Touro COM - New York (TouroCOM-NY) Discussion Thread 2013 - 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm astounded at how so many people stress over $200 secondary fee every year. I'm aware it's more than what the other schools charge, but now isn't the right time to be indecisive over $100 vs $200 and be like "oh Lord...should I apply or not??" Ya'll need to look at the bigger picture and realize this has to do with being a doctor or not. Once med school kicks in, you are talking ~ $40,000+ every year for tuition only...so the secondary fee shouldn't be a primary concern in the grand scheme of things.

I think you should be a bit more empathetic. You are just assuming people are being cheap. But for some, a $100 makes a large difference. Another difference between now and tuition is that you qualify for loans, and federal/state loans.

Applications on the other hand is straight from your own pocket or those who qualify for fee waivers.

I am just stating don't be so quick to judge. There are people out there applying while trying to put food on the table for their siblings, children, etc. Maybe applying to one less school means one more week of stability.

Well said.

Did anyone get a complete email recently? If so, when did you mail in your application?

haven't gotten one, haven't even had my 200$ fee charged yet and my secondary should have gotten there last saturday. Have you been charged the fee? If so, how long did it take them to get around doing it. Maybe because of the holidays they haven't had time...

I guess mine was delivered last week. I didn't receive a complete email, either.

Did anyone say yes to the following question? I wonder if its a trap of sorts...

"Should you not be accepted into the Osteopathic Medicine Program, do you wish to be considered for the following:

MS Program in Interdisciplinary Sciences

There are no traps. Just tell the truth. Fr example, I would def not consider the masters program. Nothing against the program at all, I just would not want to be tied to any other type of program in this process nor bank on just one school.

Has anyone visited the campus before? What do you guys think of the facilities and location?

I haven't, but some searching on the forums will find you answers from people who have. I believe last year's TouroNY thread and the DO school pros/cons thread discuss it.

I have yet to receive a secondary from this school. Anybody that was verified around mid-september or later get a secondary yet?

I'm losing my mind. Should I call the school to see if I received an interview/status of my app?

Relax. I don't believe that they've even started sending IIs yet. With all of the Jewish holidays last month, they probably haven't had much time to thoroughly process the completed secondaries.

They began reviewing applications yesterday and will supposedly begin sending out II's this week.

Just received an interview invitation. In the city and a easy train ride to the school!

Those with interview invites can u post when u were complete and stats?

ii !!! I was complete 9/17. Is anyone doing Oct 21 at 12:45PM? Figured I could catch dinner/drinks in the city after the interview since Im already taking off a day from work

I got the invitation through email. My gpa is more than 3.5, complete on 9/18, non-science major, native New Yorker and MCAT is a 29.

I have a 3.89 and a 32 MCAT (12-8-12) and I got my interview invite fast.

I think they are sending it out from top ranks first. I don't think its equally mixed.

Do we have to manually update our new MCAT score? My new MCAT score came in after I submitted AACOM. I'm not sure if the schools have received my new MCAT scores but I just got secondary from this school.

Hey so I sent an email yesterday confirming an interview time. Has anyone sent an email and received a confirmation yet?

Interview invite last night. IS 3.6c 3.75s 31, non-trad. Chose Oct. 21st interview.

wrong, I am OOS and selected their very first interview time slot. Besides, if you read they don't give any state preference.

What's gonna happen to the rest of us average/underdog applicants?

I assume we just wait...is this season going more slowly than last year? I know i dont have great stats (3.47 gpa 3.72 sgpa 24 mcat) but I thought I'd get a little more lovin by now

Yeah they started this cycle about 4 weeks late compared to last year.

Did you get any love from NYCOM or anywhere else?

Good to know. I didn't submit my 2ndary to NYCOM, I kinda figured its a long shot for me. I'm complete at ACOM, MUCOM, both PCOM, both Western's, ATSOMA, NOVA (submitted 2ndary before I got my MCAT...mistake)
I'm hoping to receive 2ndary's from KCUMB and WCU but it seems unlikely by now. But on the bright side I did get an ii from pnwu which is surprising since Im not from their regional preference. How about you?

interview scheduled for Oct 21st session #1

gpa 3.8 and 25 MCAT (7/8/10)

Excited to check out the school. Anyone have advice on where to stay?

So uh... how long did it take them to charge your visa the $200 after the complete e-mail? Been awhile for me and still nothing.

Just got a secondary. What's with NY and wanting photos? lol. Anyway, I'm going to apply to the Middletown Campus.

For those that received interviews, did y'all submit transcripts to the school prior to receiving the invite?

People are saying that it's not necessary. Some applicant have sent them and others have not. OP somewhere here mentioned he called admissions and they said they just needed them before matriculation, when accepted.

Congrats! Middletown was my preference as well.

Bleh, I submitted secondary when it first came out. Pulling for an interview. Is the first batch of ii over?

is it still automatic interview invite if secondary submit?

according the AACOM description, it seems so.. but I don't think its 100% guaranteed these days. good luck.

Anyone else interviewing Oct. 21 at 12:45pm?

where do you see that its guaranteed?

That seems pretty ridiculous if everyone gets an ii if they received a 2ndary. I don't think they screen that hardcore for who they hand out 2ndaries to? Hopefully that's the case or otherwise attending the interview doesn't say much about your chances if they interview far more applicants than necessary

I think, supposedly, they screen heavier for secondaries. Hence, taking more time to get them out and the high secondary cost. I have no idea if that's true though, but SDN as a whole seems to think that.

Last year there were around 6-7k applicants for primary app. Out of that a couple thousand offered secondaries. Not sure how many were invited for interview but it was definitely less than half of those who received secondaries. Receiving secondary absolutely does not mean interview invite. Nor does interview invite mean an acceptance.

It seems to be completely different every year though considering it is a brand new school. It will prob vary even more considering they have 2 campuses now and a bunch more spots to fill.

Does anyone know if they accept additional letters of recommendation beyond the three required science/ D.O. letters?
