Man, 'The Boat' is starting to make me think there's a website out there devoted solely to pics of shep - probably www.theincredibleshep.com . . .

That better be a real website by this time tomorrow evening. I'm looking at you, Erik. While I'm not narcissistic enough to post a picture of myself, this is a new thread page. So I'll settle for posting a picture of my new dog. Her name is Muscles.

For a change of pace, here's a baby picture of Shep. This is him 4.5 hours after birth, standing. He was carrying two other babies above his head, but for some reason the pictures got cut off. My guess is he was too buff for optics.

Also, you guys ready for today? I'm predicting we get 2 more people today. And then next week we are going to see 11 more people go from the waitlist. 😍

Come on scrublets, rally 'round the boat and lets make this happen! Wooooo Wooo!

I think it is important to point out how awesome that last statement was. That's something I am thinking I am gonna make one of my new things... telling people to "rally 'round the boat."

Ha!

Ha!

I honestly don't know anyone who wouldn't rally 'round the boat...

In other equally relevant news, I recently started watching the show "Man Vs. Food." I must say given my love for food (and large quantities of it) I can't believe I have never seen this show. In the first episode he eats a 72 ounce steak dinner. Now I have driven by that very same restaurant in Texas numerous times, but never actually stopped. After watching him do it in under 30 minutes, I now know eating that steak is going to be my new life goal. Who is up for organizing a field trip to Amarillo during the summer after MS-I to go eat a 72 ounce steak??? I know the boat can't resist a 72 ounce steak...

I saw that episode! I don't think I can eat that whole steak...wait let me rephrase that, I am POSITIVE I can't eat that whole steak, probably not even a quarter of it, but I am totally down for going on a trip and watching you two attempt to eat them!

Shep must come along on this excursion... it would be so easy for him considering he eats the 72 ouncer for breakfast, lunch, and dinner...maybe even dessert.

Just called Ann - still at #17, arrrrrrgh.

Hopefully we'll see a gradual increase in WLers pulled per week the next two weeks (2 next week, 3 the week after - at least that would keep my prediction accurate, and my hopes up).

Wait, instead of rally around the boat, why don't we ROCK 'The Boat'!?!?!?! :horns::horns::horns::horns: And I mean that in a 'you rock' sort of way, not 'we will rock you' sort of way 😀 I'll cheer you on, boat, for the 72 ouncer.

Maybe after you'd collapse in the parking lot on the way out. Shep and I could give you cpr, while reydn (sorry man) gives you mouth to mouth. We could all write about it in our residency applications. 😎

Good, I need a partner in crime (referring the obvious crime we will be committing against our bodies). The key is to eat it as fast as possible, so your body doesn't have a chance to realize that you are trying to eat a week's worth of food in one sitting. Oh and here's the kicker, I heard if you don't finish the steak that it costs like a dollar an ounce...that's 72 big ones. For me this is not an issue as I know I will CRUSH that steak and probably order a second one to go with it, but I thought you should know...

Shep must come along on this excursion... it would be so easy for him considering he eats the 72 ouncer for breakfast, lunch, and dinner...maybe even dessert.

Shep could handle it. Hell, shep and I could go do a killer workout before hand, so our bodies would shuttle all that protein to the muscles and we could bulk up a little...god knows shep needs all the help he can get in that department.

Even if you don't attempt the challenge, we will absolutely need moral support. Plus, when we get too full to move some one is going to have to load us in a wheelbarrow and carry us out of that steakhouse.

I'm interested in surgery, so if we're all using Erik's steak ravaged body to boost our applications, can I cut him open? I want to do ortho, so hopefully he'll blow out his knee trying to walk with all that extra weight from the steak.

Oh for those interested in taking the challenge I should be clear, the 72 ounce steak challenge also includes a side salad, shrimp cocktail, baked potato, and a dinner roll which all must also be consumed along with the steak...

So sad 🙁...I just got out of work and was really hoping for some movement. Come on next two weeks!

I'm feeling good about tomorrow! Come on waitlist! Give us #18...oh and #19 wouldn't be bad either!

Will any of you be starting your reapplication while still on the wait list? Do you just bite the bullet and pay up even though you could still get in this time around?

Will any of you be starting your reapplication while still on the wait list? Do you just bite the bullet and pay up even though you could still get in this time around?

If you would reapply if you don't get in, then I would suggest doing it as early as possible to maximize your chances. Do you risk spending a few hundred extra dollars that would be wasted if you get in off the WL? Sure, but if you don't get in its better to apply earlier. I know its a tough situation to be, and I feel for you all.

In other news I wanted to let everyone know that over on the accepted thread we received word that an OOS person was accepted to Phoenix off the waitlist on Friday. He/She just made a post about it this morning as a new member.

It has definitely started to cross my mind. I wish Phoenix would accept me soon, but good things come to those who wait. Nevertheless, I have begun to gather my application materials, just in case. Who knows maybe some MCAT studying is in store for me. I figure it'll be good to review the information either way. Let's go waitlist, let's see some movement.

Here is something for all those considering the 72 oz steak challenge. I'm here to help.

And here is something for those considering reapplication for next year. I reapplied twice and it didn't get me anywhere. It's only $75, you can still start this fall, and the match list really isn't too shabby. It's at least an option worth opening.

Adding in new OOS acceptee, and keeping one of these on each new page 🙂 MedHopeful, I share your optimism. My own chances are looking slimmer unless the decline rate in May is higher than both 2008 or 2009 (which it could be), but I'm realizing they may have done admissions very differently this year, beyond the whole OOS thing, and I'm less sure of what to expect - just gonna hope for the best!

It's kind of funny, I was noticing that just as many people from the Phoenix WL have updated our SDN WL-list as Tucson WLers. Does that mean anything? Or is it random? I'll let you guys theorize on that one.

Too bad for the Suns 🙁, if they can beat a team like Portland, they may go far in the playoffs 🙂

Maybe after you'd collapse in the parking lot on the way out. Shep and I could give you cpr, while reydn (sorry man) gives you mouth to mouth. We could all write about it in our residency applications. 😎

. . . I guess I'd have to talk up the fact that I'm not afraid or embarrassed to do anything for the sake of saving a life 😎 I don't want to even think about what that might entail after the boat ate a 72 ouncer . . .

I definitely don't think it is time to lose hope Madein, even for #61. I know our rate of movement has been significantly slower than previous years, but if you look at the number we are at now (#17) and compare it to previous years at this same time we are right on track. In 2008 on 4/22 they were at 18 and in 2009 on 4/15 they were at 17. I have a lot of hope that we are going to pick up our rate of movement here as we get closer and closer to May 15th. If not, then UA is sure missing out on some people that would have made amazing docs for the class of 2014!

Pfft. Don't bother with the mouth-to-mouth. I appreciate the sentiment. You guys are forgetting something though...

I can't die. :horns: :bang: :horns:

I noticed some questions on the acceptance thread about computers. I've got a mac and asked Ann about it - she said it should be fine. Here's a pdf from a document provided on the university's website: http://omc.arizona.edu/students/laptop_guidelines_2013.pdf

On that note, I've read about a few hospitals using the iPhone and in-house apps to allow doctors to check patients' ECG's, etc. from wherever they're at. Do you guys think this will be a widespread thing by the time we're in the work-force? Would it be a good idea to get used to carrying around and using an iTouch or smartphone (I couldn't pay for ANY sort of smartphone's data package, so I'd have to settle for an iPod Touch)?

I appreciate the support, MedHopeful! You have good points. I'm not going to lose hope until it gets really close (like July). So I guess that means I'll be on here a lot! 😀

True that! I guess I'll just supervise or something

Now, 2 spots in the next 5 days is a modest request, in my opinion. I'd also like to see a couple of people from the PHX WL get pulled - that would be AWESOME!

If I recall correctly, I believe that for the entering class of 2008 both campuses released a majority of the spots in March (maybe like 60%), as opposed to the consistent increments both for 2009 and this year. If that is true, it may explain the higher waitlist movement for that year. Disclaimer: This is from memory, you may want to check the old thread.

I tried calling for an update on where we are at and if there was any movement today, but there was no answer, went to voice mail after a few rings.

I'll try again later.

I didn't submit my AMCAS application until July 22nd last year, and I don't think it hurt me at all. If I were in your position, I would have everything filled out and ready to go (including LoR's and transcripts), but I would wait until the first day of classes to hit "submit." And then just make sure you complete your secondary application as soon as you get it.

This may not be bad advice, but if you don't get in this year I would recommend not leaving ANYTHING to chance, including application timing. You may never know what schools you might have gotten into if you had gotten your app in before the mid-late-summer rush. Will it cost you a couple hundred bucks? Sure, but you won't start getting secondaries until mid-late July and that's where the real money gets spent on applications. This way you don't have to wait the 4-8 weeks that processing will take for AMCAS. Mathlink points out another option below, which I think is a far too often overlooked route to achieve the goal of getting an MD degree (which IS our goal, getting into school X or Y is not the goal).

Gastroenterologists? Really ML? I think I will eat that 72 ouncer and order a sirloin to-go!

I respect your promotion of Ross. I think it often gets a bad rap, when it doesn't deserve it. Honestly, for those of you who are serious about becoming a medical doctor, why would you NOT consider this route? Is it worth wasting another year of your life on another god-awful application cycle? I wouldn't want to go through this crap again for almost anything in the world. Plus, when you factor in a year of lost income being spent applying, you're losing a lot of money. Once we're all doctors, no one is going to care where you went to school anyways...

I noticed some questions on the acceptance thread about computers. I've got a mac and asked Ann about it - she said it should be fine. Here's a pdf from a document provided on the university's website: http://omc.arizona.edu/students/laptop_guidelines_2013.pdf

You could always buy an iPhone and just use it as an iPod touch until you can afford the data plan. That's what I am doing with my wife's old iPhone (yes, we pay for her to have to data plan, but not me). This way you can still use Wi-Fi internet access, but when it comes time to upgrade to the data plan you won't have to buy a phone. I don't know the difference in price between the two, so that's something to consider as well I guess.

That makes sense, Legit. It's probably one of the biggest factors affecting movement this first month. 😎

Thanks MedHopeful! Hope you have good news for us 😀 :xf::xf::xf:

I'm feeling pretty ignorant - I didn't even know you could do that! I'll have to look into that.

I just tried calling again and it rang three times and went to voice mail 🙁...They must be gone for the day...Ugg and now we have to wait ANOTHER day ha ha, at least for tonight we can hope that it moved a spot today and we just don't know yet!

I'm feeling pretty ignorant - I didn't even know you could do that! I'll have to look into that.

I'm actually not sure if this would be plausible, because of pricing. I know the iPhone isn't outrageous to buy if you are getting one with a two-year contract, but that might not be the case without it.

Don't worry, I'm not running out to buy one tonight. I'm gonna look into what you've said, and wait to see if the new iPhone is (hopefully) also compatible with Verizon. No matter what happens, I'll wait till I find the best combination of price, compatibility, and functionality.

With just the thought of eating 4 1/2 pounds of meat in one sitting, I don't think I'm gonna be able to take a dump for a month. I figured it might be helpful to have the contact info of a GI doc in case you need to go get your stomach pumped or something.

I wish I would have applied to Ross a lot sooner. The entire ages of 23 & 24 have been a giant vaccuum, and the only good thing I have experienced during that time was the birth of my daughter and the occasional pictures of Shep that ehandber has been posting. To all of those considering reapplication, I definitely would recommend at least applying to Ross. Remember that you can go this fall or in January.

:hijacked:

But what would you expect from someone who plans to attend medical school on the same island where Pirates of the Caribbean 2 and 3 were primarily filmed?

Thanks for posting this! Does the Tucson campus release data like this as well?

I wasn't able to find any information that was specific for Tucson, but I would guess that their numbers are roughly similar. I feel fortunate to have gotten a waitlist spot and I'm just an email away from bliss. Hopefully, someone will get great news this week.

I didn't change the trendline because the new plot is pretty close to it. We're still just barely ahead of past years. It's interesting to note that there was a big jump in 2008 right before May, while 2009 didn't have one. 2009 was also slow even in the beginning of May, then it got wild right around May 15th. Still trying to figure out why my zipped jpegs are so big. I'll get you a nice looking compressed jpeg soon.

I am starting to think that the 2008 application cycle may not be as reliable as the data from 2009. All things considered though, with the inclusion of OOS applicants it'll be nearly impossible to predict the final number. My guess is somewhere between 19 and 123. Hopefully, it will be closer towards the upper limit.

Agreed.

I hope that we will see a little bit more waitlist movement due to financial reasons than in the past. The state of the local economy is just disastrous and the recent increases in tuition as well as the relatively paltry aid estimates I've been hearing may cause students, especially OOS, to head off for greener pastures once aid from schools starts to roll in. It's kind of sad when the relative economics between U of A and a school like Wash U are going to be pretty darn close.
