Congrats supereagles!! 🙂 Do you live around the UCLA area, or close to it? So far, it's looking great for almost everyone so far. At least no rejections yet (I hope there aren't any in this first batch!!).

As I live some 40-50 miles away from UCLA, I think my letter will come tomorrow or Friday at the latest. Ugh...I think another 16-40 hours of waiting for me.

Damn, almost had a heart attack today with the thin envelope and all the anticipation but guess what

I GOT INNNNNNNN:wow:

Congrats to Calbee, this seems to be a good day for us internationals. You certainly deserve the acceptance and i hope to see you in my class in the fall.

Sorry about your situation Jlee, for all it is worth you are still an inspiration to us all👍

For you guys still playing the waiting game, keep your heads up.

Now it is time to hit the bottle:hardy:

I just checked, International students make up of about 0.1% of the UCLA Med Student population...so we can be that 0.1% 🙂

I live about 15 miles from UCLA. I suspect that this first batch of letters comprises of just acceptances and waitlists. Good luck!

I'm gonna predict a waitlist letter sitting in my mailbox tomorrow afternoon.

Last year the first person to recieve a waitlist letter was on april 19th (per a previous UCLA thread) I'm guessing acceptances.

Congrats supereagles! Woot woot #3! Keep those acceptances coming! 😀

Hey nighttrain!

I hope we East Coasters hear something today. I am in NYC. Where are you? 🙂 Good luck! I hope we both get acceptances!

good luck to you too. it looks like penn is your first choice. ucla is mine. i'm waiting in DC right now. mail usually doesn't take long to get here once postmarked.

anyway, ucla's admissions office is not the most user-friendly. do you all agree?

I definitely agree. Even the acceptance letter is just one page with not very much info on it (at least, that's what I gleaned from my mom over the phone). They ask you to write a letter back to them stating you'll come, rather than including a form and envelope for you. I'm not really complaining since I was very happy about the acceptance, but I wish I had more solid info about UCLA - I feel like I've just been infatuated with UCLA ever since my visit and I need to think through it carefully if I actually choose to go there. Anyone else feel like the info on the website/packet on interview day was rather scarce? Have I missed some amazingly informative link? The largest thing in our folder was the journal of art and literature.

i agree... they can do a better job of selling the school... they didn't even show us their Match List or anything like that...

the students there were a lot more helpful than the admissions office...

I am also trying to figure out what to think about UCLA. The vibe I got from the admissions office was something like, "we do not have to try and sell the school because we are UCLA and it would be a privellage for you to come here." I also agree that the students were more helpful in explaining the school. However, when I start to consider the fact that the cost of going to UCLA will be in the private school range I am not so sure I want an apathetic administration.

I could not agree with you more; that was the exact vibe I got and it was very disapointing for me.

Someone should show those arrogant fools at UCLA. We should start a revolution to put them in their place. Everyone should send their withdrawals immediately including those with acceptances. That'll teach them. 😡 👍

i dunno. they were really nice to me and tried telling me a lot about ucla. i did my research so i already knew a lot about it but it was nice they took the time to tell me things. maybe it was because it was 8am and i was the only one at the school basically.

hey father of upenn's babies 😉 i hope you get a favorable decision.

now time to think of how to get off this waitlist 😉

Jlee,

Why did you say the waitlist was immovable? Everyone that I know who goes to UCLA med got in off the waitlist.

There are two waitlists:

Alternate and hold.

Alternate is very movable, hold is not.

They don't take people who are on the hold list until July, if any. Last year no one was taken off the hold list and in years past maybe only 1 or 2 were taken each year.

I was put on an unranked waitlist...does this mean I'm on hold? Can someone explain more about the different kinds of waitlists? Thanks

Didn't we establish that everyone waitlisted now is in ONE category but as the season progresses, it will be divided into alternate and hold (1st and 2nd priortiy)?

anyone else get a letter today? did anyone outside of cali get it?

so far it seems there are only 2 types of letters... acceptance and waitlist?

if you were put on the waitlist (unranked just means this waitlist is unranked)...this is tier 1 waitlist. (some hope thank goodness)

if you were specifically put on "hold" (which is also unranked) this is tier 2 waitlist and is said to be immovable since they dont get back to you till july.

its already been divided man.

waitlist - 1st priority
hold - 2nd priority.

so theres not gonna be any more divisions as the year progresses.

cool so you'll still get in

i'm expecting the worst- hold or reject.

i have some hope. 😉 i dont want to feel crappy again...so im gonna keep my expectations of this waitlist low as well.

you on the other hand...with your prior success i don think they would reject you. i feel you will get what calbee got 🙂

i don't think so, i really had a tough faculty interview (i think he was out to destroy me) although my student interviewer did say she would "put in a good word for me."

jlee, are you in berkeley or fountain valley? i hope i get the letter today.

I actually dropped by the admission office today to drop off a letter to accept a spot in the class, and the staff was friendly. I had similar experience in the past when I dropped off a LOI and when I went for an interview.

I agree that they almost gave you no info at all about the school, and the student tour was unstructured. However, one thing I realize from this process is that the admission office doesn't reflect the whole culture of the med school. So far I didn't hear any complaint from all the UCLA Med Students that I know.

Oh and btw, tuition is HIGH! For Out-of staters, the price is: $15,173 Reg fee + $12,245 out of state tuition = ~$27,500. And this is updated in August 2003. With the potential 40% tuition hike...now I'm scared.

has anyone in the sf bay area receive their letters yet?

nope but i haven't checked today's mail yet.

i'm guessing it will be tomorrow or saturday though.

Good Luck, DoctorKevin. Sometimes the hard interviews are the best, assuming you didn't scream, cry, or hit the guy/gal.

I cannot check my mail until after 5:30 pm today in my area - Bay Area (which has cleaner air than LA, hehe).

Indeed, LA did a pretty poor job in selling their school. This was the shortest interview I have ever have. After the tuition & fees raise, I don't think it is a good deal particular for the out of state applicants. It may be good news for our Cali people. Hang in there. 😍 😕 +pity+ Getting confuse ? me too.

s'ok i'm not tan enough for la anyway.

Sorry about that. But I would still hold out hope for ending up in Los Angeles though.

sniff sniff, yeah i still have hope

USC is the official second choice now

No sign of a UCLA letter in today's mail (Bay Area). I thought for sure I'd get it today. 🙁 Now the stress and anticipation continues until at least tomorrow. The wait is driving me crazy!! :scared:

Did anyone else in the Bay Area do recieve one in the mail today too?

oops that was supposed to be "Did anyone in the Bay Area NOT receive one in the mail today too"

I got a 2nd priority waitlist. 🙁 Oh well, does anyone know if anyone got off this waitlist last year?

Hey Dr. Kevin, I'm really sorry about the rejection. Sometimes an interviewer can be an ARSE (Isn't that how they say it with British accent?) It's like if the same person was interviewed by two people, one interviewer may recommend acceptance, the other one rejection. It's a rather arbitrary process, really.

Actually I'd love in live in the Bay Area...oh well, maybe I'll wait until my residency years...

That sucks DoctorKevin. Post interview rejections are always the worst. I kind of take them personally.

Yikes! I feel like I'm the only one in California that hasn't gotten their letter by today. Is anyone else with me???

How do you know it's 2nd priority? Did the letter actually say that? If no, don't assume the worst! If you're on the same waitlist as JLee and others, rumors are that you can have as high as 40-50% of getting in.

Last year the implementation of a new curriculum turned some people off from UCLA (Don't wanna be ginnie pigs), this year, the potential huge increase in tuition may have an even great impact. So waitlist = realistic hope of getting in.

I'm sorry to hear about the rejection. I really would have thought you'd get in. But no more matter what, you're gonna be a doctor, and you got some choices as to which school you want to attend. I wish you the very best, and let us SDNers know where you decide to go.

The letters have reached Northern California....
🙂

OMG, I got in...holy mother of god______

I am feeling 😀 omg omg...this is freakin' amazing.....i can't believe it....a bit dazzling....

Congrats to everyone that got in!
Jlee, DK...both of you have acceptances...and from your posts you guys will make excellent docs anywhere you end up. Sending some good vibes to you guys!

you gave them an LOI? i suggest that you get used to the idea of going to ucla then cause you would be risking a lot if you dont go there. not much of a big deal since ucla seems to be your first choice but you still seem to be entertaining the idea of going to other schools. you probably already know this but the consequences of going against your words stated in a LOI can be drastic.

It was explicitly stated on the letter. It says something about how 2nd priority waitlisters won't be considered until July. Thank you for helping keeping my hopes up. I'll just be diligent about sending updates to the school and go from there. At least I have another UC to fall back on, and my parents and I are very happy about that.

Harps, u r a baller. No rejections and FIVE acceptances, two of which to NU and UCLA???

Damn, making us feel bad, eh? 😉 (j/k!)

Congrats man!

-Ice

P.S. AND you have Yale and Harvard acceptances coming up...I have a feeling! (crossing my fingers for you 🙂)

Thanks! I never even dreamed of such acceptances. My most fantastic dream was to get into a California school 🙂 I am sure you will have multiple acceptances/choices as well. As for Yale and Harvard, they have their pick of the lot, bro. I may have been given one of those "mercy interviews".
Anyhow, good luck with your cycle. Keep us updated!

Chalk up one more for the 2nd level waitlist. By the way, I'm in Tucson, so it looks like the letters have diffused out of CA.

I agree about the lack of organization in their application process. They even seem a bit careless: there was a typo in the secondary and one of the things they sent me was dated with the wrong year! Oh well. Good luck to the rest of those waiting.
