VMCVM c/o 2020

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I emailed admissions late last night asking about my position and received an email this morning that I need to email them again AFTER the 15th this weekend or on Monday. So most likely won't here anything until Monday.

And the wait continues...

🙂

Has anyone heard where they stand? I emailed but still have not heard a response.. I understand its the weekend, I guess I was just hoping they would be answering emails at this time!

Nope, no one seemed to be in the office yesterday when I rang. Really hoping we hear something tomorrow or can at least be told if we ring!

Hey all you current students!! What are your favorite things about Tech's vet school??

It's funny how much significance I've attached to a number that has some impact on how likely I am to get into vet school. Objectively, I get that life goes on. Emotionally, I am one nervous nellie! I wish I was working in the vet clinic today, just so I could be too busy to worry about checking my email.

Good luck waiting! I'll be the one nervously knitting in the corner, trying to keep myself distracted.

So I did accept my seat and I'm wondering about looking for potential roommates. The email that I got had a link for the 2020 class's Facebook, but is there a place that other years will poke if they're looking for people to fill their housing spots?

I've been reading around old threads, and it sounds like each class starts their own facebook page (2017, 2018, 2019, ect), maybe hit up those? Good luck!

Students from the other classes have been posting in the class of 2020 page so I would definitely check it out!

Does anyone know how many people they've pulled off the OOS wait list so far?

Do you guys think it is a bad idea to do follow up emails to see if there is movement on the wait list or to see if your position has changed?

Does anyone know how many out of state students were interviewed?

Around 140

Okay, so as I understand it (this is my first year applying and the nerves are making me second guess everything!), we all interviewed through MMI , we're ranked 1 to 142, and the first 40 people are offered seats?

Like. I'm about to graduate with my MPH and a 3.92 GPA on friday, and it's hard to feel cheerful about it because I didn't get into vet school.

A "C" by itself won't be a big deal.

So sorry if this is in the wrong place. I did a search, but nothing came up.

I'm looking into potential vet schools for c/o 2021, and was looking into VAMD. On the admissions statistics online, they have Virginia residents, Maryland residents, and other. Why is OOS's statistics substantially lower than IS?

Lol I've always wondered that too......I do hear tech heavily favors experienced applicants though so maybe applicants are chosen more based on experience hours?
"Boooooo."- me, a GPA/ GRE based person who wasted her Summer's doing band/ drum corps instead of getting vet experience.

I'm sorry you didn't get in your first go 🙁. Did you ask for file reviews? a 3.92 is great, so maybe there are other portions of your application you can improve on for next cycle. You should definitely feel proud about graduating with your MPH!!! Don't let this take away from your accomplishments!

I was waitlisted this time around, and I've been going through the motions of improving my application. All of my vet experience is in research, so I'm working as a vet tech and getting some wildlife animal handling experience this summer. I'm also planning on retaking the GRE, to make my score less lopsided. The waitlist limbo really gets me down sometimes. Everyone else around me is super excited to graduate and I'm over here like... meh.

I did ask to get feedback on my MMIs, and I'm trying to be patient.

I think it's probably because those with higher stats are more likely to get into their state schools. If they do, they are going to take those seats over OOS since the tuition is so much cheaper.

There is much more to an applicant than GPA and GRE. Those are known to be an inaccurate predictor of success in vet school. Also, what Gem said.

Oh. Okay.. I'm definitely applying VAMD.
We'll see how it comes out! Worst comes to worst, I'll reapply the next year with more experience hours/ better GPA/ older!

It won't be a matter of if, but when you get in!

High GPA doesn't mean you will do well on MMI. Someone with a high GPA may not actually have the ability to perform well on that kind of assessment. Also because there are 40 OOS students compared to 80 IS students, this probably skews those figures some.

So does that mean we need to plan multiple flights for the interviews?

No, MMI are a series of short interviews that take place on the same day. Google MMI format to check out how they're different from the more typical interview too. No one will be allowed to talk about specific questions though because clauses have to be signed before you go through the MMI.

Edit: Here's a thread about them http://forums.studentdoctor.net/threads/multiple-mini-interviews-mmi.1042749/

Has anyone on the wait list done a file review with the school yet? Did they find it helpful? I'm trying to decide if I should fly down to my file review or do it over skype. OOS Applicant

Just finished my review with the school. I attended interviews so my review was about the interview. It was very helpful and I definitely recommend anyone that was not offered a seat email admissions for a file review. If any one has questions they can PM me. I also have gotten file reviews from a few other schools that I was not offered an interview with.

When they sent out acceptance emails I was told i was OOS waitlisted, #6. I emailed Ms. Jenkins earlier this week and she said that i am now #4, so the waitlist is moving. Anyone else heard anything or planning to decline their OOS seat? 🙂

Hi guys i need some opinions about retaking a class. I want to apply to VMCVM in the near future but need to bring up my GPA. I was thinking of retaking gen bio 2 and general chem 1 at my local community college this summer since I received C's in those classes my freshman year. But when looking at their site, chemistry isn't even counted into their required science GPA. I did well in my required upper level sciences (A's and high B's) but I have several C's from my first 2 years of college that's bringing my cGPA down. Is it worth retaking chem 1 again? I am also planning on taking more upper level science classes at my state school this fall and next spring as well.

Generally, it's better to hack it in upper level science than to go back and take a C pre req.

Retaking those classes isn't going to increase your cGPA all that much, since the old grade isn't going to be replaced by the new grade. I agree with rockatiel that doing better in your upper level science classes is going to benefit you more.

I would call and ask for a phone appointment with Ms. Jenkins (admissions counselor). She will be able to give you the best advice on what to do to strengthen your application between now and when your cycle starts.

Out of curiosity, does anyone on here still need a place to live for the fall?

Anyone on here know how many people VMCVM pulled from the OOS waitlist for 2020 or what your number was when you were pulled??
Thanks in advance!

I believe only 2, I was #6 on the wait list last year and the last time I had emailed admissions they said I had moved to #4.

So my coworker and I were talking (we work in the teaching hospital), and can someone here tell me the dress code for students?

We just finished orientation and still haven't been told. Classmates have said that each class chooses their own dress code, but I haven't heard that officially confirmed yet.
