"Highly Desirable- Deferred" Do I get my hopes up?

same here! anyone know exactly what "highly desirable" means in terms of our chances of getting accepted in dec.?

Hey guys, I also got the same deferrment message.

I was (and am) pretty hopeful. But I spoke with my friend last year, who had very good stats/activities who received the same message. She said not to get too excited because usually movement isn't much.

Maybe it's just her opinion, but hearing that made me lose some hope.

I still haven't heard anything and I've been complete since the middle of July...I figure it's because I don't have a typical application (or so I hope).

Do they share anything helpful when you call?...something beyond that you're still under review?...

maybe call and ask them how this all works? (and maybe ask about their waitlist too?! like how many ppl get accepted off it??!)

i've pretty much given up hope though 🙁 so sad about it 🙁🙁 i loved ann arbor

Can't say that I would want to go to a school that wasn't impressed enough with me to offer an acceptance after the interview.

I don't know if that's true. I spoke to one of my friends who is a current student and he said that plenty of people were deferred and later accepted--they just wanted to see them in the context of the rest of the pool. I remember the admissions officers saying something similar at the information session on interview day. Any UMich students care to weigh in?

I think what you say makes sense. I have heard some people say it works like that. I really don't know how many people get in off the list in December. If any of us were to call the office, I think the response would be "it varies from year to year", which is probably true.

I'm not a med student, but I would say that a deferal is not the end of the line by any means.

If it's a top choice obviously try to update your app with anything relavent by December (so at the very least you are showing you are extremely interested). You could also try a letter of intent before the ad comm meeting in December if UMich is your top choice. In any case, good luck!

yeah...based on the interview day, it doesn't seem like they would be cruel enough to call us highly desirable and then reject us...

hopefully...

oh cwap, i don't want my application sitting next to some of yall's craziness...:uhno:

How do you check your status for Michigan?

I was reading some of the earlier posts and people said they received pre-interview holds? I was complete early August but I haven't heard anything since. Bad news?

Nope, it's not a bad thing. 🙂 Under review is definitely better than a hold. You should have gotten the address to check your status after you did your secondary, I believe.

Lady Marid-

Under review is better than hold I guess, but I'm going crazy about not hearing back from Mich yet.

Complete as of Sep 12 and it's Oct 16... sent a Letter of Interest a few days ago too. :beat:

Yeah, I know how you feel...I was complete in mid-July and it took three months to hear anything. Apparently people who were complete as early as July can hear as late as January, so it could be a long wait. :/

My status shows "initial review complete" since 7/30

That sounds more like a hold...it's surely not a rejection!

It doesn't look good. I mean if they accepted 90 out of 200 a few days ago. In december, it will be much fewer.

But I am still hopeful. good luck to us all!

Actually, on the admissions site it says only 28% of the admissions offers have been extended.

That is true Lady Marid, but the 28% refers to total class. Since the target is around 330, 28% of that is about 90-92.

Michigan hands out about 350 each year, I believe, for a class of ~170, so there's still lots of room in the class

hey peeps,
just some info for those waitlisted, the lady on the phone said that approx 400 ppl are waitlisted, and approx 20 were accepted last year, so ~5% acceptance rate off the waitlist. (grrr 🙁🙁🙁)

i also found another thread where someone claimed to have asked director ruiz the rate for deferred ppl, and he quoted 20%.

hope this helps!!

400 people cant possibly be waitlisted....750 interviews...350 admissions.....some people are deferred some people waitlisted...clearly some people must be rejected?? 400 number sounds too high

Does this mean my file has not been reviewed yet?

Your application Status as of 09/08/2008

Your file is under review. Reviews may take up to several months and could include some "on hold" time while we compare files of groups of applicants. You can view the checkboxes on this screen to see which of your materials we have received (allow 3 weeks for delivery and recording of materials you have sent). I don't think you can tell from the status page. They might not have reviewed it, or they might have reviewed it with a group of applicants and put you off till later. My page basically said that until the day I got my interview. Good luck!

Well...my status as of 7/28/08

Initial review completed.

I just checked today and my status is still the same.

This does not look good. Should I email the adcom?
They have received everything.

Just in case there are some lurkers...I just called the admin office and the lady said that decisions should be posted on our status pages later today or tomorrow. :scared:

From what I recall they basically only reject a few people. Most people are waitlisted or accepted. I think it was like 10 percent rejected immediately. Did anyone get a defferal that DIDN'T say Highly Desirable or something of the same? It seems like everyone is highly desirable.... lol. Ruiz told me that being deferred til December is not a bad thing, most accepted students are. Basically most of the spots that got filled up were the people they needed and U of M applicants who were strong enough.

I was accepted!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :soexcited:

They email you a video with the dean saying you were accepted, right? No status page update yet!?!?!

Congrats!!

And yeah, my status page didn't change for a day or two after getting the e-mail. 🙂

Yea, they send you the video link and then like 2 days later you get another email saying your status page has been updated, which has your acceptance.

Congrats!

Just wondering, what was this video like? Is it different than the video from midnight 10/15? That one had Dean Gay like run into a helicopter and fly to your house and then he opens the door at "midnight" (according to a clock in the corner) and tells you. I assume its a different video now.

Michigan is so cool, they use videos to let you know you get accepted. Who else can say they do that?

haha good thanks! I had to rewind the video 10 times to make sure that he said "you've been admitted."

haha same video...but no clock that says midnight.

this might be a dumb question... but how did you guys get back to the airport after your interview? Did you arrange for an airport shuttle ahead of time or just call a taxi when the day was over?

The Michigan Flyer is nice. It's like 15-20 bucks for a ticket. Add on another 15 dollars or so for a taxi to get from the med school campus to where it picks up in Ann Arbor. But it drops you off right at the terminal and has free wireless too.

hey mmmcdowe, what makes u say that most people who get accepted are deferred? did ruiz say that himself?

I guess that means U of M applicants who weren't 'strong enough' don't have that great of a shot come December..

Ruiz did indeed say this, to the best of my knowledge. Honestly, from what my dad has told me, admissions policies have changed a lot in the last 30 years. Basically, there was no thing as deferral back in the day. You were either accepted immediately, put on waitlist, or rejected. Back them, tons of people were rejected. Now adays, I guess medical schools see the benefit of holding on to all of their applicants till the bitter end, as you never know...

Any one gotten an interview invite in a while?? According to the interview invite thread, no one has gotten one since October 1, which I find very hard to believe. I've been complete since mid-August and have heard not one peep. My status is still marked as complete, but I was just wondering at what point I should stop expecting an invite.
