hmm that's weird considering that a few people on sdn have gotten the call already...miscommunico?

chemisty0157--i interviewed early at baylor, and i think that out of the 40-50 or so people there only about 4-5 were from oos...so my guess is that they are lookin' at the texans' first. which makes sense because texans are bombdiggity 😉

So does anybody know how often Baylor makes the acceptance calls? Is it once a week or every other week or once a month?

So the dean of admissions calls each person individually. This process, because he is so busy, takes a long time. That means that they can have made the decisions already for many people but it takes a while to catch up. I wish it were a quicker process, but it is what it is...

Do you think maybe it is in alphabetical order (based on the previous weeks' interviewees)? What are the last names of the people who got called so far?

Just got the call from Dr. Greenberg -- I'm in!!!

I got an acceptance call tonight (~8 pm eastern time). Possibly the most exciting news I have ever received!!!!! I LOVED the school on my visit. 😍 I couldn't even concentrate on what he said after i heard the word 'accepted.'

:luck: Good luck to everyone still waiting to hear!

I am so pleased and so shocked. I have to thank my host.

😍😍😍

Wow.

oh man. i hope the dean is not done calling people tonight!

slipstream heard about 45 mins ago... oyee, i know a little piece of me is going to die with each week that i don't hear back

its only been 15 minutes since i posted that last message, but i went from holding onto hope to giving up for the night.

At one point in the 15 minutes of still having hope of getting a call from baylor tonight, I decided to get a coke from the coke machine as a destraction. I got a mellow yellow even though I hate mellowyellow, because i somehow convinced myself it would make tonight 'special' or lucky and increase my chance of getting a call. I'm going crazy....time to get back to homework 🙁

pinkblue and htown,

I suspect that you will hear from Baylor when you least expect it.

:luck::luck::luck:

like true love. smacks you in the face when you least suspect or probably even want it.

I'm still in utter and complete and total shock. Good shock, of course, but total shock.

Ahh... I'm going to choose to believe you are right 🙂 Thanks & congrats to you!

^You are very kind. And I have confidence in your hearing great news.

Congrats to all those accepted!!! I just want an interview invite...

pianola--i was wondering, are they calling your home phone number or your cellie?

congratulations by the way 🙂

Well, they called my cell first but I was out, and I didn't hear my phone ring (also I didn't expect any calls from people I knew at nearly 8pm). So then the dean called my parents (or so my parents tell me). I listed my cell phone as my primary number.

You know it's funny, I just realized I have no evidence that I got into Baylor except my mom's word for it that the dean called. My status page is the same as ever...

So, hehe, hopefully she's telling the truth and she's not just pulling my leg .

hahaha your mom wouldn't do that! even though it's funny.

Aren't you just a little scared that your mom said something crazy when she talked to the dean?!

Heh, yeah, I can only imagine what she said. She's the type who tends to appear "underexcited"; she shows less excitement than she actually feels. She's also kind of hard to understand on the telephone because she has a strong Greek accent.

I hope it wasn't an uncomfortable conversation...

When did everyone interview that got accepted? I didn't till the beginning of Oct., so I hope that It's OK that I haven't heard anything yet.

Each day that I don't hear from Baylor, I become progressively more depressed...sigh.

So far it looks like everyone accepted interviewed on the 3rd. So you're in good company. No worries, emucansado. Hopefully you will hear soon.

Btw does your sn mean "sleeping emu"? 😀

doesn't cansado mean tired, so wouldn't it be tired emu?

Yeah, "tired emu". That's me. You're gonna need that Spanish in Houston!

I'll take your word for hearing back soon. That will keep me from 🙁.

Yeah, I keep wanting to take some kind of medical Spanish course. I might look into it next semester.

Hehe, "tired emu", you are not yet old enough to be a senior citizen. Because that makes me one, too. So just keep that in mind.

I'm planning on taking one next semester too...pretty sure I'll need it if I stay in Texas...plus it will just be fun to know!

I also interviewed on Oct 3rd and haven't heard anything at all. When people were first getting calls, I checked my phone for missed calls. I saw a voicemail and got excited but it turned out to be from my Dad, 👎.

Sorry for your lack of news...but that's just funny

So I've been fortunate that I haven't caught any of the SDN anxiety yet ... well that is until I read this thread. 😛

I told one of my friends who currently goes to UTSW that I got into Baylor. Her response: "Baylor blows." Here are some of her reasons:

1. They lost their clinical hospital, so they've had to made frantic arrangements for their 3rd and 4th years' rotations. Yes, they found them *something*, but do you really think that's the ideal situation to be in?

2. Their research is widely known to be sub-par. In the past their prestige has come from the clinical side and their fantastic clinical hospital... oh WAIT.

3. The only reason they're ranked so high is because they include the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center's research, building and funds. But, OH WAIT, that all belongs to UT Houston. Maybe you'll have a little access, but dude, might as well just go to UT Houston, it's better.

4. They get like no NIH funding, because even the NIH knows how hard they suck. They're trying to build themselves a new hospital right now (because they drove away their old one by being bitchy), and all the money for the new hospital is coming from philanthropy that could bottom out at any time.
Lies? Truths? What do you all have to say?

I've heard a little bit about the hospital drama, but most of the current students say it affects the residents more than the undergraduate medical students. I'd look at the NIH website to see how Baylor looks in funding. It appears that although they may not get as many grants per se, the amount of the funding puts them around number 11 in the nation.

When I was at UTSW, they tried to "adjust" all of their relative rankings by pointing out how small their faculty is compared to other schools. Their argument was mostly that they were a fantastic institution (which they are) given their size, maybe even "more fantastic" than some other schools. The dean said that the rankings did not necessarily mean that they were better or worse, although I kind of wonder why they would dedicate so much time in their presentation talking about it unless they really thought it meant something. Just my 2 cents.

this sounds like bitterness coming from someone that wants to believe that their school is the best. 🙄 i'm not hating on UTSW. it's a good school as well. i just wouldn't take what your "friend" says as gospel and hinge a decision on it.

lost our "clinical hospital"? not true as far as i've heard. maybe you're talking about the Methodist split that occurred eons ago. we have an agreement now with St. Luke's which is a similar type of facility (private) that has replaced those opportunities. we have MANY hospitals and facilities that students rotate in.

research being subpar? not sure about that. we hear daily about cutting edge research that's happening at Baylor. i don't know specifics about funding and what not, but research is happening and it is significant. also, we do have an MSTP program and a research track for regular MD students.

Anyone hear of a September 5th interviewee getting in? It's weird that everyone who's reported on SDN interviewed on 10/3.

I'm a 9/5 person waiting too. Let's keep our fingers crossed that they just stacked their october interview acceptance list on top of the september interview acceptance list... and baylor will call us soon...

On the lies, damn lies and statistics spectrum, those fall along the "damn lies" - I really hate it when people propagate mistruths, if not outright lies, as gospel about other schools.... But here, let me address the Baylor stories.

1. Baylor and Methodist are no longer best-buddies, but they have maintained an affiliation for the sake of shared programs that could not be split apart. As a medical student, you will still rotate through Methodist. 3rd and 4th year rotations were never cobbled together, as students did 3/4 of their rotations at the VA and the county hospital. The remaining 1/4 were done at private hospitals like TIRR, St. Luke's, Methodist, MD Anderson, Texas Childrens. That will continue.

2. MD Anderson is not "UT Houston's." It is an independent facility under the aegis of the University of Texas, but saying that means MD Anderson is UT Houston's is like saying that UT Southwestern is UT Houston's. MD Anderson runs a graduate school with UT Houston (i.e. for PhD's) but Baylor MSTP students have the option to do their PhDs at MDA, and multiple Baylor clinical and research programs run through MDA (off the top of my head, I think Neurosurg, Psych, Endocrine, Radiology, ENT, Bone Dz Program of Texas). And speaking of UT Houston, Baylor students have the option to do an MPH at UT School of Public Health - the affiliations within the Texas Medical Center are not a zero-sum game, and while these institutions are competing in some ways, they're also collaborating.

3. I'm not even going to touch that "Baylor's research is crap" one, because I'm going to end up insulting UTSW in the process. But by any objective measure, Baylor's research is not crap. Baylor gets no NIH money? Just factually wrong - get more than all but a few (and that few doesn't include Southwestern by a longshot). And we're getting criticized for funding the building of the new hospital by philanthropy? How else do you build a new hospital? Uh, the money's already donated, it can't bottom out...

Whether or not you choose Baylor, don't trust hearsay about ANY school. And seriously, I hope I didn't come off as a jerk, but I don't want you (or anyone else) to be misled. Feel free to PM or post any questions - I'm busy but I will answer them to the best of my abilities.

It seems like all of the acceptances that went out were to OOS people...

I interviewed 9/5, and I'm still waiting to hear from anyone.

wasn't jjabrams in state?? who knows, maybe they wait until 11/15 like all the other tx schools... then again, maybe they just don't want me (yet?) :cries:

Yeah, it definitely seems like more OOS people have been accepted.

I'm going to be so anxious until I hear from Baylor. 🙁

someone on the acceptance thread was IS

I second Jolie South and BaylorLion--tell your friend being a hater isn't cute😀. Any opportunity you want is offered at Baylor in spades. You'll probably get a lot of Baylor students coming out of the woodworks to respond to this one cause its everything that we fight so hard against, and all the negative qualities we try to keep out of our school...

someone on the acceptance thread was IS

Yeah they don't wait until 11/15 to start for IS. However everyone known to be accepted was from 10/3. Maybe they just started with the most recently reviewed people and they will EVENTUALLY get back to us early early interviewees. 🙂 This means, please call me BAYLOR... Pretty please with sugar on top!

Yeah, the impression I got from the facilities and the institution at Baylor was that there is MORE than enough support for Baylor and its students. My interviewer specifically mentioned how many research opportunities there are at Baylor. And I think research rankings are specifically based on NIH funding, and, seeing as Baylor's near the top, you kind of have to assume that they get plenty of NIH funding.

I'm really surprised there aren't more in-staters hearing from Baylor! I thought that 75% of the class was from Texas 😕. Am I wrong about that?

Also...if you're an out-of-stater at Baylor...how do you become an in-stater 😕? I heard you had to buy property in Texas to become a resident. I'm not that rich, that's for sure.

Also: do any OOSers ever opt to maintain their OOS status? I'm sure I'd love Texas if I lived there...but Florida has always been very good to me.

No hating on Florida or Floridians or people who don't feel like paying OOS tuition, please. You would be asking the exact same thing if you were in my shoes.

The class has to be >70% in state and possibly even greater this year (a rumor I heard). I am shocked that more IS haven't heard yet. But this may have to do with the first interview days being loaded with IS and how they are sort of going with reverse order? I don't know, I'm hypothesizing. But not admitting overwhelming IS actually is decreasing my current stress level (which is at crazed right now).

I don't know about the IS/OOS thing, but I did hear about the need to have some sort of property in passing.

i think you have to own property or be living here for a job/other reason for 1 yr.

^Yeah 10/3 seemed to be about half Texan maybe 😕. So probably a little low compared to the class they will accept.

Maybe Baylor is preparing financial aid for those of you guys who haven't heard yet. Or something.

JT2008 reported in this thread his/her friend had received "the call" last week and she had interviewed in early September.

pianola--i think you have to establish "domicile" before you can attain residency...domicile means working for a year, owning property, owning a business, or marrying a texan for a year ;p

that's according to the UT website at least.
