My status as of today is still "under review" and has been since 9/4.

I don't know what to think about that...

same here, dreading the day that 650 turns to 750 ahha

Which airport should we be flying into? Also, if the interview day is theoretically over by 2:30 how early can we make our flight? I just got my interview invite but it's for the day before my Econ final exam...

Your stats are in the autoinvite range, so that is probably what it means. But they take a bajillion years to finish everything...

I heard from another guy that they do UofM does autoinvites? Is that true, and if so, what is the range? Apparently, I was told if you had >37 MCAT, you get an auto invite. However, it seems that Ive been complete for almost 1.5 months now. Does timing factor in against auto invites?

Thx

For OOS, auto-invites are given to people with at least a 3.8/38. For in-staters, it's 3.6/36. And your school has to be considered "top-notch" for the auto-invite.

This business about the OOS auto-invite for 3.8/38+ is not true. I'm a CA resident, and with a 4.0/39, I got a pre-interview hold. I don't know if auto-invites are happening but the numbers at least must be different

It's only for "top schools". Unfortunately for you, UCSB just doesn't count as a top school in UMMS's eyes. Just based on the list of interviewees when I was there, you'd have to be at UC Berkeley, UCLA, UCSD, USC, or Stanford to get that auto-invite from CA.

so caltech students get screwed even though its arguably the best ugrad in the US for biology?

I don't think you're "screwed" if you don't get an auto-invite. I had stats better than the alledged cut-off and didn't get an automatic interview. But I got an interview and an acceptance after they read my file.

Bottom line: If they want you, they will invite you regardless of whether it's automatic or after review.

i wonder what their "top" schools in MI are? b/c i got an auto-invite and i never thought of my school being a top one.

not sure how completely true that is. i'm OOS, "top notch" school, >38, but my GPA is lower, and i got an autoinvite. so the rule must not be hard and fast

Honestly, I feel like Caltech guys get screwed in everything but engineering jobs. I remember when I was involved in the interview process at my company(an investment bank) for new hires, and my managers turned down a Caltech grad that had everything but a slightly lower GPA(3.0) vs another guy from NYU w/a 3.5. Despite my support for the Caltech guy, since I knew that a 3.0 from Caltech was way more impressive than a 3.5 from NYU, he was still unable to get the job because they considered his GPA too low.

USC is considered a top school? I would think that UCSB would be on par with USC.

Caltech/MIT have excellent biology programs, most people just don't realize it because they are "engineering" schools

Same with Michigan Tech up in the UP. People haven't heard of it really, but they are hard core scientists. The few pre-meds that go there tend to rock the MCAT.

Does anyone know of any student who actually got in after receiving the "Highly desirable-deferred"? If so, do you know if they sent any LOI or updates? Thanks!

Does anyone know if LOIs should be emailed to Dr. Ruiz, and if so, what is his email? Or, should they be posted on the status check website? Does anyone ever read these things?

I figure I'm going to do a hail mary and write a comprehensive LOI to Dr. Ruiz. Can't hurt, right?

I think they said that all updates should to sent through the status check site. There's even an option on the "Update My Application" page for "Letter of Intent."

Go for it! And, yeah, use the status page for updates (that's what I used)

Yeah, they do read updates. If you even e-mail the admissions office they put your correspondence in your file and it will be reflected as such on your status page. So go for it, send an LOU via the status page. 🙂

U of M is so tech savy... I hear that everything you post on SDN is automatically submitted to your file 😉.

UMich has a system where your ip on SDN is synchronized with your ip when you login to the status page. They can monitor your social behavior this way, and see if you are truly the person that you were in the primary/secondary application.

according to my sources, the 2008 application year's operating budget for University of Michigan's UoM system (Universal observation Module system) was $2400, this year it is budgeted for $3000 but due to a huge increase in the number of applicants, they are already over-budget by $700 and will likely cost them over $4000 total for this 2009 application year.

Well, I am also "highly desireable" Dec. decision. I called in and asked when the apps will be updated... Dec. 23rd. So until then, just keep waiting I guess.

So that is why they put me oh hold...interesting...

I just got a hold email. With only 100 slots left, I am not optimistic. (extra salt in the wound, I didn't know they sent hold emails, so I thought the status update was an interview invite)

Same here👎

no updates to my file yet, but I was only complete 2 weeks ago

Does Michigan send a "complete" e-mail...I just got confirmation of my secondary and sec. fee....no "you are complete"

Hey guys and gals.

I've been holding the secondary for a while and I'm not sure if I should send it in at this point (due 12/31, correct?) My stats are on my MDapps page. Regarding activities, I suppose I'm the usual pre-med.

It looks like there are 100 interviews to be offered w/ 30% of acceptance offers remaining. I've completed the secondary, just not submitted it.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Good luck everyone :luck:

Have you done research (or at least INTERESTED in it) or are you in state for Michigan. If you answer yes to either, then go for it.

Just a quick question. I'm trying to submit an update to my app. on their website and the dang thing won't load when I press the submit button. Anyone else had this problem?

With your stats, no it's not too late to apply. 😱

I'm not in state for Michigan but I've done 3+ years of research in 4 different labs including 2 summers and I have a 2nd author pub/ several poster presentations. some stuff I did was briefly on National Geographic channel, which was pretty cool. I'm currently working on an independent thesis project. That said, my admissions decisions at other schools have not been good and I don't want to waste my $.

Thanks for your input, I really appreciate it 🙂

No change whatsoever. There's still a little bit of hope left, but can't say it's much. Oh well; my GPA is probably still too low to be considered competitive for Michigan despite being an in-state resident.
