Here are the hub sites for clinical rotations that some have been asking for. Keep in mind that these are subject to change as new hospitals come in & other hospitals drop out of partnerships with WCUCOM. I am a member of the class of 2014, if some of the class of 2015 has more up to date info regarding this, or if I left any sites out, feel free to chime in. I've heard that a hub site is being added in AR in the Pine Bluff area, also I left Clarkesdale, & Grenda MS off the list because I heard they are dropping out. Also, keep in mind that for some rotations a student in one hub site will have to drive outside of that site to do their rotation. This will only be 1 or 2 months out of the year. Just for the sake of accuracy, Southwest MS Regional Medical Center is in McComb.

King's Daughters is in Brookhaven.. About 20 miles north of McComb.

I'm finally jumping back into the forums. Haven't been here since 2009. I'm a non-traditional student, and I just got an interview to WCUCOM for April 1st!! Anyone else going then? I was also wondering how long after interviewing that people got acceptance notices? And if you have been accepted and don't mind sharing, what are your stats? I'm so very excited, but also don't want to get my hopes up too high. I'd love to know what kind of stats they are really looking for, or if getting an interview means I have what they are looking for, numbers-wise. Thanks! Good luck to everyone interviewing and congrats to those of you accepted for the c/o 2017!!

I interviewed on a Friday, and got my decision on the next Wednesday. My stats are just above last year's average for WCUCOM.

From what has been said on this forum, and from personal experience:

If you got an interview, you have what they are looking for in paper (I.e. numbers, EC's, etc) and its your game now. They want you there, and want to see that you want to be there. Go to the interview feedback section of this site for WCUCOM. It is a very good indication of how interview day will be.

Congrats on the interview! It's an accomplishment to be proud of!

On interview day, they showed us a map with student's home states. Most came from the gulf region, but a good bit came from other areas. If you indicate that you would like to practice primary care in a rural area, and show that in your EC's, it will help.
 
Thanks, MoeMed15! I hope we are classmates! WCUCOM seems right up my ally. I'm excited to see the school, and I am so so ready to be a med student (fingers and toes crossed!!)

I think it would. Part of the WCUCOM mission statement mentions foreign missions.

My EC's included volunteering with an org that offers support in rural areas. I know that's vague, but best I can say here. Showing interest in primary care can be through shadowing. You could also mention the interest in the secondary essay.

WCU really pays attention to those who identify with its mission statement. Make sure that you're not just blowing smoke, though. If you really have no interest in something, don't say that you do. 😀

Good luck!

The faculty and staff really impressed me on interview day. The facilities are brand new and the area is great. There have been current students on here bashing the school, but Hou should take those opinions, as well as the opinions of the students who love it, with a grain of salt. Keep an open mind and make a decision that is best for you. Med school, from what I understand, will be what you (we) make it.

Are you applying this cycle? If you haven't sent in your primary in for this cycle, you are behind IMO. I could be wrong though.

I don't think that the reason you went to India would be as important as what you did while you were there. You could talk about your experiences while you were there. Maybe how you witnessed the lack of access to care an show it mirrors certain areas here in the states (I.e. rural areas). Just be sincere and honest. If you show that you identify with their mission, and have at least decent stats, you should get a secondary, and an interview.

Depends...

Did you volunteer, shadow, or have some other activity at those hospitals? It did you just notice the lack of hospitals in passing?

The former should be on AACOMAS. The latter should be a point in your PS, I think. Just my opinion.

WCUCOM likes non trads (It would be to get more non trad than me.) Just talked with a PhD immunology professor who interviewed last week. Any questions PM me and I will get back to as soon as I can.
 
I just found out I was accepted here today!!! Anyone else on here find out today?
 
I guess technically yesterday (I didn't realize it was that late already). Haha!
 
I am not sure. They didn't say how many spots were remaining.

I absolutely agree. I nearly destroyed myself trying to attend from Biloxi. You will not be able to do it. Don't try.
 
So some of you may know me from this post, but it is tragic how this school is being trashed by a few pessimists on this board. I feel like I have to say something about my experience. I had to withdraw this year for medical reasons. I was sad to go. WCU COM has many caring, kind, and involved faculty and staff They really are concerned about how the students are doing. I don't get the attendance issue. The 80 percent requirement is in the handbook. If you don't want to come to class, then this likely is not the school for you.

I am applying to be reinstated. That's right. I went, I know what I'm in for, and I want to return. I can't imagine going anywhere else at this point, and I look forward to facing the firehose once more. What you see on interview day from the faculty is what you get. They care about their profession, they want you here, and they willing to put in as much work into this as you are in order to help you achieve your goal.

It's not perfect, but then are we perfect students? I'm confident that it's far better than is being portrayed by a few folks here who are bent on magnifying the school's faults.
 
I just received my official acceptance letter in the mail today! There is something about seeing it in writing that makes it more real! I can't wait to start in the fall!

Facebook group is hovering around 30. If you got an interview, you have very good odds of getting in. They only invite a very small number of applicants out of thousands.
 
Can anybody tell me what kind of questions they ask during the interview? I can't seem to find them in the interview feedback section. I am interviewing there next week. Thank you
 
They range from tell us about yourself, why do you want to come here, an ethical question, etc etc.

Well, it's considered "bad form" to ask that question directly, especially online when the school has admission personnel active.

That said, if you want to know how to perform well during your interview, you should do the regular steps associated with med school interviews. Do some introspection- consider why you want to practice medicine, specifically osteopathic medicine. Why are you on your current path? Is this because of your own efforts or do you attribute part of your success to your upbringing? What field would you like to practice in?

Define yourself to yourself. Any interview after that is a cakewalk.
 
Does anyone know when the entire class of 2017 will be accepted by? I'm assuming we won't receive registration paperwork until all class members have been accepted??😕
 
If you've been accepted, make sure to contact Jessica Meador for an invitation to the class of 2017 Facebook group. Looks like a beach trip south of Hattie may be in order for this July for anyone interested
 
Need some clarification. For 3rd year Rotations do students go out of Hattiesburg and if they have to, do they vacate their apartments every time for away rotations. What are current 3rd yr students doing about this situation? What about the accommodations for away rotations? Does the school provide or on your own?

I am not a student yet, but from what I understand, the rotations are set up by hub sites. They have a list of locations and they rank their 3 top choices. They get their assignment and are placed at that hub site for 3rd year, where all of their rotations will take place. Some are in Hattiesburg, but some are in other locations like Gulfport, McComb, etc. My guess is that you would have to relocate if your hub site is not Hasttiesburg. I don't think that the school provides assistance with housing, but I could be wrong. And I really doubt that the school will provide your accommodation during away rotations, but again, I could be wrong.

Current students can answer better than I, but this is what I get from past posts on this thread. 🙂
 
I'm a current 3rd year, doing my rotations away from Hattiesburg. To answer the question, if your hub site is away from Hattiesburg then you will move to that hub site and spend all of 3rd year there. The only exception is if your hub site is in Laurel, since it is only 30-40 min from Hatty, I know some classmates that just make the drive everyday. Then for 4th year, you will be doing audition rotations in the fall. These rotations will be at the place of your choice, anywhere in the country. Once you match you can choose to come back to your 3rd yr hub site until you finish in April, or you can continue doing away rotations at the places of your choice. You will need to budget for all of this traveling when you take out student loans because the school does not pay for this. For me, I plan on keeping my house in my 3rd year hub site even though I won't be staying in it between aug-dec while I'm off doing auditions because I want to come back to my hub site and finish out my 4th year, but I also know some of my classmates don't want to pay rent for something they won't be using. So I guess if you do that to save money, you will have to spend an extra 3 months in the spring of 4th year living as a nomad. To each his own, hope this helps
