whens the next ucsd interview?

Interviews are held every Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday.

There will be no Monday interview this week b/c of Columbus Day (lol...I have not been at a school that has Columbus day as a holiday since high school...hmmm did not realize I have been away from Cali that long)

anyways.

Best of luck guys...if you have any questions do not hesitate to PM me...or give Brian a call. He is extremely helpful

Yeah Columbus day is still an instruction day in Undergrad; VA employees are off though.

Normally we get Cesar Chavez day in the spring instead of Columbus Day.

We still had interviews today, Columbus day, actually. Luckily for MS1's, we just didn't have class.

How are you guys getting from the airport to La Jolla?

It looks like the options are to take a Super Shuttle, which'll be like $35, or to take the 992 bus to the 30 bus, which is a total of $5 but apparently takes like two hours. Ick.

If you're arriving during the day, take a cab to UCSD's hospital in Hillcrest (about $15), then the free shuttle to the La Jolla campus.

Im pretty sure Columbus day=furlough in disguise.

ha...it turns out only the med school and pharm school was not in session. Probably b/c the undergrads and other grad students just started hace dos semanas

Ah, that sounds crazy smart, but unfortunately, it doesn't run on Sundays. My interview is Monday morning. Thanks for the advice though.

Do we need to bring anything to the interview besides the residency form? Like a 2x2 photo, transcript, etc?

I don't think so. You just need a list of the courses you took since you applied (unofficial transcript or grade print out I think) and the completed residency form (pain in the (_|_) to fill out).

Word. The residency form said something about attaching a page that explained why I was out of the state for more than four months while still being a California resident. I asked about it and they said not to bother since "ATTENDS SCHOOL IN BOSTON" was sufficient.

My first interview was canceled because my interviewer had to perform emergency surgery on a patient. Whoops. The office scheduled me with a different physician after the campus tour though, so I guess everything worked out. Hopefully I'll hear some good news from UCSD in the next 4-6 weeks. The school was damn impressive and La Jolla is an amazing city.

Aggro, I am super excited by the fact that you have a Venture Bros avatar.

If anyone's interested they're starting construction on a new med school building this month where the Club Med restaurant is/used to be. Supposedly there's going to be a cafe and some tele-medicine/virtual stuff there. Opens 2011. Also new housing in the area for grads/professional students is being built right behind the SOM next to the pharmacy school.

I have no idea if they mentioned this on the tour. Rent in LJ is way too expensive so its nice to have some housing options.

Rent isnt that bad if you shoot for on campus. Youll be hard pressed to find a single room within walking distance for less than $640/month (or 400ish if you dont mind living 4 to an apt). Plus its all relative, so for someone coming from Boston housing is insanely cheap here.

Yea, I spoke with my student host who lives in the Regents Apartments that are right on the 201/202 route. They're set up almost like a motel, and they have a two bedroom/two bathroom apartment with full amenities for like $800/mo. That's less than what I'm paying now in Boston, so housing costs really wouldn't be that bad in La Jolla.

Oh, and the Venture Bros. premiere on Sunday was AWESOME.

Yeah the campus owned housing is super-subsidized. They have studios in the Coast apartments (which have ocean views and are right off campus and the 30 bus) for like 6-700 which is very cheap for this area. My housemate and I paying 1450 for a 2 bedroom 1 bath in Downtown la Jolla.

Supposedly there was some big controversy about the changes to the housing guarantees for grad/professional students last year. something about people getting kicked out of campus-owned housing because they only wanted to offer 2 years rather than 4? I may be wrong about this, but I guess it doesn't matter since Hillcrest isn't near campus anyway. Rent down there is pretty cheap.

You're right, reggieray. You get kicked out of off-campus housing after 2 years. But, like you said, it doesn't matter since none of us want to live in la jolla during our third and fourth years.

UCSD hasn't sent out the first acceptances yet?

I interviewed 10/1 and they told us they wanted a larger applicant pool before they make decisions. First admissions meeting is 11/14 and first acceptances go out 11/16 I believe.

so does that mean they're considering EVERYONE before 11/14? or just the really early dates (sept/oct)?

I just know that is the first time they will meet about any interterviewed applicants. I would assume they would start with the early dates. I doubt they would get to everyone but who knows.

bah. i thought my luck was turning around. anyone know how many people get interviewed off the hold list?

ideally i'm going to have a great update letter cause i'm doing some cutting edge research and should be submitting for publications soon, that and a grade from a biochem course. oh well hopefully i get an interview... dream school.

Daggonit. Just got the "on hold for possible interview" email. I guess my 100,000,000 character bio was not enough.
:boom:

me too. sometime around then. ah oh well... time to start writing up an update letter.

hopefully while we received this news, others got invites. and on the plus side, we weren't rejected.

if you are put on hold... is there a good chance you could get an interview or is it very unlikely?? are a lot of people put on hold?

Thanks in advance.

just got put on hold too. at least I didn't get rejected!

I called today and they said that they are actually holding thier first decision meeting on Nov. 2nd. If Dr. Kelly feels like there are enough solid applicants, some of us could know by Nov. 3 by calling the office on that day.

Do you know which interview date this includes up to?

Dr. Kelly is awesome...so are the other deans here at school

extremely supportive and quite approachable.

best of luck to everyone!

I wonder if hold for interview is better or worse than no status at all.

Yes, finally an interview invite here! Was complete 9/10, and on the interview email they said that the first available slot was Feb 16. wow.

Wow indeed. Considering that they've apparently only given out 200 secondaries, and only a fraction of those have been granted interviews, what are they going to do with the 1500+ people that are going to receive secondaries in november? I was complete only a couple weeks ago and if I get an interview I would imagine it might be as late as March or even April. Other schools granting interviews now are offering them in November. Anybody know why UCSD is so booked up already?

Interview invite yesterday for 2/2 (AMCAS 7/12, SR 8/10, Complete 8/21, No hold). I cannot believe that they are scheduling this far out.

Marked as complete 9/18, haven't heard a word since. Is this normal?

me too. here's to hoping for the best.

So does anyone know when the decisions are going to come out for the first batch of interviews?

The first decision meeting is on Nov. 2nd. Brian told me on the phone that if they feel that there are solid applicants, some acceptances could be given out on Nov. 3rd (He told me to call). He also said that if they wanted to wait for a larger applicant pool, we would know by Nov. 16th.

I just got an email from Brian this morning telling me that I am being invited for an interview! I was complete on 8/28, and put on hold on 9/29. I sent an update letter on 10/19 and just heard back this morning.

so, i was a little late on the bandwagon because i took my mcats in august.

i submitted my AMCAS 9/20, but still haven't received a secondary. am i dead in the water?

i got one from UCLA a week later. very odd indeed. as a CA resident, i didn't think i'd get shut out before the secondary.

(PS. i know they say it takes 6-8 weeks, but does it really? that seems SO long)

I know SD is in the process of redoing its curriculum. Does anyone know what year they are planning to implement the changes?

New curriculum starts next year. Systems based, half the class time. It's awesome.

The new curriculum is the same curriculum that like 80% of medical schools use now. I was kind of surprised when they told me that they were excited about introducing an innovative and unique curriculum, because it's really not. Regardless, it's still a positive change, as I think that the systems-based way of learning is vastly superior to the physiology-then-pathology method.
