Sitting in my hotel going over notes and thinking about how fortunate I am to have earned an interview at such an incredible school. Literally, eveyone I know from home speaks of Touro NV like it is the best possible option for medical school. If my expectations prove to be true tomorrow, then this school might just become my new home.

I just wish I had enough time to go to the Luxor to check out the Human body exhibit before my flight. With a little help from the big man upstairs, maybe next time.

Not particularly. I was ill prepared for some very predictable questions. Although I had answers for these, the style of interview put me on edge, and my nerves caused me to betray/forget these ideas and thoughts. Had I spent more time prior to the interview formulating some outlines of responses, I would have been much better off. I also don't really think the school was the best fit for me. Perhaps they could sense that as well.

GPA: 3.4 overall, 3.3 science
MCAT: 27(P7, B11, V9)
BS in Exercise Science, MS in Kinesiology

I am from Vegas and this school has been always been near the top of my list of schools since I decided to pursue med school. What really impressed me with this school, besides the location, is the support it gives its students particularly through their OASIS program. If for whatever reason you are struggling, you are provided with an entire committee to address and help you overcome your weak areas. I especially like how that as a student you can be employed by the school to tutor fellow classmates, this a great opportunity to not only strengthen your entire graduating class but also to shore up your knowledge base come USMLE and COMLEX exams. Vegas and Nevada in general are very underserved when it comes to primary care, this school has and will continue to play an important role in addressing this need.
Vegas, in my biased opinion, is an overall great place to live- there is an abundant night life if you're into that, Red Rock and Lake Mead are good respites for the outdoorsy types(Zion is also a short drive away as well), living costs are relatively cheap, has some of the best restaurants/entertainment in the country for when you need a break from studying, everything(stores, homes, parks, etc.) is relatively new.
 
wait listed from 11/3 pretty bummed this was my top choice!

I don't know if they mentioned this during the interview day, but in addition to OASIS and SPC (which is the committee that meets with you if you are having troubles with exams), the students who fail more than one subject in a unit exam are assigned faculty advisers. You can also request one if you are doing well in classes. So pretty much anyone can have a faculty adviser hahaha it's cool if you get one that does research, then you might be able to get into their research!!

Interviewed 10/6, notified of being put on the waitlist yesterday. I'm relieved that I still have a chance!! =)

Does anyone know how the waitlist movement is? And, do they tell you how far up you are?

Sure! 3.45 cGPA, 3.35 sGPA, 3.9 grad GPA (MS in global health). MCAT of 26. Lots of ECs and some very unique activities as well as a lot of leadership roles. My numbers definitely didn't get me in, I believe it was my experiences and my interview which focused a lot on public health issues as well as some deficiencies/gaps in my application which gave me the opportunity to explain in a positive light.

Truthfully, the actual physical aspects of the school & location itself isn't that exciting. However, that being said, the school is great in terms of education, has great passing rates & residency placements, and many opportunities for research and student involvement. Being an underserved area, they also do a lot of community medical work which is very exciting. As one of two medical schools in the entire state, competing for rotations and what not won't be an issue. The faculty and staff were very warm and friendly which was a nice added touch. I am still waiting to hear back from a couple schools, but I would be very happy if I ended up here. 🙂

Someone correct me if I am wrong.
From the student catalog, http://tun.touro.edu/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/TouroUniversityNevada2014-2015Catalog.pdf,
page 43 states that
"That if a student cancels his enrollment before the start of the training program, Touro University Nevada shall refund to the student all the money he has paid, minus 10 percent of the tuition agreed upon in the enrollment agreement or $100, whichever is less."
Which means they will refund $1900 of the $2000, which is accordant with a previous thread from 2008, http://forums.studentdoctor.net/threads/highway-robbery-at-touro-nyc.564758/

submitted my deposit, I will do a Touro DO 19 🙂 unfortunately I am 6 credits deficient in behavioral science so I need to enroll in some online courses, I have heard good and bad things about BYU online, thoughts?

You could always do SLCC. If anything it's cheap.
 
I will check it out, just fyi I'm not from utah, I just know BYU has an extensive online offering of courses, so it doesnt NEED to be in utah.
 
How long did it usually take after an interview did you guys find out their decision?
 
2 questions:
1. I can't remember of the insurance they list on the budget worksheet is school insurance that you have to purchase or if it's just an estimate of what should plan on spending when you fine your own insurance?

2. iPads seemed to be an integral part of life at some other schools I looked at, and I know iPad minis fit in white coat pockets which seems super convenient. Any thoughts on whether an iPad mini would be a good investment, or do we have to do everything on the required laptops?

The insurance quoted should be the insurance they provide for you. I'm sure you could find a cheaper one ( I was just too lazy haha) but from what I hear, the insurance they give us is pretty good. Although it doesn't cover dental.

I got an iPad mini before school started and I use it to watch Netflix while I'm laying in bed. So not completely necessary yet, but maybe more useful during rotations. I mostly use the laptop they make us buy. Some people use tablets to take notes though because we have lots of powerpoint presentations.

So you can chose to get different insurance if you want to?
 
Will touro explicitly tell us what courses/credits we are missing for matriculation? Or is that something we have to figure out ourselves?

Download your primary application on AACOMAS for TUNCOM. It should tell you which ones you are missing (if any).
 
How did you guys schedule an interview? I called the number provided and they haven't picked up or returned my calls... Been trying since last week.

Hm when I called, she answered right away. This was Thursday last week

Interviewing here soon, already have 4 acceptances and will be depositing money for KCUMB on Dec 15 but I am still doing the interview because Nevada is much closer to home. I was really excited about the school until I talked with an MS2 who said that there is excessive cheating at this school. ie. students have been known to move pins during anatomy test, apparently the faculty knows that this happens but they don't really care..... I will say that the student made it sound like it was more than a one time issue but I don't really know how credible he is. Anyone know anything about this? Not trying to provoke anything just trying to figure it all out.

...lol what? No, this is not a 'thing' that happens here.

First of all, it would be really stupid to move pins during a practical because everyone after you would have a wrong answer so obviously they would know who moved the pin. Second of all, I haven't met too many "gunner" types here and I'm sure the ones who are that type wouldn't stoop that low. Third of all, if something like that happened I'm positive the faculty would care.

I don't know where your source is getting that crap hahahaha actually, it seems like the second years did really well on practicals (4 people got 100% on the first one!)

No, this is not too late. I think the interview cycle ends around late April/May...but not 100% on this. I can name several classmates who interviewed later in the cycle (January-April). I think there's a higher probability of waitlisting, but there's a lot of movement of the waitlist.

I am an OMS II here and I have never encountered any cheating. If you damage a structure or move a pin the student gets docked points on a practical. They take pictures of all the structure before the exam and its pretty easy to tell when someone changed it as everyone after that station will have a different answer than the ones before it. They also have the room under video camera surveillance. We did have a student replace a pin after it fell out and not notify the instructors on one anatomy practical but the instructors did resolve the matter. Not sure why that MSII said it was cheating maybe they misunderstood what happened. Other than practicals all our other exams are on laptops with a lockout browser we are spaced out making cheating impossible. I must say they take cheating seriously here.

Thanks for clearing that up. Like I said, I don't know the source well enough to know how serious to take him. I'm really hoping I like the school because my wife would rather move to Henderson than Kansas City. Thanks for the info I really appreciate it.

Was supposed to get notified 12/3... Guess they were excited to reject me!
