october cuz i got 2 more invites coming up.

I was complete one of the first days. Hope I wasn't left out of the party, this would be a great school to get an iii at

Yes. It gives you some time to catch up or study for upcoming exams. It surely does not feel like time off as you just study all day at home instead of on campus.

Is this what everyone is referring to as the "complete" email, or do you get another one once they have your letters with your file?

"Thank you for submitting your Supplemental Application.

The Admissions Department will review your file in the order in which it has been received. Your payment will be processed by the Bursar's office. Once your Letters of Recommendation are received, your application package will be forwarded to the Admissions Committee.

The Admissions Committee will make a collective decision to select candidates for interviews based upon each applicant's credentials."

I believe that this is the complete email. I don't think they send another one after the LORs are received (if they haven't been already). I just received this email today and my LORs are in.

Okay, me too. Thanks!

Hey guys, I know Touro started sending secondaries pretty late. I just had my primary verified a few days ago. Any idea when I should expect a secondary?

Is it true that tourocom-New York is adding another 100+ seats this year?

How did you guys/gals manage to print this form AND make it show all the text entered in some of these :"explain..." type of questions??
We do have to mail the secondary in, right?

Printed and filled in ones that isn't completed

Do you know when the expected interviews will be haha?
No, all the admissions assistant said is that they will be printing out Interfolio/VirtualEvals letters A-Z this week and attach them to applications. He also said to beat the crap out of anyone spreading rumors on SDN about interview invites being sent out hahah

So I get that the Interfolio and VirtualEval LOR are being downloaded now, but what about letters that were sent in by mail? Will they be considered last after the others are downloaded?

Ah, I had the same problem! I had to greatly reduce the length of my "academic gap" response. Also for the Letter Writers section, I left it blank then hand-wrote them in small print..but there's probably a better way.

Is anyone considering NOT submitting their secondary? After submitting all my other secondaries i'm afraid i'll be digging into my interview funds..

Does anyone know how long it takes them to charge you for the 200$ fee?

I'm astounded at how so many people stress over $200 secondary fee every year. I'm aware it's more than what the other schools charge, but now isn't the right time to be indecisive over $100 vs $200 and be like "oh Lord...should I apply or not??" Ya'll need to look at the bigger picture and realize this has to do with being a doctor or not. Once med school kicks in, you are talking ~ $40,000+ every year for tuition only...so the secondary fee shouldn't be a primary concern in the grand scheme of things.
