They haven't finished interviewing yet so perhaps they want to keep some spots "open." Probably not too many people give away their acceptances, but anything could happen after May 15. They may be able to accept all of us.

No Page 2 for you, UConn thread.

Giddyup, about when did they come out with the WL rankings last year?

They established the alternate list around mid April last year. You could email to check your status:
in June if you were on top of the list
in July if you were in the middle
don't know about the bottom third of the list.

Seems to be a bunch of info popping up about UConn on the 1st page with 4 threads. Good luck to you guys.

I bumped some old threads to answer some questions. The process doesn't change that much.

I figured when I saw some threads from 2006. Its a good way to get an idea of how the process goes from people that were going through it. Good luck again.

i was in the middle third of the waitlist last year and didnt make it obviously. id say if your in the bottom 1/3, you can email to check your status never.

What day does UConn start classes? I lent my MSAR to a friend and I can't find the date on the website.

This is to no offense to anyone. But IMO killer stats these days appears to be > 3.7 and 34

Also this is just my opinion as well. But I don't think the interview has as much weight in the selection process as other schools. At many schools everyone who is given an interview is considered on a level playing field.

At UConn the people who interview you right up a report and present you to the committee or > than 15 people. Than they all vote based on that, your primary app, secondary, and LOR's. I have heard from some students who conduct the student interview that it means basically nothing.

So again IMO i think the interview does serve a purpose. The most common being it can eliminate you completely (lower tier waitlist), make you comeptitive ( by far the most cases), or completely vault you a acceptance ( i'd guess maybe about 10 people a year)

overall it still comes down to whats on paper and your numbers more than anything else.

Again this is all just my opinion.

i think that dr sanford personally interviewed everyone would seem to mean that it would definitely hold some weight.

Thank you for the compliment!😀 I think my interview went well, but that said I've been WL at all 5 schools I've interviewed at so who knows.

I totally agree Giddyup, 'killer' stats have been bumped up significantly this year due to the volume/quality of applicants. Its constantly an upward trend. My little sister is applying to college now, and its the same thing for her. Stats and application numbers are way up across the board. Also, IMO I think its the ECs that are most important to the app. Obviously you have to have the stats to even get considered, but tons of kids have good stats. Everybody has different ECs.

at some point medicine will become less popular again ---- applications volume will eventually drop. we can all wait until it is less competitive and then apply, but I guess it's easier said than done. Good luck to all of you.

I wonder why so few people have yet to choose UCONN School of Medicine on the Allopathic Class Thread?

In regards to that,
I think that being on the waitlist this year isn't the worst thing in the world. I don't think that entrance into the program is not out of the question. The case is continuously made that the application process is extremely competitive, which is true. Nevertheless, based on some threads out there, it seems that the "competitive" (Scores+EC...etc) students are getting a high number of interviews (i.e. options), meaning that a select few are in the majority as always. It is important to recognize since a single student can have 10 interviews, get accepted 6 schools, and ultimately hold off there final decisions until May. The process can be very disconcerting. However, the "more competitive standards" have just slowed the process, and not necessarily improved upon it. I believe that there is still a good chance for those still very qualified students who have been waitlisted.

There is a good amount of truth in this idea. But I think that the # of applicants has also risen this year (in addition to what is considered competitive) and that, in the end, there are still relatively the same number of seats in med school classes and more (competitive) applicants than in past years.

That said, I agree with Lui...there is definitely going to be waitlist movement as there are a good number of multi-accepts out there and they can only put their butts into one seat come August it's just a matter of where.

i agree with surf, its relative, yes there are those getting 10+ interviews but there are so many more applicantts than in previous years. i dont think its getting any easier.

Let's not forget that UCONN is a bargain for instaters. There aren't many instate applicants who will choose another school if given multiple acceptances.

just got my first md acceptance 🙂

Now come on uconn! It'd be hard to turn down uconn because its instate. But wow i'd love to have that decision to make!

Karen ur interview coming up soon right?

As I said in the Jefferson thread, congratulations!! When I saw you were accepted, I initially thought the good news came from Uconn, but this is still huge. I am sure you feel more relieved now. It will be interesting to see what UCONN does later in the season.

My interview is next month.

the waiting is killing me.. they told me 4-6 weeks, i still got another 2 weeks to go at least, AHHH

Thanks Karen!!! Wow im soo happy and relieved!

I wish you the best luck at UConn!! At least one of us reapplicants HAS to get in right?!?! Hopefully both!

Goodluck!

anyone hear of people getting invites recently? i'm starting to lose all hope with uconn...was put on pre-interview hold back in november and haven't heard from them since. think my chances of getting a call for an interview are getting very, very slim....

same here. i was put on a pre interview hold and havent heard a peep since then.. i think our chances for an interview are pretty slim..

I wish everyone the best of luck, but a pre-interview hold doesn't seem too good. My recommendation for those on hold would be to re-apply if you're really set on UCONN. I was told that reapplicants are looked at more favorably in general. Are they? Who knows? Re-applying shows your determination for sure. It's too early to think all is lost. You may get an interview as late as the end of March or even early April. Good luck.

thanks for the support karen, i am actually a re-applicant. i applied to UCONN last year as well. so don't know about being looked at favorably. but i really like UCONN and hope i get an interview there.

I sure hope you're right. This is my second time around. Dr. Sanford actually remembered me really well cuz i was so persistent last summer. This year though I am being patient and letting them get back to me. I am not sure I should send another LOI, I don't know if it would be perceived as nagging or annoying, or helpful.

Alternate list again 🙁

as of now not ranked, will have to wait a while to find out where on the list i'll be.. Im praying itll be in the upper third this time.

hi guys- i emailed dr. sanford about this (i was put on pre-interview hold at UConn in september..) he said they are just now going back to review the pile of applicants on hold. so, im not sure if that is good news or bad news really, but wanted to pass along the info! :luck:

join the boat poker doc

u know i was thinking about the whole reapplicants are looked at favorably claim at uconn. I believe it is questionable. I know someone who this is there 4th year applying...

who knows? I met with Dr. Sanford and did eveything he suggested and more so to improve my application. Hang in there! When i learned to the alternate list again i was pretty depressed. And people kept telling me maybe things happen for a reason and that u never know what will happen. Two days after i received the letter I went to Jefferson and killed my interview and 2 weeks later im in like that. No waitlist...no bull**** ...nothing.

Sometimes things do happen for a reason. Taking money of out the question imo Jefferson blows uconn away. I am soo happy that I can be proud of where i go to school regardless of if i end up going to jefferson or if i finally get into uconn. Keep your spirit up and when you go to Jefferson just go the extra mile and blow them away. Tell them flat out how much you want this and how much you have grown through this humbling application process. Jefferson more so than any other school that I have interviewed at exemplifies that the school and student have to both want each other. Not just the student wanting the school if that makes any sense.

Good luck!

i hope i can follow your path haha, i got my jefferson interview in 24 days!

I just hope i can make that top third waitlist, it seems like u got a decent chance of coming off of that one.

Out of state applicants and international students definitely have it harder at Uconn than instaters (not to say we have it easy).

In-staters have it pretty rough too, the small class size and regional program with RI, ME, and VT(or is it NH?) cut down on seats available to strictly CT residents. IMO, UMass needs to participate in the regional program as well, or UConn needs to expand its class size to accomodate.

It isn't VT - they've got UVM.

i think they just have so few spots they gotta wait and see what they got at the end of the process..

shrug

As for now I think most of us are just twiddling our thumbs and sweating out that mid April WL ranking:scared:

Waitlist is a disaster. It holds you up because you don't know what could happen, but it's closer to a rejection than anything else. Yet, you develop a false sense of hope. It will likely happen to me and others here. 🙁

Enough negativity. It could always turn out quite well.

Interviewed this past Friday. Loved the school and would love to go there. Could easily imagine myself in that community. The schedule is nice too, with more time for self-study, which works better for me and my way of learning. Found myself more excited than I thought I would be by the PBL modality. Student interviewer was fun, engaged and casual. Faculty interviewers were gentle, although a discussion of my lack of research and upper-level science courses (I'm a post-bacc) was frank and to-the-point. At least if I don't get in they won't have left me guessing! The students who stopped into the admissions office to say hi were all characters- I loved it. Overall great experience.

Hi,

I was accepted at UConn and I have a few questions about the area. I didn't get to stay too long during my interview, so I thought I could get some info on here!

I was wondering if there are a lot of places to hike, bike, run, swim, etc in the area. Is the city where people head to? Basically, what's student life like?
Thanks for any info! 🙂

In Hartford you've got the XL Center (formerly the Civic Center) for big concerts, etc. (truck rally, anyone?), the Bushnell for theater, the Wadsworth Atheneum for art, the Webster Theater for small and local music acts (a lot of hard-core stuff) and a lot of good restaurants/bars (Sweet Jane's is a good bar). West Hartford will have some of the more "it" bars and restaurants, and a generally wealthier atmosphere. You can hike at Talcott Mountain right down the road from the school, or at Ragged Mountain in New Britain or along the AT about an hour away. West Hartford Reservoir (literally a minute down the road from the school towards West Hartford) has great biking/hiking, although mostly along paved trails. For swimming head to the shore or Rhode Island is only an hour-and-a-half away. Northampton, MA, and New Haven are both about 45 min. away, and offer even more options. You can ski at a couple local, small mountains, or go just two hours north to VT and Mount Snow and Killington. Jeez, I feel like a freakin' guide for all things CT.

Finding a place to walk/run should not be a problem, but I wouldn't rely too much on Hartford for major attractions. It's no Boston. You can see some cows occasionally (not only the plastic ugly ones in West Hartford center, but also some real ones). Congratulations on your acceptance and good luck with your final decision.

Green Doc,

your post made me miss home. oh ct and new england...can't wait for fall.

So you made up your mind in favor of UCONN? You will be happy here. I think all of us would, to be honest.
