I would characterize his comments as skepticism rather than smack. He just seemed a little skeptical of some of the experience of the basic science professors who had never taught medical students before. He didn't think they couldn't do a fine job, just that some of them had never done it before. He recommend Tucson because of the experience of the faculty, not because he doubted Phoenix's ability or dedication.

I thought it was ironic last year when a newly-hired Phoenix faculty member was grilling me about my clinical experiences during the interview, he/she had zero clinical experience her/himself, having been a young post-doc researcher, based on the given bio. At the end of the interview, he/she said I could use more clinical experience. 🙁 The reality was I did have the experience, I shouldn't have downplayed it and should have sold myself better. I wonder if it was one of his/her first interviews as an interviewer?

The man I talked to wasn't an interviewer. It was one of my good friend's father-in-law. He has been a professor of medicine for 20 years. I'm pretty sure he liked me and was mostly just trying to get me to choose Tucson, should that be a decision I have to make. I don't think he really has anything against Phoenix or the faculty there.

Tryptofan, it sounds like you've had a tough experience with a brand new Phoenix faculty member. My Phoenix interviewer last year (a young PhD fresh off his post-doc) asked me about different specialties that interested me, and when I mentioned Neurology, he started grilling me about how to treat extensive nerve damage. WTF? Like I learned that as a Nutritional Sciences undergrad. I felt totally rattled after that. Maybe I just shouldn't have mentioned specific fields.

Are interview horror stories an appropriate topic to keep our minds occupied while we wait for next Monday? Or is there another SDN thread for that?

I am a staff for COMPhx and we recently received an email/memo of the latest students that got accepted here, for the month of Feb. I am not sure if it is public info, I am guessing it is but message me if you want the list of accepted students....

I had really great interviews. My interviewers saw things the way I did, politically, etc. etc. I loved these people. I am scared to continue with another application because I don't think luck will strike twice. So, are we supposed to send thank you letters? I've heard mixed things.

After the 23rd I am going to get myself over to a nursing home and really try for the CNA job.

By the way, I spoke to a UA doctor and she said that when she was an internal medicine resident, the schedule was 36 on, 12 off, repeat. OMG we have it so good now.

So, why did they remove the "community physician" from the interview process?

I don't usually respond to nonsense like this, but since I was going to log off forever, before witnessing all the collective anxiety and celebration alongside heartbreak next week, I thought I might as well go out now and go out with a little fire.

ibcdude, if you are telling the truth (which I'd bet the ranch that you're not), it's seriously unethical. If you're just kidding around, it doesn't really demonstrate integrity of character, does it? Either way, it's a loser move. I don't think it would take too long for someone to identify you in the applicant pool based on info in your previous posts: 3.69 BCMP GPA, B+ in statistics, work at Arizona Phoenix Hospital, 4 West Oncology, research work that might lead to later publication. Good Luck! Perhaps, if there is any justice, you opened up a slot for someone more deserving.

I'm outta here for good!

An early congrats to those who get the acceptance by end of Feb or through the waitlist. My empathies to those who don't get accepted; life goes on regardless.

UA COM sends out the names of those who have been recently accept to a bunch of places, including the pre-med advising offices of UA, ASU, and NAU. These are courtesy memos. They are a list of previously notified applicants and not an early release of the names for Monday.

ibcdude - How many students have been accepted?

I agree ibcdude. Since I'm not accepted yet I don't really care about the names of the people, but it would be interesting to know how many seats have been awarded so far. I'm guessing almost all of them.... ?

Do you think that different people on the adcom see our file every time they meet so we can have a good chance of being viewed favorably by a new group? I was thinking, and it makes me nervous thinking the same group could keep passing over my file each time. 3 days a way...im so anxious. :scared:

You got a real Phx card.....you're the last one that should have any anxiety about Monday.

Given that there were people that got accepted and never saw any card, I don't think the card means much.

I wondered about how the files are reviewed, too. I hope they do a good job of re-assessing each time. I interviewed within the first week at both schools and I hope my file didn't end up like this...

I can't quote anyone on this but I'm pretty sure it's randomized as to who sees what files each time the meet. UA seems to do a lot to make sure that no biases can occur during the admissions process.

Hey:

So who is going out on Monday? I figure I HAVE to:
Either
1) I get my letter and have to celebrate. It was my birthday wish and I blew out my candles in one try so it has to come true.
2) Or since I didn't put 25 candles on cake + 1 for luck it won't come true and I won't get anything and have more waiting to do.

So either way I go out to celebrate or out of sorrow. I'm not sure if it's good or bad that my interview at Midwestern AZCOM is Tuesday. Maybe I'll get into UA and get to cancel it.

Anyway I wanted to throw this out there...
Sadly I'm not feeling too positive about Monday.
Why?
Well if I was on the adcom here was how I would structure the acceptances.

The first batches that went out were small. But not everyone interviewed yet. So say you had 50% of people interview so you hand out 30-40% of acceptance. You guess you're going to have a pretty even applicant pool for interview dates (though many of us would hazard to say the stronger applicants get their stuff filed early and interview earlier possibly...or maybe that's complete BS). Then subsequent batches went out as a greater percentage of applicants files became complete. So I'm guessing that most of the acceptance offers coming out now would be for those that interviewed later in the cycle? And most of us that did not get in when we got the initial look are hoping for a wait-list?

I'm not sure though? When did UA stop interviewing and when was the last set of files made complete?

Yeah, it does not look good. But then again, 30 apps (+ 7? Phx) is not an insignificant number. I doubt that many people interviewed so late, and if they did, they probably aren't that competitive. Whatever happens we should party on Monday no matter what. Tuesday is the time to pick ourselves up by the bootstraps and reassess. I for one am going to work on making a much better app - luckily I don't have to improve my stats, just my experiences. The bonus is, UA loves reapplicants. A person who works under the chief of a UA department told me this.

But, to lessen (or increase?) my anxiety I drifted over to the blog put out by Panda Bear, M.D. For those of you not in the know, it is probably the best blog out there. Anyway, he stopped blogging but just put up a new post within the last couple of months. He is a 4th year ED resident and he said he would not do it again (the strain on his wallet and family was too much). I just can't explain why I want to keep pursuing it, but I do. Does anyone have Tanisha's email address? The one for [email protected] goes to Ann, and she is not the person who sits down with you to discuss your application's shortcomings. :xf:

Yeahhhh about that, lol. the only thing that improved was my MCAT and maybe the master's but I feel like neither of those really helped. Oh well. I will be taking a final during Monday's projected 9 AM release date, and then probably in Vegas with my bf when the waitlist/rejections come out. At this point, I've mentally placed UA out of my mind and have already started making plans for student loans, housing, etc. at AZCOM. Although I'd come here in a heartbeat if accepted off the waitlist if I make it that far!! Good luck everyone :luck:

I'll drink to that! I'm going to a modest mouse (favorite band ever) show on Wednesday, so that will be my celebration or misery party.

I sent you Tanisha's email in a private message.

So our fates are probably already decided, with the lucky names sitting on a list somewhere in the COM for the weekend. That thought makes me antsy.

So have we figured out exactly when the alternate list is coming out?

I think we've all got the same chance of getting in now, as we have for the last few months. I bet the UA considers your strength as an applicant over your interview order when it comes to decisions. Meaning, I think they made offers to other applicants earlier because they were both a good match for the program (decent stats, etc.), and most likely to accept the offer.

UA's process seems to be pretty black-boxish - so I don't think it'll do any good counting yourself out yet. The waitlist will (hopeufully) run deep, and maybe some of us will get some summer surprises, if not an acceptance on Monday.

On a personal note, I will be happy to have some finality to this year's application cycle, regardless of the outcome. Applying has shaped/controlled the majority of the last few years of my life, and it'd be good to atleast have a little time when I'm not waiting anxiously for something completely out of my control.

Best of luck to everybody, I hope to meet you all 🙂

So have we figured out exactly when the alternate list is coming out?

By looking at last year's thread, the waitlist came out 9 days after the only round of acceptances. Not sure if it will be that way this time though...but it sounds about right.

For what it's worth, I was at the med school on Friday, and there's a huuuuuuuge stack of admissions envelopes ready to be mailed out on Monday (apparently the largest group). So look out for a small squarish envelope from the Tucson campus :luck:

One of those is mine...I can feel it. Keep keepin' it real rkells...and good luck in med school. I'm still kind of in shock from that Kelly song you posted.

Wait, snail mail letters? I thought they just emailed...

Do you think the waitlist and rejection pile have already been determined?

I just got word a manuscript I'm on was accepted, but wondering whether it's too late at this point to submit an update for my file. Hmm....

At this point, all of the files have been reviewed. I see no reason why the waitlist would not be complete, but you could always get that info to the office as soon as you find out that your email is empty tomorrow....it can't hurt.

Good luck everyone!!!!!!!!!!! However, I must point out that there is a whopping 6% chance of Tucson admission tomorrow (30/470).

I don't know whether the waitlist has already been determined or not, but I'd definitely give it a shot with the update. It can just be an informal email, not necessarily a full update letter.

A U of A student I met at an interview told me she had talked to Tanisha about the number of acceptances they're releasing tomorrow. Tanisha told her there were quite a bit (something like 70). Se said this was because a lot of people that have been offered acceptances have already declined. Can anyone verify this? It was the first I had heard about it and seems to be contrary to what everyone else is saying.

That actually makes sense because a lot of people had to accept either Phx or Tuc in 2 weeks. So, probably 20 ppl gave up Tuc for Phx. Then, I guess it makes sense that the stellar applicants got into better schools, so that might bring another 15 out. Now, on top of our original 30, we have 65 or 70. Furthermore, the whole class has to be filled tomorrow morning since it is the last acceptance round. Okay guys, the odds just got better. I just ate a pint of ice cream....make the madness stop.

If that's true.... there is one good thing and not so good thing.

Good - More people will have some finality about their lives tommorow.

Bad - Those of us that get wait-listed will have have slimmer chances since there will presumably less wait-list movement. Wasn't it like 70 people last year?

That's why the waitlist ran so deep last year...they gave the acceptances all at once. Tanisha said it was really hectic due to that. This year it will probably run to 35.

True, but we'll still end up with about the same amount of people being accepted... just fewer people accepted from the "waitlist" since people who would have been waitlisted are bypassing the waitlist.

Which is a very good thing, whichever way you look at it. Although I wouldn't object to it, being a borderline waitlist-waiter would be miserable. Good point.

Wow, that changes alot now if it will be around 70! That means that if I do not get an email tomorrow, my hopes for a waitlist acceptance will diminish and I'll realize I was most likely rejected. I see this as a good thing, because mentally I would really like to move on with my life. I, and everyone around me, is tired of me obsessing about this. This is all coming to an end thank goodness and either way I'll be so excited for any of us that post great news tomorrow! Good luck guys...

Well if they are sending out 70 or so acceptances tomorrow, we definitely all have a better chance! Let's keep our minds positive for the night! Let's all try to get some sleep and not check our email right at 9:30. Good luck to everyone!!!

Yeah, if the rumor Kingfish heard is true... My sentiments exactly, Cuddy.

How come Cuddy does not have a cuddy buddy?

And I'm talking about Cuddy on House 🙂 When are her and House going to hook up already!?!?!?!? Out of curiousity is anyone more interested in studying infectious disease as a speciality b/c of the show?

I'm interested in ID since I love international health. I love the show House, but its never influenced me to choose a specialty. I like the drama and wit aspects of it more than the medical-related stuff. I prefer discovery health for medical-related stuff.

She claimed to have gotten it straight from the admissions office but she also thought that there would be another round of acceptances. I hope its true but it is second hand information.

I've quoted House Lines before
"Don't believe what you hear about me. I just stuff a sock in my pants."
Is one of my favorites.

Personally I found the season opener to the 4th season hilarious when Wilson stole House's guitar and sent ransom notes.

I hope it's true too.

rkells, are you out there? Did it look like there were 30 or 70 envelopes in the office on Friday? I think I'll just try to keep my hopes dim anyway, that way I won't have to go up just to go down again, or I will be extremely stoked.

A pint of ice cream is nothing. I've eaten two Little Caesar's pizzas in the last 24 hours by myself. And I'm supposed to be a Nutrition major. Anybody else have diet horror stories?😱

There appear to be seven u's. If each u = 10 envelopes, then yes, he probably saw 70. After all, a stack of 30 envelopes probably would only get an adjective like "tall" stack.

I agree 100%. Nice scientific critique of RKells' statement.

😀

Dear Ann and Tanisha,

Please send the emails now as a lot of us are online waiting impatiently.

Thank you.

lol, you crack me up, Invitro 🙂 My diet splurge tonight was a frozen custard/butterscotch/chocolate thing, and now, like some of you, I am using SDN for my nervous outlet.

I'm actually in St. Louis for an interview at Saint Louis Univ on Tuesday; if I get good news tomorrow it'll make for quite a worry-free interview experience.

Didn't you already get into Phx...St Louis better than Phx?

Two questions:

So should we expect the WL to be shorter than last year if many people have already declined their spot?

Also is Phx sending out acceptances tomorrow?

And the countdown begins: JUST about 10 hours left!
