hey all, I got an interview at ucsd. I'm also an undergrad here and live in the area. is it still a good idea to stay with a student host? or are they better reserved for OOS students?

There's nothing wrong with staying with a host even if you are from SD. It's just another chance to get an extra perspective. If someone has signed up to host you, they want to host you, regardless of where you are from.

How's everything going? I decided it's about time to check in on this thread 😛

If anyone has any question, shoot them at me. I've only had 2 weeks at the school...but I'll be glad to answer anything I can 🙂

Good luck!

jgberken, tell them to give me an interview stat!

I disagree - hosting does offer the opportunity to get a med student's perspective, but the primary purpose is to offer a free place to stay for someone from out of town and I think many med students will find it odd if not annoying that someone from down the street is sleeping in their house and using their bathroom just to get a chance to talk to them about their school. The hosts aren't signing up for particular people, it's not like someone is looking at a list and requesting to host the guy from in-town.

Well, perhaps it isn't the most efficient use of a host's time to host someone from town. Maybe, it's just from my own perspective then that I wouldn't be annoyed if I had to host someone from SD. I just don't think there's that much time to truly get to ask any students (one on one) about the school. I mean, if they'd rather sleep on a couch than their own bed, right before their interview, I'd say let them do it.

Why not just ask a student host to meet up for coffee or lunch? Then you can ask about the school without the unnecessary imposition. If you're interested in seeing student housing, you can ask for them to show you student housing when you meet up.

To me, this would be much more reasonable, whereas asking to sleep over, quite frankly, would seem like a weird and creepy request coming from a local applicant.

Anyone else get this lightly disheartening but not completely horrible email last week:

.Hello,

Your application has been put on hold for possible interview. This means we will not be interviewing you at this time, however, you may be interviewed at a later date. Please be advised that we only interview 25% of those receiving secondary's..

I was complete at the beginning of August, btw.

haha, I see you are hard at work just like me.

Good Luck on your exam tomorrow!

Ah, lots of people not studying when they should be. Me included.

So I just got complete today (9/23) - on the status page it looks like the two options are either you're invited for an interview or you're put on hold...do we just not get outright rejected at this stage?

That statement of legal residence is killing me. Do I really have to fill out when my parents each got their licenses, got them renewed, when their first checking AND savings accounts were established and where? And how long they've been in the U.S.?

What if they don't know? (Or I don't want to ask, kind of on bad terms with the parents right now 😛) Isn't it enough that my parents have lived here for over 30 years and have never moved out of CA?

If you submitted your primary in June, but haven't heard back for secondary , does this mean a rejection???

I have friends who have interviews right now at UCSD and soem other UC's.

What's the latest UCSD sends out secondaries and interview invites?

And are waitlists only for after secondaries are submitted?

Thanks a lot!

Complete 9/15-ish and just got my invite 9/28. Awesome and its the day after finals. Now I just need to make sure I don't have my jury duty on that day. I go to UCSD so at least its not a lot of travel.

I've been complete since 8/27 and still no word 🙁. I'm starting to get worried.......

The season is pretty long out here...at least until March...maybe April

best of luck guys

Just had my interview the other day. The interviewers were very nice. I had two faculty interviewers, a MD in surgery and a PhD in genomics. For the PhD it was his first time interviewing and we spent a lot of time talking about research before we went into the questions. He had a list of questions that were very standard such as "Why UCSD?" or "where will medicine be in 10 years." We spent a lot of time talking about ethics and health insurance, which was really cool. The first interviewer didn't seem to have gone over my file, but the second interviewer definitely did. He had a list of things that he wanted to talk about from my AMCAS, but it all went really smoothly. He wanted to talk about research a lot. Overall, the interviews were like conversations and weren't nerve-wracking at all.

The admissions office told us that 43% of those that interview will get in eventually, and that most people find out two weeks after their interview date. For those of us interviewing now though, we won't hear back until the middle of November because they want a bigger pool to look at before starting acceptances.

All of the students here absolutely love the campus. They love their classmates, the teachers, and the curriculum, but most of all, they love San Diego. When I first arrived my host walked into the apartment with a surfboard under his arm. How awesome is that? The students were super friendly and they took us on a tour and let us come over to party at one of their houses that night. The weather over here is unmatched and there's a lot of fun stuff to do. The students work hard but when they're off they have a lot of fun.

My understanding is that only 200 applicants have received secondaries, the rest have been put on hold and will receive their secondaries in November. So, if those are high-priority applicants, are those who already submitted their secondaries all getting interview invites?

Put it another way, has anyone who has submitted their secondary gotten rejected (it's ok, we won't judge you 😉).

I got a secondary and no invite, just hold. Go figure.

I think the 200 refers to the applicants that receive an auto-secondary without actual review of their file. These are the high stat people. I highly doubt they have only given out 200 secondarys. It took them a week to get me my secondary from when they received my data.

In other news, is anyone gonna be at the free clinic tour tonight? Maybe I'll see some of you there!

Hmm, I wonder if that's the baseline at this point. Interview vs. hold rather than interview vs. reject.

Yes, apparently no one gets rejects at this point. I think someone said that earlier in this thread.

I saw a tour group going through the Biomed Library today, anyone here in it? Did they complain about the school closing the cafeteria in the med school?

I'm not going to. I'm technically not an "unmarried student under the age of 24", since I graduated already. Heck, I don't even know where my dad lives right now.

If you are still waiting and are stressed, don't be. My file has been complete for months and I hadn't heard a peep.

If it helps calm your nerves, I'm not a genius-kid and I'm OOS. 3.98, 32T, lots of service/international aid, some research (but no publications...yet), some leadership. I have no idea what they look for, but they gave me an interview and I obviously do not walk on water, so maybe they do accept some humans into medical school, just to entertain the research robots and the 40+ MCAT gods-in-embryo.

Best of luck to everyone who is trying to ride the wave into med school this year.

Yay! Invite. Complete 8/19, Invite 10/8. Does anyone know what month UCSD interviews until? My date isn't until January.

I got an invite today!

Complete: 7/10
On Hold: 7/15
Letter of Interest/Update: 8/9
Interview Invite: 10/8

Funny thing was I was giving a seminar about applying to medical school to a group of premed students, and I wanted to show them how to organize a gmail act when applying. When I logged in, first thing popped up was the invite! Everybody started clapping, and I was like :scared:.

Good luck to those who are still waiting for secondary/interview invite.

Congrats! They must be going through the hold pile. I was on hold too and had sent a letter of interest/update.

Just got an interview invite today after being put on hold!

For people who are still on hold at UCSD, I think that writing a letter of interest/update definitely helps. I was put on hold on August 12 and sent a letter of intent via e-mail a few days later. I received a very nice response shortly afterwards and was told that my letter would be added to my file and that the admission committee would reconsider applicants on hold in early October.

True to their word, here we are in early October, and they're handing out invites to applicants on hold.

I haven't heard anything at all. Would you suggest that for those in my position or just wait it out?

Does anyone know why they schedule them so far out? Three months away sounds a bit ridiculous, I was thinking more along the lines of three weeks.

Mine only shows Dates up to December.. Perhaps we may have to wait.

Interview invite today, scheduled for Jan 26.

Me too!!!! January does seem really far away. Maybe they are full until then. Regardless, I am sooooo excited!!!! I couldn't believe it, I thought it might be a mistake because my stats are less than average but I guess miracles happen!!!!!

It seems odd that the clinic tours are on the day before my interview; I would imagine there was enough time in the afternoon after the interview for tours and dinner.

I think (could be wrong though) that our clinics are only open on certain days since they have to be overseen by volunteer physicians/4th years, which are in limited supply. Thus if you want to see it, you gotta go on the day its open.

Yeah they have a handful of clinics, and I think they were told us each was only open 1 night a week. To my knowledge, none of these clinics were permanent so unless you wanna see a church or an elementary school, I would go the night it is open.

Do you know which clinic is open on Wednesday nights? I'm the wost UCSD pre-med ever.

I toured on a wednesday. The Pacific Beach clinic is the one that is open that night. Its held in a church. The amazing thing is that the only permanent clinic room in that church is the dental room, everything else is put away every week! Have a good tour!
