UF c/o 2022 Applicants

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I think the confusion is whether UF offers acceptances only for the number of OOS spots (26 for last year) or if they offer more than the number of spots. So like if they offered only the number of spots, many alternates would have been called because they ended up offering admission to 65 people for the spots, whereas if they offer more seats knowing people will reject (outright accept 50 students expecting half to say no) then they would only call 15 off the waitlist to fill those remaining spots. I hope this made sense lol also I don’t know anything this is just my assumption
Yep. That's exactly what I was thinking. You said it better than what I could think of. Thanks. It sounds like that's not the case though.

EDIT: I mean, it sounds like it's not the case that they only offer accept 26 OOS students initially. Based on what's been said, it sounds like they actually did outright offer acceptances to about 65 OOS students last year, if I'm understanding correctly.

Acceptaces are offered to a greater number than the seats available to both in state and OOS. So for last year there were 26 OOS seats available, 86 IS.. 65 OOS seats were offered, but lets say 40 declined (leaving one seat available), so only 1 person from the alternate list is called. Its not stated if the 65 includes those that were offered a seat from the alternate, however. Not many people from th list get called, definitely not 25-50 like what was said in a previous post. I know for a fact the past 3 years there were between 3 and 12 pulled from the alternate.

I still don't understand, because how could they predict how many people will turn down the chairs? The numbers seem to vary a lot year to year.

Thats why I said that the alternates are not explicitly mentioned in the stats. So really there no way to say how far down a list each year goes. Its easier to offer oos seats since its not as likely they’ll be accepted vs in state, so specific stats on first round offers are hard to guesstimate.

I was alternate IS and now im happily part of 2021, so theres hope you guys! Ive heard of people being called right up to classes starting in some schools.

Do you happen to know how long the list is?

Wouldnt imagine the IS one being too long.. the OOS may be like 20,25 people.. honestly dont know. All i know is that its based on ranking.
I know a vet who is friends with Dr Ginn and called to put in a good word for me, it sounded like she said I'd have to blow the interview to not get an offer. I don't feel like I blew it so I'm kind of at a loss how I ended up where I am.

The interview carries close to half of the points for your ranking, so it can carry a lot of weight if it goes poorly. There is really no spot for personal calls like that. I worked with our deaprtment chair for year before i applied, and the only thing that mattered was his rec letter. Its all numbers to make it an even playing field for everyone.. at least a comparable one.

Just accepted my invitation! I could not be more excited! @FutureDVMc/o2022 do you know what kind of technology will be required of us? A friend that's a current 2nd year said that her class was required to get an iPad, but I've heard that can vary from year to year.

So are you guys thinking about buying the iPad Pro? I figured I’d ask for it as a graduation gift from my family!
totally not a vet student anymore, but I brought my iPad pro (which was a gift) and an apple pencil to VMX/NAVC (vet conference) this year and was very happy with performance using notability.

@VeiledChams, is there a specific model/size of iPad or will any do? Does UF order in bulk to get students a discount, or do we find our own deals? When will UF tell us this kind of information (what school supplies we need)??? Lol. Also, I <3 your user name a lot.

I figured we needed the iPads because they mentioned taking exams on them during our tour.
I'm interested in the Pro for the keyboard, pen, the notability app, ease of reading online textbooks, etc. But I'm sure any recent model would work! It would be great if those questions were addressed though! I have the first model of the iPad and it doesn't even update the software anymore, so I'll definitely be upgrading lol

I have the 10.5” Pro. Definitely recommend the Apple Pencil, the keyboard is superfluous if you already have the pencil. Note taking is quicker with the pencil directly on slides. I do not recommend the apple keyboard - there is a cheap keyboard I got from Amazon and it works much better.

I recommed the Pro 10.5” since thats what I have - its the perfect size IMO. You have to buy it on your own, no discounts through school (Apple doesnt do discounts lol). The iPad and stethoscopes are all you need as far as supplies. The past two years the school has givien students a stethoscope, but you can buy your own (Cardio IV would be my suggestion) since the one they provide, although a littmann, its not the best.
And thanks! I used to veileds like 7 years ago.

Oh wow! Good to know! Could you send/post that link? I think the keyboard cost like $200 additionally at Apple!

@VeiledChams Would you say that most of your classmates have that size? How much storage do you have? And ditto to what @FutureDVMc/o2022 said.

People have all sizes, there no real better one. I like the happy middle, between the 9.7 and the 12”.. this size is perfect for me. I got the 256GB but you dont need all that, i just have it because I dont just have school stuff on it..rule of thumb is get as much storage as you can comfortaboy afford.
Here is the keyboard

For current students how far in advanced do you need to start searching and securing a rental?

Apple actually has an education page for students and teachers! Their products are slightly discounted for those interested in the iPad! I'm probably going this route if I can!

How is parking at UFCVM?
I have the “Park and Ride” which is what I was eligible for as an off campus undergrad. I’m not sure if graduate/professional have a different decal, but there are a couple of lots for parking!

We have a Student Green decal for parking, and a new lot was just opened for UFCVM students only. The decal is $150 or so.
But is there like sufficient parking? This wil really be a determining factor for how far way from UFCVM i live. Haha

I’ve never had an issue whenever I visit. If most classes start at 8 or 9 AM I would just plan on getting there early for a good spot!

There’s also a parking lot right across the street, so if it happens to be full you would just cross the street directly across and find more spots!

Oh haha I dont mind walking! So given this info I'd look for an apartment at most like 15 minutes away from campus

Do any current vet students have any specific recommendations on housing? I prefer to live on my own and don’t really want student style housing

Same boat. I want to live alone not in student style but I also have a dog and cat

Zillow.com will be your best friend for those kinds of apartments.

As far as the Gainesville housing situation goes...this place is built for students. There is so much housing it's unreal, and they are constructing more every day (why? don't ask me 😡). Some of it can be pricey. Like @VeiledChams said, Zillow is great. or Trulia. Craigslist can help you find some real gems, too, if you keep your wits about you. I rent a really awesome house, and I actually found it through a realty website (there was an MLS#, not sure why it wasn't on Zillow). If you're in the area, you can also drive around looking for signs that people put out in their yards advertising rentals. Apartment complexes here (at least when I was renting several years ago) love to sign leases a long time in advance...so maybe don't wait until August 1st to try and find a place? A lot of places are pet-friendly, but breed restrictions are pretty common. If anyone has any questions about an area of town they're looking at, feel free to message me. Most of town is fairly safe but still.

Thank you for your help! I’ll check on Zillow. I was thinking of looking at apartments the weekend of the open house since I’ll be in Gainesville. What do you think is average or reasonable to pay for that area? I’ve been looking at some that are like $800-$900 but that seems expensive

I live in Tampa and I pay $1300 for a 2 bedroom apartment, so those seem cheap to me 😉

I'm a current undergrad and my rent when I was in an apartment was around 650$ for a room in a 2 bed 2 bath at the Enclave, which is an apartment complex close to the vet school but very very populated by undergrads so might not be the best choice for Vet school. My friends live closer to campus and pay anywhere from 500-800$ a month for their apartments depending on furnished/unfurnished and how many bedrooms/bathrooms there are. I know some people mentioned the Bartram which I think is much more expensive but I am not sure of the actual price, but that is seconds from the vet school and has more graduate students than undergrads. Overall I think the 600$ range is around average for the area since its further from the main campus!

I have a friend who lives in TownParc Apartments and she pays around $400. Living can be very cheap if you have good transportation/bus stop around you.

Wow I was paying like 1300+ for just rent (and my dog and cat’s rent) at my undergrad. There’s just sooo many places in Gainesville makes it hard.

Along those lines, only if buses 12 or 35 pass by. Otherwise you’ll be on the main campus routes.

Hi everyone! Does someone know the average ($$) in scholarships given by the school to OOS students?

Congrats to all those who are apart of UF CVM c/o 2022! It seems like some of y’all are having a hard time finding rentals but my boyfriend is a realtor in Gainesville (UF alumni) & he can help finding places that suits your needs. You can call Bennett Harrell at Pepine Reality. 9042522823

Cost & Financial Aid

Not a big amount. IS students got about $1000 first year to help with iPad purchase pretty much. There is barely anythinf for first year, and scholarships are rare anyways. You have to look for them on your own and from other sources.

That's a bummer. 🙁 When I read on the website that they gave out almost $744,000 '16-'17, I thought that sounded like a lot. But I guess if you divide that among that many students, that's almost nothing...

Congratulations to everyone who has been excepted! For housing you will need to be located ideally within 30 minutes of the vet school when you start clinics at the end of second year, so I recommend following this rule if you don't intend to move after your first year. Look at places south of Archer Rd, or anywhere you don't have to take archer to get to the vet school. Rush hour on Archer sucks and can easily add 10-15 minutes to your commute. A lot of vet students live in Treehouse Village (myself included) which is about 5-10 minutes from school, and is super pet friendly. However, once your fb page is created you'll get a more detailed list of apartments, townhomes, or houses that people recommend or are looking to rent out. As for your supplies and stuff need for vet school don't worry about that until the summer. You'll get an online orientation starting sometime in June that breaks down everything you need to do or need to buy. They may make changes up until then so it's best to wait for the official word.
