Hey - I am on both Phx and tucson's waitlist, so I really appreciate the update trogdorr (I'd prefer phx). So, when I called Tara right after the WL emails went out, she told me that they had 3 tiers of their WL, and there were 51 (or something near to that) people on the list. Did she tell you that as well? She told me I was a third tier candidate (I asked her, so that means I'm in the last tier, and she says, "oh no! don't think of it like that.." I mean, please, lets call a spade a spade here...). Anyway, does anyone know anything about the tiers or how many people are on the WL for sure? I sort of feel like I don't have much of a chance of getting into phx if I'm all the way at the bottom.
WOW. the list is moving fast! I think you and I will be in before we know it! (I hope!)
btw, are you an undergrad at the UA? If so, good luck with finals!

Anyone else hear about Dean Shortliffe quitting?
I'm not sure about the tiers- the best explanation I've gotten is that the tiers have a certain amount of inter-tier "fluidity". clear as mud, right? As far as total # on the list, I got the impression that maybe it was around 30-40, but it could be more... I'm planning on checking in with Tara early next week again. The lack of movement is getting me down a little...
The whole slashing 10 million thing from the campus is the most concerning. I bet the whole demoting him and the "one school in two places" fluff is just them trying to cover for more funding shortfalls.Downtown medical school dean resigns

The University of Arizona announced Friday that Edward "Ted" Shortliffe will resign from his position as dean of the new medical school in downtown Phoenix, a decision that comes nearly three weeks after he learned his title would change.
Shortliffe's decision to leave his post is effective May 2. The decision comes after Keith Joiner, dean of UA's College of Medicine in Tucson, said that Shortliffe's title would be changed from dean to vice dean effective July 1.
Shortliffe was recruited from New York's Columbia University to guide the new University of Arizona College of Medicine-Phoenix in partnership with Arizona State University.
The dean position in Phoenix is considered critical because of the medical school's key role as a catalyst for downtown Phoenix redevelopment and for growth of the biomedical campus.
Shortliffe, reached in Vancouver, British Columbia, on Friday, declined comment. He deferred calls to University of Arizona President Robert Shelton, who issued a statement Friday indicating Shortliffe asked to step down as dean for a variety of personal and professional reasons.
"I very much appreciate all that Ted has done to help get our first class under way and want to thank him for his commitment to the college," Shelton said.
Shelton said that he would appoint an interim dean and launch an immediate search for a new dean to chart the medical school's growth. Shortliffe, for now, will remain with UA as a faculty member.
Joiner did not return a call Friday.
In a memo distributed March 31 to faculty members of the Phoenix medical school, Joiner said that the title of Shortliffe's position needed to be changed to clarify the relationship between the two medical schools.
"When the College of Medicine-Phoenix was established, the overarching concept was 'one medical school in two locations,' " Joiner wrote in the memo, which was obtained by The Arizona Republic.
Joiner's memo added that "substantial confusion has arisen about the overall relationship" between his position and Shortliffe's position.
"This confounds clear decision-making and impairs our ability to develop the programs in complementary fashion. This is not to say that differences will not exist between the two campuses, but they should not be viewed as two separate entities," Joiner wrote.
"Consequently, the decision has been made to clarify this situation by changing the title of the leader of the Phoenix program from dean, College of Medicine-Phoenix, to vice dean, College of Medicine-Phoenix."
Under Shortliffe's leadership, the new campus started last fall with a class of 24 students. It is recruiting a second class of 48 students with plans to graduate 150 doctors a year by 2015.
However, securing money to pay for the campus' ambitious expansion and abutting biomedical campus has been challenging amid the state's budget crisis. This week, the Arizona Legislature approved a budget that would slash more than $10 million from the surrounding biomedical campus in downtown Phoenix.
One of Shortliffe's highest-profile tasks over the past year was negotiating with Banner Health for a proposed $350 million teaching hospital.
But two key issues doomed the proposed UA-Banner hospital:
The university wanted a larger hospital than Banner was willing to deliver, and both parties disagreed on who should pay the costs of recruiting about 300 teaching physicians.
UA has issued a request for new partners to gauge interest for a new downtown hospital.
When Shortliffe was named dean of the medical school in January 2007, both Shelton and ASU President Michael Crow praised Shortliffe's past accomplishments and potential to shape the Phoenix medical school.
Crow, who previously worked with Shortliffe at Columbia University, was not available for comment Friday afternoon.
Despite Shortliffe's departure, Banner Health has no plans to pursue the downtown- hospital sweepstakes.
Maricopa Integrated Health System was an early unsuccessful bidder for the downtown hospital. After the UA-Banner deal collapsed, health district CEO Betsey Bayless held informal talks with Shortliffe about her group's desire for a new hospital. Bayless said through a spokesman that she enjoyed working with Shortliffe and will continue to work with his successor.
I know someone that hasn't been selected off of the PHX waitlist and he's 1st tier.
Also Tucson waitlist is higher than 30. It's closer to 40.
Maryland to AZ, werent you on the third tier? Just curious, thanks!
Hey yes, I was. I have no idea how they are doing their waitlist. Initially Tara told met aht they would go through their Teir 1 people first, and I believe she said there were 19 people in Teir 1. Then she said that while I was in the 3rd Tier, there was some fluidity. So, I don't know if (a) I was moved higher due to "fluidity" or (b) if they are at the 3rd tier.
In addition, I am now sort of paniced b/c of a residency problem. Apparently I was not classified as a resident, and have to petition for Fall of 2008 - but if I get denied, I can't matriculate. Does anyone have any experience with this or know of anyone who has actually been unable to matriculate due to a residency problem?
Yes, I will absolutely let you know. Its good to hear someone is in the same position, b/c when I spoke with Tara she said that people who had experienced this problem in the past had all been able to matriculate. I will let you know tomorrow - do you want me to PM you? I am not actually sure how to do that though...maryland to az -
i'm in the same exact position as you. i was SO excited to get the good news, but now I am dealing with residency issues. I've been going to Iowa for undergrad for the past 5 years, but I don't have residency here. My only residency is in AZ - otherwise I'm technically homeless 🙁
I'm hoping to get it figured out. I am also planning on moving back to AZ ASAP to straighten everything out and hopefully matriculate. I am going to meet with Mr. Lares. Would you mind letting me know how your meeting goes?
Good luck to you and congrats on getting in!

Please tell all of us what happens. I'm curious to know if I need to move back to AZ as well. I was planning on working on a Public Health project in Texas this summer, but I'll move back to AZ if I have too.
Also, you have that one month of not being in school. I looked in to switching my residency to Texas, and they told me that even though I wouldn't be working in Texas for a complete year (I started in September), I could still become a resident because I started looking for a job in July and I was completing applications so I would be exempt from the "full year" of working criteria. So, maybe Arizona has something similar for your situation? I thought that info might be helpful for you. You could say you couldn't find a apartment to move to Arizona until September, or some other similar situation. Hope everything works out and keep us updated!
Thanks for the info Marlyand-AZ, I was just about to get in touch with Dr. Flynn this morning and Tara called me. I thought she was responding to my email last week. I wanted to schedule an appointment with her to talk about what I should improve in my app for next year. Basically I was throwing in the towel.
She says: "Good morning, X. I have what you may consider as good news". At that point I passed out. 30 minutes later I came to and she was still talking. But I didn't mind.
So in conclusion, I got pulled off the PHX waitlist today. (3rd tier)

The calendar says school begins August 4, but when does orientation start? Anyone know how long it is?
