wow they confirmed an interview date really quick.

my interview is set for mid-september, which is pretty soon.

good luck everyone and congrats to those who have received interview invitations.

Interview invite - c on 8/5. sGPA 3.92 cGPA 3.87 35S. goodluck everyone

I have average stats, in fact my stats are slightly below their averages which is why I was shocked when I got an invite today, and apparently an early one from the looks of things too!

Would it make any difference to schedule my interview for late October as opposed to mid September? I've heard that they make their first decisions on January 15th, so it wouldn't matter right?

i was wondering the same thing. end of september/october would be a lot better for me.

I'm having some issues scheduling things in so I would also like to know if it makes any difference. Thanks

I would just do it as soon as possible since med schools are usually rolling admission. But I'm not sure about this Jan. 15 thing.

Is it safe to travel with luggage on the NYC transit system?

anyone going to the optional clincal facilities tour?

anyone going to the optional clincal facilities tour?

I'm pretty sure that I am, although I'm going to wait to get some more specific info about it to decide for sure. It sounds like a good opportunity to learn more about the school so I really hope everything works out with my travel arrangements so that I can go on the tour.

anyone going to the optional clincal facilities tour?

Me! 🙂

Check your flight schedules first. I hear it ends around 5ish, so it kinda messed up my low flight fares around that time, so it's cheaper for me to stay one extra day instead of flying out at night.

How long after submitting secondary were you guys complete? I've submitted mine on 8/10 and still no e-mail. Beginning to feel like something might be screwed up with my file.

LaGuardia looks a lot easier to me... Check another airline maybe?

JFK and LaGuardia are 20 minutes away from each other, it makes no difference. JFK might have more traffic driving out of it, but distance wise its the same thing. LaGuardia looks like its alot closer on the maps but I live in queens and it takes me probably only 15 minutes longer to drive to JFK than it does for me to drive to LaGuardia, and if you want to get some idea of relevance, I live near the 71st Avenue - Continental subway stop in Queens on the F, E, V, G, R subway lines (the green/yellow/orange and blue lines that run along side each other in queens. See subway map below).

now, Newark, on the other hand, is like two hours away, so i'd stay away from Newark. Unless you really like smelly parts of NJ.

Oh, and FYI.....all taxi cabs (yellow cabs only) have a flat rate from airports to Manhattan of, I believe, 40-45 dollars plus tip. Einstein is in the Bronx, so, you can either cab it into manhattan and take the subway up to the bronx, or just suck it up and pay an extra 20-30 bucks and save yourself the stress of dragging all your crap all over the subway and just cab it to the bronx. You're already spending all this money flying in and applying, whats an extra 30 bucks on the cabfare to get a ride to the Bronx? let me tell you now, the subway isnt bad, but coming from the airport there is no direct train. You'll have to transfer several times, and it is a huge pain in the butt.

As a lifelong resident of NYC, who works in manhattan and lives five minutes from both JFK and LaGuardia airports...save yourself the stress and if you can afford a little extra, take a cab on your way to the interview. Then, if you really want, on your way BACK from the interview you can deal with the hassle of the subway to save money going back, but relax on yoru way to the interview. The last thing you want is to show up sweaty and tired, having spent two hours transfering subway and/or bus lines to get from queens alllllll the way up into the Bronx. In case you have no idea how far it is from queens to the bronx by subway, go look at a subway map. http://www.mta.info/nyct/maps/submap.htm

OH YEAH, I ALMOST FORGOT- there is an airport shuttle too. There are several , actually. Any airport to manhattan for as little as 13 dollars. Way better than the subway. Here's one: http://www.goairlinkshuttle.com/page.php?page_code=RIGHT1

There are no direct trains from queens, let alone the airports, into the Bronx. See all the different coloured lines? You have to transfer every time you change "colors", and sometimes they come on time, and sometimes you get to wait on the sweaty, hot, no air conditioning platform. And if you are lucky enough to arrive in rush hour, good luck, yo'll be crammed into the car like a sardine. Which is fine when youre used to the daily commute, but if youre trying to relax before your interview, i wouldnt reccomend it.

cheers

Lol the subway is very safe. When I was 15 years old I routinely took the subway by myself at 3 in the morning wearing mini skirts and knee high boots coming back from clubs and never felt fearful. NYC is generally quite safe, for the most part. I mean, I'd stay away from east new york and parts of harlem and the bronx....but most of it is fine. The subway is def. fine and safe. Just obviously keep an eye on your luggage and keep it with you at all times, pickpockets exist in every city.

PS- depending on the station you will be going up and down LOTS of stairs. If you intend to bring very heavy bags i'd just take a cab. its a flat rate fair from any airport to anywhere in manhattan of, i think, about 45 bucks. Or you can spend 3 dollars for the subway, but probably spend two hours and several transfers between subway lines. Or you can take a shuttle for 13 bucks. Shuttle or cab are both way better than the subway, which does NOT run directly to the airport, might I add. There are connections to the airport, but there is no one train that will take you from the airports to where you have to go. http://www.goairlinkshuttle.com/page.php?page_code=RIGHT1 <-- try that instead

Submitted a couple days after and no complete email for me either. I think they are just slow. oh well.

The taxicab flat rate from JFK to Manhattan is $50 + $5 toll + tip. I'm not sure if there is a convenient public transportation. So, it adds up to +$130 or so if you have to take a cab.

LGA is ~$20 to Manhattan by cab one-way, but it would depend on traffic - this is the tolled, non-flat rate that I paid last time I did this. However, there is a convenient public transportation system to LGA.

For Newark, you would take a 20-30min train ride to Penn Station ($15 on NJ Transit, one-way). The train picks you up right from the terminal. It's convenient, and it's cheaper for planes to land here, I believe.

Yeah, I've been to NY a lot...

Is it safe to travel with luggage on the NYC transit system?

some ppl would just come to you as soon as they recognize u r a stranger and would try to help you to get to the bus station/texi etc and at the end they would ask you for money so beware of that and yea dont carry whole lot of cash. Credit cards are good for that so u can just tell them u dont have cash lol.

I submitted 7/9, got a complete email 8/4. Now they probably have more applications, so who knows when you'll get what.

For those that already interviewed, do you know when the morning and afternoon interviews begin? And did you chose when you wanted the interview or they assigned you one of the two during the day?

lol "stay away from the bronx"

Einstein is IN the bronx

I told them in my e-mail that I would prefer an afternoon interview but that I could take either if they weren't able to give me my preference. And I got an afternoon interview, so maybe it worked? Afternoon interviews are at 2 pm and they ask you to be at the medical school by 11:45 am.

Is it safe to travel with luggage on the NYC transit system?

i've done it, oh... about 300000000 times. it's more than fine.

Just remember to take off your coat. Enjoy the sauna 🙄

only in the stations! the trains themselves are super AC-ed.

oh, and LGA FTW! screw JFK. the M60 bus goes to LGA-- i'd recommend that over a cab any day. i think earlier in this thread i wrote about taking the M60 to 125th and lexington and then getting on the 5 train to go up to einstein. that'll only cost you $2.25!

I'm thinking about driving up...are there places to park? Also...if I'm leaving from Philly and need to be there by 11:45 how early should I leave?

interview invite as of yesterday! complete 8/17. in state

How long did it take you guys to receive your secondary?

I was verified on 8/08, and I still haven't gotten a secondary. Hope it's not lost in spam. After hearing about the staff's unfriendliness, I don't feel like calling.

Any suggestions?

id wait another week or so. i think mine was in the spam folder. they don't screen so i think you should be getting one soon. be patient!

lol "stay away from the bronx"

I said "parts of" the bronx, and if you are from NY, then you should know exactly what i mean. Ive worked in crap neighborhoods there, and i assure you i would have preferred not to wander around there at 1 in the morning if at all possible, whereas i could wander around most of my neighborhood or most of manhattan at any time of night and not be too concerned. So, it really depends. Ive been to every neighborhood in NYC throughout my life/career.....some are preferential to others.

Einstein isnt in a bad area.

Anyway, enough on that.....NY is a great city, people shouldnt be scared of it, just saying to be realistic. Some areas of any big city suck.

their website is down...fail lol. anyways, so you just tell them any date? do they have student hosts?

Yeah you pretty much just give them a bunch of dates and yes, they also have student hosts. The overall interview day seems jam packed with tours of all their facilities and stuff, seems kind of exciting actually. They even let you have a second interview if you had issues with your first interviewee

Thank you very much. I think I will just take the Supershuttle or other share ride van from the airport to the hotel. And then take the cab from the hotel to the interview.

I'll be looking for a hotel near Einstein to stay in the night before my interview and I was just wondering if anyone who's familiar with the neighborhoods there could give me a heads up as far as what part of town I want to avoid. I'll be traveling alone from the airport close to 11pm on a Thursday night trying to get to my hotel so I don't want to put myself in a dumb situation if I can avoid it.

If anyone else is interviewing Sept 18 and wants to try to coordinate any travel from the airport/hotel/travel back to airport from the school plans, PM me!

Thanks guys.

You can always stay in Manhattan, and then take the subway to Einstein....

what are your stats if you dont mind me asking

I wanted to book a cheap room, because I have to stay for two nights (I have an interview 3 days later in Vermont).

But I've been looking at reviews, and Econolodge in Bronx got decent ratings at 89 bucks per night.

It's at 1000 Baychester Ave, Bronx, NY 10475... should I be concerned about the neighborhood? the place is 2 miles away from Albert Einstein it seems.

I'm going to be traveling only during noonish to late afternoonish in public transportation to and from JFK... so any advice on getting here also? I've never been to NY but i'm kinda excited for a little adventure. I hope I just don't get lost or mugged :scared:

I am confused, how do you request student hosting? Where is the link or internet address?

id wait another week or so. i think mine was in the spam folder. they don't screen so i think you should be getting one soon. be patient!

For those who got the answer in their spam inbox, which e-mail client do you use? Anybody use Gmail? Is there a way to check your status online?

I got an interview too (haven't gotten confirmation on a date yet), but was wondering if anyone had any idea what the chances of acceptance are if granted an interview. I'm not sure if this information is even available, but if it is could someone lead me in the right direction? Thanks and good luck to everyone in this very stress-inducing process!

i think it's been asked but i don't think anyone's responded, but:

does anyone know how strict they are with the 5 letter max?

since i'm assuming if they say 5 they mean 5, does anyone have any thoughts on which one to nix:

1) a non-science letter from a phd student, and i got the highest grade in the class, or

2) a letter from an internship at a non-profit with someone who probably knows me a lot better,

given that i have the mandatory 2 science, one research and one from the long-term volunteering gig i did. i think both are strong letters. i just feel like with 4 academic ones, there's less focus on my community work, which was a huge part of my personal statement and why i want to go into medicine, but i also know many schools really like non-science letters. ackkk, all the schools i've done before this that had a max of five, i've taken out one of the science (probably my weakest letters in general) 🙁

also, does anybody know where in the world i can find a list of their pre-reqs?? i'm pretty sure i've done them all but i want to be certain before i click that "no, i don't need to do any more of them" circle and all the googling and site navigating don't seem to be leading me to the right page!

thank you in advance 😍😍😍

I added this school like 2 weeks ago on AMCAS, but still don't have a secondary. Are they just really slow? I'm still waiting on their email reply.

As long as they don't require a non-science nix that one. If it would come from a professor with a phd that's fine, but no courses I know of are taught by phd students. phd students are usually the TAs, and for most med schools they specifically say TAs don't count (has to be from a professor). Just my 2 cents and I'm not an expert, so maybe call the school and ask if you're still wondering? Good luck!
