Narrowed my decision down to these two schools, but I am still very conflicted. What are people's opinions and pros/cons for them?

I'm guessing you've never been to NY and that you have never spent an extended period of time in the city.

Best hospital in the city thats the center of the world. Nuff said.

Columbia is in Washington Heights!!! That place is pure despair and misery...it could break your spirit. I'd rather live in the middle of the Congo! lol.

uhhh so not true. I work and sort of live here, so I know. I'd say pick Vanderbilt, so I can get your Columbia spot hehehe.

So many Vandy comparisons. Are people really that unsure what to think of the place?

I LOVED Vandy! The new curriculum is exciting, Nashville is full of music and fun, the students were so happy, and it's such an impressive campus. Not too crazy like NYC. It will be quiet when you want (good for studying/health), but you can go out and have fun too!

GO WITH VANDERBILT!! 😍😍😍

Most importantly, Vanderbilt is a very safe area. Columbia was amazing but kinda sketch at night

Do listen to her 😛 She withdrew from Vanderbilt and preferred Columbia. Just visit both schools for second look and take notes!

Yeaaaah...pay attention to this. No offense, wangers, but telling someone to go to a school you withdrew from the second you got into Columbia? Come on. Advise people to make the same decisions you'd make, even if they're totally motivated by prestige! 😛 (here's some alooooooe...)

Columbia's the more reputed school, unless you don't want to live in NYC. Which is totally understandable, it's a simultaneously awesome and horrible place, and for many it's incredibly overrated. But there is a ton of diverse opportunity there,

Me personally? I wouldn't want to go to Columbia over Vanderbilt. The difference in administrative personality was too significant for me, and I preferred the atmosphere at Vanderbilt.

I'm more interested in seeing if she would really turn down Harvard HST for Yale.

First of all, Washington Heights is one of the safest neighborhoods in Manhattan, look it up. Second of all, Washington Heights gets hated on by people who have never bothered to explore it. Third of all, Columbia's curriculum is also 1.5. If you would be happier at Vandy, then go to Vandy. That might have to do with location, finances, etc, but they are both great schools that will allow you to pursue your interests.

Also, realize that many people on SDN want you to go to the opposite of their own choice, due to the fact that they are actually on the waitlist, beware of that.

I will be going to second look for both schools as well two others, and if nothing significant happens, I will go with Vanderbilt. I have lived several years in the Northeast and I am looking for a new scene. Ranking matters, but not that much, happiness and personal growth are more important to me, and I feel Vanderbilt will give me much more. I also got a scholarship so I am not looking at much debt after med school so that makes me excited too.

Or it could be even more complicated. Maybe Person A actually wants to get off the waitlist for Vandy so they convince other people to also go to Vandy in such a way that readers call a bluff and think that Person A is trying to go to Columbia, so the reader picks Columbia instead. It's reverse psychology 😛
Of course, this doesn't apply to me. I don't know what I want anymore.
ALL I WANT IS YALE 😍

PS- Okay fine, Columbia > Vandy 😛
I'll stand by my original decision

I've gone so crazy anticipating this last decision that I'm on the verge of going nuts and trolling, but I'll keep calm and carry on.

Haha. Can't resist adding that you voted for Vandy in the poll.

If it is a money issue and it's significant go with Vandy.

Otherwise, go with Columbia. I think the difference between the two in terms of reputation, hospital systems (particularly when it comes to inbreeding), location, and even research is significant. Although they both offer a world of opportunity, I think the majority of people would pick Columbia.

As stated above, sometimes people post things for a number of reasons. To me it is not a question, go with Columbia. I think going to second look with an open mind is a good idea (as you stated you were going to do). If at that point Vandy still feels right and you don't like Columbia, then go to Vandy and don't have any regrets about it.

Also, in terms of location, I would venture to say most people who posted above have never lived in Nashville. It definitely has its share of crime. I actually like Nashville, but it can get boring. It doesn't have much to offer in terms of art/theater/museums as NE cities do. However, it's cheaper and overall the food is good. Also, if you are from the NE and have lived there all your life, perhaps a move to the south would be a good things. The south is an interesting place and has a really distinct culture.
