For current UCSD students or also those who just simply know the answer to this question, what do they do during revisit weekend? Like what do they show you and also do you get to meet a lot of your potential future classmates? Who do you live with? I've been accepted here and at LA and really loved it here during my interview. I'm having trouble deciding and keeping bouncing back and forth between the two.

Its primarily social events/Q&A/free food with other prospective students (some arent 100% decided, like you) and MS1/2s. They circulated host signups so youll be able to stay with them.

We are still working out what we are planning to do this second look weekend. However, for sure, you will get some more updated information on the new curriculum and what to expect. In addition, there will be a talent show that the first and second years hold, which you all are invited to come to. The talent show is meant for the students, but we hold it during second look weekend, so that you all can see what a diverse class we have. After the talent show, there is an after party. In addition, we plan to have break-out sessions for Q/A and other more interactive activities.

Waitlisted!

I'm gonna resubmit in June and take a Grenada vacation in August.

for those still waiting, i just got off the phone with Brian and he said there are 30 interview spots left and about 100 applicants for those spots.

that's not too bad of odds.

better yet, forget those apps and just take 30 ppl off the waitlist :meanie:. okay, just kidding, but seriously, ucsd is awesome. good luck to those still waiting to hear!

I like them there odds

I guess 3:1 isn't as bad as it could be. I wish I'd know one way or the other soon. I'd really like to interview here.

Does anyone know how late UCSD interviews? Loyola has told me they go into April.

:xf:

Any idea when those will go out?

no idea. soon hopefully 🙂

they arent too bad at all.

UCLA interviews through at least march...so its possible through march if not beginning of april.

and i hate to be THAT guy, but 3:1 would be the odds for 30 interviews with 90 applicants....the odds of getting an interview based on those number is 3.33:1

and I hate to be THAT OTHER guy, but you are also incorrect as you are simplifying to the second decimal place instead of the 1's decimal place as I had done. If you want to be technical you'd be here in front of the computer for the rest of your life (or you could figure out how to put a dash above a number... which I haven't figured out).

he he he

dude.

haha i knew i would get that.....yah didnt mean to do it.....sorry....bad habit.

either way....an odds of 3.33 to 1 or 3 to 1, pretty close....i'll take either haha.....

no offense meant to anyone, btw. GL to everyone! haha

What does he mean 100 applicants left? My status page hasn't changed since 9/10/2009. I don't even have "Hold for Interview" checked : \

I feel like they forgot about me.

per my conversation, and almost directly quoted (as best my memory can)..

...."at this point we are whittling down our applicants who have submitted their secondary applications. we have whittled down the pre-interview pool to about 100 applicants for the remaining 30 interview slots available...."

basically, 100 applicants are competing for those 30 slots. and the committee will continue to whittle away until they choose the best 30 for those spots. not be on hold is good. there have already been rejections from this pool already (that is the "whittling away.")

good luck!

this is kind of what my conversation with brian developed into...what they look for. he said they have a very complex calculating system to determine who gets secondaries, interviews...etc.

for the initial screen to get the secondary, they look mostly at your statistics (mcat, gpa). then after you submit your secondary, they look at your other things, particularly what he deemed to be "career hours"...hours spent in the medical field or interacting with patients, such as shadowing, volunteering in a hospital, etc. they also take into consideration your state residence.

i can tell you from my conversation that he said my stats were great (so i'm sure yours are obviously great as well) but my state residence is kind of hurting me as is the quality of my medical ECs apparently (these career hours). additionally, they also look to see what kind of relationship you have with California, particularly with San Diego......but obviously, its the whole picture. i dont work on an adcom obviously, so i'm just giving you the feedback that i personally received that i dont mind sharing. and no, i dont think they are a major stats school......that would be a school like wustl or something

sorry to hear about your rejection and good luck with the rest of the cycle.

ppl had just said it was a stats school. no idea whether that was true or not just what i heard.

i did have a pretty complete app and thought i had a chance. but being OOS really hurts here!

It's not a stats school, but the stats are naturally high due to being affiliated with the UC's. Everything that can possibly be measured IS measured, though. I guess I didn't realize it, but actual clinical experience hours is important.

UCSD isn't a stats school???? What exactly is the definition of a stats school? I was under the impression that schools like UCSD had a certain threshold (i.e 3.5+ Gpa and low-mid 30's MCAT) then after that it's all the other stuff like EC's, research etc that start separating candidates.

Lol, well, UCSD is 3.75 and 33. WashU in St. Louis is 3.9 and 37. THAT'S a stats school.

thats what most schools do. but some schools place a greater emphasis...again....see wash u in stl

Just to let you guys know... I just called the office and they said the last interview spots have not been given out yet. The lady said it would take a couple of weeks until we get notices... so good luck to us!!!! I have been on the hold for interview since 01/20!🙂

sweet, day by day update on those mythical last interview spots.

come on hometown school, show me loooveeee. I deserve surf sushi and in-n-out after 4 years on the east coast.

This is the real truth. With stats like yours, and assuming you do have a complete app, your chances were pretty low to begin with at UCSD. Your state residency can hold you back way more than it should. I was accepted with a 33/3.6, but my OOS friend (from Texas) who actually graduated from ucsd undergrad 2 years ago and has stats and an app that far exceed the norm for ucsd was waitlisted post-interview. he's been accepted at a number of top schools, including LA (wtf? he doesn't even speak espanol lol), so he's not too phased about it or anything. it's just too bad that ucsd was his top choice and we were all expecting him to be a shoo-in 🙁

yea you gotta expect it OOS. congrats tho!

Thanks for the info! If I don't hear within the next couple of weeks I'm going to chalk it up to "silent rejection". I've been on hold since late september! I'm just ready to move on with my life haha.

keep us updated if you get an interview! 🙂

So has anyone here received yet one of these fabled interview invitations?

not me! I'm sure we'll hear soon enough though. although i'm guessing we're pretty lucky we haven't gotten the axe yet, at this point. they like us, kinda 🙄

finally got a rejection off of the "hold for interview" list. Sounds like they just made the final committee review of everyone on the hold list last week, or earlier this week.

Rejected as well : (

I really don't understand this process at all. My personal statement started with a whole thing about San Diego and Mexico in it. I got great interviews, but I guess I won't be receiving any UC interviews this cycle.

Sorry about the rejections guys. I wonder if they're sending them out manually. I haven't received one...yet :scared:

sorry guys and gals about the rejections 🙁

for the acceptance pool peeps - when can we maybe expect some movement? i'm vaguely recalling end of may, which is entirely depressing.

on pre-interview hold since 10/22. finally got the rejection today.

Not here... 🙁 I was put on hold for interview in January and I received a rejection e-mail today. Oh well...

Good luck to all of those that survived!

Did anyone else survive the onslaught of UCSD admissions?

Yep! Interview invite this afternoon after being on hold since October. Woot hometown school.

Hmm that makes me nervous now. I didn't hear anything. No update online either... 😕😕😕

Rejected yesterday as well. Oddly relieved though that all the waiting is over and I can be excited about my other options 🙂 Good luck to all those waiting for pre-interview and post interview decisions! :luck:

I wouldnt worry - you made this cut, I'm sure there are still a few invites left. and at this point if they didnt like you, you would be gone already.

received an interview invite on 3/5. there is still hope.

You can't be rejected if you're interviewed... everybody interviewed either gets accepted or placed into an "acceptable pool"...

For lack of anything better to do I called Brian just to see if I was on today's agenda (affirmative). He said waitlists will be going out tonight, possibly late, and that good news will only go out tomorrow. So here's hoping our inboxes stay empty!

Man. I was wait-listed here. 🙁🙁🙁 It's so unfair. 🙁🙁
I heard that being on a UCSD waitlist is like being on the waitlist of doom and that almost nobody gets off. It's almost like being rejected. 😱

Does anybody know if a LOI will help??

Wait, did you get waitlisted today? I'm sorry to hear that 🙁 But there's still hope! Although their waitlist is huge, I remember being told that a pretty large chunk of their class comes from the acceptable pool.
