Just in case there are any phx hopefuls out there...
as of last tuesday there had been virtually no wait list movement since right after acceptances went out. i believe they are only on #4.
there are thirty-some wait listers.
there are 18 dual acceptance people- to whom letters were sent recently encouraging those picking tucson to drop their phx spot- so there may be a little list mvmt due to that.
if you're one of those people holding onto your phx spot but intending to go oos or to tucson, please open up your spot for us poor schmucks who are waiting. Then i can let go of my tucson acceptance and get another waitlister in down there.
the may commitment deadline is right around the corner. it's about to get more exciting...

Hey - I am on both Phx and tucson's waitlist, so I really appreciate the update trogdorr (I'd prefer phx). So, when I called Tara right after the WL emails went out, she told me that they had 3 tiers of their WL, and there were 51 (or something near to that) people on the list. Did she tell you that as well? She told me I was a third tier candidate (I asked her, so that means I'm in the last tier, and she says, "oh no! don't think of it like that.." I mean, please, lets call a spade a spade here...). Anyway, does anyone know anything about the tiers or how many people are on the WL for sure? I sort of feel like I don't have much of a chance of getting into phx if I'm all the way at the bottom.

Hey guys, I just wanted to let you know that the waitlist at Tucson is now through 20. Last year, at this exact time they were at 10. An additional piece of info is that they got to 38 around the May 15th deadline, and eventually went to 53 on matriculation day. Leadem said that he would guess they will go up to 68 off the waitlist, so we'll just have to see how close his prediction is.

haha i just called tanisha today too. same info - at # 20.

I wonder how many calls she gets a day about waitlist movement. she's always so incredibly nice and patient!

That's comforting news that they were only at #10 last year! I hope the list continues to move at this pace.

wildcat- not much longer to go now! 🙂

I think the tier waitlist is that people are grouped in different categories and as they pick people off the waitlist they want to make sure the incoming class will be "well-rounded". So, its not a direct, go down the line waitlist like Tucson has. Don't quote me on this but I'm pretty sure thats how they're doing it. I'm just betting on my chances at Tucson because it seems like a more direct, concise process. And the waitlist is moving quicker in Tucson!

WOW. the list is moving fast! I think you and I will be in before we know it! (I hope!)
btw, are you an undergrad at the UA? If so, good luck with finals!

I'm not sure about the tiers- the best explanation I've gotten is that the tiers have a certain amount of inter-tier "fluidity". clear as mud, right? As far as total # on the list, I got the impression that maybe it was around 30-40, but it could be more... I'm planning on checking in with Tara early next week again. The lack of movement is getting me down a little...

Anyone else hear about Dean Shortliffe quitting?

- Statement from University of Arizona President Robert N. Shelton regarding the Phoenix campus of the College of Medicine -

"After what has been a dynamic and successful initial period of growth at the College of Medicine - Phoenix campus, we are today announcing plans for the next phase in the campus's evolution. Dr. Edward H. Shortliffe, who has provided exceptional leadership to the campus through this first year of operations, for a variety of personal and professional reasons, has asked to step down as dean, effective May 2, and to return to the faculty. I very much appreciate all that Ted has done to help get our first class underway, and want to thank him for his commitment to the college.

I will appoint an interim dean shortly, and we will immediately begin the search process for a new dean to lead the campus through the next stage of its growth. The expansion campus began its first year of instruction in the Fall of 2007 with a class of 24 students, and is in the process of identifying the second class of 48 students. We are very proud of the success that this campus has already had, and the enormous potential that it has to educate more physicians for our state and to improve the health care of all Arizonans."

Yes, I am also finding the WL movement depressing. When I spoke with Tara a while back she said to me that they were going to get through their top teir (I belive she said there were 19 people in it?) first, and then move to the second and third tier - which she did say was fluid (yes, mud is clearer)... So anyway, if you do call Tara, you might want to ask her if that is still the case. Wooof. This stuff is confusing. One of the other schools I am WL at does not tell you at all - I almost feel like thats better than phx's vague system.

Downtown medical school dean resigns
Ken Alltucker
The Arizona Republic
Apr. 19, 2008 12:00 AM
The University of Arizona announced Friday that Edward "Ted" Shortliffe will resign from his position as dean of the new medical school in downtown Phoenix, a decision that comes nearly three weeks after he learned his title would change.

Shortliffe's decision to leave his post is effective May 2. The decision comes after Keith Joiner, dean of UA's College of Medicine in Tucson, said that Shortliffe's title would be changed from dean to vice dean effective July 1.

Shortliffe was recruited from New York's Columbia University to guide the new University of Arizona College of Medicine-Phoenix in partnership with Arizona State University.

The dean position in Phoenix is considered critical because of the medical school's key role as a catalyst for downtown Phoenix redevelopment and for growth of the biomedical campus.

Shortliffe, reached in Vancouver, British Columbia, on Friday, declined comment. He deferred calls to University of Arizona President Robert Shelton, who issued a statement Friday indicating Shortliffe asked to step down as dean for a variety of personal and professional reasons.

"I very much appreciate all that Ted has done to help get our first class under way and want to thank him for his commitment to the college," Shelton said.

Shelton said that he would appoint an interim dean and launch an immediate search for a new dean to chart the medical school's growth. Shortliffe, for now, will remain with UA as a faculty member.

Joiner did not return a call Friday.

In a memo distributed March 31 to faculty members of the Phoenix medical school, Joiner said that the title of Shortliffe's position needed to be changed to clarify the relationship between the two medical schools.

"When the College of Medicine-Phoenix was established, the overarching concept was 'one medical school in two locations,' " Joiner wrote in the memo, which was obtained by The Arizona Republic.

Joiner's memo added that "substantial confusion has arisen about the overall relationship" between his position and Shortliffe's position.

"This confounds clear decision-making and impairs our ability to develop the programs in complementary fashion. This is not to say that differences will not exist between the two campuses, but they should not be viewed as two separate entities," Joiner wrote.

"Consequently, the decision has been made to clarify this situation by changing the title of the leader of the Phoenix program from dean, College of Medicine-Phoenix, to vice dean, College of Medicine-Phoenix."

Under Shortliffe's leadership, the new campus started last fall with a class of 24 students. It is recruiting a second class of 48 students with plans to graduate 150 doctors a year by 2015.

However, securing money to pay for the campus' ambitious expansion and abutting biomedical campus has been challenging amid the state's budget crisis. This week, the Arizona Legislature approved a budget that would slash more than $10 million from the surrounding biomedical campus in downtown Phoenix.

One of Shortliffe's highest-profile tasks over the past year was negotiating with Banner Health for a proposed $350 million teaching hospital.

But two key issues doomed the proposed UA-Banner hospital:

The university wanted a larger hospital than Banner was willing to deliver, and both parties disagreed on who should pay the costs of recruiting about 300 teaching physicians.

UA has issued a request for new partners to gauge interest for a new downtown hospital.

When Shortliffe was named dean of the medical school in January 2007, both Shelton and ASU President Michael Crow praised Shortliffe's past accomplishments and potential to shape the Phoenix medical school.

Crow, who previously worked with Shortliffe at Columbia University, was not available for comment Friday afternoon.

Despite Shortliffe's departure, Banner Health has no plans to pursue the downtown- hospital sweepstakes.

Maricopa Integrated Health System was an early unsuccessful bidder for the downtown hospital. After the UA-Banner deal collapsed, health district CEO Betsey Bayless held informal talks with Shortliffe about her group's desire for a new hospital. Bayless said through a spokesman that she enjoyed working with Shortliffe and will continue to work with his successor.
The whole slashing 10 million thing from the campus is the most concerning. I bet the whole demoting him and the "one school in two places" fluff is just them trying to cover for more funding shortfalls.

Hey there - so I talked to Tara today - she told me that I had reason to be hopeful and that after May 15th she may be able to contact me with good news or more information. That said, she said everything in a very round about way, so I could have mis-interpreted what she was saying. Has anyone else talked to her and had her give you a sense of your waitlist placement?

Thanks!

WOO-HOO!!!!!! I got accepted today off the WL! (#24)

Congrats to stcroix too!!

And good luck to all wait-listers! It's moving fast....hang in there!!

congrats to you too wildcat!!! 🙂

good luck to the rest of the wait listers!

Subject: Appointment of Interim Dean in Phoenix

As you know, it was recently announced that Ted Shortliffe would be stepping down as dean at the The University of Arizona College of Medicine - Phoenix in partnership with Arizona State University. I am very pleased to announce that I am appointing Stuart Flynn, MD, as the interim dean, effective immediately. Dr. Flynn has been serving as the associate dean for academics at the College of Medicine - Phoenix since June 2006. I am delighted Dr. Flynn will take on this responsibility and know that with your support he will be most successful in leading the campus through this transition.

Dr. Flynn led the team that developed the curriculum for the College of Medicine-Phoenix, accredited last year by the LCME (Liaison Committee on Medical Education). Previously he was a professor of pathology and surgery, as well as director of the residency program and co-director of medical studies, at Yale University. He received his medical degree from The University of Michigan and was a postdoctoral fellow at Stanford University School of Medicine. I hope you will join me in welcoming Dr. Flynn to his new role. We hope to have an announcement of the permanent dean by the fall, and will be announcing the composition of the search committee for the COM-PHX dean in the very near future.

Hey all - I got into Phoenix today, and I am dropping off Tucson's waitlist. Goodluck!

Hey all, I was accepted to Tucson and then received a call today from Phoenix that my Tier II waitlist spot became an acceptance. So, someone should be getting some great news from the Tucson waitlist today 🙂 I have accepted Phoenix and withdrawn from Tucson. Best of luck to everyone, this process is just so draining but we all know the reward is worth wait!!

Just called the Tucson campus. They just accepted number 30!

I know someone that hasn't been selected off of the PHX waitlist and he's 1st tier.
Also Tucson waitlist is higher than 30. It's closer to 40.

Maryland to AZ, werent you on the third tier? Just curious, thanks!

I just called like 3 seconds ago. They are at 30. And I also asked how many people have taken themselves off the waitlist between 30 and 57 (which is what I'm at) and they said 1. Nonetheless, things are looking really good, considering it's not even May 15th yet.

Hey yes, I was. I have no idea how they are doing their waitlist. Initially Tara told met aht they would go through their Teir 1 people first, and I believe she said there were 19 people in Teir 1. Then she said that while I was in the 3rd Tier, there was some fluidity. So, I don't know if (a) I was moved higher due to "fluidity" or (b) if they are at the 3rd tier.

In addition, I am now sort of paniced b/c of a residency problem. Apparently I was not classified as a resident, and have to petition for Fall of 2008 - but if I get denied, I can't matriculate. Does anyone have any experience with this or know of anyone who has actually been unable to matriculate due to a residency problem?

Yeah. I have that problem too. They really hassled me last fall because I graduated May 2007, but stayed in Texas for a year to work with a professor(grew up in Arizona). I have only had residency in AZ, so they can't deny me AZ residency (I at least I hope so!!). But bottom line, if they want me to move back to AZ now so that I can enter med school in the fall, then I have no problem dropping everything to head back to AZ. If you have an Arizona ID, AZ car plates, registered to vote in AZ, etc, then you should be fine. Here is the ASU website that describes AZ residency. Click on the Board of Regents link.

Hope this helps and congrats on getting in!

Thank you microbes and rooter! The information helps. I moved here from Maryland in Sept 2006 to work for the NIH and on the Gila River Indian Reservation. I graduated college from a school outside of Chicago in June 2006 and moved back home to Maryland for 3 months while I figured out my job situation, so I was not financially independent until Sept 2006. Thus, technically, two years of financial independence would be Sept 2008 (a month after school starts). IF they want to strictly interepret the 2 year of financial independence requirement strictly, then I wouldnt make it!

I started the MPH program at the U of A in August of 2007, and the second requirement for residency is that I be in AZ working w/o being in school for a year - so once again, I am one month short of a full year before I went back to school (Sept to August working and not in school). I now work about 30 hrs with ASU and am in teh MPH program full-time. When I petitioned last semester to for residency, they denied it to me, saying that I had not been financially indepenedent for long enough. Anyway, I am meeting with Abram Lares tomorrow, so hopefully we can work it out. I have an AZ license, plates, and am registered here to vote. My Maryland residency (where I grew up) is kaput - they will not consider me a resident and I did not appeal their decision. I feel like that alone should indicate my intention to live and work and attend school in AZ.

So, I am anxious (how out of character for a pre-med...) and obviously giving everyone way too much information than they care to hear about my probem 🙂 Do you all still think it will be OK? I was so thrilled to get the good news, and now I feel like I am back in limbo land again. Goodluck to everyone who is on the waitlist! I hope it works out.

I just called just now, and they are at 32. Just passing the good word. 🙂

maryland to az -

i'm in the same exact position as you. i was SO excited to get the good news, but now I am dealing with residency issues. I've been going to Iowa for undergrad for the past 5 years, but I don't have residency here. My only residency is in AZ - otherwise I'm technically homeless 🙁

I'm hoping to get it figured out. I am also planning on moving back to AZ ASAP to straighten everything out and hopefully matriculate. I am going to meet with Mr. Lares. Would you mind letting me know how your meeting goes?

Good luck to you and congrats on getting in!

Yes, I will absolutely let you know. Its good to hear someone is in the same position, b/c when I spoke with Tara she said that people who had experienced this problem in the past had all been able to matriculate. I will let you know tomorrow - do you want me to PM you? I am not actually sure how to do that though...

Please tell all of us what happens. I'm curious to know if I need to move back to AZ as well. I was planning on working on a Public Health project in Texas this summer, but I'll move back to AZ if I have too.

Also, you have that one month of not being in school. I looked in to switching my residency to Texas, and they told me that even though I wouldn't be working in Texas for a complete year (I started in September), I could still become a resident because I started looking for a job in July and I was completing applications so I would be exempt from the "full year" of working criteria. So, maybe Arizona has something similar for your situation? I thought that info might be helpful for you. You could say you couldn't find a apartment to move to Arizona until September, or some other similar situation. Hope everything works out and keep us updated!

OH. Thats great advice. I was offered the job in like July, I just didnt start until September. Maybe I can make that work for me. I will let you all know what happens tomorrow, and I will also see if I can get any info from him about what you guys who live out of state might need to do - that is, if you need to move here asap or something. This whole thing is a pain!

Quick question: residency determinations are made based on presence for 1 year from application or 1 year from matriculation?

I met with Lares, and it was all fine. He just needed to see all the paper work and hear my story. No mention was made of specific months or anything. I asked about you all's problems and he said that you guys should call him and he can see what you need to do. Hope that helps. I'm pretty relieved. Goodluck to everyone on the waitlist. I really hope it works out for you all!!

Thanks for the info Marlyand-AZ, I was just about to get in touch with Dr. Flynn this morning and Tara called me. I thought she was responding to my email last week. I wanted to schedule an appointment with her to talk about what I should improve in my app for next year. Basically I was throwing in the towel.
She says: "Good morning, X. I have what you may consider as good news". At that point I passed out. 30 minutes later I came to and she was still talking. But I didn't mind.

So in conclusion, I got pulled off the PHX waitlist today. (3rd tier)

Congratulations chicksdigdocs! Does anyone know how many that is from the Phoenix list now? I emailed Tara about the tiers, but haven't heard yet how it works. Oh well, guess I'll keep waiting(2nd tier, whatever that means!)

Chicksdigdocs... Congrats! Did you also get a Tucson acceptance/waitlist?
Just watching the tucson waitlist like a hawk, anybody hear what the lastest Tucson waitlist number is? Thank god its a ranking number versus the Phoenix tiers!

Congratulations! if you don't mind me asking how were ur stats and ECs during your year, its good to see you got in!...
So i am guessing you accepted?

3.65 cum gpa - 3.5 science gpa (I was engineering major so it looks like they cut me some slack)
MCAT- 10,9,10 N

Volunteering here and there, some physician shadowing, 4 months of internship at TGen (was offered in January so it wasn't on my AMCAS).
Nothing too impressive now that I think about it, but I do have a winning smile 🙂

The tucson list is now sitting at 33. Starting last week they moved 7 in a four days, and now its been one in the last 4 days. Good Luck everyone! 😎

Rejected from Tucson.

Wow, how strange to be waitlisted and then accepted in Phx and yet total denial from Tucson. Some of these stories are very strange and yet no one seems to have even cared about the campus form in the Phx office. So much for applying logic here lol

However it does show that Tucson is making in the field experience one of the highest ranking things they are looking for, guess that rumor is true

Anyone know when Tucson starts next year? Phoenix too, out of curiosity?

They are up to 35 as of today.

man, they have been moving really slow lately. do you guys really think a lot of people are waiting til may 15 to make their final decisions? i really really really hope the waitlist moves a TON on thursday and friday 🙂
