Hi all!

I have a decision to make coming up: Maryland vs. Jefferson.
I am familiar with both cities, so I was hoping that people could comment about the strengths/weaknesses of both programs, and overall which one they think would provide a better education or better opportunities, or both.

Thanks so much!

UMD is ranked higher (top 40 vs. 60+) and is half the price. Seems like an easy decision. 👍

Perhaps, but not in the way you think; I'd certainly pick Jefferson. Great programs in many competitive fields (rads, ortho, optho), awesome location in a cool city (Philly >>>>>>>>> bmore).

Was wondering if anyone else could offer thoughts on either of the schools?

Here are the things I am considering:

Maryland:
pros:
- cheaper tuition
- good patient diversity
- strong EM department
- better facilities and awesome gym
- lectures from only 8-12 in the mornings for the first two years

cons:
- standardized IBM laptop (gross)
- far away from girlfriend (who will be in NY for 2 years, then in philly the year after that)
- letter grades

Jefferson:
pros:
- very laid back, relaxed atmosphere
- printed/copied class notes from the professor, lectures posted online and can be followed at faster speeds to save time
- center city is beautiful and i love philadelphia
- closer to girlfriend
- honors/pass/fail

cons:
- more expensive
- heard from some people that jefferson doesn't match so well when you consider the 250 students it has

Ultimately I think most of the factors you're considering aren't overly important except cost, location, and school reputation. The number of students in a class typically doesn't matter unless they all go into the same specialty.

Both are great medical schools and you'll ultimately be able to do amazing things in your career going to either one of them.

UMD is ranked higher than Jefferson, but the Jefferson hospital is superb containing some of the best medical minds and talent in the nation. Plus, the location of Jefferson is very nice.

Personal influences aside, I think cost should certainly be considered too.

I wouldn't look at the match list in the process of choosing schools. The match list really depends on what the students want to specialize in and where they want to go. We have students matching into competitive specialties every year. Last year, my friend matched into MGH for surgery, and a few of my friends have already matched into ophtho and urology this year. By the way, Jefferson also has good pt. diversity and a strong EM program. They are also highly ranked for some competitive specialties like drizzt mentioned above.

It all comes down to what you want. How important is finance? If you're instate at MD, that's like half of the price of going to Jefferson. I think both schools provide similar quality in education and opportunities. I interviewed at both schools, and I preferred Jefferson (that's why I'm there haha).

If you have other questions about Jefferson, feel free to ask.
