Hello,

I just signed up for this site cause I checked your comments once in a while. I got an email this morning from Tucson and Phoenix this pm. Sweet because I was rejecto last year 🙁. Apparently I have to relinquish one admission within two weeks, so at least one more spot is opening. Good luck!

p.s. when I signed up for sdn just now, they asked me this The plasma form of this element is found in the Sun: .....?

I'm pretty sure I missed it, but they let me in anyways. Do any of yall know?

Congratulations Pianosn!

Anyone else hear from Phoenix apart from Pianosn?

So, I got through to Phoenix this afternoon. The only information I could get about the acceptances so far was that "45% of the spots have been offered".

When I asked about further release dates, I was told that there was no information available.

I don't think they're trying to be nefarious - it seems more like Phoenix's release schedule is closer to a traditional 'rolling' process, where they let the spots out as a trickle when they're ready instead of in large waves. That's just an assumption.

Either way, it looks like both schools have sent out around half of their spots.

Thank you frontalrelease. I will keep my fingers crossed!

Congrats to Pasdechat, Incense, and Regnar.

I am incredibly jealous.

This is what Dr Organic wrote on Jan 6 :
Heard from Phoenix yesterday (jan 5th). Don't know how many emails they sent out though. I'm going to tell them no (I want to stay in Tucson), so that spot's going back up for grabs. Maybe I should auction it off to help pay for tuition....😀😀

Is he a troll?

You people are so incredulous!! I suppose you'll find out if I'm real or not in August, huh?

In lieu of proof, I copied this from my email. I don't know WHY I got this on the 5th, I was as surprised as you guys seem to be. Maybe they meant to send out a rejection and it was all an accident 😛.

College of Medicine - Phoenix Admissions

Dear <Drorganic>,

The University of Arizona College of Medicine-Phoenix, in partnership with Arizona State University is pleased to offer you a position in the class of 2013.

I wish everyone else tons of luck in the next few waves. I can't wait until Second Look when I can meet all my classmates, even if you don't believe I exist 😉 And congrats to those who just found out, thats really exciting!

Congrats Dr. Organic! I will be going to the Tucson 2nd look. Anyone else?

45% of the incoming class huh? So they have accepted about 10 students or so 😉

Congrats Dr. Organic! I will be going to the Tucson 2nd look. Anyone else?

I will also...can't wait! When is it exactly? I'm mailing my letter of acceptance tomorrow, so I don't have much info yet.

So besides the fact that half the spots have been offered, do we know anything else about PHX? Do they literally just send them out one at a time? I wish I just knew more about PHX.

And do we have any info on howany seats are actually accepted? I know that several people will/have declined U of A's offer for a different school. I wish I knew how many seats were up for grabs, not just how many offers have been made.

Yeah - I'm sure that's something the committee wishes they could provide too. I'm not exactly sure what the timeline is for students when they're notified that they've been accepted to inform their school of their decision. I guess we'll know when we see how many people get in off the waitlist.

But that doesn't help my neuroticism, anxiousness, and suspense for now!!!

Oh medical school admissions, how I hate thou...

I am interviewing for both campuses next week...it's my second go at this. I'm not sure what my chances are considering it's so late in the application process, does anyone have suggestions as to what my approach should be? My stats are average for mcat, gpa, my ec's are the bright spot on my resume (loads of research, publication, lots of clnical volunteer, overseas hospital/public health internship in third world country, good lors from my PI's too).

So I just found this forum today and am excited to have a place to vent my anxiety. My stats and experiences are above average, but not astronomical. My interviews went really well, with my Phoenix interviewer going as far as to say she was pretty sure I was going to get into at least one of the schools; I was pretty excited about that because she actually had read my file and even had it sitting on the desk during the interview. But I haven't heard back yet.

So my question is, how much of the roughly 1/2 of the positions already filled do we think will be vacated because the students will wind up going elsewhere? From what I can gather those are the "all-star" applicants who are very likely to get into schools such as Harvard, Stanford, Penn, Johns Hopkins, etc...

Hi all,

I am so glad to be part of this because the anxiety is killing me! I had my second interview in Tucson last week Tuesday, and I still have not received an email saying that my file is complete! GAH! I emailed Tanisha, and she said that she'll email me once my file is complete...but it already should be...

Gah! :scared:

Just be yourself. The interviewers generally just want to make sure you can keep your cool for ~25 minutes of 1 on 1 interaction without saying something crazy or making yourself look arrogant. Is there a reason you're interviewing so late? Since UA has implemented a type of rolling admissions process this year, it probably would have been in your best interest to have interviewed a bit earlier considering many spots have already been filled.

Medman - How do you feel now that you are in medical school...do you feel very stressed out about making a stellar application for residency or is the overall atmosphere a little less intimidating?

Proteinpowda - I think I want to go the Carib. now after how much it sucked not to get an acceptance last week. Are you still seriously considering that route?

DrOrganic - Can you tell us how you made yourself one the most desirable candidates for the UA?

Mastering the curriculum is probably the biggest stress which I guess ties into residency. I don't think I stress that much about matching a good residency though for two reasons: First, it's several years down the road. Second, in almost every residency specialty there are more slots available than positions filled. This doesn't mean you can just slack off once you get accepted but as long as you work hard during medical school you should be able to match somewhere in a residency of your choice. Match rates are high for US seniors, the hard part is getting into med school.

Remember your file is complete when the admissions office receives all your post interview forms. Some people take longer than others to turn those forms in. So just because you interviewed, doesn't mean every thing may have been sent to the office. Befriend the admissions people lol. Tanisha will email you when she has all the pieces. Are you sure that you aren't missing any LOR's, grades or any other pieces.

Hey, a few of you have requested some stats for accepted applicants. I have just created a profile on MDApplicants.com which you can get to through my profile on this. So if you are one of the ones who would like to see stats, please feel free. I really hope to meet you all on 2nd look day. And keep your heads up, there's still a long way to go before its over. I wish you all the best!

Just stay positive Mathlink! And it really is hard to tell how many spots will be moved on the waitlist due to applicants giving up their spots. Phoenix didnt release how many waitlist positions they went through. Tucson went through 65 I believe. But last year was different since they only did one batch in early March. So many students had already accepted spots at other schools. Phoenix has also never done the wave release that both schools are doing currently. And every year varies with the number and type of applicants applying. Soooo basically it varies every year. But stay positive!

I am sure I have turned in all of the information that they need post-secondary application. All transcripts were sent out way back in October...and the LORs got attached to my AMCAS due to the pilot program. So, everything should be in place. I have not gotten any emails from Tanisha or Ann about missing materials. I would also imagine they make sure they have my stuff before offering me interviews. I also updated my file with my Fall 2008 grades.

It's a waiting game. *deep sigh* I hate this part.

Wannabe - I was refering to the letter and form that the interviewer completes following each interview. Those are then turned into the ADCOM office. Some people do them on the spot and some take time to write them out. This is for the interviewer to complete and its up to them to turn it in, but I think they have a week to do it. Just fyi that might be the prob with your file. But maybe call Monday and double check just in case.

Thanks for posting your profile. Your comments on your profile give me hope and you certainly deserve the acceptance! Best of luck in med school and pray for us who are still waiting!

Hey I'm still positive! I'm just engaging in some fruitless speculation to keep my mind occupied until the second week of February comes around!🙂

Thanks, Krosburg! I appreciate your input. Let's hope I hear soon.

For those who applied this round, no additional transcripts were needed for the UA other than the AMCAS, right? The secondary application didn't request transcripts. Also, did everyone just have their LORs uploaded to their AMCAS pilot program and then provided three names on their secondary?

Now I am getting paranoid about my file...

Thanks for typing it up, Regna. Congrats on new fatherhood AND med school acceptance! What a great year for you 🙂

My anxiety is pretty much out of control now... I'm gonna have to start calling. Anyone have any tips for calling the school for info?

Why would you call? We already know everything there is to know for now. Did you know that you have 2 weeks to hold your acceptance...but that 2 weeks does not start until you hear from the second school (Phx or Tuc). So, we just have to be patient.

PS - Thanks Regna. Congrats!!!!!

So, at the Phx interview, the med student kind of shivered when he recounted the neuro block. Then, I just read up some alluding to the difficulties of neuro. So, I ask: What's so hard about the neuro block? What's it really like?

I can tell you this: one of the neurobiology professors at ASU does a few neuro lectures at the PHX campus. I took his class, so I can only imagine it being similar material, but much harder and with more of a clinical approach. Other than that, I don't know. Of all my undergrad courses, that neuro class was one of the roughest...cool, but rough. A LOT of biochem-pathways and what not. What made it rough was the pace and requirement to know so many different proteins and their actions...and of course, all sorts of combinations of pathways tha cause different reactions in these proteins. A few of you posting on this board may have taken the same class and know what I am talking about. If you are one of the ones who sailed through, I envy your intelect 🙂 hehe.

Here's hoping the clinical version is more digestable.

It's interesting material but the volume just totally knocks the wind out of you. Not sure what else to say about it other than it is probably the hardest thing (academically) I have done thus far. Don't let it intimidate you though, if you're good enough to get into med school you're good enough to get through neuro.

Its hard not to shiver from neuro it seemed difficult at the time but now when I look back at it, it wasn't so bad. It is challenging and time consuming but I think we were all pretty good about staying on top of it.

It is difficult just because its a topic most of us have never seen before and learning how the brainstem works was just mind boggling at first. The final was easier than I expected and I was pleased how it all worked out and that says a lot considering I consider myself a very average student. So don't worry about it until you get there and when you do, just don't get behind~!

Ditto for me.....

One also might add that the Tucson block director, Dr Nolte, also wrote the book that a large portion of the medical schools in the country use for neuro. And he wrote a review book, a study guide, a pictorial atlas, his own quiz website with lecture notes, his own patient movies, and his own animations. Needless to say, it was hard but do able. So many lectures that didnt seem to bad if you stayed up on them.

So the next release is sometime during the week of the 9th? Any ideas that it will be on Friday the 13th? Eeek

Hello everyone,

I'm happy to be joining this group and look forward to starting med school at the UofA this fall. I sent my affidavit/confirmation of acceptance yesterday, and just wanted to know what's next in the process and what I should expect? I would appreciate any feedback!

😀:hello::hello::help:

Congrats on your acceptance! You may not hear much of anything from UA until it gets a little closer to when school starts. They usually send out info about financial aid, vaccinations, the "bridge" program, and everything you need to have done before school starts around May. So until then, my advice is to just sit back and enjoy life.

In addition to Medman, I would say sleep, and have fun!

Medman - How do you feel now that you are in medical school...do you feel very stressed out about making a stellar application for residency or is the overall atmosphere a little less intimidating?

I applied to St. George's twice...and am embarassed to say I was rejected by them twice. They are the Harvard of the Caribbean and going there is a great option! The campus is amazing (www.sgu.edu) and most of your clinicals will be in NY with the NYU, Cornell and Einstein people. You also have the option of going to England for your rotations which I think would be a great experience (see how medicine is practiced under socialized conditions with more emphasis on physical histories rather than tests). And there are some cool electivs you can do during your basic sciences like going to Prague for clinicals. They have on-campus housing, accredation in 50 states and with their new clinical agreeements you can possibly do all of your clinicals in one hospital vs. having to jump around.
So if you want to go Caribbean that's your best although most expensive option.

Since I didn't get in there and most of my advisors advised going offshore with my GPA I applied to Ross to try and start in September. Ross is the same thing as going to St. Georges except for the trimester system (they start 3x a year, January May and September while St. Georges is just January and September). I applied too late for September and was accepted for January. Then I decided to give UA one more go and have deferred it until May. You also spend a pre-clinical semester in Miama and they just opened a new campus dedicated to PBL in the Bahamas if you want to go there for your third and fourth semester.
So yes if I don't get in anywhere (and I applied to Midwestern and NYCOM as well) I'll be headed there in May. There are pros and cons to it. It's definetly tougher to get a coveted residency spot...but only if you're looking for orthopedics or something along those lines. There are plenty of students from Ross and St. Georges that place into EXCELLENT programs for internal medicine, pediatrics, anesthesia, etc.

American University of the Caribbean is another option. Like the other two mentioned it has 50 state accredation and full federal loans but the match list isn't as impressive as the other two nor is it as well known.

And honestly...the whole Caribbean stigma is a misnomer...I've met quite a few American med students who were jealous of how well the Caribbean people knew their stuff. They know how to teach the boards. And with Ross you're pretty much on the island for 16 months straigh and then it's back to the US for 23 months of clinicals.

So here's the question you need to ask yourself:
It's going to be tougher to get that really good residency spot unless you're shooting for Peds or something...but do you want to spend an extra year proving you're qualified to enter medical school or graduate a year sooner and spend that proving you're a good doctor?

I'm thinking about looking into applying to Caribbean schools and D.O. schools if I don't get accepted this year. Like Protein, it is hard for me to balance the pros and cons of reapplying each year till I get an M.D. school, or go to the Caribbean or D.O. I don't expect to go to any out of state schools this year, my app was submitted very very late (of the 4 community colleges i've technically taken classes at, 1 decided to screwup my transcript request for a LONG time). If not UofA, I'm hoping to get my application in ASAP next cycle.

I too will be working while I reapply. This 30k master's program has pretty much bankrupted me 😡 Already prepping for the MCAT retake and getting new LOR's. BUT you are absolutely right, there is still Feb and the waitlist afterward. Good luck everyone :xf:
