hey everybody, i was trudging through board prep threads and stumbled upon the ua one. 🙂 im a first yr at ua com phx...if u've got any questions about tuition increases, curriculum, school hrs, etc, feel free to ask. ill try and check this often. we're all super excited for the incoming class!

congrats to all whos gotten in and good luck to everyone whos on the waitlist!

So, how did the financial aid info come?? Was it email? Just people in Phx or Tucson as well?

Also, I can't register as it says I have a health hold, any idea what that means?

I think we should start a thread requesting sugar mommys/daddys. I could sure use one... anyone up for it? 😉

to clarify financial aid questions, (although I'm definitely not an expert) there's a breakdown of it at this link a little ways down: http://www.financial-aid.medicine.arizona.edu/howmuch.html

they give you around 21K to cover all non-tuition expenses, including books, health insurance, living/food expenses, etc. at what they consider a moderately comfortable style of living. Note its based on a 10month living expense because they expect you to get a job during summer months the first year... but who's gonna hire someone for 2 months?? Anyways, hope that helps.

I love this "unwritten prenup suggests" thing. 🙄

My logic is right, no? If the mere suggestion wasn't enough, giving her a ring better have been. 🙄 Haha.

Absolutely. I think it's a great deal as long as it's a reciprocal deal like mine was. I even have a title in mind... "Attention sugar mamas/daddys: invest in my medical education".

And thanks for the link. This was my favorite part:

Small expenses add up and will cost you big time in the long run. Do you really want to establish a habit of a $3.89 latte every day?

Those lattes can add up. They really should include caffiene in their list of expenses though.

I think that only Phoenix students have gotten their financial aid information so far--I haven't talked to anyone from Tucson who has yet.

The health hold is most likely because the university needs your MMR record before you are able to register. It can be a simple as faxing your medical record proof of MMR vaccination to Campus Health. There is more info on this on the Orientation website and also the Campus Health website.

I really hope there is some waitlist movement today...ANY waitlist movement actually. I'm starting to get really nervous.

Seriously I wonder what the heck is going on with this wl. I hope that not everyone who has been accepted to the tucson campus so far actually wants to attend there. But Im worried. Im a little lazy so does anyone know offhand how long weve been stuck at the devils number 17???

-no disrespect to the person who actually was 17

Number 18! My boyfriend just called. Just an FYI: I don't tell him to call. He does it on his own.

Thank God! I was starting to think there wouldn't be any movement - we're on a roll again!

Hopefully we're back on track 🙂.

If we get to 20 by wed we will be on the 08 waitlist pace and just one under what our 09 trendline was predicting.

I will do another plot on wed.

Yeah. If we're not at 20 by Friday, then I'll be mad.

I threaten, therefore the wait list moves.

Hahaha. That's awesome.

They are at #19!!!! wahoooooooo... so close

Woo hoo... Looks like those fin aid packets must be arriving. Show AZ the money, OOS schools.

MadEvans, can you do a WL dance or something?

:woot:

Haha love it. I'm totally in.

Anyone on this thread planning on going to Phx? I'm feeling lonely..

I would choose Phx over Tucson, but since their wait list philosophy is so clandestine there's not really much to stress about. Boring.

MadEvans, do a WL dance while being threatening. I think that'll do the trick.

Ooohh. I think I can do it... especially since I'm a natural-born dramatist with medical school application mood swings. 😎

Probably means you haven't submitted your immunizations to student health. If you have, give them (student health) a call and find out why you can't register.

Hey guys I have a few questions about the financial aid thing. So upon acceptance they send you your financial aid packet. From what I gather this apparently tells you the max ammount of money that you can borrow for the year??? Lets say the max is like 42k for the first year. So 20 some odd k convers the actualy cost of tuition. Then apparently you get around 20k for non tuition expenses. How is this money allocated? Do they give you that 20k in a large lump sum or is it broken down into monthly payments? Further is this digitized money ie on a pre-paid credit card? If so is it possible to withdraw cash from this non-tuition money? For example lets say my uncle or someone is selling his used laptop for $900 well obviously it wouldnt be practical to pay him with a credit card so would you be able to pull $900 in cash from that money to pay for the laptop?

I also noticed they had some not allowed things ie Car payments. How does this work? Are they saying that they money that you get cant go toward things like this?

Everyone gets total cost of attendance around 42,000. YOU decide how much you want to borrow (I borrowed 30,000 this year) then they disperse it in two payments at the beginning of each semester. It is cash that goes into your banking account once you link it to student link, so you use it towards whatever you need to use it towards. If you need more or less money throughout the year financial aid office will adjust it for you.

He's right. The living expenses (eg everything not tuition) are estimated on a 10 month cycle. Here is the breakdown from the school:

Tuition and Fees $22,003.00
Room and Meals $11,540.00
Books and Supplies $1,305.00
Transportation $2,300.00
Miscellaneous $3,660.00
Medical Insurance $1,697.00
Laptop Computer $1,299.00
Total: $43,804.00

So there is some in there for transportation, but clearly not enough for a car payment as you mentioned above. I live with my girlfriend (who is in pharm school so we go dutch on nearly everything) and when I went through my finances not too long ago and the monthly allotment is a bit over what my average has been for the past year, and we live pretty cushy, so there is a bit of wiggle room with what you can get.

I also got the impression from the financial aid office at the COM that they are pretty flexible based on your needs-eg if you have a family or what not.

Anyone want to call this morning to get an updated waitlist number?

Hi Guys

So I just got my MCAT score back, but want to retake to improve physical. However, here is my dilemma - I leave for India on the 29th of May, so I want to take the 28th MCAT, but there are no testing sites open in Arizona. Any ideas of what I should do?

Hm, sounds like you almost need to be in two places at once...

Why don't you just borrow Hermione's time-turner for the day, Ron?

Just checked AAMC, there is a spot open in Casa Grande... But yeah, only one open in AZ. Drive there.

I had to drive all the way out to Goodyear from Chandler (about an hour's drive) to take my MCAT. It was a pain, but it turned out OK for me.

Here is the new waitlist plot, thanks sunny.

I treated the past week and half like a bad dream that I just woke up from so all those 17's are not being plotted.

Data Analysis-
First I believe within the next week we will make that jump up to the second trendline where things will be zooming a lot faster. I am hoping by May 13th we will have enough points on our second trendline to make a reasonably good estimate of where we will wind up.

We were experiencing waitlist numbers about a week or so earlier than 08 that has now turned around and we are about 4 days behind. Thus it looks like we will be below the 08 starting point for the second trendline by about two waitlist offers. I have moved the upper and lower bound line estimates down to reflect that.

Since we will be going to 115 seats this year we might pick up that loss in the next several weeks

Estimate-
My new estimate is that we will wind up by mid-june between 45-58 (sorry madevans).

For those at 41 and above I suggest you start your contingency planning/actions, while we await enough points to plot up a good second trendline.

nonlocality, I've followed your plots postings with interest and curiosity and, also, with a bit of eye-rolling when prognostications are made.

In absence of one, I feel obliged to offer a dissenting opinion, not to be an a** but to give waitlist followers more to consider than a single source suggesting that number X or whatever is the golden number and that you should start making plans because of it. I don't like hearsay like that that jerk anxious people around so had to speak up.

I praise the figure for it's aesthetic beauty and officious credibility that it implies. There being no real understanding of the process dynamics, the modeling is entirely empirical. Unfortunately, there is only good data for one year, where there was a different class size on both campuses and non-rolling admissions - that's a big difference. Still, I would expect the ideal curve to be closer to a truncated sigmoidal with perhaps multiple inflection points at events of interest. In this case, the only inflection point I can think of without going too far on a limb is sometime just before May 15th. But linear projections? there isn't much linear about what's going on and there is not enough data to say that slopes will be consistent between last year to this year. Even if they were, there is no data to infer a tail-off or saturation point of, say, an asymmetric truncated sigmoidal, which btw can be very crudely approximated by two slopes.

With all that analysis on insufficient data and wishful modeling, the guesses on where the waitlist will end up at this point is really no different from where y'all were on day one. It's just added to anxiety.

I am kind of with you there biteme.

I don't believe I am dealing with a linear process. But I do believe that it can be reasonably modeled using two lines.

When looking at the raw data wondering how to model it, I took solace from the 08 data being susceptible to linear modeling with the first 07 trendline possibly also being linear and having a similar slope to 08. The second 07 trendline is purely conjecture.

Thinking about the decision space, decision speed and different yield rates for the two different types of offers - I thought I could make logical sense out of breaking it into two different lines. And also on the basis of seeing three different trendlines (two 08 and one 07) seeming to be linear I decided to go that way.

Up until last week our first trend line did a spot-on job of predicting the first 5 weeks. So one can argue that was luck or happenstance but I am suggesting it was pure brilliance instead (not on my part of course).

And even if we extended out our first 09 trendline even further, I believe that we will ultimately wind up within +/- 3 spots of where it was predicting we would be at 7 weeks.

Ultimately my goal was to use these plot lines to help myself estimate the future. But I thought I would share it with others. It is up to each of those who put some credence in them to judge its value for themselves.

The tracking/plotting/modeling is still interesting nonetheless, otherwise there's no reason for me to be here.

Nobody even admired my brilliant Harry Potter joke, really? Well, it sounded good in my head at least.

And, BiteMe, nobody is here to actually plan their life around this wait list plotting. However, it has been a fine way for us to vent our anxiety - not add to it - about medical school admissions (it's much better than yelling at my cats). Nonlocality is doing the same and also providing some quick info to those who follow the SDN threads much less frequently than we do. I know the final wait list acceptee numbers to the 07 and 08 wait lists, but a lot of applicants don't. This is a quick way for them to guess.

So, I feel you here: The tracking/plotting/modeling is still interesting nonetheless, otherwise there's no reason for me to be here.

It's much better than trying to predict your future with a horoscope and a ouija board, that's for sure. The best way to plan is to never assume the "A" word until you hear it. Accepted, that is.

I agree. I was pretty high up on the WL when I got in (<10) and I was still a basket case before I finally go the call. I know it's easier said than done, but try not to think about it and just find something to kill the time while the WL cycles. If you make it through, congrats. If not, the world won't come to an end, you still have options, you can still become a doc. 1/3 of our class had to apply more than once before they got in to UA.

While I have not been taking nonlocality's plots and prognostications as the literal truth, I admit I have been using them to procrastinate studying for the MCAT. Based on his most recent prediction, I apparently need to get off my butt and start studying. Boo!! 😉

Boo indeed. I amnot taking that thing again, unless they tell me I absolutely need to in my file review.

Good luck.

I need a new pair of eyes...sitting in front of the computer for 8 hours writing my thesis gives me blindness. +pissed+
