WSU/USU c/o 2018 applicants!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I think mine went really well. I like it up there and everyone was incredibly nice. Can't wait to here back!

We should hear this week right?? Also I read somewhere that we SHOULD send thank you letters to interviewers (some schools say not too, but I know WSU said to do so). But now I can't find where I saw it! Should we send email or mail? I only remember one of the names of the interviewers, I'll have to do some website stocking to find the woman's name. 😵

I had never heard of that until like a month ago but I would think a thank you card would work. You should be able to email Barbara and she can tell you. It'll be a few weeks I think for the snail mail, maybe sooner for the portal.

I actually emailed Barbara already. She said to just mail your thank you cards to her and she will get them to your interviewers. Also, I suppose you could ask who the other interviewer was because they seemed to interview in pairs. Who did you have by chance? I could help you if we had the same ones. I had Robert Mealey and Norah McCabe.

Great thanks!!
No, I have Kevin Snekvik the other had a food animal background...I haven't scoped out the faculty pages online yet though.

I don't know if this helps but I know Dr. Lampa did some interviews as he wasn't in our anatomy class this week. Also, granted I was in state but I heard via snail mail only 3 days after my interview. I'd assume a week or so if they work the same.

Hahah! Lampa, Snekvik and Mealey are interviewing? Y'all really don't need to be nervous 🙂 They're some of the nicest guys!

My necropsy rotation had Snekvik for a little while. One day he let us have rounds at Ferdinand's (the campus ice cream shop) - and he treated everyone!

Mealey teaches immunology and has the funniest stories. And I think Lampa just comes across as jolly. He was a really good sport about participating in our junior revue videos and things.

I can't think of any of the regular instructors that would be outright intimidating. Dr. Foryet might have fun with you, but in good sport. I'm not sure he still teaches though? The guy basically wrote the book on parasites.

But I suppose hindsight is 20/20. I was nervous about my interview! As I was going through the program I got to know more of my interview panel folks. No one to be afraid of 🙂

Yeah Snekvik was super nice!! He laughed at all my little "jokes" and such!! I found the other one online...Dr. Dale Moore, she was a little tougher but still nice! 🙂 just waiting to hear now!!

Had the best time at my USU interview! Everyone- current students, administrative support, and interviewing faculty- were all wonderful! I was very, very impressed with the school. I would consider myself quite honored to attend. Fingers crossed. According to the interview panel, I should know in two weeks time whether or not I am accepted to the program. Thanks, Abney and co., for the insightful advice and wonderful tour! Fantastic experience overall!!

It most certainly was! I was shocked when I got the email today 🙂 I was fully prepared to wait the two weeks Dr. Talcott had indicated when I left my interview. Fine by me- happy to be surprised!

Thanks, everyone, for your kind words of support, encouragement, and congratulations! 🙂

For any current students out there: Is it true that "most vet students" live in Albion? Also, I don't have a car, and would rather not have to buy one. (I'm fine taking the bus to and from Spokane when I want to go "home") Do most people have a car or are busses reliable? I would realllly rather save the money for tuition!

Gahhhhh!!!! CONGRATS!!!! I didn't get anything!!! 🙁 did your app status change?!?!!?!
Hi Hollista,

Thanks for your congratulatory wishes. Remember, I'm in the UT pool and interviewed at USU. We completed our interviews over the course of two days. The admissions panel completed their deliberations VERY quickly. I interviewed on Wednesday and my decision was returned Friday. I haven't seen anyone here on SDN post with respect to WSU general OOS interviews. I definitely wouldn't start freaking out 😉 Best of success! Hope to see you in the class of 2018!!

Hi Smolive! I'm a current first year at WSU. It's not true that most vet students live in Albion. I can only think of one person in my class that lives there. You would have to drive about 20-25 minutes every day to get to class so you'd definitely need a car if you chose to live there. I rent a house that is a 10 min drive to Bustad but the buses run regularly and a lot of people take the bus. I have two dogs so I choose to drive home on lunch every day to walk them. If you don't have pets then the bus would be fine for you.

What day did you interview? sometimes it may take longer for different pools of applicants...hang in there!

Anyone knows how many OOS applied to WSU this year? and how many they are taking?

I interviewed on the last Friday! Lol!!
Just being impatient!!
Not sure how many applied...I think it's listed earlier in this post.....
They're taking 25 OOS to Washington.
10 OOS to Utah.

No. That is not even close to true.

Only a couple of my classmates lived there.

Most people have cars, but that's for convenience. If you live nearby you can walk or bus. I had one friend who didn't drive and another who bussed in from Moscow.

If I had to make a "most vet students" blanket statement, it'd be that most vet students live in trailers.

In my class it was pretty much like this: people living in Pullman 85%, Moscow 10%, Albion/Colfax/further out 5%

Also a note for future students - make a spot in your budget for studded snow tires, or some kind of snow tire.

Some winters are worse than others and you will definitely need them. The plowing is not really reliable and as a vet student you'll be doing shifts ending at midnight, overnights, weird hours, etc when the roads aren't taken care of yet.

When it does snow so much the rest of campus closes (which is very rare), the vet hospital is still open. So if you have clinics and it snows 18 inches overnight you still need to get in for your patients.

Thats funny you mentioned this... I wondered if I needed a set for my interview! they are kinda expensive too. I think a set of 4 can run anywhere from$600-800. Did you guys get any snow recently?

you mean the 24th or the 17th? if the former, then hahahhaha...yes..you are being impatient. 😛

I'm so glad it was a good experience! I'm rather proud of our little school! Hoping you hear good news soon!

hey, what happened to your dinosaur picture? That raccoon looks awfully dressed up.

There is no snow on the ground at all. We've had a pretty warm winter in Pullman.

The 17th! That was the last day for interviews. 😉 seeeeeeee not incredibly impatient just very! Hahahahaha the interview invite letter said decision letters will be sent out within one week after deliberations are finished....so yes it could be like 2-3 more weeks... But but but...."I want the golden goose nowwwww daddy!!!!" Hahahaha oh just so bored and full of impatience and cannot concentrate one ounce of effort into my current boring classes!!!

OK, so you only have a another week or two...not so bad. Will be over before you know it. Where else did you apply to?

Hahaha yeah i know it will fly by!! 🙂
I'm waiting to hear from Penn still, not sure if I'll get an interview my GPA isn't stellar. Haha I'm really experience heavy, not sure if they'll look at that though.

They look at everything as a whole...GPA isn't everything. If you get into both, which one are you gonna take? are you in so cal or nor cal?

SoCal. Not sure....I just don't think I will get a Penn offer...I think WSU def looked at app as a whole, but not sure Penn will be so kind! Lol! IF (huge if) I got into both I would have a lot to consider...I would def need to sit down and weigh the odds. Cost of living is much higher in Penn than WA but it's pretty similar to SoCal. Would have to look at a lot of factors. I'm equine interest so Penn's NB center is pretty appealing! Idk... It would be a dream to go to either.

Are you doing undergrad now or just taking care of pre-reqs? so you didn't apply IS then, to Davis and Western?

Doing undergrad, applied early (kinda) won't finish biochem degree, original plan was to get pre reqs done w/o degree while working almost full time (night shifts), and apply once done with pre-reqs and if I got in early great, or if I finished degree by the time I got in then I'd have degree! Kind of a whichever came first situation.
I didn't apply to Davis bc go figure the first year I get to apply, is the year they require a bachelors degree. I will finish it in the fall/maybe a couple classes in spring...(if I don't get in), so couldn't apply to Davis (was totally bummed at first but figured hey, what's supposed to happen will happen). Didn't apply to western bc I work with a lot of their students (where I work is their equine rotation clinic), and just from talking with a lot of them and seeing them work I just didn't feel like it was the school for me. Plus it's expensive! Lol! No IS price break! What about you? You apply this year? Or already in?

I didn't know Davis requires a BS now. That's weird, I don't think any other school does that. I am a non-traditional.

But do you usually get a lot of snow in winter? you are right. This winter has been awfully warm and dry on the west coast.

I think the average is a little over 2ft.

First two pictures: my second or third year in school, one of the heaviest snow falls overnight that season. School was not delayed or canceled.

The last picture: from my first year, we had a record breaking 7.5 feet over winter. (the photo with the huge pile in the yard - snow plow pushed it there from the street)

It's also snowed in late April and even June, though it doesn't stick.

Obviously those are special instances or I wouldn't have bothered taking pictures. I'd say while I was there I had 2 unusually heavy snow years, 1 light year, and one average year. Most of the time it's normal or relatively manageable, some times are just ridiculous.

Hi guys, congrats on the admission offers already! I think it took me a week or two to hear back, so don't fret if you don't know yet. 🙂 My roommate and I are 3rd year vet students (both female, one 27 years old, one 23), looking for a vet student roommate for our 3 bedroom house in Pullman. If living with two 4th years who will each be gone about half the time sounds appealing, give me an e-mail and I'll give you more details! Ideally it would be someone without any pets, as we have two dogs and a cat, but we might be able to work out something for one pet. Also, we are hoping to ideally find someone who can help us take care of our pets, for a discount on the rent...(as we will be working long hours on our rotations!) Anyway, my e-mail is esmith at vetmed.wsu.edu

Is it ok if I pass this on to the second years here in Utah or would you prefer a first year? Maybe since they have more free time 🙂

Okay today marks 2 weeks since interviews finished!! Anyone know if it's snail mail or email? I creeped on last years and it looked like mostly snail mail....but some emails. Any current WSU students want to go stock Barbara Hodson and see when/if letters have been sent yet? Getting soooo impatient!! Mainly bc I'm taking extra classes for my degree that I don't need for WSU but have to take incase I don't get in and need to finish degree in the fall (won't have degree finished this semester either way). If I get in I will be dropping these classes so fast!! Hahaha:laugh:
