For those of you who are current WSU students, I'm looking to be sold on going to WSU over a few other places but I have a few questions that will factor into my decision:
1) How would you compare the availability of (specifically) grants and scholarships at WSU compared to what you've heard at other universities? Like my current undergraduate institution touts handing a lot of money out to students, but once you're here you realize it's pretty much an all or none sort of scenario. I've done some research and seen the rough numbers WSU has posted on their website, but in your experiences how would you say it's distributed? Do a lot of people get scholarship money from outside the university as well?
2) If you were accepted to other institutions, what made you pick WSU? Are there things you thought were awesome that turned out to be "meh"? Is there something most people don't mention that you think is a huge plus?
3) Do you feel your time there is giving you connections to places or does it feel pretty insular?
4) Should I visit the campus before deciding? (I guess the answer is probably yes.)
1) Unless you're in the top few percent, doing something special interest that's well funded, or just uniquely lucky, the scholarship money generally isn't enough to make a big difference overall.
They say that everyone at some point in the program gets a scholarship. Which is true. Over four years I got three CVM scholarships from WSU; all my friends got at least one or more. They weren't game changing amounts though. I think my total was a little over 2.5k.
Students in the top ~10 percent seem to do well, but since I was relatively average that didn't apply to me. I know they also did a whole year of tuition for 1 special person in 3rd year or something. And there were a few other very large amounts, some were field specific (LA, research, etc). So if you're one of those lucky people, then it's great for you. But most of the class ended up with a few thousand here and there.
So to answer the question - it's evenly distributed in modest amounts to everyone and then a few lucky people get bigger scholarships.
I did get a good amount of scholarship money outside of WSU but I don't think that's very common.
2) I was accepted to 2 schools and wait listed at 1. I picked WSU because it was IS and that was the bottom line for me. Everyone has a different definition of "meh", so you'll have to make that call for yourself. Aspects of the program I might not have like may appeal to other people and vice versa.
3) The vet community itself is relatively small, so you can make many connections while at vet school. It's really what you make of it though. Two people will come out of school with a different network of contacts based on who they interacted with and what they did.
4) Yes, visit the campus. They'll set you up with a tour, let you sit in on classes and talk to current students. Do not let anything you hear on the internet form your opinion about a school. I'm not going to "sell" you on WSU and really no one should. Your own feelings, logic and pocketbook should do that.
EDIT - I have an old scholarship award program somewhere, listing the different scholarships and the amounts. If you're intensely curious I can dig that up. But generally most of them are less than 2k, there are many that are less than 1k, a handful at 5-9k, and the one rare full tuition for a year.
