Looks like im going oos for med school.

well thats it for me in this thread for at least 2 years, I would like to wish you all good luck but I have the conflicting desire for UofA to burn to the ground

Their rejection letters have not changed from +10 years ago, so likely whoever wrote them originally might not even work at the U of A anymore . . i..e. we know how emotional invested you are (should also apologize for mean interviewers), I felt that the interviewers at U of A were very rude, at least 9 out of 9 for me, I heard the rumor that they are nice to you when they let you in (i.e. when you become a student), but maybe it is just more of the same? I think it is weird that they hussle you around to like 3 different interviewers and then a community physician, seems a little like everyone up there wants to have say from PhD doing research to ancillary staff, too many cooks in the kitchen?

I am new to posting here - mostly I've just been a lurker. Lurkity lurk lurking around. So, I was wait listed this morning at both Phoenix and Tucson (not so lucky #53). I called Phx this morning to ask where I was on the wait list and I was able to get some information - she said I was somewhere near the middle of the list.

So, I guess my question is for you all is if anyone can offer me any advice as to the chances of good wait list movement at the phx campus - i.e., do I have a shot at getting in? I know its probably hard to say, but many of you seem pretty plugged into to how this all works. I thought someone might have some advice for me or some kind of inside information.

Its my first choice, I work now as a research assistant (and I'm finishing my MPH) at ASU with the College of Nursing, and I'd like to keep collaborating with the researchers I am currently working with during medical school, so phx seems perfect.

Thank you!

2008 College of Medicine-Phoenix Applicant,

Thank you for your interest in The University of Arizona College of Medicine-Phoenix, in partnership with Arizona State University. We have been fortunate to attract a large number of highly qualified candidates for our limited number of seats this year. In this regard, I sincerely regret to inform you that we are unable to extend an admissions offer to you for our next class.

DENIED FROM PHX!!!!!!! woo-hoo!!
why couldn't they be explicit and say I am not on their waiting list either?!

I'm #57 on the waitlist at Tucson, and straight rejected from Phx. After all these months of being in limbo, I'm still in limbo. I hope everyone wants to go to Phx so I can get in!

P.S. If you have no interest in going to UA, please withdraw so I don't have to be fully moved in at New York Medical College at the end of July, and then have to turn around.

Being rank 74, i hope you move... and love it there, and decide not to come back. lol

I will probably withdraw my Tucson waitlist in the next few weeks not that me leaving spot 62 will help very much but at least it is one less person in front of some people.:luck:

so you guys seem pretty optimistic about waitlist movement. especially with the dual admissions thing.

but, i guess i thought about it in a different way. wasn't the number of medical school applicants at a record high this year? so don't you think a lot of the stellar students that got in, may have not gotten in to other schools(as in previous years) because of the fierce competition this year? Therefore...less withdrawals...less spots for waitlisters..

someone prove me wrong...for my sake and everyone else's sake!

i'm actually flying into Phx tonight...gotta get out of this miserable weather in Iowa.

It's actually pretty low compared to the past couple of years. They had near 700 last year, this year 574 applicants. But as for waitlist movement, who knows. 🙁

It seems that Phx has already pulled 2-3 from their waitlist, Tucson has yet to do anything.

I'm waitlisted right now, but I'll feel the same way if I don't get in. Thats why I'll be happily switching my residency to Texas if I have to apply again. Good luck to you

Majatoi, do you mind if I ask how you know that Phoenix has already pulled some people from their waitlist? Thank you!

There was a high amount of applicants nationally but also a lot of school increased their upcoming class size. And more applicants doesn't exactly imply that there were more "stellar" students applying.

I keep asking the Tucson gals questions none-stop.. Ann.. at our Tucson Admissions office, I asked if Tucson has pulled any yet... so she responded with no and that Phx has pulled 2-3 from their waitlist.

Rejected outright from both UA-phx and UA-tucson. I must be doing something right?

DAmn... you are amongst a group of people who that happens too.. U of A has a weird history doing such things as that...

I assume your debating Harvard and Hopkins anyways right now. 🙂

Yeah that is seemingly strange but in all honesty, you would probably not have picked UA. I would personally slap you if you picked UA over all the ivy leagues you are probably landing. And I'm sure the admissions committee knew you would reject UA anyway.

Congrats on being a baller by the way.

I also heard from someone in the PHX campus that 3 had been taken from the waitlist already. Hope that helps.👍

#90 on Tucson's waitlist, rejected from PHX. So, what is everyone going to do in the next year while waiting to reapply?

It's too late for grad school, I already graduated... what do I do now?

Congrats to everyone that got in.... now if 90 of you will just decide to go to other schools, that would be great (in Bill Lumbert voice, of course).

I emailed Tanisha (from Tucson) and she told me that while she doesn't know when people will start getting picked off the waitlist, she does know that the waitlist moves really fast around May 15th.

We wait-listers should get some sort of consolation prize for all the anxiety and waiting we are being put through!

But, if it eases some of your minds, I emailed Dr. Leadem and he said that he expects to go deep into the waitlist this year!!!!!! How deep? I've got no clue.

also....did you waitlisters get your email in the same second as your rank number? I got my email at 8:00:24 and I am ranked #24. weird!!

maybe it's all automated....sending an email every second.

Anyone else rejected from Tuscon but waitlisted at PHX? Does anyone understand how the waitlist system works at PHX? I heard something about being put into groups according to your background.

I'm waitlisted at PHX, and assuming that I am rejected from Tucson because I haven't heard anything. Did everyone receive rejections from Tucson today as well?

I got both emails this morning around 1am PHX and 8:30 Tuc

Which campus was your preference?

I wrote Tuscon on my preference form because I thought I had a better chance down there. I was wrong about that one.

Very similar story here,
Lived in AZ my whole life
GPA >3.9
MCAT >35
Lots of volunteer experience and research experience, planned to work with underserved
Rejected 3 times, never waitlisted

makes me feel better because I guess they have institutionalized bias against those who are into 'learnin. I really wish they would outright say that if you gpa is 3.8 or greater maybe that you shouldn't waste time applying to them. This would have saved me a lot of heart ache and wasted time practicing interviews and scheduling appointments with admissions where they are supposed to go over your file but they just scowl at you and don't say why you were rejected. I don't why they couldn't accept some students with high grades, it would just mean that they go down their waitlist in the worst case scenario, and best case scenario they pick up some good students!

Take solace that many of their med students don't hang around in the state and maybe we can come back for residency at some point, i.e. getting an MD from Harvard or John Hopkins and bring it back to an Arizona residency, . . . a lot of students I have met from U of A don't seem overly enthusiastic with Phoenix and Tucson hospitals they have rotated at, i.e. I would have been thrilled to be doing rotations in my home town, but students from Phoenix who go to UA med school don't seem that thrilled with Phoenix and want out N=5, so just a small study ;-)

True Story from a friend: She really wanted U of A, had good grades, went to University of Washington for med school (hated it), and then tried to go back to U of A for ob/gyn residency, she ended up going to California for residency, but preferred U of A, . . . she was upset about this all and scheduled an appointment with an administrator there and basically tried to get information about why she was having so much difficulty getting back into the state (was very frustrated and upset), did not get any useful information, and they basically just toyed with her! I think U of A may actually like toying with people they think will come back to AZ for compelling reasons after being rejected from their medical school, i.e. let's take people who are luke warm about the U of A and try to keep them here while the dedicated ones we'll get back later anyhow? Just my pet theory

Hmmm... thats interesting! Who did you hear that from? I called them this morning and I sort of badgered the girl on the other end into telling me where I was on the list. She said I was about in the middle. Whatever that means. I usually talk to Tara, but I talked to someone different today.

I have no idea who I talked to. I asked my rank but she said she couldn't tell exactly because we are being put into groups to ensure there is equal representation of different backgrounds in the class.

Thanks. As long as I live, I will never understand the mystery that is the adcom.

i was under the impression that if you preferenced tucson campus (which i did and got in!), you wouldn't hear from phoenix...and yet i did...i'm very confused. anyone know what's going on here?

You better hurry up and sort that out. I need some spots free in PHX.

yeah, I replyed back to the email saying it might be a mix-up. i donno if it could free up a spot, but here's to hoping...so this did not happen to anyone else?

was it innapproiate for me to ask for clarification? i was very nice, just said i was very confused.

Sorry if that came off harsh, it was meant as a joke.

Yes rejections went out as well.. maybe you should call them, I assume if you made phx, you probably made Tucson as well, maybe they have the wrong email on file.

No no, don't listen to him, Phx is a great campus, go to Phx. 🙂 Furthermore, if you choose Tucson campus, you think of deferring to go tour the world? 🙂 PLZ FOR THE LOVE OF GOD!

i'm really just confused as to why i heard from phoenix when i preferenced tucson. i for sure want to go to tucson. i just hope they're not offended by me asking why they sent me that.

so i just got an email back from tara (at 8:30 pm...now that's dedication!) she cleared it all up for me. she's so nice.

Do you mind telling us what she said? Was it a mistake or did people get dual acceptances who preferred Tucson? Does your turning down a spot on the Phoenix list mean that there is now another open spot there?

thanks

unfortunately, i'd always only been on the tucson list. so, no spots opening on my account.

I'm at a pretty descent spot on the Tucson and Phoenix waitlist but I have been accepted to UCLA and will more than likely attend school there. That should free up some spots on the waitlist! Wish you all the best of luck!

Wow, those are impressive stats...and you didn't get accepted anywhere else those first two application cycles?

33MCAT, 3.85GPA, massive amounts of extracurriculers, lived in AZ my whole life. Rejected outright from Tuscon and PHX. This is extremely frustrating.

What is your waitlist number if you don't mind me asking? Thanks for opening up a spot!
