I got my rejection letter. Since I was almost sad I allowed myself to have a Skinny Cow Ice cream Sundae. That was amazingly good. Mint flavor too. Yummmm!

Ok I lied. I was actually kind of happy. Now I know exactly where I'm going August 4th.

Now it's time to have a protein shake and send Midwestern $1000 for a deposit.
 
Hey all-

I checked on here once or twice before but never posted. Thought that I would throw out that as of this morning they have accepted 7 from the Tucson WL.

I really enjoyed reading this whole post-I'm way outa the loop being an engineering student and not knowing anyone applying. Lucky #13 on the WL for Tucson.. still pinching myself and agonizing over the wait!
 
They're just sending an email, right?
The wait is almost the worst part of the application process. There feels like endless waiting after every step. I really just want to know so I can get on with planning my life.
 
Rejected from Phoenix... and in upper 70s on Tucson waitlist.

Looks like I'm off to Midwestern-AZCOM. I'm not too disappointed today, glad to finally have some closure on this.

Best wishes and congratulations to all of you that were accepted to UA! I'm sure many of us will be doing our clinical rotations in the same Phoenix or Tucson hospitals, so all the best until we meet again.... 👍
 
It seems for the most part that most of the people on the tucson wl actually want to go to the tucson campus instead of elsewhere.
 
Rejected by Phx. It is a puzzle. I was accepted in Dec. by Tucson. They seemed to like me a lot. Phx NOT AT ALL 😉. But, as everyone has been saying, I'm glad that's settled. I'll plan on being in Tucson during the week and weekends back home in Tempe. Mucho driving! I did feel like Tucson was a a better fit for me. I felt great there, and nothing at all at Phx.

I agree, Tucson felt so much different! Much more like a community then Phoenix, and the students seemed much happier. That might just be the day I interviewed, but it really does make a difference in how you feel about the school.

Waitlisted. Not sure if that's a good or bad thing, since I wish this whole things was over with. I got rejected at Tucson, so at least there is still hope for an AZ school. Waitlist letter came at 4:14. No ranking is indicated. They just say that "we will keep you appraised of your status on the wait list" once I tell them I'd like to retain my spot on the wait list. Good luck to everyone still waiting!
 
Rejected this afternoon from Phx. Mid 70s WL at Tucson, WL at Creighton with acceptance contingent upon finishing with good grades this semester, DEFINITE acceptance at AZCOM. Despite being rejected twice here (or 3 times if you count both campuses), I'm going to be a doctor!!! Maybe I will see some of you in the fall? 👍

No matter how this turned out for you personally, in my book you are all doctor material.

You represent the top 10-15% of college graduates and when you add on top of that all the other things that have to be done to be considered viable med school candidates, you are all the best of the best. Be proud of yourselves.

Whether it works out for you this year or next, hang tough and keep swinging away it will happen.

For tracking the tucson waitlist lets keep going with our weds and friday afternoon measurements. Even though we got a 6 for last friday afternoon it could have easily been 7 later in the afternoon. So with two waitlist measurements a week we will be able to smooth out this effect.

All my best to those who leave us, at the end of the day we will all be part of the same profession.

Got my waitlist email this afternoon. Really wish it was ranked. Does anyone know how many Phoenix has on their waitlist?

I'm not planning on going to Phoenix, and once I get taken off the Tucson waitlist, I will remove myself from consideration at Phoenix. Just don't want to burn all my bridges before I actually get in. =)

Congrats to everyone that's waitlisted, or just had their decision to attend another school made a lot easier.

And best of luck to those of you that will be reapplying for next year!

I think it will be just fine saying UA-Phoenix. And for the non-medical people asking me, I don't think I will really care if they are struggling understanding that haha. Ok-I will call Wednesday before 12pm for WL update and hopefully MadEvans or someone waiting on Phx will keep us posted on progress over there. This is scary but exciting!

Yeah, Tara and everyone else in the office are going to learn to love me. UA-Phx is definitely my preference, so I'll keep everyone updated with whatever I find out. It may be very little info though since Phx seems to be pretty clandestine about the status of their waitlist as opposed to Tucson.
 
Got an acceptance to UofA Phoenix this morning!! I think I was really high on the waitlist and a few people dropped.. I'd still rather go to Tucson but I'm in the 50's so I'm not holding my breath. Anyone know if its bad to drop out of Phx to go to Tucson if I get in during the summer (ie after May 15th)..?
 
I'm on the Phoenix wait list too ... this is going to be a very intense wait, I really wish they would rank.
Does anyone have any advice for what wait list people should do while they wait? For example, should I go ahead like I never got accepted and prepare to re-apply, or not?

Yes, or you may end up wasting another year since AMCAS opens again in June and I don't recommend applying past September (unless your stats are amazing). But I hope you get in anyway!! Good luck :luck:

I had a friend do this at VCU. He was accepted there, but on the waitlist at UA. He got in to UA over the summer, so he just left VCU and went there instead.
He said they weren't pleased at VCU, but they weren't really angry or anything either. I think that happens sometimes; it's why they take the waitlist people so late. So it's do-able, just try not to burn any bridges or anything doing it.

Congratulations! We are in the same boat now as far as Phx acceptance and Tucson WL, but atleast we going to UA!! I have a feeling alot of people here will be getting nice surprises from Phx soon.

Data Analysis-
The first 09 trendline from our last plot is tracking very well with monday's (7) and wed's (9) numbers. With friday's next update I will produce a new plot that will estimate the second trendline for 09.

As mentioned before these plots are not only trying to predict the final outcome but also to show you, based on your own waitlist number, when/if you might expect to be contacted.

Those with high waitlist numbers can look at these 09 trendlines and make future plans about how/when they are going to move forward with some of their choices.

So there is no confusion, next time someone calls to get the waitlist number ask them if the number they give you means the next one up to be contacted or that they have already offered a spot to that number.

She told me specifically "we have accepted through number 10"-so I am pretty sure that means that # 11 is next one up to be contacted when the next spot opens up.
 
Just called. They still have accepted up to #10. But at least there has been movement!!! I'm getting excited 🙂 🙂

When we get down to the bitter end folks will want to know EXACTLY where we are.

I will post a new plot with friday afternoon's waitlist number and add in an estimate for the second treadline but this is starting to look like 2008 redux

Yes, they email you as well. Ann called me just after 8am, and told me she had just emailed me as well, and was putting together a packet of stuff that would go out in the mail later the same day.

Pretty much theres no other talk on this thread besides about waitlist movement, school acceptances and whatnot. I thought we could talk about something new maybe to take our minds off our wl positions. We all plan to be doctors and I really do believe that in my lifetime there will arise diseases we have never seen before (historical example being AIDS) and I feel that we are going to see giant leaps in medical care as technology pushes us foward. I mean within pretty much 100 years weve seen the rise of x-ray, MRI, CT; we've done things like surgical operations on the Organ no one used to touch (the heart). I think it would be neat if we all talked about maybe some of the new exciting procedures we've seen or heard of. Maybe where people feel medicine may end up 20 years from now. Just things like that. For example before my class today Im going to watch the webcast from NewYork-Presbyterian Children's Hospital of the first reported case in the world: Ex-vivo Resection and Multivisceral Autotransplant. The little girl is basically having almost all her abdominal viscera removed, then out of her body they are going to remove the previously thought "inoperable" tumors on her organs then they are going to have to replace them in a timely manner. One of the doctors stated it was kind of the stepping stones of oncology transplant mingling. Just thought I would share.

I read something interesting in EID the other day. In a couple of studies (one in Tucson one in Phx) they have found that about 25% of the people coming in with pneumonia are suffering from Valley Fever (forgot it's scientific name) and would beneft from anti-fungal treatment.

I also think that there will be new diseases, but more then that, I think the old killers like TB, flu, measles etc. are going to take an end-run around the last of the available meds and become an increasing problem. That's a no-brainer as it's already happening. But I'm going to interested to learn more in the years to come.
 
I wrote a novel of a response and I guess the site logged me out because I took too long and I lost it. Oh well. Anyway I wonder what strides are being taken by the pharmaceutical companies to combat the antibiotic resistance problem. Its kind of funny that certain ants are able to avoid this problem as they protect their fungi gardens. It would seem we need an efficient and effective way for our medicines to evolve just like thier combatants. Im interested to see where antivirals end up 15 years from now.
 
The future of medicine is a big question.

I think we can already see its outlines. It is the Star Trek vision.

It will be based on the convergence of several things.

Simplified, handheld sensing systems that can perform/combine the role of CAT/MRI/PET as well as remotely sense blood chemistry and other chemical processes in the body. Thus realtime instantly viewable diagnostic information for practioners to use in rendering treatment.

New, non-chemical, technologies designed to address disease like bio-engineered products that support/supplant/mimic immune system functions to fight disease plus stem cell created products which provide replacement for failed human parts.

A continuation of the trend toward minimally invasive surgical procedures that deliver faster healing and recovery, with remote delivery of invasive surgical treatments. Thus many of the present invasive surgical specialists will no longer be required to support treatment.

The other major driver will be cost. Nations and economies can bankrupt themselves by providing their people with the latest medical technologies and maximum treatment regimes for illness. Economic globalization will continue to even out the standard of living between the economic haves and have not’s. So affordable healthcare will become a more significant issue and wealth driven treatments will be lessened by the reduced number of upper/middle economic class people able to afford such treatments.

We will see a global trend toward nationalized medical care rationing systems with inherent individual based cost containment. I think this implies that surgical specialists that currently make $600k or more a year will become dinosaurs. Those professionals will see a flattening out of their incomes and its trending toward the income of family practice specialists.

I think someone should call later on in the day to allow some movement to hopefully occur.

New technologies and our continuing progression with genetics is actually quite a scary predicament as well. Whos to say that new breakthroughs are going to be entirely used for good. Its pretty well known that the Military-Industrial complex is about 30-40 years ahead of us. Eisenhower even warned us about it. But theres nothing stoping these people as well as other countries from attempting to make weapons from these new technologies. You can already see it as certain foreign governments attempt to create super-bugs. Not far in the future, in this country, lines will have to be drawn to prevent certain technologies from going too far. The line drawn for stem cells alone has held our country back and allowed for other countries to make significant advances with this technology. My point is restrictions on the scientists in this country dont apply to those of other countries and who really knows what kind of research is going on around the world. Scientists have already been able to mix animal with human DNA (anyone see the mouse that was growing a human ear a few years ago?) Now back to the military-industrial complex, whos technology surpasses that of the civilian world. Anyone who believes that they wouldnt attempt to use every technological advancement possible to create weapons is dilusional. The idea of humans with certain animal qualities Im sure has already been thought up, the quest to create a super soldier will drive evil uses of science. As the study of genetics progresses our military and other countries will do some pretty scary things and probably even to US citizens (think CIA testing drugs on US people).

I didnt mean to be sound so sci fi. This was actually a topic that me and one of my interviewers really got into. Id like to know what you guys think.

What Eisenhower warned us about was the undue influence of the US military-industrial complex and not the weapons that they create to protect us. Remember the people in that complex are Americans just like you.

That people have a tendency to sometimes do diabolically evil things and implement them during war time is a fact constantly born out in our historical record, particularly the last world war.

What is different now is that as we create ever more complex technologies, these technologies amplify the evil that can be done by us, to us.

For the past forty years humans have possessed the power to destroy nearly all life on this planet. That power has not been used but it still exists today. Perhaps that is enough of a threat to keep us from going over the edge with newer biological weapons.

The only hitch is that there are religious fanatics that believe that there is glory in death, by killing those who do not share their beliefs. The more killed the more glory. But you do not see their leaders strapping on suicide belts and blowing themselves up, so even in that realm perhaps there are limits to what they are willing to do.
