i have some important questions about ucla. does everyone have to go to the foundations week in august? when is the white coat ceremony? besides doing fafsa right now, what else is there to do for fin aid? how about parking? does the new curricu have early (how early and what kind, if yes) clinical? how much of the 4th year is electives (cause ive heard that almost all of the 4th year you can go out of ucla)? have you heard about the selective requirements or the med stu research thesis program?...what other kinds of opportunities or unique things are there? i just cant seem to find much info about the curriculum, the requirements, the opps, etc etc.

thanks.

well i had seen that ws before. most of things have not been updated unfortunately. its like 2-3 years old.

but i did find out from the site that the white coat ceremony is at the end of foundations week.

In fact, both the interviewer and I were exasperated after our debate. So, I think I'll have to look somewhere else!

What about you? What's are you considering at this moment?

Thanks for the encouragement, though.

congrats on ucla!!!

Hi Trojan2004,

Congrats for the acceptance.

What is the Foundations Week? Is that the same as the orientation week of 8/2 - 8/6? As for the White Coat Ceremony, I think the parents are invited to attend. Most of parents would like to attend.(My parents are dying to be there!)

You seems you are way ahead as far as getting the details of everthing.... We may be classmates soon...

yeah, its that orientation week. the last day i believe is the white coat ceremony. 8/2-8/6. there are just a lot of questions i have about the curric for all 4 years and its very hard to find out; i guess i can just call stu aff or curric and ask. maybe ill do that...

legend, are you set on ucla? maybe we'll be classmates! 🙂

Hi Trojan,

UCLA is high on my list at this point. It may be hard for me to pass UCSF if I get accepted. I think I will come to LA over Columbia(the news will arrive soon I heard !). I live in the Bay Area all my life, may be it is time for a change.

Yeap the new curric sounds very interesting. UCSF has that in place a few years ago and the students love it. Lots of people will come to UCLA to enjoy the sunny S. Cal, it is so tempting.... so much fun... not enough time.....

Hope we can be classmates.... Good Luck.:horns:

Have any East Coasters gotten the final decision letter? I have not gotten anything. Should I call? I am really getting annoyed now. It has been such a long time. +pissed+

The mail system cannot be that bad. Do you think it got lost in the mail? Arghhhhhhhhhhhhh!

DrJ2B,
I received the letter on Friday in CT, and I know of those who received it in Boston on Friday as well. I'm not sure why it would take so long to reach NYC. For failure to receive a letter that was "Sent" on the 12th, your anticipation/frustration is completely understandable. If in your shoes, I would make the admissions office aware of my sitution tomorrow and request another letter be sent ASAP, if it is absolutely taboo for them to disclose the top secret via telephone.

How strict is UCLA about the statistics requirement...because I am really not going to make that one???

If you're living on an apartment complex where they have tons of mailboxes at the lobby, the letter may be slipped into someone else's mailbox. Alternatively, it may be hidden under those mailboxes within piles of unclaimed magazines, brochures, etc.

And I think UCLA does want you to have some background on statistics. If you have a course that covers that (Not neccessarily a statistics or biostat course), you can probably see if admissions office is fine with it.

Hey DrJ2B

I would call if I were you. I know how you feel, the crazy wait is totally insane. Good Luck:horns:

Hey Legend123!

I called today at around 9am (pacific time so noonish in NYC) and I was told to wait some more time. I told the secretary that people in my area have gotten their letters already and I was worried it got lost in the mail. She said UCLA's mail system takes a long time and she does not know why, but that I should wait a few more days. I am going to wait until Friday and, if I do not get the letter, I am going to call and ask for my decision. It should not take over 2 weeks to get a letter. That is ludicrous. Thanks for understanding. Congratulations on the acceptance! 🙂

how soon did y'all get ur final decision after ur interview? I called them today, and they told me to wait 6-8 weeks postinterview. is that true??

Hey Kwanny

I think as the March 15 approaching, most school will send out more acceptances("each school should have issued the number of acceptances at least equal to the size of its first entering class") according to the AMCAS guideline #3. I interviewed in the middle of Oct 03. Acceptance 2/12/04. Hope yours will come in the next batch on or before March 15. Good Luck for those still waiting. :horns: :horns:

Kwanny,

So you're a fellow SDNer who hasn't received a final decision letter yet? Me too. MDTom also. Who else? I think we are few.

I think this is at least true for last year's admission:

There are several sub-committees, each review some applications and try to make a decision. If decisions cannot be made on the application, it'll be sent to the bigger committee which makes the final decision.

I was under the impression that most applications have to goto the bigger committee, because the sub-committees need unanimous vote for decision. But since so many people got their decisions on Feb 12, I think they may do things differently this year.

Somehow, I think my application might have gone to the 'Big Committee' in the sky.

Some weeks ago, when I called regarding the status of my application, the secretary explained that my file was still under review, and that there were multiple committees (~6) looking at applications. Who knows... definately not me... +pissed+

Don't worry MDTom. You'll get in.

I finally got the letter today. I am on the second priority waitlist or "hold", so I guess I will not be going to UCLA. I am sorry Jlee. I wish I could have been accepted so you could take my spot. This is my first post-interview decision and it hurts. I will have about 4 more schools to hear from (2 interviews coming up), so I hope I get in somewhere (hopefully UPenn). Thank so much everyone for all the support. I am sorry I let you guys down. 🙁

Things like that happen. I got a straight post interview rejection from Stanford and it really hurts. I think a regular waitlist (In UCLA's case, the regular waitlist) will be a disappointment, but won't hurt as much...oh well...

good luck on your next two interviews drj2b. don't worry! this is only one of many final letters you'll get, and it's not entirely bad (although i'm sorry it's not entirely good...).

Really? I thought ur number 1 choice was hopkins....

🙂🙂

Don't worry DrJ, you're gonna get in to a great school! If UPenn admissions read SDN and knew your identity, they'd have already accepted you. 🙂🙂

Thanks so much everyone for your support! Rejections hurt, but with a family of SDNers like you all, it is definitely bearable. As always, I wish everyone the best! Good luck to you all and I have you all in my prayers! 🙂

Dr. J: I'm sorry about the UCLA decision (and they sure took a long time telling you about it), but hopefully UPenn will soon render it completely unimportant. I wish you the best of luck in this grueling process.

Thanks scrabbler! 🙂 I really hope so too! 😍

hey drj2b. i'm so sorry to hear that, man. did the interview ok and everything?

I thought my interview went okay. I just could not really read my interviewer. I felt that I was a bit nervous, but I was totally myself. I feel that if I brought across why I want to be a doctor and I was true to myself, then it went okay. At Yale, I was blown away because I felt that my interviews went so well. I felt that my interviewers gave me great feedback and were very interested in what I had to say. I did not get that feeling at UCLA. I felt my interviewer saw the interview as a chore for him. I honestly did not know how he saw me. I was just proud of myself for being who I am and not being fake like many people are. UCLA gets so many qualified applicants, so I understand that many people must be waitlisted. I am choosing not to accept my position on the waitlist because I have reconsidered going there. I hope that everyone that truly wants to go gets in. I am not meant to go there, but maybe UPenn will make my dreams come true with a nice acceptance in 2 weeks. :hardy:

whats in the ucla fin aid packet? what are some deadlines? how can we apply for scholarships?

what about housing??

Hey Dr. J,

Don't stress too much, I haven't received an interview invite and I've been complete there for almost 5 months. At least they wanted to see you! 🙂

drj......

sorry to hear about the decision. but like you said...you still have 2 interviews to go to and some post interview decisions coming up especially your most important one in upenn. unfortunately whats done is done...but i know you wont let this affect the way you handle your upcoming interviews.

you are an awesome guy and i know that with your kindhearted nature that in the end, you will end up on the path that is right for you. 🙂

DrJ2B,

Sorry to hear that. Good Luck.

I'm curious about this, too. From a previous UCLA thread (I can't remember which one), it seems like they are, unless you've had something like a statistics heavy genetics course and can convince them that you've had enough.

i might be half your classmates! any opinions on the drew program from geffen people?

Thanks for your input (all who replied). I will call them shortly to determine if I really am simply destined to go elsewhere.

I'm sorry to hear that Bell....but throughout this entire process, I strongly believe that what was never meant to be will not be. Everything happens for the best and although right now, we might not believe that to be true, months, years or decades later, I'm sure that most of us would look back and agree that all happens for the BEST. So keep your chin up! 🙂

I hope that a medical school of your choice will be lucky enough to have you as part of their medical institution. Good Luck!!

I just read this so decided to check on my status. It says the final decision letter was sent 3/1 and this is preinterview. So I guess they decided to reject me.

UCLA must really not like me. They reject me for undergrad, for biomed, and now for their regular med school. 🙄

I'm so sorry to hear that Slick 🙁 But UCLA's weird anyway...they're stupid if they overlooked your "slickness"! Don't even worry about it cuz you got some nice choices awaiting you =0)

I really hope we get to be classmates! If not, maybe residency mates?

Bell, I really hope that you'll get into another UC (If you're trying to stay in California). The process is really random, and even if you're the same applicant, you can apply this year and not have favorable decision, but apply the next year and get accepted (I'm not saying to reapplying, but just trying to illustrate how arbitrary it can be).
