All you second tier waitlist people, I'm sure you still have a great chance, especially this year with the tuitions going up a lot. UCLA cares a ton about writing letters, so I would recommend updating them with letters, stopping in, etc, etc and I'm willing to bet this year will be the most taken off the waitlist than there has in ages.

[/B]

LOI is a very loose term, and can stand for both Letter of Interest and Letter of Intent. Mine is of the former. The only thing matters is how you word things in the letter. Since I didn't mention how I word it, I think it's better if you don't jump to a judgment right away.

I just mentioned my interest in the school in the letter, nothing of a committment.

If the 28K holds, I'm betting there will be a large trickle down effect to UCI and UCD. The people I know my school lost to UCI over the past couple of years have mostly been because of cost. I'm actually hoping for a trickle up effect at my school.

eek...i got waitlisted.

does anyone even know when they might start to look at the waitlists?

also, does anyone know how many acceptances they offer? is it double the number of vacancies?

wait wait wait, so UCLA is going to be 28K but not UCI, UCD, etc.??

all of this crucial information is escaping my grasp.

does anyone know the cost of UCI and UCSD?

Historically, all the costs have been exactly the same at all UC's. The information originates out of UCLA, but it should apply to all UC's. But I agree about UCI being a really good school if you are not interested in research at all.

so uc's will be 28k?? is that for a fact? that sux!

The possibility of raising in-state reg. fee from 15,xxx to 28xxx is outrageous to me. That's like a 85% increase or something.

i thought it was going to be 16K.??

thats what undergrad tuition will most likely be since they capped that increase at around 10%. but not including the fee increases UC med schools were gonna have anyway...we can look at a possible 40% increase. i just wanna know what they decide on soon.

Any news yet today??? I'm in Northern Cali and still haven't gotten my letter. If it doesn't come today, I'm going to go crazy!!!

I received my letter today in Connecticut...so it should reach N. Cali by today.

Gluck!

no judgement intended. usually when people refer to LOI it means a letter of intent, which basically entails stating your intent to go to a particular school over all other potential schools. i just wanted to make sure that you knew that because if this is what you had written, then it would be better to stick with ucla cause acceptances have been revoked (e.g. the school that had received the LOI would communicate with the other school that the student chose and that school would revoke the acceptance) in the past for students who have gone against their word.

letter sent 2/12.......its now the 20th and no letter in NY? the lady in the office says to give it another 4 or 5 days because of the holiday. are you serious ucla!?

calbee knows 😉.

its just that both letters have the same intials...

and its easier to write out LOI instead of letter of interest...

now while he writes an interest letter i shall soon start drafting an intent letter at the appropriate time.

OMG....I am In!! It has been a long wait and long overdue. I was screaming out loud on the street next to the mailbox. My neighbors thought I was insane.. .OMG..... Thank God.. now I can go out and celebrate tonight. Good Luck for those still waiting.😍

Next morning, I am still in the heaven, trying to come down on earth to reread the acceptance letter three times, realizing I am indeed been accepted by UCLA..I am no longer in a dream anymore.. ......😍 😍

What old name? I'm not like one of those idiots that uses his real name and then realize that it's risky and decided to change his screen name....NOT even close to that stupid 😉

Congrats to all who got in and my condolences to those who were hoping for good news.

Could you guys who have received notification, good or bad, tell me how long it took from the time you interviewed to the time you got the letter?

What's up,
I really don't know at this point whether I would go to UCLA if I got into UC Davis (SF is out of my reach, I think). I would love to come to LA though...the school is awesome w/ an unbeatable location. It's just that my family is in Northern California and it would be convenient to stay close to them. Also, I am still ambivalent about LA and SD. I liked both equally. My decision on schools will be last-minute.
What about you? What's your top choice, right now?

Are you referring to UCSF? Didn't u interview there? Don't you have 5 acceptances and no rejections? 🙂🙂

I highly doubt it is out of your reach. Would you go there over UCLA, though? (that's a tough choice, I'd think 🙂)

-Ice

P.S. A friend of mine last year got into UCLA, UCSF, and Harvard, and chose to go to UCLA; that's why I'm asking. U could be in that enviable position! 🙂

UCLA's definitely my top choice. I would go there over columbia or cornell any day. Only if I could get off the hold list at UCSF, would I begin to think about going somewhere else. 😉

Finally got my letter on Friday (SF Bay area) and I am waitlisted. LA was my top choice, but I found out if I go to UCSD I won't have to take Calc over the summer. Should I still still send the letter that UCLA asks for to "hold" my waitlist spot? Or should I just blow it because even if I do get off the waitlist I may not go for two reasons: 1) I liked UCSD just as much and won't have to take calculus 2) I am still holding out hope for UC Davis.

I liked UCLA a lot too so I feel badly at letting go at this point, even though I am not even in. Hmm...this is starting to sound more like a dialogue with self. I guess what I really want to know is that if I write to UCLA giving an update and express continued interest, would that be considered binding in any way?

P.S. How can you determine your waitlist priority...my letter just says "waiting list without a ranking"?

Waitlist without ranking here. Grrr. Now I have to decide if taking statistics next quarter is worth it. I really hoped for either an acceptance or a rejection so I wouldn't have to take a math class for the fun of it. 🙄

Quick question for those of you who received acceptances to UCLA: Do you consider yourself a superstar applicant (e.g. >3.7, > 33 MCAT, tons of great extracirriculars, etc)?

The reason I ask is because I interviewed there recently and I'm agonizing over wanting to receive an outright acceptance instead of a waitlist that eventually gets me in. As of right now, I haven't been accepted anywhere yet (August MCATer) and I can't stand the thought of having to continue to interview at my backup schools because I got waitlisted there.

Receiving an acceptance there would really relieve a lot of the stress of not knowing where I'm going and save me a lot of time and money as well. I'd also get to relax a bit in my classes and not have to kill myself to get As in all my classes.

I guess my question restated would be, have any "regular" applicants received acceptances at UCLA? I consider a "regular" applicant that got interviewed at UCLA to mean someone with a 3.5-3.7 GPA, MCAT 30-33, normal extracirriculars. Thanks for any input.

Hahaha...I only wish, man. I escaped the UCSF interview barely with my skin on...the guy just ripped me apart. Needless to say, the most intense experience I've had with anyone EVER. In fact, both the interviewer and I were exasperated after our debate. So, I think I'll have to look somewhere else!

What about you? What's are you considering at this moment?

Thanks for the encouragement, though.

That sounds like one of my student tour guides at L.A. Does he have brown hair and green eyes?

Sounds like my UCLA interview but I was too exhausted to put up a good fight.

You started to remind me of DrJ2B (The guy who is OBSESSED with UPenn) 😀

The UC's tuition (Even with the increase) still beat private schools, but come on, it's NYC...the temptation...temptation...

My interview at UCLA was slightly intimidating (Not to your extent though). My interviewer asked me about a neuroscience research I did (He's a neurologist/psychiatrist). I talked about it briefly and then he said, "I thought that's what people did back in the 70's, they still do those stuff nowadays?"....

I was totally stuck, because I obviously don't know the neuroscience field to comment on this, but I just tried hard to mention how my PI thought this was never done before.

I think he still gave me a positive report though.

Thanks for the shoutout! It makes me feel special. Now that so many people know UPenn is my dream school, it would be so horrible if I got rejected. 🙁 Good luck everyone and may everyone get in where they will be happiest!

Well man, UCLA got the ladies, dude. It's all about the ladies. 😉

Btw, does anyone know when the ucla's next committee meeting is?

UCLA has one of the best location in the whole USA(equally nice as San Diego). I understand the new world class, state of the art hospital(currently ranked 3rd in the nation - US News) will be ready this year ($1.4 Billion hospital and research facilities, the biggest single project of the whole UC system ever). It is hard to past this...

When did you interview? I interviewed mid Feb and I'm thinking my decision will be sent around March 15 (the deadline.) I sure hope it doesn't take 6-8 weeks like the office people told me. I've noticed all the mid tier schools like USC & Ohio State seem to get back to you really quickly (2-3 weeks) while the better ones want to make you wait a long time. Kinda annoying but what can we do?

Davis isn't even that high on my list (they've kept me hanging too.) If I get into UCLA, I'm going to send them an e-mail and tell them they're unprofessional for taking so long to respond, one way or another. We'll see how they like that.

i hope you are kidding about sending them such an email. there are lots of people waiting on decisions. someone writing such an email would stick out like a sore thumb. not only that, they could communicate with other schools about your actions. sometimes we just have to wait.

does anyone know the UCLA code for fafsa? got waitlisted, but am still trying to have some hope!
thanx

does anyone have any info about the waitlist? how big is the waitlist? do you know when it starts moving, and how many people are taken off the waitlist?

thanks

if you do fafsa online, then when you get to the part where you have to specify which schools to which to send the info, then you can do a search for ucla and it will give you the code. it's always a good idea to send the info to all of your potential schools cause if you get accepted then they can give you an award estimate without delay. if you dont know the fafsa website then search for it. it might be fafsa.gov.edu but im not sure.

I think it's E00374. Make sure you search by city and state instead of name because the search function doesn't catch words that are abbreviated - that code is for Univ of California Los Ang Sch Med, which I think is different from UCLA undergrad.

I'm serious, but only half serious (still not sure if I'll actually do it.) You're right--there are lots of people that are waiting to hear whether they'll be interviewed which is precisely why I say they're unprofessional. At least other schools tell you whether you're on hold for an interview (which means there's little hope of getting accepted) or reject you flat out. Davis on the other hand has no problem keeping you hanging until the very end.

As a case in point, one of my professors applied to Davis med sometime in the early 80s and he has yet to receive a rejection or interview invitation from them. He ended up going to UCSD med. He said that Davis routinely leaves people hanging without a rejection every single year, even today. That's why I say they're unprofessional.

If I go ahead and send that e-mail, I don't see how I could get in any trouble. Afterall, I'm not going to be rude about it. Not only am I just stating my opinion, it's one that has some fact behind it. That's the kind of guy I am--I'm not afraid to say things how I see them. What are they going to do? E-mail UCLA or whatever institution I end up at and tell them, "Your student talked badly about us. Rescind his acceptance immediately?"

Bewitched, I sensed that you're pretty nervous about Adcoms talking to each other about each "bad" thing that applicant did. Sure that had happened in the past, but it's probably for very serious problems, like faking a LOR, lying about a major thing in the app, etc. Now if I'm on adcom, I'll contact other schools about things like that too. But Alex hasn't even written that email, so you can't even tell how it'll be worded. I don't think adcoms are like Gods up there. Telling them about an opinion of the ways they should do things is a right, and maybe even obligation of an applicant.
