Another question.
Do a lot of UCI med students move after their first two years so that they can be close to the med center for rotations, and is the area around the hospital somewhat affordable? I for one hate the idea of commuting, especially when I'm already working very long days

yes, most students move. I think a lot of people move to long beach because we do rotations at long beach memorial and long beach VA (as well as UCIMC). Also, the 22 free way gives you a straight shot from LB to the med center. I think i heard that there is also a apartmetn complex or something like that is right next to the med center and is pretty much just used by UCI students. I dunno the details tho.
i know theres some newer looking apartments right next to the med center but idk if thats where it is. As far as i saw thats the only place right across the street. Though there are several complexes near the med cente.r
i got mine only a few days before the actual interview.

Exactly the same here! Only Cali school for me so far. Finally, an interview that doesn't involve expensive plane tickets. Only good thing to come out of interviews so far is my Elite frequent flyer status.

lol, well, at this stage, I can't really use my elite status too much since interview season is wrapping up. I could consider using it for a pre-med school vacation or travel to accepted med schools to make a more informed decision but I can't do that either.
Yea, I try to book the same airline even if it means red-eye flight (which it usually is). I can say I'd be happy not having to adjust to lack of sleep and time zone differences for my interviews. Can't say the same about the credit card bills... 🙁

Honestly, I cannot recommend doing interviews that way. That was a one and done trial for me. I'm pretty much stuck flying in the late night before, trying to catch a few zzz's in a hotel, wake up early, interview, and fly out really late that day.

I was marked complete on 2/4 and got an invite yesterday
with uci theres alwasy a chance. Its like one of the only schools who will accept people they reject lol. I wouldnt worry about it you are fine. Considering most people come off the WL here and that a lot of people turn them down for the other UCs/other schools. Theres plenty of chances to get in

New Years. The admissions officer I called pretty much said it takes about a month or two to review it and they wouldn't consider reading appeals until then. So the timing I guess was perfect.
Watch, their director of admissions is going to be swarmed with letters of appeal now.
Now I know why other schools don't have this process.

lol dont worry mini. The UCs are def not all about the stats (except UCSD). They have so many high stat applicants they could make their averages like harvard or washu if they felt like it. No idea what they look for but in some ways its good for those of us who dont have insane mcats like naj 😛

If you are really interested in coming to UCI, show them that! Send them a LOI, update them with any new stuff you have done or grades you might have, send another LOI. Make sure they know you wanna attend their school and why. I promise you it will absolutely make a difference, and it very well could push you over the edge (these are summarized words from the dean of admisisons herself). Someone just posted earlier they appealed a pre interview rejection and it worked - it happens every year. If it works with pre interview rejections, it will definitely have an impact from the waitlist.
I hope my LOI wasnt too over the top lol. I really want to come to UCI🙁. I had no idea really how to write one. Does it matter when i send my 2nd loi ryserr? I have 2 new jobs to update them about but i wasnt sure if i should do it now or just later...I guess as long as its before may who cares?

Eh i'd say it doesnt really matter, I would just spread them out maybe. But event hat probably won't make much of a difference. If you've got important stuff to update them with, definitely do it sometime and thats all that matters.
In other news, there will be no honors in the first OR second year. We already have P/F for the first year, but it has been changed for the 2nd year now too. This hasnt been officially announced yet, but the word is that with the student feedback and initiative we took to get it changed, it went through. Speak in large number here and the faculty listen.
oh man thats so great!! Thanks. Just curious whats pass considered? Some schools ive been to have had pass as low as 65% to as high as 80%. Any idea? Thanks again ryserr for all the help you give here!🙂

A passing grade varies between classes. Most of the time it is 65% but for some classes it is 70% and never any higher. Actually the only class I can think of that weve had so far that was 70% was epidemiology, but that class was a joke anyways. For anatomy, the syllabus is says that passing will be 70% if the average is 85% or higher and if its lower it will be lowered accordingly. Definitely going to be lowered accordingly, hahaha.
thats sweet they brought it back! They didnt have it last year and they made it sound like they weren't going to have it anymore. I bet its so they can give you all a chance to see the new med ed building if you interviewed before it was open. Its pretty legit and could definitely persuade you if you were on the fence.

no there are no blocks. multiple classes at the same time. but sometimes we are only taking one class at a time. thats actually how it is for the first month school they kind of ease you in to it. So youll be taking only biochemistry for the first month. Then when biochem ends you start immunology, and you add in histo, physio a little later, etc.
but classes will go on and off, so you wont be takign them the entire time. LIke anatomy started after thanksgiving and it technically goes until June, but we dont have any anatomy classes right now and we wont for a few more weeks. Histo kinda does that too. Youll have a histo test and then you might go 3 weeks w/o a histo class.
Right now we are taking physio, histo, and genetics.

I like it. I mean we aren't in "blocks" in that you take every course related to Renal, but they do a good job of making the courses parallel each other. So as we were learning about GI in physio, we were also learning about GI in histo, we were learning about the abdomen in anatomy, and in our doctoring course we were learning how to do the physical exam for the GI system. This isn't always like that, but they do a decent job of making the courses pretty similar.
I like the way the classes are set up tho b/c there is a lot of overlap and you reinforce you learned previously. So weve been long done with biochem, but when you read your physio book there might be some biochem concept that comes up and you are like "oh yea i know this already." So its kinda cool. Itll be that way 2nd year too when we start doing pathophysiology and stuff like that. We'll be learning all the path but at the same time reviewing all the physio from the previous year. As oppsoed to just having a "block" where you do everything and then move on.

Finished my interview today. 🙂 The next 5 weeks of waiting is going to be torture!!
