Come on when will they get to 15??? Two full days of no movement is making me crazy. And yea I think people should def wait till May 16 and see where we are at with regards to both wl before making any moving decisions, I mean this undergrad year isn't even over yet. At least wait till summer vac starts.

Ughhhh who wants to help me write a 30 page honors thesis? 🙁

Actually, it is very likely. The administration convinced the board of regents to lift the longstanding policy that UA would remain in the lowest 25% of public schools tuition wise, leaving them free to raise it as high as they would like. The tuition increase of 6,000 was information sent over the entire listserv, to every current medical student. I'm not saying its correct, but it is more likely than not.

Hey spicy angel, are you going to choose Tucson over Phx? I see you are already from the Phx area and planning on going to 2nd Look in Phx with such a low waitlist number in Tucson. Thanks for letting us know when they get to 15! Hopefully you get the call tomorrow!

Cuddy, I'm leaning towards Phoenix because I know more about the area and the school...but I have only been to Tucson once for the interview. Haha. Since I can't tour the campus without an acceptance, I will be spending some time in Tucson over the next two weeks to familiarize myself with the area and hopefully make a decision off that.

And sorry guys, no call yet 🙁

Have you been accepted to Tucson but your first choice is Phoenix?

Yes I was accepted in Tucson and waitlisted in Phoenix... So cross your fingers :xf:for me Cuddy420, because If I get the call from PHX there will be an immediate movement in the Tucson WL!!

nonlocality, you are absolutely right... it is anxiety talkto an extent. I hate the uncertainty that comes along with this process. :meanie:
I guess I will wait until the end of the month to start taking baby steps toward Tucson!

For those of you who are choosing UA because its a "cheap" medical school just wanted to let you know there is talk of a 6,000 tuition increase for next year, with subsequent increases to come.

Tuition was one factor that I took into consideration when deciding between UA and Illinois, the other school I got accepted to. So compared to their OOS rate of >$62,000/year for tuition alone, yeah UA is still cheap!

Well as soon as I hear from Tucson (ideally mid-end May) then there will be an immediate movement in the Phx WL! If you were a great enough candidate to get accepted to Tucson, I would really think you are in a good place on Phx's WL...Good luck to us both getting our prefered campus!

I think we need to give the tucson adcom folks lots of hugs/kisses for giving us one of the most humane and transparent waitlist processes possible.

Everyone is ranked and they are open about telling us what waitlist number they are currently at. It is easy to follow and it is easy to model with trendlines so we can predict what might happen.

So mucho hugs and kisses tucson adcom folks.

To get an accurate prediction we need to measure waitlist movement. But I think we need to restrict ourselves to twice a week (weds mornings and friday afternoons) this splits the work week roughly in two.

Our trendline projects out across 7 day weeks but there really is not much happening on sat and sunday. So getting a monday waitlist number really means we are getting more of a friday updated number which has little value. It just feeds our anxiety when it doesn't move. So typically wed's number is below/at our trendline and fridays is above it. Most often the net effect is the trendline does not need to move.

And there are other factors at play. Since we are dealing with discrete/quantized events we are not able to measure a fraction of a waitlist offer. Also these are shot type events that are not occurring at a constant pace but are somewhat haphazard.

So lets not stress out over a weeks worth of slow waitlist movement instead let the trendline smooth out this data over many weeks and help us predict the future.

Hey all - I was offered an acceptance into Tucson at 9am this morning...so we are at #15!

As a sidenote for everyone who will have to choose between campuses, they are only offering a week to decide instead of the two weeks previously given. I would assume this is to allow the waitlist to move quicker.

Good luck everyone!

Congratz spicy. So those accepted to both campuses only have a week since they are notified to choose instead of having to decide by May?

The decision in May is if you have multiple acceptances at several different schools; technically, the Phoenix and Tucson campus are two medical schools of the one University of Arizona College of Medicine (which originally gave two weeks to decide if you got acceptances at both Phoenix and Tucson).

Congrats spicy! Keep us updated on your thoughts on both campuses this week and see you at 2nd Look tomorrow!

**Does anyone want to call Tucson this afternoon to see if they make it past 15 today? I also wonder what the impact might be of 2nd Look at both campuses this weekend. Maybe a good group of people will be making decisions next week based on their experiences this weekend to stay or leave AZ/Tucson/Phx...

Congrats, Spicy! The one-week decision should make the waitlist go faster, so hopefully the rest of you will hear sooner rather than later. I wonder, for nonlocality's figures, if they did that last year...

Should we call Friday mornings, since the Friday afternoon calls have not been answered?

No one else has to call today the 15 number is fine, congrats spicy.

I think since hereicome has been having such great success calling up on friday at 3 pm we should let him keep going.

Actually, if you can try calling around 1:30-2:00 it might work out better.

PS hereicome:
"Four years and 80 grand to cut people open with a knife"
For that price can you at least sew them back up?

Does anyone know where Tucson's waitlist ended for the last few years? I know they went into the 60's last year but I'm wondering about the years prior.

Thanks 🙂

Go back to the previous page of this thread, and you'll find attached graphs on certain nonlocality's posts. The graph has 2007's data, but sorry, no 2006 or 2005.

View attachment 12536Using spicy's lucky number 15 for this morning, here is the new waitlist plot.

Data Analysis-
We are right on our current trendline, so things are still looking positive for beating 08's waitlist number. I think we can trust what this trendline is predicting.

Estimate-
I am sticking with my last few estimates of a maximum waitlist number of 50-63 by mid-june. Remember, while it is unusual for any mid/late july waitlist movement it can and has happened in the past.

For those who are obsessing daily over these numbers, I recommend that you chill-out and hug your teddy bear - that works for me.

Oh yes, I bumped into a first year med school friend today, and he told me about the tuition hike for this next year...$6000.

Does any one know if tuition for Phx and Tucson campuses are the same?

For those of you going to Phx's second look tomorrow, see you there!!

There's been a lot of speculation about tuition and the number of seats in Tucson so I thought I'd set the record straight (I'm an MSI btw).

Tucson has already accepted 115 students (Dean told me this). This does not include those that have deferred (about 4 or so). The maximum class size is 120. I really don't understand why the admissions people are giving you guys incorrect information.

We had a town hall meeting today, and the Dean told us that tuition will LIKELY be $21,618, plus $350 in fees, plus PERHAPS a $1060 fee that is might be charged to every student at the University of Arizona, med student or undergrad or anything. This all applies to every class of medical students. All said and done, we're likely to all be dropping 23k a year for med school, which is more than expected, and I'm still kinda bitter about it.

If you guys have any other questions, ask and I'm sure me or someone else can answer it.

I thought second look was on Friday, April 10th...or that just the day everyone is hoping for WL movement?

Wow, this is certainly a newsflash to us. I wonder why the admissions people haven't told us about it. 😕

Phx actually has a 3-day 2nd Look starting tomorrow night. Tomorrow night is a student mixer, friday is tours, activities, etc. and saturday is a community service event. Tucson's is 1 day only I think.

My thanks goes out to all of our brethren in the class of 2012 that have taken the time to keep us all informed about our upcoming class size and tuition increases.

Thanks again.

Yeah thanks for all the updates MS1s!! I had a mini heart attack when I saw the $6000 tuition increase. As many have pointed out, such an increase would still make UA tuition relatively cheap in comparison to other schools but I wasn't expecting such a drastic increase.
And of course, thanks to nonlocality for constantly taking the time to make the plots 🙂

Although my own self-interest is encouraging me to talk about how terrible and outrageous this increase in tuition is going to be (since I'm on the wait list and it may deter some acceptees from chooing UA COM :meanie:), there will be a lot of these same types of increases elsewhere. ASU's grad school, at least the degree program I'm applying to, is planning on adding $4,000 in fees per year. That said, I'm not enitrely sure if this is mainly an Arizona thing - since education was hit especially hard by losing money it thought it'd be getting - or if it's pretty much the same nationally.

UIllinois's OOS tuition went up about $5,000 to $62,000 this year. Of course, IL is in just as bad of a financial state as AZ is, if not worse.

Thanks Krosburg! You're sooo helpful!!!

Oh yes, and in my last post I meant I "kind of" felt like the smilies not "can of"...it was late and I was tired. But I promise...yo hablo ingles 🙂

!!!EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!! good luck y'all! see some of you 2morrow!

I called this morning at 9:30 since we have had bad luck on fridays so far... still #15. But maybe someone can call around 1pm to see if there is better news

Here is today's latest waitlist plot based on a 15 for today.

We are sailing through the doldrums as we await the strong winds of may.

Data Analysis-
Based on the info from out friends in the class of 2012 it is now clear that we are ahead of 08 numbers/pace due to an impending 09 class size of 115. So I have modified the plot to take out the extra numbers (red) that would have been associated with a later move up to 115.

Currently we are a little below our trendline but not enough to move it. So we will see what next week's numbers bring.

Data Estimate-
With no change to our trendine, I am sticking to my 50-63 estimate.

I am still upbeat and think we are going to have a better year than 08. But we will need to wait several weeks to see how our second trendline looks before we know how much better.

I just got back from Second Look Tucson, I was really impressed. I just wanted to come in here and mention something Dr. Malan said in regards to the drop in board scores. He said that the reason the scores fell so much is due in part to the new curriculum, but also because at that time UA was in the habit of accepting a fairly large amount of students who were considered a high "academic risk" (low MCAT/GPA). His reasoning for accepting these students was because they had such a good breadth of experience they felt that they would make good doctors even though they weren't as academically qualified. He said that due to the drop in board scores last year, they no longer make a point to accept students who are such high academic risks though. Also it was mentioned today that our class will have 115 students.

LOL!!!!

Hey man, I appreciate all the info.... it was very helpful and I think it will have a significant impact on my decision!
I couldn't go to Ben'z because I wanted to be back in Phoenix before 9
I am so glad I got the chance to attend 2nd look!
looking forward for August!

C'mon nonlocality... with the confirmation of 115 students this year, just bump it up to 50-64 for my sake. Even if it's just to make me feel better. Haha.

Thanks. 🙂

Thanks for this info merryjoulton. I'm glad to hear they've bumped up the class size. So the rumors of accepting a lot of non-trad/lots of ECs/low stat students was true for '06/'07... Wow.

Is that why they added a minimum MCAT score to receive an interview?? I wonder if the reasons mentioned today for the failed board scores is the opinion of just one person, or everyone on the committee?

Dr. Malan is the vice dean of academic affairs, so I would guess his opinion is indicative of the administration/committee as a whole to some extent.

Went to 2nd look at the Phoenix campus on Friday-- it was great to see the new class and to just learn more about the curriculum.

The Phoenix campus staff and faculty really did a great job in highlighting the school and I feel like they made the extra effort in making us feel welcome. Many of the current 1st and 2nd year med students were also there which was good. I was a little concerned about the average age of the classes, but it seems like our incoming class was a little bit younger than the other two, for better or worse I guess depending on what you're looking for. How the finalized class will look is anybody's guess I suppose though.

This was also a great touch pulling into the parking lot of the medical campus, snapped it with my phone-- a small gesture that was in keeping with the larger feeling that the students aren't treated as "just a number". The funny thing is, it seems like one of its major assets, the smaller class sizes, will soon be something to be touted by the Tucson campus since the Phoenix campus expects to enroll 150 students eventually.
